My mom started a company when she turned 50.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:25 AM PDT

I wanted to share something with you guys, because so many of us struggle with the idea that its too late to become a founder, or too early, or not the right time.

I want to tell you about my mom, Sophia. She's an immigrant from Taiwan.

She lived her childhood in an orphanage. She was abused. Abandoned. She never gave up. She broke out. Then broke out her brothers and sisters. She found my grandfather and forced him to give them a home. She went to night school and sold trash during the day. She got into the best high school in Taiwan. She taught herself English. When she spoke out against the Vietnam war, she was forced to leave. She came to America. Married my father. Traveled the world. When my parents got divorced she was left with nothing, she had never worked before.

She got her first corporate job. Within 5 years she was the best salesperson in the company. One day after she landed a huge contract, she came into work and the VP of the company introduced her to the man who would be taking control of the contract, instead of her. Then they asked her to get the coffee to discuss the transition. A few of the staff protested, but most didn't say anything.

She quit. She called me. We started a company. Her first ever venture at 50 years old. I was 20. We had nothing, I worked full time as a paralegal to help pay the rent, each day divided into 8 hours of company, 8 hours job, 8 hours everything else. We worked out of Starbucks for 2 years, didn't get an office for 3. We would share a single cup of tea and ask for refills, we were BROKE.

That company now has 200 employees and does $18M in annual revenue. (Mom. I am so proud of you!!!!!!)

Oh. You might find this photo interesting. She was asked to testify before the US senate on small business a few years ago. The entire room cried when they heard the story. Yes. That's Eva Longoria next to her.

An article in the Post said that nobody remembered what Eva said, because of the testimony of Sophia Parker about a little company called DSFederal who gives away its profits to orphans around the world.

It is never too late. It is never too soon. You can do it! I know your struggle, every day, I know how hard it is. But I want you to know something.

In the end, after all the struggle, after all the pain after all the sacrifice.

    YOU WIN.

    Stay at it, start today.

How can I start a business when I'm not sure what I want to do?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 05:57 AM PDT

I read articles all the time about people, kids even, who start a business because they're super passionate about something; people, tech, hobby, etc and I can't seem to find mine in order to start my own business. I have always had the entrepreneurial spirit but I've never been particularly good at anything aside from softball, cooking (following recipes, never tried creating them) and animals. I've googled business ideas for pets but most that I would be interested in seem really saturated or I'm not sure there'd be a market for it in the area I live in. My city has about 60k residents but it's mainly lower to middle class with some upper spread around. I'm really drawn to making treats or toys but isn't that super saturated? I'm also considering starting a pooper scooper business but how do I find out if there's a market for it where I live? I'm in Alabama and have to take driving and gas into consideration as opposed to someone who lived in a more urban setting.

At the same time, I'd love a business I could work from home but something more craft/building related but what hasn't been done yet?

    Appreciate any and all advice!

I'm struggling without mentors and all people will do is try sell to me

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 03:02 AM PDT

I'm an entrepreneur and have done well with a few side hustles before, however now I'm not doing so good.

I don't have any friends or family (I was abandoned as I'm trans) and I have very little professional support, no mentors or anything.

It's hard to open up about my struggles and now I'm literally one month away from starting to rack up debt I'm really just trying to talk to people, learn what they have to share, be inspired by their growth, etc. and figure out what to do.

The problem is, everyone I talk to tried to sell me something. One person had the audacity to tell me to go £95 into credit as I only have £900 in my bank and their course is £995.

I feel so terrible! So demotivated, too. All these people are telling me to buy this course, no this course, etc etc. And I know they're ALL just opportunists trying to literally take my last dime. Are there any positive communities I can join where people give advice, offer support, etc? I'm trying beer money but that's also very demotivating as I'm making like £3 an hour, lol

If you read this far, thanks!

Email Marketing and CRMS. Nightmares and Paradises. BATTLE IT OUT!

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:14 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

We are discussing the optimal CRM/email marketing platform to use for our company. My current lead has experience with ActiveCampaign and MailChimp.

What tools do you all use?

What do you like about them?

What do you hate about them?

More info on us: we are a Chinese school in Seattle and take in 30-100 enrollment requests per month. We are trying to maintain budget while automating our student contact and enrollment process to reduce resource waste. Our student come through GoogleAds-drawn form submissions. We are mostly focused on automating contact management.

NOTE: ActiveCampaign is upward bound of our budget.

