Berkshire Hathaway profit falls as insurance underwriting declines and economy slows Posted: 03 Aug 2019 07:49 AM PDT Second-quarter operating profit declined 11% to $6.14 billion, or roughly $3,757 per Class A share, from $6.89 billion, or roughly $4,190 per Class A share, a year earlier. Analysts on average expected operating profit of $3,851.28 per share, according to Refinitiv IBES. Berkshire also said quarterly net income rose 17% to $14.07 billion, or $8,608 per Class A share, from $12.01 billion, or $7,301 per Class A share, a year earlier, reflecting higher unrealized gains on Berkshire's investments. Berkshire ended June with $122.4 billion of cash and equivalents, though it spent $2.1 billion in the quarter to repurchase its own stock. [link] [comments] |

Waste Management is my favorite stock, am I right for thinking so? Posted: 02 Aug 2019 05:32 PM PDT Solid growth, stable in market dips, has a dividend and can adapt with the market. If people gravitate to more recyclables, they can adapt to that etc. It has been on a large run over the last year, but it also traded extremely flat for 20 years from the early 90s to early 2010s. Do you see this growth to continue? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:46 AM PDT I have been tracking the S&P index as well as the S&P growth index, and it appears that in the long run, SPYG is the better investment. If you look at the index growth over any period > 1 month, SPYG outperforms SPY continuously. So why does it seem that the standard index is valued higher and endorsed by more investors than the growth index? Which do you recommend and why? (I used SPDR as an example, but the same applies to Vanguard's index, etc.) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2019 09:21 AM PDT Starbucks has increased significantly over the past year. Do you think there is much more growth to be had? Hoping someone more knowledgeable than me can weigh in. Also, do you think they will split the stock again soon? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:59 PM PDT Down over 75% y/y. High D:E but looking to turn that around. Also should be doing well in low oil price environment. Is this a sleeper anyone is watching? What am I missing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2019 11:23 AM PDT Hello, I'm kinda new into money management and passive income and I've decided to take the step into stocks. But I've seen that most of trading websites and app (if it isn't all of them) are disabled in Africa. How, as an African, could I invest in stocks? Thank you for reading. [link] [comments] |
Interesting companies working with cyber security and/or trends in cyber security Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:04 AM PDT I am pretty unknown in the cyber security, but I think that it is a very interesting sector. I would like to get to know a bit more about trends and/or companies that are having interesting (or innovative) products and/or services. I think/hope that in this sub with a broad audience there is more knowledge on the sector, would be great if somebody is able and interested in sharing his/her knowledge. [link] [comments] |
How do you organise your news inputs and optimise your daily news research? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:53 AM PDT Hi guys, I've been very unsuccessful recently losing 10% of my portfolio in a month and I realised its because I'm not doing enough due diligence and I'm not monitoring news which may impact stocks I hold. So what I'm trying to do: Replace checking Facebook and Instagram (friends feeds) which are a waste of time, with business news specific to sectors I follow and set up Google alerts around the brands I hold stocks of. Any ideas on how people do this more efficiently than just browsing financial Times or bloomberg? Much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Just starting, any reccomendations? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:28 AM PDT I am a newcomer to the stock market. I have around 200 dollars that I can invest initially and I work with a quite decent income. I want to learn this market because my future isn't entirely financially secure and I think it's important to start learning now while I'm young. Are there any books or websites where I can begin to learn stock trading if I'm very very minimally acquainted with stock trading? Also if you were me just starting out what is some information you had wish you'd have been told? Thank you so much and I appreciate the help :)! [link] [comments] |
Will there be a sell off on Monday 5th August 2019? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:53 PM PDT I'm new to investing and I bought shares this Friday on AMZ, GOOG, MSFT and FB when prices were down. At close of trading Friday I was down 0.67%. I'm concerned whether I should hold now or sell off on Monday to avoid a loss? Edit: I am not concerned that my portfolio is down a 0.67%, just concerned about Monday. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2019 05:57 AM PDT GE reported numbers that were OK, and in some respects, better than expected. Anyone think this thing has turned the corner? This stock has had more unpleasant surprises in the past two years....but the new guy seems to have a plan, albeit painful, to put things right. Just wondering what anyone else thinks. Also, exposure to the Max 737 or Chinese tariff stuff? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2019 11:02 AM PDT I'm looking for a risky stock to invest in that will garner me high profits. ETFs are also okay. [link] [comments] |
Is it good to buy shares in Disney now? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:42 AM PDT The stock is at an all time high right now with around $140. Is there any chance there will be more growth? [link] [comments] |
PSA: future earnings growth is what investors care about. Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:23 AM PDT I frequently see posts about people who question a stock's movement after earnings reports, with the idea that good earnings should move the price higher and bad earnings should move a stock lower. But what investors really care about is future earnings, and specifically growth potential in the context of the current valuation. For more details and information that is much larger than I can fit here, you can Google these things. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2019 09:57 AM PDT I'm getting re-acquainted with the world of investing, and I'm curious if people have ways of monitoring viral social trends for stocks to investigate. For instance, I had never heard of a certain alcoholic seltzer drink until a week ago, and then suddenly about 5 different sources independently referenced it. And apparently people are freaking out over oat "milk" now? I realize I might be late to hear about both these trends, but the real question is whether anyone has been able to derive actionable info from stuff like this, whether it's by personally being in the loop or doing formal research (eg, monitoring tending hashtags on Twitter?). Can I buy part of a share of stock? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 09:32 AM PDT For example, I want to put $50 into Apple, but can't afford the price of a full share. Is there a way for me to do this? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Class action lawsuit and they are asking me for capacity of person signing? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 09:30 AM PDT The examples given are beneficial purchaser, executor, or administrator. I just straight up bought 5 shares of this stock on my own account using my own cash and it stayed in my own account. I looked up beneficial purchaser and it doesn't apply to me but what do I call myself. I'm thinking maybe just "purchaser"? Any help appreciated [link] [comments] |
Any thoughts on Auxly and Aphria? $APHA and $CBWTF. Posted: 02 Aug 2019 11:41 PM PDT Doing some research into the cannibas side of things and come across these two. Speaks about great potential in the upcoming months and fiscal year. Wall Street says Auxly could go up by as much as over 3000%. Any input or further research? https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/08/01/3-best-cannabis-stocks-to-buy-in-august.aspx https://www.investors.com/news/marijuana-stocks-to-buy-cannabis-stocks/ [link] [comments] |
Thoughts on Intel & AMD stocks? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 04:54 AM PDT Hey. I saw both Intel and AMD stocks fell about 5$ in July, and I was thinking of buying some stocks now before I start my degree. Do you think it's worth investing in one of these now that the price is lower? Why/why not? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2019 08:18 PM PDT There's always talk about winners but I noticed this big drop when researching gaming stocks. Average analyst price target of $11.11, 1.7 buy rating, how did it get taken down so hard? Looks like its trailing PE is 438, forward is 9.64. Is this what happens when high flying stocks get the wind knocked out of them? What do you guys think: buy, sell or hold? [link] [comments] |
WEEDMD about to blast right through that old resistance??? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:29 AM PDT |
Recommendations on reallocating shares of USB. Posted: 02 Aug 2019 05:31 PM PDT So I recently inherited $20,000.00 worth of USB stock. I would like to reallocate at least half of what I have now if not more into other companies that may be a bit more high risk than USB. I understand that it is valuable to hold what I have now to collect dividends, however, I am in my 20's and I feel like I can take a bit more of a risk. Any advice or reccommendations as to how I could reallocate would be greatly appreciated. Thank you [link] [comments] |
