When Airbnb launched, you couldn’t book a room from their home page

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:28 AM PDT

When Airbnb launched - guests could not book a room directly from their home page! Instead, they had to first find an event to attend in a city, and only then could they view the rooms surrounding that particular event in the city.

Because they initially targeted people going for events, a lot of their initial hosts also offered breakfast each morning before the guests left for the event. Breakfast was so important that their initial website was named with breakfast in it! (airbedandbreakfast.com)

It was only almost two years laters that they dropped breakfast from the URL (and also stopped asking hosts to provide breakfast), booked a new domain (airbnb.com) and started focussing on just providing rooms to anyone traveling to a city.

Other interesting things to note when they launched:
    - They did not have payments
    - They did not have a map view listing all the rooms
    - To book a room, you had to go thru an event!
    - From the events page, you could see all the hosts surrounding providing rooms for that event.

Here are some images which shows how their first pages looked like.

    Cheers

Stuck in debt and depression and anxiety after two attempts at entrepreneurship. How do I get out?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:38 AM PDT

I have had my two attempts at entrepreneurship where I started a test prep website and a cab service. I work as a QA (not in the US) in a NYSE listed company and am being paid alright. As soon as I got the job after graduation, I took out a fairly small debt and hired a web development firm to make a website for taking practice tests for free. The web development firm was so slow in delivering, it took them 5 months to make a simple website which delayed the plan by a year. I entered all the tests and their questions myself manually (they were all plagiarized from text books). After this, I printed out fliers and distributed those manually by taking a week off and standing outside of colleges. I know, I was a noob at this and wasn't aware of online advertising. This time I'd do it all differently. The site garnered 500 visitors daily for about a month and then the interest dropped. With that I stopped investing my time in it.

Then I took out another loan, this time a good amount, to buy a car and start a cab service in my city. I was the second owner and the car had seen some miles. It was working good till it lasted. I hired a person to drive around and turned profit for the three months that the car was running. I was easily paying the debt off and planned on buying a second car and another every 4 months. But, the engine of the car froze. Had to take on more debt for the repairs. I restarted the cab service once the repairs were done, but the car started giving me more trouble putting me in more debt. I decided to write down my losses and sell the car at an eventual loss.

These two pursuits have put me in a fair amount of debt.

This was my journey of 3 years and since then I have been contemplating another try at it. I have been depressed as the debt is holding me down and will do so for 2 more years till I pay back every penny. This is giving me a lot of anxiety. The thoughts of not being successful even at my third attempt and staying in debt and a day job haunt me at night.

Anybody been in similar situations? How did y'all rise above this? Any advice with my mental situation? Any advice on how I should have pursued each of my startups?

How would you go about buying a business?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:35 AM PDT

I currently work as a manager in a batting cage. It's a dump but it has amazing potential. The location is centralized so it gets traffic from all over, traffic is predictable with seasons, the only problem is the owner treats it more like a self sustaining storage unit than a business. Office space filled with garbage, spare rooms filled with winter clothes.

I've remodeled the business plan of this place and know I could have it turned around entirely in two years time but I can't rely on the owner to do it so I wondered what the process is like for buying a business that fails to turn a profit (not dying only breaks even)

Has anyone had experience running their own online bookkeeping business?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:19 AM PDT

Small introduction, I'm in my mid-20's and already tired working for the same wages and capped at my pay. I've tried Amazon FBA but haven't been able to find the right niche to enter and don't have the funds to drop into a product, but I've seen several ads for bookkeeping online and making a decent wage that way.

What I found most attractive was that I'm already an accounting major and the start-up costs are significantly lower than anything else I can find. I understand starting any business is not easy, and I don't expect this to be any different. What I really want to know is if anyone can answer a few questions

    1. How did you get your first customers? (Was it through referrals and friends or did you get someone to jump the gun on your business?)

    2. How scalable is Bookkeeping for 1 person to handle? (My early goal is to have 10 customers paying monthly)

    3. How experienced were you when you first started? (I've only taking early accounting classes and have been working in sales for the past 7 years)

I'm thinking about a consulting business and could use some input and opinions

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:23 PM PDT

    Hi all.

As the title says, I'm thinking about doing some consulting work on the side. I am currently in a 9-5 (that I actually like) but I do want (a lot) more income.

The idea that I have is that I would help small-medium size businesses with automating some of their processes. I would meet with the decision-maker, go through the process with them, and write the code. The charge for my service would be $4k/month. I have a good idea about how to make this work operationally.

I am not an engineer or Comp-Sci major, but I do have experience automating processes with VBA/Excel, Python, and SQL, as I have worked in IT even though I am Finance focused (CFA Exams completed and all). I've seen enough weakness in tech skills in multiple industries that I don't think that a lack of engineering/comp-sci education would be a major hindrance to my efforts.

I'm 29 and have about 3 years of experience in multiple positions, all of which had varying degrees of what could be automated, but a lot of things could be automated in all of them.

As this will be a side-hustle, automating processes takes some time, and I don't want my current employer finding out, I can't handle too many clients to start (not that I'm expecting hundreds, but I can only handle 1 or 2 at the beginning).

How would I go about "advertising discretely"?

I'm also looking for criticisms on every aspect of this idea, and maybe for some people to share their experiences.

An idea but not sure if it makes sense?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 04:44 AM PDT

    Hi all,

As a book reader, the option available is Amazon Kindle or buy a physical book. The interaction of reading books requires either an external device just for reading books (Kindle) or a physical book (in-store). I'm not aware of any cross-platform service for reading books. Meaning you can read books on any device and formatted in the correct manner (like Medium).

