Do any insurance companies allow owner to set replacement cost value on home? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:52 PM PDT Is it ever possible for the homeowner to set the replacement cost value of the home? I currently have two homes and I don't at all agree with the replacement cost my insurance company keeps computing on both houses. These are high value homes but I feel they are trying to over insure me. My premiums for all insurance (2 homes, 3 cars, and 3M umbrella) for the next year will be $19,500. This is all from one company. My first home is in a high brush fire area, but within 5 miles to the nearest fire station. The house has a central station fire alarm and indoor sprinklers. The replacement cost should be no more than 1.5 million. The insurance company computes it at 2.05 million. They told me 2M last year and I fought it. They sent out an appraiser and reduced it to 1.8M. I told the appraiser that came out that my neighbors brand new home was purchased for 1.8M and it's similar size and same quality. He gave me a BS line about how the purchase price of a home is not relevant to the replacement cost. I get that for a resold home, but not a new build spec house. Builders don't build new homes to sell at a loss(house was even sold before it was finished). This year with my renewal it's back up over 2M. Second home is old (60s) but big. Most of it is original and is very out dated. I'm going to be renovating it starting in probably 6 months or so. If it was to burn down tonight I would never rebuild it as big as it is today. It's in a city, has a hydrant in the front yard and you can almost see the fire station from the house. Initially I told insurance that I wanted it insured for 2M (purchase price), but later tried to say 1M (the land is really the value of the property at this point, which is 1.6-1.8M). They did it at 2M and then sent out an appraiser who increased it to 3M for rebuild and 1.5M for contents. The home is completely empty. There are no contents but they require content coverage to be a percentage of replacement. This home alone is now 9k a year for the premium. So do any companies allow the owner to set the max payout on a policy? I don't care if the rebuild costs would be more as I would simply not allow the rebuild cost to be more (if necessary by reducing size, features, etc.). I'm having a hard time finding a new carrier because of the high fire risk on the first house. I'm also not happy with my broker and probably need to find a new one. [link] [comments] |
[CA]Gave my cousin the keys to the car he goes out and gets drunk and crashes my car. Who's liable? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:08 AM PDT I gave my cousin the keys to my car and he goes out and gets drunk and crashes it. What he crashed into we're not sure, but it was most likely a parked car. He was then arrested and charged with a DUI. In this situation who's liable? Is it me since it was my car and it goes through my insurance or since he went and got drunk without my knowledge does it go through his? He said he would pay for all damages to my car so does my insurance even need to get involved? If so what exactly should I tell my insurance? If he did hit a parked car no one has contacted me asking for my insurance info. I have comprehensive and collision coverage through State Farm and he has the basic progressive sr22. Geico Reversed my "At-Fault" to "Not-at-Fault" but Consumer Reports Still Say I Was At Fault Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:17 PM PDT Excuse me if it's unintelligible. I rushing right now. I got in car accident in 2017 and Geico initially said I was at-fault for the accident. Long story short, I just had the tires installed two days prior and I had a blowout that exited the sidewall indicating the tire was defective or a hitman didn't finish the job. I worked my way up the chain at Walmart (who sold me the tires) and then I was told to contact Simple Tire. Walmart gives me some manger's personal number; he writes a check and assumes liability ( yes, I have the paperwork). Geico then changes the at-fault to not at-fault once I provide the paperwork. As of today, Geico still has me not at-fault but every time I do a quote online (for any company), these different companies keep telling me I'm at fault or I have to do go through a waiting period before I can get a proper quote. How do I go about getting the at-fault removed? It's always online from some consumer report that apparently doesn't get updated. This has been on-going for 2 and half years but it's really an issue now since I just moved to Florida and need new insurance soon. Insurance went from around 130 to a quoted 346, only going as low as 250-ish. Edit: Spelling [link] [comments] |