How to Easily Track Companies, Competitors, Investors and Funding Rounds with Crunchbase Data in a Spreadsheet

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 06:15 AM PDT

dashdash, a no-code spreadsheet platform that gives you access to business data and APIs, now offers a Crunchbase integration that allows you to retrieve lists of companies based on specific criteria and filters, enrich companies' data, and track sector funding activities, all within the spreadsheet.

You don't need a Crunchbase account or an API key. You just connect the integration to your account and start using its functions right away. You can then automate the process by using automation functions, set up alert systems with Slack, email or SMS, and even send the data to your CRM using different integrations with HubSpot, Pipedrive, or Zoho.

The video in the link below shows how to use the integration and showcases some of its use cases.

Learning from my mistakes | Young entrepreneur 21 years old | Part -2 (Survived to write about part two)

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:44 AM PDT

    Hello,
I have written a post a month ago with the title Learning from my mistakes | Young entrepreneur 21 years old | Part -1 (Hopefully if I survive this there will be part two)

And yes I have survived to the part 2 :D

Info about me with a note:

I'm a 21-year-old entrepreneur, as you will probably notice through reading this, I'm not a native English speaker, so don't focus too much on my English.

Started to make $1-5k/mo with apps when I was 16 and it grew from that. At the age of 19 sold the portfolio of apps I had and opened a software development company. I taught it will be interesting to make software for others, and I taught it will be fast money(far away from my thoughts)

Earned till my 19th year of age close to $600k with apps.

How have I solved the situation

I ended up finishing the project almost on time and I got the money(it was harder than I aught and I was late 1 day for salaries) and we have gotten a contract which will support us till the end of this year. It has decreased the pressure I had on my shoulders and at least I have time till the end of the year to find more projects and to monetize more my products.

Things I have learned the last month

    1. Keep a professional relationship between clients even if you have a friendship bound. (I have been very cool with a client and he didn't want to pay for the development which we have spent which could collapse my whole company, try to keep things professional and get paid regularly and deliver regularly. For the ones who will say that we have not delivered quality, the reason was not that it was that he had no money but told us that he has.)
    2. Less is more (From my experience it's better to develop less but to have quality at a high level and to measure it rather than creating a lot of things which don't have good quality and are not measured)
    3. What's measured can be managed (After I have started to analyze user behaviour I have realized that with minor colour changes, or another text that I can get better conversion from free to pro users for up to 5%!!! I knew that it could help but my thoughts were that a feature would increase conversions. Lesson learned, keep things simple and measure what you have made)
    4. Tell people that they have done a good job even if they have not (You need to understand even if someone has failed at some work that you need to support them. One of my employees is going through a rough time, I don't know what it is it's his private thing but I see that his work performance is very low. Instead of criticizing him I have decided to tell how his previous work is performing very good, and that he should be proud of himself. It gave him a boost and he is pefforming a lot better than before)
    5. Don't lose focus! (While I have developed the code of my product, I have not mantained the user satisfaction. It has killed my revenues a bit, but I have managed to refocus and keep the revenues in a balance. Know your priorities and don't lose focus!)

    Starting to use my brain

After making mistakes for so many years I have decided to switch the game plan! I will use my brain more now and won't let the comport zone take advantage of me!

My goal for this month is to create a new source of money either by creating a new development department for smaller projects of max 20 days of development or creating a new app which I will monetize.

    See you next month!

I am hiring my very first employee. What advice do you wish you had been given for your first hire?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 09:46 PM PDT

I run the fastest-growing Mandarin school in Seattle, WA. I am the teacher, curriculum developer, marketing lead, website designer, etc etc. My first employee is starting this week; he will be overseeing marketing and curriculum revisions (Godsend of a guy fairly versed in both). I spent the last few weeks finally putting all of my pen and paper notes and consolidating Google documents into a series of very descriptive, yet concise "state of the company" documents. These explain where we are, and where I would like to be regarding specific tasks (email marketing, client-acquisition automation, etc).

However, I now realize: I have no idea what my actual game plan is for managing; I have never done it before.
What practices are not conducive to success?
How do you encourage your employees to be proactive and find answers?
How do you keep employees engaged and caring about the work?
What advice do you wish you had been given for your first hire?

    Question on market research.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:20 PM PDT

Do you know of any tools or ways to look into the age and history of businesses?

I am doing some research in a U.S. metro area and I want to filter through potential clients by the age of their business, but I am unsure how to determine this outside of just calling and asking. Which would be a premature approach.

I'm curious to know your thoughts or perspective.

Any advice on starting a seaweed farm in the UK?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:02 PM PDT

I keep thinking about starting a seaweed farm but I know absolutely nothing about being at sea, farming or any other prerequisites really. What I do know is that I want to do my part for the environment and that not only is farming seaweed great at that but it looks fun to me.

