    Torn about quitting public

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:43 PM PDT

So I've been in public accounting (audit) for three years now, at a mid-size firm. Was recently promoted to senior. Really enjoy working with most of my coworkers. But I've felt a real decline in my physical/mental well being. Started anxiety meds after my first busy season because I started having panic attacks. I'm sick of the travel, working 12 hour days, having PTO but not being able to use it because of the workload, and generally feeling like work is totally taking over my life. I'm also afraid that I'll leave here only to find myself in a similarly stressful industry job. Any advice from those who quit public?

PwC no longer taking Valuations interns for any US locations this year.

A lot of us applied to Valuations internships they put up on August 8th. A lot of us are now getting calls from the campus recruiters telling us we're going to have to reapply.

    Any idea what's going on?

    Help Me Decide

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:03 PM PDT

Thanks in advance for the help everyone.

Current senior who was early promoted at big 4 who burned out hard this past busy season. Found an offer at a national firm in a growing group, who wants a senior to help them build it out.

I went to put my two week notice in after being sure I wanted this new job, and everyone reacted strongly trying to get me to stay. I have partners countering me saying we can work on the balance, get you to sign off earlier in busy season, but I'm not sure who to believe.

Change is scary, and I can't help but doubt my first decision. Can these things really change and let me still be highly rated? Thanks!

What To Do To Get To 150 Credits?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 08:24 PM PDT

As the title suggests, I am having trouble deciding how I want to get to 150 credits. I will graduate this fall with 123 credits and a Bachelor's in Accounting from a large state university in the Midwest. The reason I am graduating from this school with just my bachelor's is because I plan on living in the Charlotte, NC area and want to do my Masters in Accounting at a large state university a few hours away from Charlotte starting in Summer 2020. While I'd really like to go to this school as my best friend goes there, I'm not sure that getting a Master's in Accounting from this large state university is the most prudent financial decision.

I was doing some reading around earlier today and many people were saying that firms don't care much how you got to 150 credits as long as the CPA exams have been passed and that the only big advantage to going to the large state universities is if they have firms recruiting directly from them. Some people suggested taking community college courses (or other lower priced classes) for the cheaper cost. As someone with an internship lined up (details below), is getting the MAcc worth it at all or should I just take cheaper courses to get to 150 credits.

Some additional information, I do have an internship in assurance with a Big 4 firm this coming spring in the nearest sizable city to the midwestern university I will graduate from this fall. I figured at the very least I'd have that internship on my resume if I cannot get an office transfer to Charlotte. I also will be purchasing CPA study materials here in the next month or two and plan to start taking the exams immediately once I graduate (NC only requires 120 credits to sit) and ideally I would have the exams done by the end of summer 2020 (a total of 8 months, at least 2 of which I would have no other time commitments. At the school I originally planned on going to, the cost of tuition alone would be ~30,000 for a year (I would get housing and meals outside the university).

TLDR; MAcc at large state university, is it really worth it compared to cheaper community college classes to get to 150 credits?

    Crowe or EY?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 06:50 PM PDT

Have offers from both and am conflicted . This would be for nyc office . Been working with smaller nonprofits at current firm and some commercial . Crowe would hav mix of larger nonprofits and larger commercial companies while EY would be in real estate group.

Any thoughts on work life balance at each firm at the nyc office? How would you rate availability of exit opportunities for each of one wanted to go to industry ?

    HOA's Are Stupid

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:01 AM PDT

Hopefully some of you fine folk can can tell me why I'm wrong here. I've recently been appointed to the HOA's finance committee, and when I saw the financials for last month a couple things jumped out at me right away.

They've got accounts on the income statement for reserve contributions. Apparently, they're transferring money from operating to reserve and calling that an expense. When I said they're erroneously reducing their net income, they said this is how it's done in the HOA world. I'm just thinking that logically, if I have a business - I could just transfer all of my net income to a savings account and never show income. Seems crazy to me.

They also paid $13K for a project last month, and that transaction did not show up on the income statement, and they have no capital items on the balance sheet. When I asked about that, they said that it came from the reserve account so it won't show up - which I suppose they probably did transfer that 13K to the reserve account which would have been on the income statement at some point in the past - per the above. But what if they transferred 15K? Now they're under-reporting $2K of net income, right?

Does this make sense to you guys? I've got a reasonable amount of experience in the for-profit property accounting world, but this just seems like a huge departure from what seems legal and ethical to me. But alas - I know very little about non-profit HOA accounting.

Why are people who work at KPMG so rude?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:13 PM PDT

Not to stereotype or anything, but every recruiter or employee I've come across has acted so poorly. Not everyone is flat out rude per se, but they still give off a vibe that what they are doing is superior to any other type of work. They always worship over the brand wearing more company appeal than a diehard sports fan would wear to their favorite team's game.

Just the other day, one person who worked there over the summer was telling another person about how if you don't go into big4 accounting then you've wasted time getting an accounting degree. I also only see this with people at KPMG, never PWC/ey/Deloitte, so what is the up with this?

Anyone else notice or experience this?

How long did it take you after graduating college to start suffering from lifestyle-creep?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:59 PM PDT

Last year I spent $21k including $3k on a class. I started working full-time in January after graduating from undergrad in Dec and we're only 9 months in and just calculated my personal p&l and I've already spent $19k, about to drop $3k on grad school putting me over last year's expenses.

Where did my money go?? I thought it would never happen to me...
