RaaS - Roasting as a Service

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 05:49 AM PDT

When people give you feedback they don't want to hurt your feelings. Would you pay $5 to get real feedback? https://feedbacktoaster.com/ Roasting as a Service makes sure someone tells you why your product/startup/website is trash. Because dreaming is too easy :)

Edit: Want to earn some $ on the side by roasting products? Write me at roasterfeedback at outlook.com and become part of the roasting team!

Edit 2: For a different version that is focused on constructive feedback (instead of roastings) check out https://hive.userinject.com/ And if you are only interested in getting publicly listed this is the place for you too :)

I want to create an app/game that motivates people to take care of themselves via a virtual pet

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 05:49 AM PDT

[Thanks for all the support guys! I really appreciate it. 💙] Where's better to get feedback than here? A good community with some successful entrepeneurs? Here I go, then:

This idea is inspired by a Jordan Peterson quote. "Take care of yourself as if you're taking care of someone else."

I wanted to embody that with an app/game that helps people to build habits, schedule and DO important things, and to upgrade their life. Now, the audience is, admittedly, people like me: creatives who want to a lot of good, know the techniques but yet get sidetracked easily, and maybe don't have a lot of confidence. I empathize with them and I want this app, not just for them but for me as well.

Now to the mechanics are somewhat like this other app called Habitica. It's very game like with a HP system and level up ability, but there's a problem I have with Habitica. For more analytical and competetive people who get satisfaction from these type of games, there's no problem. I enjoy a good grind with my games on occasion.

When it comes to my life, though, and doing the hard things, I just don't care about the character enough to keep them alive. They're just some pixel thing to me.

But most people love their animals so much that they would get ran over by a car for them. No joke. I would. I sound nuts, but it's true.

So a customizable pet! That you take care of with good habits and doing your to-do lists. You start out with one habit and level up as time goes on, adding more and more.

But with consequence. If you go more than 3 days without taking care of this pet, they will die. It's not some nintendo pet care game. You don't come back and wash them up and feed them a bit and they're fine despite the week you neglected them.

There would be a heart wrenching death scene and a funeral. I want this to be as unexpected as possible so that way the player takes this seriously.

That's a basic overview of my idea.

Best thing is, perhaps 30% of the proceeds that this app potentially could generate (with ad revenue and more) is going to some animal charities, like Hope For Paws or Seaturtles and places like St. Jude. Probably need to focus on one at a time though, haha.

Now I'm only 17 and have no knowledge of UIX, app-building, or even how to market this, but I do love to animate and design things! It'd be awesome to team up with a dev and to make this come true--maybe with a kick starter, a patroen or something like that?

And I'm also doing Fiverr, which is going okay so far. Another is this art Amino adoptables thing where all the money is going straight to Hope for Paws. Also storyboarding for this animation I want to post of YouTube, no money involved.

I feel as if I'm never doing enough, and if you like my ideas, could I have a few pieces of advice? Youth is an advantage, and I don't want to be caught in the machine with a dead end job. Thank you if you've read this far, and have a fantastic day, entrepenuers. :)

How to promote niche podcast/content when there are rules against self-promotion everywhere?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 11:37 AM PDT

I'm working on a podcast and other content for a niche... and every FB group, Reddit group, discussion forum in that niche area (or just generally!) has rules against self-promotion.

Doesn't matter if you offer valuable, quality content for free -- if it's on your website, it's still considered self-promotion.

Understandable, I guess. But ridiculously frustrating!

But how the heck are you supposed to promote yourself as a small startup working in a niche area?

Do you have to spend a bunch of money on ads -- is that the only way now? Or what's the best way?

    Any tips?

How to specify target Airpod consumers using Facebook ads?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:47 AM PDT

I am looking for any ideas that might help me specifically target Airpod consumers using Facebook ads.

I ask because they do not yet have a behavioral option for Airpod consumers, and but I am curious if anyone has an idea of any combinations that may work in its stead.