Being sued for broker malpractice because client's spouse died during underwriting Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:10 PM PDT 2 years ago my colleague sold a life insurance policy to a client and her husband and I was listed as one of the agents to split the commission. Unfortunately, her husband died days later while the application was still in underwriting. Further, there was a typo with a social security number and no initial premium payment was made on behalf of the insured, which is a requirement expressly stated in the application signed by the client for retroactive coverage to be in effect. An incomplete application (due to the typo) and the lack of initial premium payment are listed as reasons the claim wasn't paid out. However, even if there had not been a typo, the lack of initial premium would have been sufficient cause to deny the claim. My involvement with the application is very limited. I emailed the application to the carrier and filled in missing information that the primary agent left blank such as dates, phone numbers, and socials. However, I may be responsible for the typo. I never met the client or his wife (the plaintiff), never signed the application, and never told the plaintiff that she or her husband were covered. My questions are: How liable am I for this? Does it matter that I never met the insured or the plaintiff? Is it illegal to have filled in the miscellaneous information? [link] [comments] |
Any reason to not go through a body injury claim? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 11:00 PM PDT Earlier this year, I was rear ended and suffered from neck pain and numbness in the limbs for about a month. I had a body injury claim opened against the other driver's auto insurance. I saw a couple specialists and got PT treatments. After a month of treatments I believe I am recovered. All the medical bills were paid by my health insurance except for the co-pays (all together was like ~$250) I believe in most cases people will go through the body injury claim to get reimbursement. Not sure if I am thinking too much but I was just wondering if there is drawback of doing that. For example, will that claim affect how/what my health insurance covers my neck pain in the future as they might since it's related to the car accident? Thanks for your input. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:09 PM PDT My car was hit while parked on the street. No note was left, so I filed it as a hit and run. My question is will it go on my insurance "record" and should it effect my rates? [link] [comments] |
Can I be on two insurance claims in two different states? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:00 PM PDT My dad co-signed on my truck I bought new last year, so I've maintained my registration and insurance under their address and AAA policy in CA while I've moved to CO, since (surprisingly) both my premium and registration are cheaper. If I buy a relatively cheap/used motorcycle, can I open my own insurance policy ONLY for the motorcycle, and keep my truck on the CA policy? Is there any risk to either company learning I live in a different state than my primary policy and cancelling my coverage or otherwise affecting my or my parents policy? [link] [comments] |

Should I avoid coordination of benefits? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:45 AM PDT My son was born 5+ months ago. We added him to my Wife's insurance plan. I am on a different insurance plan through my employer. He spent some time in the NICU so we easily hit our out of pocket max. Now five months later my wife is getting calls from a 3rd party company on behalf of her insurance. They are asking her what my insurance info is. They say my insurance may have covered some of the costs and it can save us money. This sounds like bullshit to me. In what scenario could cooperating with them actually save us money? Our son was never on my insurance. Let's pretend some weird rule had him covered (birthday rule?), wouldn't this result in us owing more money? BEcause then we would also need to hit the out of pocket max for my insurance? I want my wife to block this company's calls. Will that screw me over later? [link] [comments] |
At-fault driver hasn't made claim to his insurance Posted: 28 Aug 2019 06:30 PM PDT I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit to post this to. Please redirect me if I was wrong. My boyfriend was involved in a chain reaction accident two days ago. A 17 year old kid ran into them when they were all stopped for someone turning. All 4 cars involved were totaled. We called his insurance an hour after we got home and gave them our information. They told us that he has to admit that we were stopped for them to give us anything. We called them the next day (yesterday) to see if anything has happened and the woman he talked to said they accepted liability and set up a time for him to pick up his rental car. Half an hour before he was supposed to get it another agent calls him saying that the driver hasn't even called them back yet and doesn't know why she said that. He called them back today and they said he still hasn't contacted them. My question is, what do we do now? We can't make out work schedules work with one car so we really need the rental. Do I just fork out our deductible so our insurance deals with it? We don't have the money to do that right now so would I just take out a loan? The person he spoke to today said that it's illegal for them to not contact their insurance about this. Is that correct? Any and all advice would be helpful. We're pretty young and have never had to do anything like this so we are lost. [link] [comments] |
