r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Aug 27, 2019 Posted: 27 Aug 2019 01:08 AM PDT This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post. Some helpful day to day links, including news:
Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions. The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price. TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term. Roku is growing even faster than Netflix did at the same point, analyst says Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:36 AM PDT Streaming business Roku will reach 80 million active accounts by 2025, a William Blair analyst says. "Roku will experience similar phased stages of international growth as Netflix did during its international expansion," says William Blair's Ralph Schackart. Shares of Roku, which sells its own streaming devices with thousands of channels and provides an operating system for smart TVs, have been on a tear this year, climbing nearly 370%. Opinion: Best ETFs to look into during this current time? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 06:58 AM PDT Amid current trade war between China and US, Japan, Trump tweets. What are some of the ETFs that are personal favorites of yours? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:56 AM PDT Disney+ is coming out this November and will pull its content from Netflix. Disney+ will also undercut the price of Netflix and will get the option to bundle its package with ESPN+ and hulu. Netflix has pulled back from its 52 wk high of $386 to $296 while Disney has pulled back from $147 to $134. I believe that Netflix has all the risk but has pulled back enough where the stock looks appealing. However, with all of Disney's content, it seems likely that people will switch over from Netflix. Which one of these company do you think is a better buy? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Aug 2019 01:54 PM PDT I wanna cop some shares of one of them (or a combination of 2/3, but then I'll be paying the fee 3 times). Convince me with which you'd go for, assuming you got about 1-1.5k to spend. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:06 AM PDT So everyone was screaming sell PG when it's PE broke 30. Now we are at 80 and it's hanging around 120 a share. Historically this is where PG splits but I've been thinking of selling half my PG and getting into Disney. I think Disney's PE is around 17. I'm looking around but I'd like to stay in something relatively safe but I could throw a few K at an autistic stock [link] [comments] |
Is there any reason to believe in AAOI? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 10:56 AM PDT This company has taken a massive hit in the last year. I'm wondering if there is any argument for it being a buy at these levels or if this one is going to 0 [link] [comments] |
Are tariffs a good tool in trade negotiations? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 07:04 AM PDT Tariffs affects people who are completely innocent. For example, if you hold large positions in S&P500 ETFs then you'll see large wealth declines if tariffs are slapped on. It looks like Trump wants to hurt Chinese companies but it hurts US companies and their stock price as well. Some argue that this will help US equities in the long run, but many Chinese people own US equities and many American people own Chinese equities, so targeting company profitability hurts everyone since everyone is globally diversified. How do I Learn to invest with $3000? Posted: 27 Aug 2019 09:21 AM PDT Hey Guys! So I'm looking for some advice here. I have decided to set aside $3000 to invest in the Australian stock market. The goal of doing so is to learn how to develop my own investment strategies and identify investment opportunities. Ultimately I would like to learn to think like a trader because I aspire to be one. Now I understand that trading and investing are different, but with only $3k I can only make a very few number of trades due to transaction costs. So my question is, can I learn to trade by learning to invest? or do trading and investing require fundamentally different skillsets? Also, I would like to know what investment horizon would be best for my situation and what investment strategies should I then consider? Thank you guys! [link] [comments] |

Anybody looking into VDE? (Energy ETF) Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:43 AM PDT It's been beaten down the past few years and has 3.6% dividend. I've been watching it (as well as XOM and BP) for a few months now. Anyone have any input? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Aug 2019 07:54 AM PDT Can anyone explain why the announcement sent Phillip Morris plummeting? I don't really understand what's up with the situation. Why would announcing a merger cause the price to change so drastically? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2019 12:04 AM PDT Is there a good alternative for the stockhacker of thinkorswim. Since they do not accept Dutch residents I cant create an account there. Im looking for a (free) screener for technical information (macd, ma, ema etc.). The screener of tradingview is coming close but the EMAs and MAs given there are not the ones I want to use and you cant modify them. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Don’t panic. The media is lying to you about Trump’s China tariffs Posted: 27 Aug 2019 11:19 AM PDT "It wasn't long ago the media was complaining because Trump was cutting taxes. Now it's complaining he's raising them. Confused? Me too. And the amounts involved are trivial. Chicken feed. President Trump just hiked tariffs from 10% to 25% on about $200 billion in Chinese imports. In other words, he just raised taxes by … $30 billion a year. Oh, no! The total amount we all paid in taxes last year — federal, state and local — was $5.51 trillion. This tax increase that has everyone's panties in a twist is a rounding error. Meanwhile, the total value wiped off U.S. stocks during Monday's panic was about $700 billion. More than 20 years' worth of the new tariffs."