Right now one of my key funnels when narrowing my audience is obviously Apple users, but I would like to ensure I am targeting Airpod owners specifically as my product useless do those who do not own Airpods.

I hope this makes sense. I am just starting out and trying to learn :)

I agree with some of the recent posts about too much self-promotion.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 12:46 PM PDT

I've been following this sub for quite a while and will have to agree with some of the recent posts stating there is a lot of self-promotion going on.

There are 3 or 4 users posting 4 times a week about literally the same stuff over and over. They claim they aren't doing any self-promotion, but it's clear they are steering users to their website/blog/product based on everything on their profile linking to it. I wouldn't even be surprised if some of these users had a side gig offering "x" amount of Reddit traffic to someone's product or blog for $100 a pop (Pat from starter story).

You guys are being sold the dream to guys who are playing you for their own benefit.

People of r/Entrepreneur ask yourself this. Does a true/successful entrepreneur have time to create all these posts? Someone who was successful in multiple businesses sure as hell is not taking the time to write "free" content and business strategies for a forum lol.

Sometimes the posts DO have some value, but repeating the exact same story as a landscaper, power l-washer, taco stand, or god knows what gets really fucking old when it's the same repeated content (which all sounds good in theory, by the way).

This sub is better than this. I'm open to any discussion, but I'm a nobody so you are wasting your chars.

My first sideproject on ProductHut. Feeling excited about it

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:01 AM PDT

Hi guys. My first side project, RetargetKit has been launched on ProductHunt. Hope to get at least a handsome amount of upvotes.

Retargetkit is a link retargeting service by which one can retarget visitors even his/her content hosted on 3rd party website (like as Medium). By link retargeting you can serve specific ads on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook & Google who clicked on your retargeted link.

Take a look at it and do let me know your suggestion.

Don't forget to share. Your little help, will help me a lot.

Trademarking when previous usage of the name has occurred?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:56 AM PDT

We're selling products that have been decent in sales and hoping to grow. I was interested in trademarking our name (still officially unregistered) but have found a very small website that existed before us selling a single unrelated product. Now from what I understand this website would have the common-law on their side since they existed earlier than us. Would there be any value to trademarking at this point without being first to use the name?

Visualize word of mouth and sentiments to find movies, TV shows, games and podcasts

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 01:51 PM PDT

Here's my idea. A platform where one can get a live view or pulse of what people are watching/playing and commenting on and aggregating how they feel about it.

We would use the recent social media posts and perform AI-based sentiment analysis to determine if the social media chatter is positive or negative and also associate the chatter with emotions (i.e. was the game boring? was the movie thought-provoking?)

We would then present to users a platform that shows the following:

    • live view of what's the world watching and commenting on - the user feels like they are plugging into a visualized "word of mouth"
    • a score out of 100 (like Rotten Tomatoes) that quantifies the sentiment for this piece of content
    • content is sorted by emotions instead of traditional genres. So instead of picking an Action movie, the users can see what are some "adrenaline-pumping" movies that are also "funny". We can do this as we have detailed sentiment analysis on each piece of content
    • gives people the flexibility to think beyond just film and tv - we will show games and podcasts that fit the sentiment as well
    • allows user to pick what they want to watch next based on the data above

Monetization idea: unclear - but working on it!

Key question: Is this something you would use to find the next movie / tv show / game you'd want to invest your time in?

We built a print-on-demand platform for the Mexican market. Review our landing page?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 01:38 PM PDT

As the title suggests, I built this platform on rails with a partner and we're looking for critique on our landing page. We are both amateur programmers (my background is in finance) and we are trying to capitalize on the Mexican market. There aren't many competitors doing this here at scale, and we are somewhat insulated from international competition due to shipping costs (and times) being so high! This gives us a unique opportunity to grow the local market. Our intention is to ship to the US and Canada soon, as we will likely have a slightly better COGS structure than our US/Canadian counterparts. That said, we would truly appreciate any landing page or general website critique. Thanks!