Looking for any advice, seaweed farmers in particular.

Need help meeting clients needs. (Marketing Company - T Shirts)

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 12:57 PM PDT

In a nutshell, I have been running a digital social media marketing company for several clients in various fields (mostly medical).

They are please with the services and results thus far. They wanted to offer me more business by asking me to provide them with a quote on T-Shirts for an event they have coming up.

I've tried to do the basic Google research on this topic; however, I'm finding that I having more questions than answers on this.

So I guess what I'm trying to ask is that where should I start? I have the details of the logo and the quantity they are requesting. The event is not until October so I have plenty of time.

Should I start with local printers? Or is there a known online service provider that I should inquire first? What is the average markup I should forward to the client?

I simply don't want to drop the ball on this, for I know they tend to host several events a year.

Thanks in advance for any input.

My drop shipping store needs help.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 12:40 PM PDT

    Hi,

I really enjoy this community and I got inspired by many of you. I started caring for myself and for who I really am. That led me to do a lot of research and finally make my own store, which was a dream of mine for a long time. I plan on learning more about dropshipping and do my best on delivering the best men accessories I can. I only have 3 items but I will keep working hard and grow as much as I can. I hope you guys can support me by providing me with tips on how I can change my store because my store is pretty awful looking and I have no idea how to change it since it's the first time I make one. My brand name is also pretty trash. Please help me and don't hesitate to order or suggest products for my store.

Give me perspective on a regular job

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:35 AM PDT

Long story short I have to get a regular job for now, to pay bills, and then I guess go home and work on studying/researching/applying my craft so I can get good at it, demonstrate results, and turn it into making a living.. but that's gonna take like a year or less maybe..

so in the mean time, im having serious dread and worrying, nervousness, fear, feeling scared about going in somewhere to get a job..I've never had one.. I've always worked for myself, survived, but this time, there's no way I'm going to suddenly generate money over night and have to avoid the job thing

I think I just hate the idea of getting a job, so now knowing I have to go do that, it creates this immense worry and sense of dread..

Can anyone give words of encouragement or something to make me feel better, or give some perspective or maybe you have been through this.. Maybe you can say a few sentences that might make me feel more okay about this whole thing..

I figure you guys might understand best because you guys surely have to be just like me, where you always wanted to be your own boss, this is like almost painful for me that it's "come to this".. I know that sounds lame, and trust me I've gained a lot of appreciation for those that do work regular jobs.. and I don't think of it as a bad thing.. but it's like so many years of conditioning.. If you go like 15 years without ever having a regular job, I feel like you do kinda become conditioned.. so it's that much harder for me, and I've been kinda dragging my feet but hopefully by this week ill be out applying at places.. =/ fuck I just feel sad even as I write this.

Small Business. My credit card processor charged me $1.00 instead of $0.10 per credit card transaction and refuses to refund.

What sort of federal and CA state agencies can I report to about this? The difference has cost my business thousands of dollars. I'm aware there are options to litigate. I'm specifically asking if there are complaints I can file with state and federal agencies before going to court.

I have an idea on developing a cheap product to sell but have zero idea where to begin

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 11:32 AM PDT

Ive always been incredibly ambitious to become an entrepreneur but I've never dived in as I have no knowledge or even idea on where to begin.

I want to start selling customised mugs and it can be as simple as having them printed with my designs printed on them or I get all arts and crafts on them but where would I begin? I know that shops like Etsy and Pinterest would be good markets but how would I expand my market / people who buy from me or even know of my product? How much could something like this cost??

How do you respond to “are you ethically/sustainably sourced?” when you’re not but you’re working on it?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 03:17 AM PDT

I'm just at the beginning of my business and have already heard this question a lot. I expect it to come up more and more from gen z customers, how do you position yourself when asked this?

Also, I want to be able to share my journey towards sustainability with my customers and be transparent without hurting my brand too much, any advice?

    Here is where I'm at:

I am bootstrapping a unique fashion product. The industry is huge so there are thousands of manufacturers but no company that I know of is designing or selling their product my way. This idea was burning inside me, I couldn't believe it didn't exist already and people were constantly asking me where to get it, and best of all I believed the product could share a deeper purpose I was passionate about and build a community around it. I wanted to make it happen before someone else did.

My first test run sold out (200 products) and it proved that there are people and retailers like me that get the deeper meaning and love the product itself and I even saw the little community begin to sprout online and in my city.

