Hit a deer while out of state on vacation, will my insurance let me drive rental car back home if repairs can’t finish before I return to work?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 02:35 AM PDT

As the title states I'm visiting my boyfriend and I'm out of state, and I'm in Minnesota until the end of the 4th of July weekend. I live in Ohio which is a 12 hour drive. I did not want to just wait until I got back home to file a claim in case there was damage to my front wheel or damage that made the car unsafe to drive, because 12 hours is a long way to drive and a good way to mess up my car.

A deer ran out in front of me so I filed a collision claim. I took it to a repair shop and they are now telling me I might not get my car back before its time for me to go back to Ohio.

I had rental car reimbursement and do have a rental vehicle while I am here, but I'm wondering what happens if my car is still being repaired when I need to drive back to Ohio for work?

I have called my work and they are as understanding as they can be about the situation but I can't really afford to miss work and sit around in a different state while my car gets fixed.

Car insurance question regarding non driver turning into driver automatically on policy

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 12:50 PM PDT

Currently, we have a full auto policy where both me and my wife are listed on the insurance because we are both registered owners (we are both on the loan) but she was listed as a non driver and me as the driver. I have no driving accidents and my rate is as low as 70 a month. However I notified them that she obtained her learners permit and was inquiring about how much it would be to add her as a driver. However the rep told me that she is automatically added as a driver because of her permit status and she couldn't be a non driver while having her permit/license. However he said the rates would not increase because she is not a fully licensed driver, and she just has her permits. This is a bit confusing. However the rates would double once she obtains her license.

Now my question is, am I under any obligation to report after she completes her license test? Or do insurance companies have anyway to check once she becomes a licensed driver?

Impact of an excess insurance claim on premiums

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 01:41 AM PDT

I'm currently on vacation and had a small scrape with a wall in my rental car. I've taken out third party excess coverage with another provider.

My understanding is that I will first be charged by the rental company for the damage excess and then I would need to make a claim on the third party excess policy to get the money back.

For regular personal car insurance (non-rental), would the premiums on that policy increase because of the claim on the excess insurance policy?

D&O Insurance in an asset sale covering personal liability?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 01:23 AM PDT

    Hey folks,

I'd really appreciate any thoughts and input on the following.

    Scenario

    • Company A is a US C-Corp, Company B is a US LLC.
    • Company A is in the process of selling their all their assets in an asset sale to Company B.
    • Company A currently does not have a D&O policy.
    • APA [asset purchase agreement] requires Director A of Company A to sign as a personal guarantor for warranties in the APA, meaning they could be held directly liable for any perceived breach of contract.
    • After the asset sale, Company A will be ceasing operations (eg, all assets are included in the sale)

    Questions

    • Could a D&O policy be a suitable way to mitigate risk for Director A?
    • Would most D&O policies cover the above scenario, or is this highly dependant on policy specifics?

Really appreciate any input on this. Will obviously get legal advice also but any input from /r/insurance would be great.

    Best,

    Jamie

Why are Texas auto deductibles odd numbers?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 10:33 AM PDT

I have a friend who recently purchased a vehicle in San Antonio, and his lienholder said he needed a $500 deductible. For whatever reason, Texas doesn't have a $500 option, only $499. In fact, ALL of the Texas numbers were odd numbers, even the liability numbers. Is there any particular reason behind this?

My house was broken into, but...

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:00 PM PDT

... the only thing that was stolen was some tools the handyman was using to fix it up so I can sell it. I haven't lived there for about two months. I know it's a bad idea to leave a house empty but I was hoping since Tim (handyman) was there and my mom was stopping by one or twice a week to check progress, it wouldn't be obvious it was empty.

My question is - will my State Farm homeowner's policy cover Tim's tools that were stolen? I'll file the police report tomorrow.

Should I be signing a release for medical records to the At Fault's insurance?

    Car Insurance for Military

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 12:16 PM PDT

I bought a car in the state of Texas and my policy has the zip code of 78234 which is JBSA Fort Sam. My policy ends this July and i'm wondering if my insurance and zip code has to reflect the state i'm currently stationed in. Or is it fine renewing it in Texas, I was told military can use the state of car registration but i'm here to verify.

My son will be living with me temporarily for a couple of months. Do I need to add him to my car insurance?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 03:54 PM PDT

One of my sons will be living with me for 2 months until he finds a new place after his divorce. I will also be traveling out of the country for a month of that. He will be driving my car while I am out of town. Of note, he has had 2 DUIs in the past and does not currently have his own car or car insurance.