Bing cut a deal with Google for Google My Business local listings?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 01:33 PM PDT

Just logged in to Bing and it had me verify by business my linking up my "Google my Business" listing and offered to import all of my data directly from Google.

Found this fascinating as in the past they were always direct competitors. Now my profiles are mirrored.

    Not complaining. Just interesting

Fast-growing SaaS startup - looking to hire our 2nd engineer and 4th team member

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:21 AM PDT

Our fast-growing SaaS startup is seeking to hire our 4th team member and A+ player. Ideally a full-stack/python dev who has an appetite for risk and being on the ground floor of a SaaS startup with big aspirations. A little bit about us:

    • Went from $0 to $200,000 in ARR SaaS subscriptions from Feb 15th 2019 to today
    • $500k+ in the sales pipeline
    • Raised 300k on a 3.5M valuation to date
    • Founder sold previous company
    • Hard-working team that respects work-life balance, but is very driven and strict when it comes to performance, goals, and our appetite for success
    • Looking for an A-player. What does that mean? A dynamic engineer with good communication skills, an ability to learn/adapt fast, can switch gears on the fly to take care of the most urgent deliverables. Willing to get hands dirty but can settle into a management role as time goes on. A person we can consider a founding team member.
    • Offering 100K+ in Salary/Equity
    • Boston (HQ), NYC, or Remote

Where are the best places I can post this to find someone? If this sounds like you, please comment or PM to connect/learn more about the company and connect.

    Finding your Market and Brand

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 12:12 PM PDT

For most of my projects, I tend to attack them like this:

    (1) I have this interesting idea, (2) then I start to build it, (3) I'm sure there is an MVP in all this, (4) oh yea, investors require market research; let's find some numbers and draw a hockey stick chart.

After the third or fourth project, I started to realize I might be going about things a little backward. This week I decided to reverse the order and start researching markets first. From there I can objectively decide what projects could be valuable, and figure out if there is a business solution I can offer.

My research started with Buzzsumo. Buzzsumo provides a search engine for finding out how news and blog articles are shared in the various social media outlets. This might be a weird place to start because Buzzsumo doesn't usually point to web media that sells a product directly. However, it's 2019, and we have entered the age where features don't sell products. Instead, stories sell products.

Companies like Apple and Tesla use "news" to create a brand narrative. This article (https://www.canva.com/learn/build-brand-narrative/) suggests that Apple's narrative is "connecting the world and communicating in new and interesting ways." According to this article (https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-strategic-narrative-drives-successes/), Tesla's narrative is "ground breaking technology that will save the world." Both of these companies start with an altruistic message, but there is an additional layer of branding that is "be part of the sexy brand social club."

Being an engineer it feels almost perverse to suggest this, but I think it's more important to find a compelling story than it is to solve a real-world problem. I'm not saying the problem is unimportant, rather the story is MORE important. In the last hackathon I went to, the winner did not have the most interesting technology nor did he solve the biggest problem. However, he had a narrative about how his father had a rare blood disease that they discovered while traveling to a third world country. For his pitch, he created an app that used a cutting edge technology to help people that could get caught in a similar situation. Now the technology was cool! It was geofencing around hospitals to find people of a certain blood type. Notice the order in which I explained the product though. The story comes first.

My market research journey continued from Buzzsumo to some marketplaces that actually sell products. At first, I thought of researching Google Play and the App Store. Honestly, they both seemed a little daunting as a market to test enter. They both require specific phone technology, and knowing the ropes of who to talk to in order to get your product featured. I will definitely jump into these markets more in the future, but at least this week, I am doing more of a survey.

The next markets that I looked into included Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Looking at the "featured products" of both of these crowdfunding marketplaces revealed what consumers want. I can roughly break it down into three categories for the day I did research: kitchen stuff, gadgets for the home, and niche hobby stuff. The featured products that broke the mold were a comic book on Indiegogo and a Danish watch company on Kickstarter.