Is this idea worth trying out?

I guess the niche will be portability but also I think a subscription model may be better off.

Let me know if a service exists (if any).

My gf is from Brazil, where people are getting poorer each day and many are hungry. To help at least some of them we want to have them handmake some items, which we then sell online in Europe labelled as "Handmade in Brazil". What are some good items they can make with minimal resources?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:12 AM PDT

    • we can provide some basic tools
    • we plan to give 100% of the profits to the people
    • items should be easy to ship
    • ideally the resources to make the items are easy to get (used plastic bottles, stones, scrap wood etc)

Is it appropriate to email my app users?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:50 PM PDT

I have about 200 users on my app right now, without any sales or advertising. I want to convert some of my existing users to customers on my apps premium subscription.

Is it appropriate to email them? How should this be done?

I value privacy and state this very clearly. I do not sell information. However, for customer service purposes I have access to the emails used to register on my app. Again, I do not sell any of this or let it leave my possession. My admin panel has an email marketing function, do people react to these emails as if they're standard and generic, or as if I've done something that would make them uncomfortable?

GramDoctor is a scam, bought a 6.1k travel account from them and got ghosted. Used to communicate often, completely stopped after purchase. Upvote this so other people see and don't get scammed, I don't care about karma.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:56 PM PDT

Bought an account from them for $115 dollars which had about 6 k followers, they would normally respond to my live chat questions within a few hours. After purchasing the account it's been a week+ and they haven't responded to my 30+ messages in live chat. Sent emails to both their support email and official outlook email and received not even one word back from them.

Don't buy accounts from them unless you want to get ghosted. Their other "growing services" are most likely fake as well, pretty sure someone complained about the powerlikes not doing jack. The reviews of GramDoctor all look fake. The guy who makes $10k a month is probably bullshit as well. All his posts are about using sites to grow IG accounts but claims he has no affiliation with them but clearly does. Even the way he talks in reddit is similar to how he spoke in the live chat.

TL;DR: GramDoctor is scam scam scam ScamDoctor. Don't ever use it.

5k Facebook page likes. How to use this properly?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:47 PM PDT

I have a page on Facebook that's based on a meme. Thinking it wouldn't be that popular, just for a laugh.

It now has close to 5k likes.

I was thinking, is there a way to make any money from this?

Changing the name? Advertising other pages/companies?

I'm big into gaming and music and thought maybe have it as a page where people can look for other people to team up in certain games?

    The power of crowdsourced business.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:43 AM PDT

In a world with cryptocurrency, social media, and crowdsourced lending platforms, one would think that we have reached the pinnacle of the crowdsourced economy. However, the reality is that the true potential of our interconnected world has not yet been unlocked.

Since humans have incorporated themselves into large organizations such as businesses and governments, they have enjoyed an increased power to effect change (for better or for worse) in the world. The coherent and unified efforts of many individuals has allowed for the accomplishment of the unthinkable.

Humans are naturally enterprising, but throughout history people organized behind a common cause have advanced the human condition beyond belief. We have placed humans on the moon, split the atoms, invented the computer, and doubled our life expectancy.

With the advent of the internet and social media, which have only really been around for about 25 years, people are now allowed to interact directly with others linked by an endless variety of commonalities. Think of how social media has empowered people to rally behind social causes in recent years!

This interconnected environment is ripe for the organization of massive global efforts and undertakings. No longer are the great accomplishments of the world solely in the domain of governments and large corporations! One person with a good idea can be heard and can make it a reality.

If you are interested by this philosophy, you should check out the site we just started www.crowdspark.org. It is dedicated to connecting passionate people to build long-term and dedicated teams to make things happen.

    Restaurant Training Business

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:12 AM PDT

I am always looking for ways to become successful, and having tried to start running my own business several times I'm still at a loss.

My newest venture is to start a training company, specifically a restaurant management training business, helping local restaurants train supervisors and managers in people management.

I have several years experience within the restaurant industry and have management experience, so I strongly believe that I have the knowledge and experience to deliver effective training classes.

My only question is I'm not 100% sure on where to start. Has anyone set up a training company before? Is it still a profitable venture with all the e-learning these days?

How to determine pricing/fees for an App?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:34 AM PDT

I've been working on an application for a while now and getting to the point where I'm thinking of the business model more seriously. To put it very simply users will be transacting/interacting with each other, and I will be taking a % cut of this.

The question I've run in to is how much should this cut be? Not sure how tech/app businesses come to their prices.

    Average rev growth rate

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 09:08 AM PDT

So I am hoping there are some people out there that know where I can find average revenue growth rates for startup/smaller companies. I realize "average" makes this a tough task, but I need some form of a comparison for board research I am doing.

This would be in the tech space, more specifically SaaS.

    Appreciate the help in advance.

Found some great calculators that answer my question. Thought there would be good to share

    ATM Business Start up- Banks

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 10:07 PM PDT

I'm looking to start up a private owned ATM business. I have the capital to start, but I'm at a stand still with finding a bank that will even accept the idea of me owning an ATM business, despite me understanding the demands of BSA program.

How do I find a bank that is compliant with BSA and willing to accept my idea? I've researched enough to see how to run an ATM business so I don't get shut down, but I can't find the bank willing to help. I'm in southern CA. Thank you.