Neighbor tree about to fall on my house Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:27 PM PDT So there's a medium sized tree, about the height of my house, on my neighbors yard. Storm damage from a while back weakened the root system or something of the tree and it has leaned into our yard ever since. We mentioned this to the tenants but they were new and said the property manager promised to take care of it "once we get a little income built up" It has now been over a year and the tree is leaning even more, to the point of almost touching my house, and is barely being held up by the neighbors fence. I understand that a sudden fallen tree caused by weather isn't his liability, as there was no reasonable expectation that the tree could fall and therefore no negligence on the property managers part, but if this tree ends up falling and hitting my house, who would be held liable? I've mentioned it to him as has the tenant. He promised to call the owner and get authorization to cut it down but it's going on a week now without any activity on that front. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:24 PM PDT I was wondering if anyone knew anyone that had started their own MGA/MGU and what the process is? I know it's definitely a very loaded question as is any inquiry on starting a business but I was mainly curious how they get underwriting data etc. Additionally how you get from underwriting knowledge to marketing yourself to agencies/brokers [link] [comments] |
Can someone please help me. I have some questions about vehicle insurance. Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:16 PM PDT Specifically, I was wondering how do you know what you'll be paying each month for your insurance after the premium? Let me set this up for you, My husband and I have never actually had to deal with vehicle insurance all by ourselves and are a bit confused. He wants to use progressive, we went online and got a quote that says we can get on for $54 dollars and then we have to pay $105 dollars for 5 months to pay off the premium which is $583. My questions are, what happens after the 5 months? How do we know what we will be paying each month? Is the premium what we will be paying each month? After we pay the $58 to get on does that mean we have insurance? Or do we have to wait until we pay off the premium? Any and all help will be appreciated. Like I said , we're new to this, so if I sound incredibly stupid then ya know why lol. [link] [comments] |
New Hampshire Renter's Insurance (post-fire) Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:08 PM PDT Hi all, Currently at college in New Hampshire living out of an off-campus apartment. We use a pay-for laundry system (not at all addressed or mentioned in lease) in a public room on each floor. My first time using the units, the drier caught on fire at some point during the cycle, where I found my clothes actively burning - the fire department put out the fire with no injuries or apartment damage. Prior to operation, no lint was in the collector, and there was not any form of lockout/tagout or "out of order" marking. With the arrival of the fire department, they verified that I did not overload the machine, and they could not locate a definitive cause of the fire. Upon doing some research, I found an online maintenance record put in 2 months ago, stating that the tumbler was not rotating - the blower was effectively heating the clothes to the point of combustion. My landlord is refusing to provide any type of service receipt to prove that any and all issues were addressed and/or resolved. He is also claiming no responsibility for the incident, and is refusing reimbursement. I've estimated the damages to $400. In the fire department report, they've included the maintenance request and the fact that I was denied service receipts. My current renter's insurance plan has a deductible of $500, regardless of who's at fault or negligence, etc. Any input regarding what I could do to benefit my case here? I would prefer not to take this to a claims court for this amount of money, but I do think I have a case for negligence on the apartment's behalf. TLDR: My clothes caught on fire at my apartment in New Hampshire likely because of an ignored maintenance request. My landlord is refusing any form of reimbursement. Please provide some insight into NH renter's laws. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:56 PM PDT I could use some help you dont mind. We had a total loss on a car. My insurance company is estimating significantly lower (by about $5k) than most listings on multiple websites (CarGuru, autotrader, etc). They are saying it's based on the condition of the car- other than fixing leather upholstery, the car was in great condition. I sent her all of the listings in the area. Any thoughts on how to argue this? Do I need an attorney? Is there some kind of arbitration? [link] [comments] |
