Competitor has typo in their social media bio linked to an available domain

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 10:59 PM PDT

I was perusing my competitor's Instagram and of course their bio says "check out our website at the link below!!". The link has a typo in it that's 1 letter off of their website...and the typo domain is available. I think buying the domain ($11) would be funny but I'm not sure of anything productive to do with it. Any bright ideas or just let it slide?

Where to sell an online, almost fully-automated business for less than 100k?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 03:30 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

So I started a book printing business almost two years that I'd now like to sell to be able to use the funds in a new venture. The business is certainly growing and here are some quick stats:

    • literally less than an hour per week of work

    • nearly everything about the business is automated: outreach, client interaction, etc

    • 89k revenue and 26k profit

    • I made a full Business Presentation PDF to explain the business, processes, automation, and of course financials, hopefully to help in the sale of the business

    • I never really marketed the business, so there's definitely room for significant growth if someone wants to actually take on a real marketing strategy

    • never actually touch the product (goes directly from 3rd party in China to the client anywhere in the world)

    • already seeing repeat customers

So I think those are most of the important aspects of the business. So with all of that in mind, where best would I go to sell something like this?

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

Options other than QuickBooks for $15 or less

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 07:12 PM PDT

I am in Canada and am fairly happy with quickbooks easy start. I do 100k in CC payments, sent estimates, all billing and it's easy enough to use and looks professional enough.

I am a little unhappy with the $14 to $20/month sudden price increase. I don't mind when a service goes up 3-5% but when it's almost a 50% jump I feel like I'm being taken advantage of because I rely on the service.

Does anybody know of any other good systems that can take CC and do invoicing, estimates and track receipts?

Wondering what others who use quickbooks think of the increases? Is there any way to get a deal out of them? They are getting $1000 in CC fees already and said they will never go lower than 2.5% plus $.25 per transaction

Edit: more like $3,000 in CC fees...

    EcoRidePH is finally happening (ecoride.ph)

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 03:15 AM PDT

First, this isn't an ad since there's hardly anyone on reddit from the Philippines... second, I don't know where else to post this. this is a xpost from /r/electricscooters just because... I just need to get this out. I'll try to keep is short. This is a very very long story otherwise.

    Shortened version:

Thought I'd retire to the Philippines after selling my US company (tech firm, nothing to do with scooters). I was 40 and I got bored quickly. I didn't have enough to retire in the US but I knew I wanted a different life so I'm gonna try this place out... anyway, was sitting there first week of Jan, saw an EKS go by, wanted to get in to it. I liked businesses that solve problems and this one solved a lot... commute times, traffic, congestion, pollution. It was all there.

So, where to start? Shit... I started my company in the US 20 years ago. Do I even remember HOW to start a company? On top of that, how do I start it in another country? Time to hire lawyers, accountants, experts to show me how it works here...

Well, not yet... let's get a product first...

So I bought two EKS. One for me, one for the gf... different brands so we can compare. Learn. "figure out"... spent three months online finding out who sells the most here (Xiaomi) and where they screw up. (hint: it's a lot of places). I made my data points... where do people complain? The same model is sold everywhere so there's a LOT of data to go through. This is good. We're figuring it out.

Nine... nine data points that we needed to adjust... so I started adjusting those. Testing, checking, asking mechanical engineer friends in the US to review for me. Was I on the right track? Would this work better than what Xiaomi had? The entire time trying to use as many interchangeable parts as possible to keep the customer's cost of repair down. Afterall, my target was the commuter... the commuter who's using 1-2 months of salary on a better way to live their life. They're trying me to make something they can repair themselves, keep costs down, reliable, dependable. You can make more money with hobby types and big scooters but you can make a better life with the commuter. "easy to fix, hard to break" that was the design mantra... keep it simple. At least on this model :)

Now... design is basically finished, first design anyway, so now where do we go... China... I didn't have a visa so off to Hong Kong I went. Applied on Monday, mid March, approved by Thursday. Headed to Shenzhen Friday. Emailed nearly 100 places, got responses from 60, narrowed those down to 13.