It's clear that these marketplaces are great for selling consumer products B2C, but unfortunately, at least for now, I am more interested in emerging software technology than consumer products.

The last marketplace that I performed market research on was a new-ish marketplace that I see a lot on the r/Entrepreneur subreddit called "Product Hunt". This website features a new web tools almost everyday, and supposedly can generate a lot of traffic very quickly. In the Product Hunt "featured apps" section, I found a few apps that I could definitely re-create, and then I did some research on how to launch a product on Product Hunt.

Now I had performed some market research on a few markets and thought I could develop a clone of some of these products. I started to jump into a new product idea, but while doing the leg work I realized that I was missing a "brand narrative" and all of the stuff that I talked about earlier in this article. This seems to be a little bit of a chicken and egg problem, so I went back to researching other podcasts and blog articles on this subject.

I found a podcast by Tim Ferriss. Tim Ferriss is most famous for his novel "The 4-hour Work Week", but he also has been an advisor to a slew of famous companies. He has a simple strategy when it comes to "brand." Here is a link: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/tim-ferriss-show/the-tim-ferriss-show/e/51741145

    (1) Forget about personal branding, put Good Business first (2) Own or create a category for 1000 diehard fans (product and market) (3) Don't make a product for everyone; if you can go for the high-end market

So after doing my market research, I found a few products that I could make, but they didn't fit easily into a brand that I want to cultivate, and I didn't know if I could be the "BEST". Over the past few weeks, I have done a few exercises in "divergent and convergent thinking" as a way of finding a brand and value proposition for Clearcut IP. As I continue to work on these thought exercises, I believe my brand and value proposition (at least right now) has developed into making products and writing articles that help people with side projects to understand the tech world.

Right now I am competing with likes of "Tim Ferriss" and "Naval Ravikant", but they are so high level that they talk in broad concepts, rather than the nuts and bolts of building in an emerging tech space and getting it to market. If I can create products that hit people that are interested in this low level knowledge, then I think I can win my "1000 fanatics."

I hope this was interesting to a core group of you. Feel free to tweet or share bits of this article you find interesting.

You can read this article with pictures at: https://www.clearcutip.com/2019/06/26/finding-your-market-and-brand/

    Are ideas needed?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 04:05 AM PDT

I keep getting ideas for new projects, companies, businesses and products. But I never get beyond the first mockup before my mind gets overtaken by the next (big) idea. Are there any takers/need for handing over already-scoped concepts to students, teams or entrepreneurs looking for something to work on? Like a pre-packaged bundle with ideas, concepts, a few business contacts, market calculations and initial prototype calculations... ?

Follow-up question: How do you know when an idea is THE idea that you should toil over?

    Better ways to receive money?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:56 AM PDT

This is not a pitch or anything. I'm genuinely curious about the ways to receive money in the beginning as a startup.

I'm just testing out the product right now before the business takes off so I don't have an EIN number to open an business account. I was thinking about using paypal and have the customer send the money to my paypal as a "friend" to try and lower the fees that paypal takes.

Is that an option? Or are there better payment and money receiving methods?

Starting An Internet Cafe - Big Opportunity

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 05:14 AM PDT

I've decided to start an internet cafe, there's a massive opportunity for these types of businesses. I'm currently in London and there are only a handful of internet cafes around the centre of the city. There's a massive gap that needs filling and huge potential to make $$$

MARKETING Like most local businesses, exiting cafes haven't caught on to the digital market revolution so the best way to draw customers will be through Google Ads and Facebook Ads. Also plan to hand out flyers to hostels, hotels, and student areas ahead of summer.

PROFITABILITY I have a business plan and hope to expand to 4 European cities by the end of 2021 and be making $350,000 gross profit per year

Looking to see if anyone else has started one of these businesses to bounce ideas off. Cheers
