First real world job as an Accounting Assistant...and it's boring as hell.

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 03:02 PM PDT

Is this the same case for everyone who works in an office setting? it's so mundane and repetitive. It doesn't help that my boss is a micro manger from hell. I'm having an existential crisis at work basically. I don't want to be on my ass for 8 hrs looking at a monitor. Dopamine runs through my body every time I leave work for lunch...I feel free/ let out of my cage if you will. How does everyone else feel about office jobs? is it fun , boring or you just put up with it cause you have to ??

Has anyone done a Business Analytics certification?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 05:55 PM PDT

A bit of background: I recently graduated this past Spring with my undergrad in Accounting and have a big 4 job lined up for NEXT September (i interned here and this is my return offer). In the meantime, I'll be taking classes for the CPA eligibility and will be eligible to seat for the exam in January.

I was applying to online analytic programs because at my school, i didnt really have an opportunity to do any courses analytics/data related. They have the course available in my masters program, but I decided not to do my masters because i already reached my 150 needed for the CPA (just need the upper-level accounting courses), and didn't want to fork out 30k for something I could do for 3k and one semester at a local junior college. I actually got accepted into Harvard Business School's Online Business Analytics program. Is it worth doing and does having it specifically from here carry more weight? It's more expensive than pretty much everywhere else, but I'd love to get more knowledge on Data and Analytics in general.

    Comparing bosses...

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 07:39 PM PDT

So far so good. I like my new boss (very small PA firm). - She's smart, - organized, - approachable, - patient, - and humble.

I'm glad to be working for her!

In stark contrast, my old boss was a jerk (also a very small PA firm). - He acted smart, but made a ton of mistakes that he blamed me for, - was completely unapproachable and openly made it known he would delete all emails and text messages from his staff, - was horribly disorganized to the point that following his PY work was a nightmare and completely useless, - very impatient, especially when training, - quick to blame others, but slow to apologize, or even change his mind when he realized he was wrong.

    I'm glad that's over!

    Questions about accounting

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 09:34 PM PDT

Hello I'm a financial accounting major in college. I just kind of picked a random major and went with it haha and now I'm a junior. I was just wondering if u guys could help me get insight on what your jobs as accountants are like. I have no clue what I'm in for if or when I make it into the accounting field. Also as an accountant do you need to have amazing verbal skills and be amazing at giving presentations and such. I'm asking bc i feel as if that is my worst possible quality.

Are people that are extremely sociable and have good work experience tend to be good interviewees also?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 05:19 PM PDT

After I got a bit of experience and became more sociable, I started to find interviewing a lot easier. Just from having some work experience, I was able to wing a lot of interview questions with varying success.

People that are sociable and have decent work experience don't have to try as hard to prepare for accounting internship interviews compared to people that are a bit shy and have no experience?

    Government Accountants

Any government accountants? Local, state or federal? What do you do?

Currently a local grants accountant. Trying to explore different career paths. I always thought I would be in public accounting (I love people) but firms in my area are scarce.

Do you deal with major regret?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 09:04 AM PDT

I am an adult student, about to graduate with a degree in Accounting. This is my last semester.

I'm feeling a lot of regret about my major. I will finish my degree, but I feel kind of dumb for spending all of this money to get a job I don't really like all that much. I'm already employed as an Accountant.

The classes are boring. I always feel MORE energetic after getting out of a psychology class, or an acting class, or performing...but accounting is draining. Is that how everyone feels about it? I picked accounting because I love spreadsheets and I'm analytical and wanted a degree that gave me a specific path, unlike general business. But I'm just feeling...lost man. I feel like I'm graduating with 20K in student loans and I'm getting a degree I didn't enjoy getting. Which is fine, there's no changing that now, but....like what the fuck?

I don't know, I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else feels this way.

My senior hates me and idk why

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:18 PM PDT

Just rolled onto a new client and my Senior who I never met before seems to hate me. She ignores me basically the entire day, except checking on me like 1-2 times (a forced "how's it going" at 4:30pm today after silence all day). When we do interact, she is cold, and straight up rude/sarcastic. Very bitchy, Mean Girls attitude towards me and idk why. Maybe someone badmouthed me to her or something, but i dont understand why. I am very quiet/introverted and barely talk to anyone so I didn't cause any drama.

Normally it wouldn't bother me much, but we are understaffed (just the two of us), with the manager occasionally checking in. I am worried because we both have way more responsibilities in this engagement and I definitely will need help and I don't want to screw this up.

Anyone here not get recruited before graduation? How did you find a job afterwards.

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:29 PM PDT

I hear it's next to impossible to get a job if you weren't recruited during college based on the posts here.

I started my MBA program today

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 05:27 PM PDT

So I got my bachelor's degree in accounting in 2016 and today I started my MBA program with a concentration in accounting. This way I reach the 150 hours to sit for the CPA exam and have a higher degree. Since I'm planning to sit for the CPA, would a masters in accounting be a better route? Hope someone can give me some insight. I asked my manager at work, and she said an MBA is better than a masters in accounting because it gives you more exposure to marketing, management, etc. Any help is appreciated.
