Victim of fake check. Bank of America refusing to honor my claim for over $2400. Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:46 PM PDT 06/13/2019 I looked at my mobile banking app from BofA and there was a "return item charge back" for the amount of $2455.09 and a fee of $12 made on 06/10/2019. I called customer support right away and the representative told me that it was a fake check that was cashed at a branch in Los Angeles, whom ever did this also had my PIN. Got transferred to the fraud claim department and replace my current card and froze my account. About a week goes by and I call to get an update. They briefly told me that it is still being worked on and it can take 60 business days. I understand these things take time. Okay time to set my calendar to 09/09/2019. 06/14/2019 a letter comes in the mail to notify me of this returned item charge back. There is a picture of the check at the bottom and I noticed that my name was not even spelled correctly. So it's safe to say they didn't even check ID before handing money over. 06/27/2019 made a complaint to BBB in hopes to speed up the process. Got a couple calls from BofA but was not able to converse about it, I tell them to give it to me in writing. At this point about 80 days have passed and no word from them. 08/16/2019 made a complaint to CFPB explaining this situation. Again to speed it up. 08/28/2019 got an email from CFPB that the company is still working on it. 08/29/2019 got a response from BofA and they are NOT honoring this claim because the signature matches with their samples. This troubles me because from the time I opened this account (~2015) I have never cashed a check or written personal checks. I don't withdraw that much cash. Ever. I know this is somewhat of a cop out to just keep complaining on the internet. But I cant really make calls at work and when it's time to clock out I can no longer speak to a human on the phone. What's your advice? What more can I do? Tia [link] [comments] |
Pay Down Wife’s Student Loan or hold out? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:51 AM PDT We've been aggressively paying down my wife's student loan debt over the past 2 years (80K) and as of this Friday it'll be down to 18K. We live in a low cost of living area with average jobs 63K salary for me and 43K for her. We work hard with side hustles etc. and contributed an extra 3-5K a month. I found out that I'll be losing one of my side hustles and now we'll drop to 2-3K a month in extra income to apply to the loan. Our emergency fund is 10K and I'm debating using 9K of that to just nearly pay off all her debt and be done with it because I'm psychologically attached to limiting all spending because of it. I don't foresee job changes for either of us in the next 3-4 months because it would definitely be paid off by then. Or do I continue to drag it out and keep the 10K emergency fund? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:04 PM PDT My wife and I bought a nectar mattress in March 2019 and specifically chose it because of the 365 day "trial" where you can return it for a full refund, as per their website. My wife has contacted support multiple times in the last two weeks and after much runaround, they finally offered all our money back save for $175 and we keep the mattress. We told them we wanted a full refund as per their website and they have dodged us ever since. They had my wife on hold for 30+ minutes yesterday and then just blatantly hung up on her. I bought the mattress on our Amex card and I believe we can protest the charge, but Amex's website can only let us go back 6 statements, which is just outside of when the charge hit our card. I wasn't sure if I called them that would be any different. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Seriously, build an emergency fund Posted: 29 Aug 2019 11:06 AM PDT Where I live in Florida is right in the line of hurricane Dorian. Was able to buy an almost last min ticket using my emergency fund for a potentially serious emergency. Never underestimate the helpfulness of these rainy day funds. On top of that, know the areas you live in and the type of insurance you need (aka hurricane or flood insurance) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:02 PM PDT They said they want to make s sure that they can move fast and be ready for an offer… And asked for my current compensation including base salary, stock and bonus… I gave them ranges such as mid 100s and bonus of double digit percentage… But she kept grilling me until I gave up more specific numbers… How should I have handled it and is this behavior expected in the hiring process? My mother, insurance policyholder, cashed a check for my insurance claim. Posted: 29 Aug 2019 12:04 PM PDT For a brief period of time in 2017-2018, I had health insurance through Blue Cross/Blue Shield under my mother. In early 2018, I went to the hospital and was admitted overnight for a couple of days. Recently, I found out that I have an open account in collections, in excess of $5000, regarding the hospital visit. After contacting the collections agency, I found that the insurance claim was filed correctly and BC/BS "paid directly to the patient". After contacting BC/BS I found out that a check was mailed out, due to the provider being out-of-network (the claim for the hospital visit itself was covered and processed automatically). The letter was in my name, and contained an "explanation of benefits", and a check for the full amount, and was sent to the address of the policy holder (my mother). The explanation of benefits stated that the provider was out of network, and contained information of who to pay the money to. They also noted that the check was in my mother's name, since she is the policyholder, and was cashed as of April 2018. I called my mother and she stated that she did not specifically remember getting the letter or cashing the check (who doesn't remember cashing a $5k+ check???), but after contacting her bank, she did indeed deposit a check for the same amount on the same day that BC/BS provided. My mother stated that with her current financial state, she was in no way able to pay, or even help to pay, the bill. She also said that she was completely unaware that I had credit and was confused as to why this was bothering me. (uhh???) I know I made the mistake of not consistently checking my credit report, but everything from the collection letters to the letter with the check was sent to her address, since she is the policyholder.... Is there any recourse here? I know I've been royally screwed by my mother, but I can't help feeling like I've been screwed by BC/BS since the check was in my mother's name, and not the name of the member the claim was for (me). Should I decline the promotion? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 10:18 AM PDT I'm on mobile, this is my very first post. Excuse any mistakes, thanks. I am currently a lead server at a well known family owned restaurant in Southern California. I was recently offered the opportunity to be the restaurant manager. I did one interview with the owner/current general manager (GM) and district manager and I was told I got the job 2 days later. I have been waiting for their offer letter for about 2 weeks. The GM told me yesterday that the offer will be ready today and he gave me a run down of what it will be and I am not as excited about the "promotion" as I was to start. In the restaurant industry, it's not uncommon for the restaurant manager to make less than the servers, but I didnt expect to lose wages and add hours. Also to make matters worse he said it would be salary. He made it seem like that was a good thing because "if I didnt get 40 hours that week I'd be paid for it anyway", but really the point of salary is so I can work over 40 hours and not be paid overtime. This position has a history of people getting burnt out from being over worked. I can handle some stress, I'm okay with that, but I dont want to end up hating my life and my job... Heres the comparison for my wages currently and what they would be with the promotion... My current wages (they vary slightly): Average $500 a week in tips = $500 Wages $13 an hour X 25 hours = $325 Total weekly income = $825 Minus tax = $660 For 25 hours = Gross salary = $42,900 Net salary = $34,320 This is what my wages will be: Wages $20 an hour X 40 hours = $800 Minus tax = $640 For 40 hours = Gross salary = $41,600 Net salary = $33,280 Is there a positive to this opportunity that I'm missing? Has anyone gone through something similar? I have already let the GM know after he described this as their offer that I may say no. He didnt react to that much so I'm not sure what to do at this point. At the start of this I was really excited to work on tightening up the loose screws around the restaurant because we are no where near what we could be productivity wise. Rules are lax, tempers are short, and consistentancy is not our policy. Thankfully we have really good food and regulars because the quality of service and inconsistency would probably be the end of us. Do I take the offer, do I ask for more or do I go on about my life as a server? Is the experience more valuable than the money in the long run? [link] [comments] |
Someone accessed me CreditKarma account at 2:00am this morning Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:20 AM PDT So the password that I was using for this account was a leaked password that was breached about 5 years ago. Up until this point noone had ever tried accessing this account. I have already signed in and changed the password as a security measure, and I understand I was negligent in that I was using a leaked password. My question is should I be concerned as to what type of information was gathered? [link] [comments] |
Getting paid in USD in US account, need to pay off CAD credit card Posted: 29 Aug 2019 07:35 PM PDT Hi PF, I need some help! I got a job in the US and will be paid in USD. I have a Tangerine credit card (CAD) that I would like to pay off as soon as I start having some cash flow. I'm unclear on how I can transfer my USD to pay off my CAD credit card. -I plan to open a US based bank account where I will receive my USD paycheck, probably Wells Fargo since they have a lot of presence where I will be working -In addition to my Tangerine credit card, I also have a Tangerine checking and savings account (all CAD). I plan to open a USD Tangerine savings account shortly Does it make sense to open a TD/RBC/Scotia USD based account and transfer my money from Wells Fargo to those accounts? Then transfer money from there to my US Tangerine savings account? Once I have USD in Tangerine, can I directly pay off my credit card? How does that conversion work? Do I need to move it from USD savings to CAD checking/savings and THEN pay off my credit card? lol I've looked into Transferwire but they said, "Currently we can only pay Canadian dollars into bank accounts in Canada, and not other currencies such as US dollars." tl;dr - If I'm being paid in USD to a US account, how can I pay off my CAD credit card THANK YOU! Hurricane Dorian is coming and I don't have renters insurance Posted: 29 Aug 2019 10:57 AM PDT It seems that everywhere I look to get renters insurance, I can't get a quote because of the upcoming storm. Is there anything I can do having just moved in? [link] [comments] |
