    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Jun 13, 2019

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 01:07 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

How does the company value become the market cap in an IPO?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 10:39 AM PDT

The company uses the IPO to raise capital. When i take Alibaba as an example , they raised 21,8 billion dollars and the market cap in the beginning was around 167 billion. So what is the math behind this difference. The cap is 8 times the amount of the raised capital. Superficially this sounds for me like if im a huge investor and payed for a 5% stake of that 21,8 billion valuation, i payed a little bit above 1 billion. That 5% becomes over 8 billion of the market cap around the time the IPO is finished though. This cant be right or that easy to make 700% plus on my original investment after a few months. How does that work?

For better understanding i copied two texts as an example. One for Alibaba and one for Uber.

Alibaba Group Holding (BABA.N) priced its initial public offering at $68 a share, the top end of the expected range, raising $21.8 billion on Thursday, in the latest sign of strong investor appetite for the Chinese e-commerce juggernaut.

At that price, the IPO, one of the largest-ever, would give Alibaba a market valuation of $167.6 billion. Alibaba is selling 320 million shares, equivalent to about 13 percent of the company's capital. Nearly two thirds of those shares are being sold by existing shareholders including Ma, who will reap $867 million.

Uber Technologies Inc. UBER-9.03% priced its initial public offering at $45 a share Thursday afternoon, and will bring in at least $8.1 billion in the biggest IPO in years. The ride-hailing company announced that it intends to sell 180 million shares at that price, which is toward the lower end of its stated range of $44 to $50. Underwriters, led by Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and BofA Merrill Lynch, have access to another 27 million shares to cover overallotments. At the IPO price, Uber would have an initial valuation topping $75 billion. Shares are expected to begin trading Friday morning on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol UBER.

The filing of Form S-1 is the next logical step of our plan to become a transparent fully reporting SEC Issuer filing timely reports with the SEC.

    DNR Fail

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 06:43 AM PDT

As a new investor, I made the mistake of thinking I was invincible after making some money off TSLA, then invested a good bit of my portfolio in DNR (Denbury Resources). Long story short, I bought high, and now the stock is worth like a fifth of what I invested. I figured I should play long, but at this point the stock keeps finding new lows it seems. Should I just sell and take whatever cash I have left or should I keep playing the long game?

    Thanks for the input!

NFLX: Netflix says 'Stranger Things' mobile video game is coming in 2020

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 04:54 AM PDT

    https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/12/media/netflix-stranger-things-video-game/index.html

The company is working with Finnish developer Next Games on a free-to-play mobile game that will take place in the shadowy Upside Down world featured in the series.

"We are huge fans of 'Stranger Things and thrilled to work together with Netflix to bring our shared vision of Stranger Things into life in a mobile game format," Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen said in a statement.

Netflix made the announcement on Wednesday at the E3 gaming conference in Los Angeles.

"Stranger Things 3: The Game" will be a "location-based puzzle [role-playing game]" and it's scheduled for release in 2020 on iOS and Android platforms.

"Stranger Things" isn't the only Netflix show to get the video game treatment. "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics" will be coming to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Playstation 4 later this year. That game is based on the Netflix Original series, "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance."

This is a very interesting move for Netflix. Entering the gaming industry can bring extra revenue outside subscriptions to the platform. NFLX is part of my portfolio, I trust the company to keep innovating, not just in new content, but new concepts.

The Boeing 737 Max grounding: No end in sight

    Posted: 12 Jun 2019 02:07 PM PDT

    https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/11/business/boeing-737-grounding/index.html

Boeing insists it is making progress on getting its fix for the troubled jet approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration, which it needs to put the Max back in the air. But the company has stopped giving any public estimates about when that approval might come.

The fatal crash of an Ethiopian Airlines plane that prompted the grounding happened three months ago this week. At the time, Boeing extended condolences to the family members of the victims and said it expected a fix "in the coming weeks." That software fix is designed to address the plane's automatic safety feature, which is the focus of the investigation into the Ethiopian Airlines crash and another crash involving a Max flown by Lion Air in Indonesia last year.

Those weeks came and went. After the FAA said in early April that additional work would be needed, Boeing again suggested it would be only a short delay and said the fix would be "completed in the coming weeks."

Months later, it's clear the initial time frame proved far too optimistic.

Asked Tuesday for the latest estimate for a return to service for the 737 Max, neither Boeing nor the FAA could give a time frame.

Boeing said it is now providing additional information to address FAA requests that include detail on how pilots interact with the airplane controls and displays in different flight scenarios. Once that process is complete, it will work with the FAA to schedule a certification test flight and complete certification paperwork.

What's more, even after the FAA does approve a fix, Boeing will face the challenge of getting approval from more than 30 other airline regulators around the world. Those international regulators will have to be convinced that both Boeing and the FAA got it right this time.

"The technical fix is relatively simple compared to the political difficulties," said Richard Aboulafia, aerospace analyst with The Teal Group. "The need and difficulty is to get everyone on same page, and to assure international regulators."

Airlines that have the 737 Max in their fleet now aren't expecting the planes back until August at the earliest. On Sunday American Airlines (AAL) canceled flights on its schedule through Labor Day. United (UAL) and Southwest Airlines (LUV) have canceled flights through early August.