13 meetings in three days... in a place I had never been to. luckily my cell carrier (Google Fi) is allowed outside the Great Firewall so I was able to use google maps to get around...

every meeting starting with an email "bring the engineer"... see, with no IP law in China, everyone has a Xiaomi clone... which means every one had the nine problems I didn't like...

one meeting I walked out of because the engineer wasn't there... "he's sick, so sorry"... "sorry, that was a clear requirement" and left. nothing personal, it's simply a requirement... one I can't deviate from... see, engineers are a good litmus test for the sales people. Engineers get uncomfortable when sales people "stretch the truth"... the engineer had to be there.

Every other meeting started the same " you made this xiaomi clone here?" "yes sir, I design" "here's nine things I don't like about it"...

walked out of five more meetings... see, we have a long term plan to modify and change our scooter as we find areas that need refinement. we keep track of repairs in our database and we're constantly making improvements... if you're defensive about the things I don't like about your design today, we're going to fight tomorrow... not worth trying to move forward together. flexibility is a requirement. being unemotional about your product is a requirement... five more meetings done quickly.

Got to the second to last meeting. Worried... not having good luck. The ones who wanted to work with me on design were not sophisticated enough to do what I wanted... the larger ones were too entrenched in their design to be flexible. Maybe I was asking too much... starting to lose hope.

Second to last meeting. Tired... started the same, maybe more obtrusively... "nine things I don't like about your design" "oh, we didn't make a clone, I fixed things... here's what I fixed in my design"... he's an engineer, sales man and president... he started this place three years ago. He was an engineer at his previous company, went to start his own thing. My kind of guy... I took two of his ideas, he took four of mine... eleven... eleven things are now fixed on the EcoRide2. At least the first production run anyway... the second run had an extra four things and the 3rd will have nearly 30.

We launched in Manila July 4... now we're in Cebu meeting with retailers. In this time I've had to fix five issues with the first production run (shipping problems, etc), had a competitor that was paying one of my retailers for information on my movements (who literally copies everything I do... it's like having an annoying little brother haha), some governmental problems getting my corporation set up and a few other things but you know what? we're here, we're making a lot of progress, we're helping people change their lives (2 hours a day of their life back out of traffic and putting 15% of their monthly income back in their pockets)... I wouldn't trade it. All of this and I get to work with this hot chick who's head of sales and is willing to publicly admit she loves me... not a bad gig.

I don't know why I'm posting this. I think I wanted to get it out there. Maybe as inspiration to someone else, maybe to offer to help you if you need help (I did do business mentoring back in the US some and a few guys here on Reddit before)... maybe it's to tell you to stop worry and just take it one bite at a time. It gets overwhelming but just keep plugging... I don't know man. I just wanted to write this.

    Funding a new business

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 09:57 AM PDT

My side gig / hobby has grown more rapidly than anticipated so I recently formed an LLC and registered with my State.

I have around $10000 in assets and a small amount of cash that I will need to invest to get things going. I know I can create a loan for the cash, but what is the best way to change ownership of the physical products? It's mostly the product I sell and display fixtures.

    LLC vs S-Corp?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 04:03 AM PDT

So I have a few questions on how I should incorporate.

I have 3 revenue stream. My YouTube channel, Amazon and other affiliates/sponsors and break/fix PC work. I probably net between 3-10k/year right now as it's just side work.

Which would make the most sense since the income is not super consistent? Which offers the ideal level of protection? Also which is easiest to secure a small loan of 5-10k? Our annual household income is 115k if that helps.

I also need to have the company buy things from me personally to shift the debt away from me for things that I use 100% for business.

    Thanks everyone!

Everything is dictated by company vision?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 01:40 AM PDT

For example Zappo's is about customer intimacy, and their staff has an intimate type of communal workplace. Everything internally is designed for the employees to excel at intimacy. The vision dictates everything else.