[WA car accident] Should I pay my medical bills out of pocket, before insurance? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:47 PM PDT Hi guys! I was rear ended in WA, and they other party's insurance accepted liability. However it was a 4 car accident, so the person is responsible for 3 cars and passengers. I am guessing the person only has WA state minimum coverage. (for bodily injury, $25k per person, $50k per accident) This happened 4 months ago; I went to the ER on that day, and they sent me a ~$4k bill. I also have been going to a chiropractor every week. Today my chiropractor told me they have been sending the bills to the at fault insurance, but they haven't paid them anything, saying they need to wait for all the bills are done to settle and pay. So my chiro is asking me to pay out of pocket and ask for reimbursement. Here is my concern: is it possible that if I pay for the ER bill & chiro bill myself, I could get screwed and not get paid in full by the at fault insurance? I also don't know how long the chiro will take. I don't have PIP so my own car insurance is not willing to deal with this. My health insurance is also saying its a car accident, so they won't help me. What should I do with those bills? any advise appreciated! Thank you!! A [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:29 PM PDT I'm 24 with a clean driving record and about 6 years driving experience. I drive a 2008 single cab Silverado v8. My insurance rate is about $130 a month . I have full coverage and get towing services too if I need it. Is that too much? I also have the same company for motorcycle insurance , but they only charge me $58 for my motorcycle. I'd figure the motorcycle would be more expensive. [link] [comments] |
[IL] Prenatal Visits Not Being Covered Fairly By Health Insurance Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:22 PM PDT Hi there, Not sure if anyone may have any advice on this situation, but here goes.. I'm currently (almost) 34 weeks pregnant. For the first half of my pregnancy, I was insured by insurer #1. I quickly realized that my pregnancy benefits were horrible, so I switched over to my husband's insurer #2. As I've since learned, most maternity care is coded as some type of "global billing" since they bill you for everything all together after you've delivered. Since I changed insurers halfway through my pregnancy, my maternity care is now considered "non-global billing" or split billing. Essentially, my OB's office has to code things a bit differently for both insurers. Here's where it gets frustrating.. Under normal circumstances, insurer #1 would cover prenatal/office visits at 100% (with the exception of the first one which would also have a $15 copay). Since they've had to use different coding, however, my prenatal/office visits (for insurer #1) are now being grouped together and coded as "antepartum care, 4-7 visits". Due to this change in coding, this claim is now subject to both my original deductible and coinsurance. This practice seems extremely unethical to me since they're still the same prenatal/office visits, regardless of how they're coded. Do I have any recourse in this situation aside from filing an appeal with insurer #1? Will an appeal even be worth the effort? I'd really appreciate any advice or insight anyone could offer. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
USPS Truck hit my parked car - Help :( Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:19 PM PDT So the USPS truck that delivers our mail grazed my front bumper while my car was parked out front. He didn't leave a note or anything to notify me of it happening. I have no video evidence that it was him nor did I see it happen but the marks left on my bumper are rubber. USPS mail trucks in Texas have rubber push guards on the front and back of them. I can almost guarantee if I was to park next to a USPS truck the guard would line up with the marks on my bumper. Does anyone know what I should do? [link] [comments] |
Counseling - BCBSIL - Out of Network? Posted: 28 Aug 2019 12:35 PM PDT I have BCBSIL & looked into if my counseling had been billed through yet - I've gone 3 times, and have paid full price with my HSA card ($130) I check today and it's only taken off $18 (under "discounts") and nothing more. This is scary because I've finally found someone who I've made real progress with, but I only have enough left on my HSA for about 1-2 more sessions. I assume this means she's out of network? Is there anything I can do to fight it?? [link] [comments] |
Temporary insurance possible? (CA) Posted: 28 Aug 2019 11:45 AM PDT Hello all I have a vehicle that is a lemon. I have hired an attorney and I'm supposed to be finishing up the process this coming week. They need the registration to the vehicle though. In order for me to pay my registration I need insurance but I don't want to get a 6 month term insurance policy for a vehicle I will only be keeping for a week at most and that won't even see any miles from me in the future as the vehicle will be forfeited and will be delivered via flatbed tow truck. Any ideas with what I can do? [link] [comments] |