Someone tried to open credit application in my name using my SSN but failed. What to do next? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:48 PM PDT Someone used my SSN to apply for credit application for Sprint. Luckily, sprint told them to go to a store with 2 forms of ID. I received a letter saying my application couldn't be processed at the time, I verified that a hard pull on my credit was not completed. Here's what I have done so far: Froze equifax, experian, trans union, innovis, chexsystems, and placed a fraud alert with equifax. What else do I need to do ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:42 PM PDT Hello guys, A few years back I inherited a trust and the initial investment was $98k, after almost 5 years the trust paid out so I have a windfall, and I have read through the windfall guidelines. Currently the account sits around $126K, so Im averaging after EJ's fees 6k per year on a sizable chunk of money, and factoring in inflation its really not preforming for the money EJ is taking out of it in fees. The taxes paid out of the account average around $1,000/yr but that will change because it's no longer under a legal trust I assume? The advisor is a genuinely nice person, but his honesty came off a bit rude when I was told my insignificant amount of money didn't matter to his $200,000,000 total portfolio. I am currently 25 years old, in-between jobs, and a full time student with minimal expenses. So its time to break up with Edward Jones. My question is which company should I go with? Im looking for an aggressive investment plan with international investments, a good portion of American stocks, a smaller quantity of bonds, and about 5% cash reserve. I see Vanguard, Fidelity, and Schwab all have similar account fees if any, they have higher returns than EJ as well. Also looking for recommendations on a spread of funds, what do you all have experience with? [link] [comments] |
I got a job offer and have to break my lease resulting in a $2500 fee. Posted: 29 Aug 2019 12:16 PM PDT Recently got a job offer in a completely different city after I signed a lease for October. I wasn't expecting my promotion this early or else I wouldn't have signed the lease but here we are. Is there anything I can or should do? Or am I just out of luck? I'm 22 and I don't just have $2500 to shell out. I do have a credit card with a limit above $2500. [link] [comments] |
Kinda lost on what to do with an old debt that wasn’t resolved properly? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:36 PM PDT So basically I was in the military stationed overseas for two years. I put my phone on a military hold when I went over. Everything worked as normal. Then months later I get a letter in the mail saying I owed the phone company money. I contacted them quite a few times, which was expensive from overseas, and told them about the military hold and how the charges were supposed to be essentially on pause until I returned. Every time we spoke they assured me the charges would be dropped as the military hold wasn't supposed to be removed. The chargers were never retraced no matter who I spoke with. I had to resort to using the online support chat things since contacting them by phone was expensive, I managed to get screenshots of them telling me the hold wasn't supposed to suspended and the charges. I didn't have to deal with. I eventually called one more time and they told me to deal with the issue at my nearest att store when I returned home but it wouldn't be a problem until then. Well I was extended overseas for another year and the first thing I did was go to a store. They couldn't help me so they put me on a phone call with their legal department. I talked with their legal department and nothing, no help, entirely snarky the whole time despite me being polite. But again my mistake I didn't record it. Kinda at my wits end here. What exactly should I do at this point? I would rather not pay it as it was never supposed to be charged in the first place. Do I have to deal with the collections agency directly now? 30 years old, help with retirement saving Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:04 PM PDT I am 30 years old and single with no kids Savings 66k 401k 53k Vanguard 5k (VFAIX) HSA 1k Mortgage -150k (13 years left, house is probably worth 180k) Vehicles Owned 30k Take home income home after all deductions and HSA/401k contributions 127k, and my annual spend is 73k which is very generous and has a lot of play for travel and entertainment. I also get a company vehicle. I contribute $9,600 to 401k per year. there is a very long explanation as to why I cannot contribute more. I am working on a resolution however lets assume that's my max contribution moving forward. I also get an employer match of $1,920 per year I just started my HSA 4 months ago, and will be maxing it out annually. What do I do with the remaining 54k each year, would it be possible to retire at 50? [link] [comments] |