My goal from the start was to make them 100% ethically and sustainability sourced but I had no manufacturing or business experience and quickly learned that I couldn't afford it at such a small scale and my customers wouldn't be able to either. So I went for it with the resources I had and I made sure my products were sourced responsibly within my means. My manufacturer meets international health and safety requirements standard in the industry and although I couldn't afford to fly to meet them in person, I have taken video tours of their facilities.

When I sold out I broke even and decided to invest again in a small line of products which I will launch soon. My budget and order size still couldn't afford sustainable options for the product itself but I will be using sustainable packaging. I also made the product much higher quality with a protective case and will be encouraging value and care for the product. I am also considering some kind of send back recycling discount program since it is fairly fragile.

I'm not doing this to make quick cash, I won't even care when copy cats come out, I'm doing it for the greater meaning and community the product creates. After this phase I should be profitable and plan to reinvest it entirely back into the business with more sustainability and ethics as my main goals. I am currently vetting US factories and in case i can't make it happen I have set milestones to switch to recyclable and biodegradable materials, fund trips to the factory, contract on site agents to ensure full time ethical practices, and eventually hire someone to ensure material sourcing transparency.

I would like to be more prepared to share my sort of sustainability road map with my customers. I also want to share some version of this story on my blog at some point and be honest about my journey and struggles to start up sustainably in the fashion world.

I have you guys to thank for giving me the resources and encouragement to turn my idea into reality, thank you! Any feedback or advice or criticism around this would be much appreciated!

Advice on finding an overseas partner please

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 10:46 AM PDT

I have a product in Italy that I believe I can purchase and import then resell for decent Margins. My issue is I do not have any local contacts on the ground to facilitate the purchasing and shipping to me.

Because I would be attempting retail shop arbitrage (buying from retail shop, ship to US and resell) I cannot simply reach out to the manufacturer. I need a middle person. Was thinking I could find a hungry person to pair up with me but not really sure how.

Has anyone had a similar issue and what was your solution for finding a partner in a foreign country.

Thanks for any advice or input.

Public/Private School should be teaching students to be inventors.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 10:31 AM PDT

If school created students that found solutions to problems "outside of the box", made students creative, eager to learn, open to constructive criticism, innovative, and sought improvements to nonexistent problems, like making a more fuel-efficient engine, then school would be like Silicon Valley.

School wouldn't be boring, homework would be replaced with projects, You are graded by effort. You can create your own project for multiple people or only yourself to work on, or join someone else's project. Patents exist and can be created and sold. It is a thriving community of inventors. You can choose your own deadline or vote on a deadline, but you are graded daily by teachers for average daily effort.

A.I is embraced as it does repetitive work for us, while we intelligent humans create new things for A.I to help succeed.

Or you can choose to learn a skill, but good luck because in the future A.I will replace you in xyz job or career.

Tell me what you think this improvement or overhaul of school means to you, how it can be improved, or what you think about this proposition. Thank you for reading this.

Do you attend onlne courses to grow your business? Is it worth doing?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 10:07 AM PDT

Just wondering how many entrepreneurs buy online courses to improve their business and what the effect is. Is it worth doing? I know some entrepreneurs that have no idea how to grow their business and don't understand fundamentals, but they don't buy any courses. What's wrong with it? To useless? To expensive? Lack of free time? What?

I appreciate it if you could share in a couple of words whether or not you buy business courses and why. If you purchased any, what were the experience and the outcome for your business? Have you gained your revenue? How much? Thanks in advance.

Best Solution for Small-Scale DIY Shipping / Fulfillment?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:42 AM PDT

My company recently completed a small crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo and we have approximately 50 orders of a small size product to ship. We plan to fulfill everything ourselves. This is big enough to warrant some sort of tool to handle the shipping and label printing, but too small for most fulfillment solutions.

Is there some sort of in-between solution where I can easily upload an Excel file of addresses, get a quote, print labels, and get tracking numbers?

    Work from home entrepreneurship?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:19 AM PDT

The company I work at is undergoing a major ownership change, and I really feel anxious about that. I have no idea what this is going mean for my day to day. It'll be like working at a different company. The previous managers weren't exactly trustworthy but at least they weren't total assholes. These new people could be complete assholes, dictators, dickheads, etc, I have no idea. I can tell you I've worked with some bad bosses in my time, so who knows.

It's another reminder to me how nice it would be to work for myself, a work from home entrepreneur where I can have total control of my schedule, job duties, etc. There's just a lack of control being someone else's employee. I'd rather have full control of my day.

Anybody here a work from home entrepreneur? What do you do?
