Things Don't Fall Apart: The Surprising Resiliency of the Global Trade Regime

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 08:13 PM PDT

On June 29th 2019, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, while at the Osaka 2019 G20 summit, agreed to a truce in the trade war between the two economic superpowers. The US has placed 25% tariffs on $250 billion , and banned the export of American technology to Chinese telecommunications manufacturer Huawei. Although old tariffs have not been removed, the US and China have agreed not further escalate the trade war, and Huawei has been granted the right to import US technology so long as it does not contradiction American national security needs. Although previous trade truces have been broken, global financial markets rallied , as it appears the US and China are walking away from the precipice.

Trump's trade war led many to fear that we are heading back to the days of Smoot-Hawley. However, other nations have reacted by opening up their markets rather than applying tit-for-tat tariffs. Although leaving the TPP was one Donald Trumps core planks in his 2016 campaign, the other signatories created a new Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership without the US. The African Continental Free Trade Area came into effect on May 30th 2019, creating a framework turning Africa into a single free trade zone. A new trade agreement with Japan came into effect in February of 2019, creating the largest open economic area in the world, The EU has negotiated new trade agreements with Vietnam and Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) although these agreements have yet to be approved by their countries legislatures. China is trying to lead the creation a major free trade zone of its own in South and Southeast Asia called the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

These new trade agreements mark a major liberalization of global trade. For example, the EU-Mercosur trade deal, if ratified, will allow Latin American countries to export 99,000 tons of beef, and 180,000 tons of sugar and poultry. The CPTPP will allow Vietnam to export leather footwear to Japan and Canada tariff free. There are major barriers to these recent efforts reaching their full potential. For example, Nigeria has refused to join the AfCTA, because the government fears it will undermine its policies of subsidizing local businessmen. Similarly, India and China are butting heads on RCEP, as Indian businessmen fear being overwhelmed by Chinese imports. Moreover, the Trump administration continues to weaken global trade institutions by hobbling the WTO's ability to arbitrate disputes by appointing the reappointment of judges. As real as these difficulties are, the global rules based trading system has proved resilient to adverse political conditions. Although there are storm clouds and the horizon, there are just as many silver linings.

    Marketing is an afterthought

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 02:19 AM PDT

Speaking to startups, a common thread I have noticed.

Marketing is an afterthought, a not-so-important factor in the business's success, something easy, requires little to no expertise, can be done by anyone, doesn't need a lot of time, work or money.

I have worked in sales, business development, operations, product development (besides marketing), and this is what I have to say.

All the business functions need love, they work together. But let's talk marketing.

Your goal is revenue and you can't reach your goal if your market doesn't know about this crazy awesome solution you have.

If nobody knows you exist, you don't.

Marketing tells your market about your crazy solution,

    and that's worth enough.

    Don't you think?

Mompreneur: The Ultimate Guide To Starting An Online Business As A Mom

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 03:50 AM PDT

Anyone know of any current (ongoing) events where certain leadership or management actions are helping a business or team solve a problem?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 04:37 PM PDT

I am taking an online summer class on leadership/management and I have to create a presentation on any current event that relates to our class topics, i.e. team building, delegating team roles and tasks, self-assessment, personality types, etc.

Are there any situations or news articles that anyone can point me to? "Current" only means "ongoing" so it could be a few years old. Zuckerberg's challenges with Congress and Wells Fargo's recent stumbles were listed as examples so I cannot do those.

    Thanks!

How to Get More Done in Less Time?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 08:44 AM PDT

One big question I hear over and over is 'how on earth do I find time for marketing and selling?' The challenge of running your own business is that typically you are not only the sales manager; you're also the person delivering the service to your clients.

This is something I can strongly relate to, as I struggled with it myself when I first set up my corporate training business back in 2003.

What made the biggest difference for me was replacing one-to-one sales and marketing activities with one-to-many activities.

One-to-one sales and marketing techniques are just not effective for the small business owner. You can't possibly reach all the people you need to reach, establish their needs, propose a solution, close the sale, deliver the goods and follow up effectively if you are doing it on a one-to-one basis. Trust me, that's a very fast route to burn out.

When things really started changing for me in my business was when I dropped one-to-one marketing and selling and I turned it into one-to-many marketing and selling. What this meant was that I was making offers simultaneously to large groups of people, to both attract them as prospects and then to convert them into paying customers. Without cold calling. Without time consuming face-to-face meetings.

So let me give you some examples of some one-to-one activities that you may already be doing, and show you how you can transform them into one-to-many techniques.

Going to a networking meeting where you meet one person at a time, talk to them and exchange business cards is a one-to-one technique. However, if you arrange to be the speaker at that meeting and provide practical, solution oriented content along with a clear next step and call to action at the end of your talk, you've just turned it into a one-to-many technique.

Cold calling is definitely a one-to-one prospecting technique. There are a finite number of people that you can cold call over a period of a week. Send a well crafted direct mail piece, however, and you have replaced it with a one-to-many technique.

When I started my business, I couldn't afford to hire a sales team, and I just didn't have time to prospect by phone, have the face-to-face meeting AND deliver the training (highly ironic considering my specialty was cold calling) so I started using direct mail to promote my training courses.

Suddenly, instead of me having to try 6-8 times to reach the MD of a company, his secretary was calling ME to request a meeting. (This technique isn't for the faint-hearted though, and you need a cracking foundation in direct mail and copywriting techniques before you plunge in.)

Free introductory consultations is a one-to-one technique, but you can turn it into a one-to-many technique by hosting a teleconference that still enables you to connect with people, but in a group setting. I know of one coach who has built a multi six-figure business and he credits this one technique for his success.

Calling on a customer with a box of doughnuts is a one-to-one relationship technique. There are only so many customers you can see, (and only so many doughnuts you can eat!) A newsletter is a one-to-many relationship building tool.

For example, it takes me the same hour to write a newsletter each week whether 100 people, 1,000 people or 10,000 people read it. And I don't have to eat a single doughnut! You do the same amount of work but your results keep increasing. And that's what gives you the edge over people who are stuck using one-to-one techniques.

The main advantage of replacing one-to-one techniques with one-to-many techniques is that you get a better return on your investment of time, because in that hour you're potentially reaching hundreds of thousands of potential prospects rather than just the one. So you need to replace your one-to-one techniques with one-to-many techniques.

If you want to grow your business exponentially and you want to be in a position where your calendar is full and you've got people knocking on the door for your services, switching from one-to-one techniques to one-to-many techniques is crucial.

Put this principle into action now! Write down all the things that you currently do to promote your business. Determine whether they are one-to-one or one-to-many techniques. Then brainstorm some creative ways that you can turn those one-to-one techniques into one-to-many techniques.