IRS interest rates remain the same for the fourth quarter of 2019. Looking to buy my first house. Question about bank owned/foreclosed homes. Posted: 29 Aug 2019 06:13 PM PDT As the title says I'm 19 looking to buy a house. Me and my wife found a really nice house 2,000+ sqft near my work and her college for around $70k. I noticed that the house is forclosed and now bank owned. Im looking between just a conventional loan or an FHA loan, it will depend mostly on the down payment amount. I have a bank I've already talked with and should be able to get pre approved by, but then I had a thought. Would it be better to try to do a loan through the bank that owned the home? Would that make any part of this process easier? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 08:14 PM PDT Most of the discussions about "mortgage + insurance + disaster" seem to be about ability or inability to keep making monthly mortgage payments if the house gets destroyed. I have a different question. If I can continue making monthly payments after the house gets completely destroyed. What happens once the insurance company pays out? Would the bank want to get their remaining balance from that insurance money right away and close out the loan? Or would I be able to keep the entire insurance payout and use that money to build a new house while still making monthly payments to the bank? I'm trying to figure out if I would be able to build a new house using insurance money and continue making my mortgage payments or if I would in effect be left with my land and the equity I had in the house and would have to look for a loan to build or buy a new house. 401k transfer from old plan to new plan distribution Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:21 PM PDT I think I may be getting confused on this wording here? My wife received this from her previous employer in a 401k options package in the mail. I believe she has about $300-400 in the account so not a lot, does she have to take a distribution with penalties or can she rollover to her new employers plan? ...I am confused if the distribution meaning is in relation to it exiting the old 401k or if it refers to taking it all in cash which would result in the penalty for withdrawing. Also regarding the 30 days does she only have 30 days to do this ..I think she is benefits eligible after 1 month at her new position so it will likely kick in then? Under the law you have the right to consider your payment elections for at least 30 days from the date you receive this distribution package from the benefits administrator. The 30 day rule is intended to give you sufficient time to weight your payment options. However you my waive the 30 day period and receive your distribution sooner. If your vested balance is $5k or less the plan requires that you take the distribution. If you do not return the forms to your benefits administrator within 30 days, your distribution will either be paid in a lump sum or will be automatically rolled over to an IRA. If your vested balance is less than $1k, your distribution will be paid to you in a lump sum. If you have attained the later age of 62 or the plans normal retirement age and your vested balance is less than $5k, your distribution will be paid to you in a lump sum. If your vested balance is between $1k and 5k and you have not attained the later age of 62 or the plans normal retirement age, your distribution will be automatically rolled over into an IRA as explained in the enclosed "supplement notice regarding plan payments". Please note that lump sum distributions above $200 are subject to mandatory 20% federal income tax withholding." [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:52 PM PDT I got a $10k raise on my salary for the next year. I was given the option to take the $10k cash as a bonus right now or have it on my salary for the next year. My initial thought is to take the cash because I can put it in my mutual fund all at once and potentially earn more on it than if it just trickled in on my paychecks over the next year. But it would also be nice to be able to claim my higher salary when I'm going for a new job. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 08:01 PM PDT My university is stopping management of all student organization financial accounts. The department that used to oversee the funds is only releasing the remaining balance on each club's accounts unless they have an EIN and have created a bank account for the club. Creating an EIN and bank account requires people to use their SSN. Would this impact me or any other person's credit negatively? Are there any other financial concerns we should be cautious of? How long should I wait before I start looking for another job? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:38 AM PDT I am 20, and I was lucky to get a job as an Account receivable analyst that pays 18.75 an hour and I have absolutely no college degree or experience in accounting. I've been at my job for almost 1 year. How long should I stick it out at my current position before I start looking for better deals? I know in my head that I should stay for at least 2 years before I start looking, but in my heart I feel like I could find something better with better benefits. I'm worried that in my current field with no college degrees that I'll be stuck and stagnant. What is everyone's opinion? [link] [comments] |