Should everything align to vision? Including brand image, products, employees.

    Recommendations For Office Phone System

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 02:51 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right sub, but this is what I'm looking for:

A business desk phone system that will ring people or groups by extension during business hours (M-F 8-5), and any other time, forward calls to the same people and groups to their cell phone numbers. Is there a VoIP system that offers this all in one, or would it be better to just get a normal phone system and then connect with something like Grasshopper for the forwarding? Open to any and all ideas on how to accomplish this.

Options other than GoToMyPC for remote access?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 04:00 AM PDT

We have 4 seats of GoToMyPC to remotely log into computers. It's great but a few months back they doubled their price so I think we are paying around $40/month/user. What is an equivalent service that is less costly? Just need remote access so when I log in I see an exact duplicate of my computer. Must work on Windows and IOS. Thanks!

    Microsoft Teams/Slack/Discord/Telegram/Signal what else?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 03:52 AM PDT

I'm working with a 9 people team and we're looking for something better than Microsoft Teams. Right now this is the best tool I know because it's free and we can create group calls - this is main advantage of this platform. But in other hand searching for a specific text in channels or integration with other services to manage pools or meetings is impossible. Scrolling in chat history is like back to 1999.
I tried Slack which is to expensive for us, Discord - I read somewhere that is not safe, Telegram/Signal - doesn't support group calls.
I'm really pissed off because of Microsoft Teams so I will consider any of your proposal.
    Thanks in advance.

Do I need accounting software? What can I gain from it? Home based eCommerce business

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 04:23 PM PDT

Overview:Small business owners with zero formal education in business. At the point where our business is growing and we are realizing our limitations when understanding what money is where. We feel like we need a better handle on the financial side of our business.

All customers pay for goods upfront by purchasing on the site. In the rare occasion we need to generate and invoice we do it through our shopping cart (Big Commerce).

For year end taxes I tag everything in Mint and run reports on my categories. We have no employees (it's just 2 of us. married) so no payroll to deal with.

We rely very basic merchandising reports from our eCommerce platform (big commerce)

Things that we were wondering if accounting software could help with:

Cash flow is kind of a pain in the ass. Once a week to look at every credit card bill and payments due to suppliers to project how much money we'll have on a certain day to see who can get paid and when. I assume most accounting software can make this task easier.

Inventory forecasting. If something looks like it will be out of stock sooner than it usually is we'd love to know before it's too late.

Profit and Loss reports: For our overall business and on a per product basis.

Is there accounting software than can pull data from our shopping cart (big commerce) so we don't have to enter in data automatically?

Our profit margins are rather low so we can't spring for anything too expensive. But curious to know what is out there.

WE DON'T KNOW WHAT WE DON"T KNOW. So if there is there is something that seems so obvious that we failed to mention a small business owner might need please point it out. Thanks!

Does your 2nd business credit card affect your personal credit history?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 10:48 AM PDT

I got my first business credit card earlier this year, which shows up as an inquiry on my personal credit record and has been affecting my personal credit score, which is totally understandable since I had zero business credit history.

But At what point does your business credit activity stop affecting your personal credit? If I were to apply for a 2nd business card now, will it still show up as an inquiry on my personal? I'd greatly appreciate any insight, thank you!

    Digital marketer looking for clients

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 07:55 PM PDT

    Hi,

I completed my MBA and successfully launched various marketing campaigns during my program. I have a friend who has worked with a few digital marketing firms and we want to start our own digital marketing company.

We plan to focus on small/medium business owners, businesses that have 1 - 25 employees at most.

We need to build a portfolio of clients (3 - 5 clients total from various industries) so we are looking to offer FREE digital marketing service to on board these first few customers. If you are a business owner who is interested in increasing their leads by advertising on Google then please let me know. In return, I'll add your business to our portfolio.

Our aim is to work with businesses from different industries so we'll let you know if we already have someone from your industry! Thanks
