| Question Regarding Taxes on Stocks Posted: 29 Aug 2019 08:25 AM PDT I want to know if I'm thinking about capitol gain tax correctly. Tell me if I am right or wrong please. Let's say you have $10,000 you invest. You invest $6000 in stock A and $4000 in stock B. Throughout the year: Stock A rises 20% making its total worth $7200. Gain of $1200. Stock B falls 20% making it worth $3200. Loss of $800. Within the same year you sell both stocks within days of each other. My question now is what would you have to pay taxes on. It would make sense that you would only have to pay taxes on $1200-$800= $400 because this is what you actually profited, but is this actually how it is, or do you have to pay tax on each realized gain and count each realized loss against your total income that you pay taxes on? Basically would you have to pay taxes on the $1200 that you gained and then get to deduct the loss of $800 from your taxable income? These aren't the same things if I'm thinking about this correctly? I feel like the stock is relatively low for the potential a company like Tesla can have, IMO like it or not I do believe that we will be moving towards more battery powered vehicles and away from fossil fuels because well... we're running out of time, and I feel like Tesla will be at the forefront of electric cars and other technologies that keep help us move away from oil... what do you guys think?