    1. Do I need to add him to my insurance policy? I have coverage from State Farm.

    2. He won't be driving my car much while I am home, but I am afraid that if he gets into an accident while I am traveling, that my insurer might not cover my policy or simply cancel my policy altogether.

    3. I am also worried that if I tell my agent, they will say with his record that he is not allowed to drive my car at all or that they will raise my rates just because he is temporarily living with me.

What should I do here regarding the above (3) questions?

Is there anything else that I should keep in mind that I have not asked about?

In case it matters, I live in Arizona.

Taking the life, accident, health exam

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:49 PM PDT

Ello, I'm taking the the life, accident and health exam here in Texas on July 3. I'm super nervous because I'm Really terrible at taking test. Texas requires that I need to make at least a 70 to pass. I know that probably sounds like an easy thing to do but I'm deadly worried about failing. Need to for the new job and before today I've never even heard of this test before. Any advice I can receive about this test or ways to study for it would truly be helpful. They gave me an online link to go study at but it's so many terms that I have to remember. I've noticed that they will word them differently on the little end of chapter quiz. Is the test completely memorization of all the terms?

Insurance off the roof for a 2019 Ninja 650

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:03 PM PDT

I had a 2018 Ninja 400 KRT that I bought this feb. It got stolen mid April. I used to pay 800ish$ per year for insurance through GEICO for full coverage. I was offered around 5k$ by GEICO which I am yet to settle. Now I am looking to get a Ninja 650 and asked for quotes from the insurance. Here are the quotes I recieved.

    2018 Ninja 400 -800ish$

    2018 Ninja 650 -The same 800ish$

    2018 Ninja Z650 -The same 800ish$

    2019 Ninja 400 -1000ish$

    2019 Ninja 650 -The same 2800ish$

    2019 Ninja Z650 -The same 2800ish$

I called around the dealerships and no one had any 2018 motorcycles in stock. Is there anyway to bring down the insurance?

Other Info: I tried progressive for same rates. I live in San Jose, CA.

    Thanks in advance.

Can I request check a from insurance and not fix my car?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 12:14 PM PDT

My vehicle was recently rear bumped, the other driver was given a ticket and I'm now filing a claim with their insurance company. The damage is not serious and I could really use the money. So I'm just wondering if I can request a check from their insurance and not repairing the vehicle instead?

Thank you everyone for yours replies, much appreciated.

Is my doctor committing insurance fraud?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 10:44 AM PDT

Hey everyone, Recently my partner was added to my insurance. They have a physical therapist they go to and have been seeing for years. The PT assured us they took my insurance and all was good. Woohoo.

Fast forward a month, I received an EOB in the mail. It said I "may owe" some huge number (close to a thousand bucks) and that the insurance covered a few hundred. I called my insurance company and they told me this PT is not in network, but they'd do a credential audit to verify.

My partner went back to the PT and was assured that we owed nothing to them. They also said they are in network. I plan on calling them today myself, but they printed a zero balance owed bill and everything. Besides the co-pay, they aren't billing us (allegedly).

So what's going on here? Is this some sort of insurance fraud they are committing? If my insurance company thinks I'm paying them close to a thousand bucks, but I'm not, does that payment go towards my deductible or out of pocket max? Am I wrong for thinking something fishy is going on?

I appreciate any help. I'm pretty pissed to be honest because I have great insurance and there is no need to see seedy doctors, we can easily be covered fully by someone else. My gut is just telling me something is up...

How important are Hand railings on outdoor stairs in the insurance world.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:30 PM PDT

I'm closing on a house soon and everything has been going completely smooth. Until it's time to get the insurance binder ready to go. I have a set of stairs at the front door (4 steps) and a small farmers porch that is about 18" -24" off the ground without any railings. An Arabella agent is telling me that i cannot get insurance anywhere without installing railings. I'm now going to shop around outside of this insurance agency to see if any insurance company will look past the lack of railings on my 4 step stair case and a small 18-24" farmers porch. Any recent homebuyers or real estate agents know what the best insurance agency is to use to avoid installing these railings out of my own pocket? (Seller won't install and would go to next offer ). Thank you

[IL] quit my job and got a new one. Only problem is new job does not offer health benefits

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:11 PM PDT

Never been in this situation. What happens to my coverage with my past employer? Obviously gone right? It's been a week since leaving and jumped straight into a new job which doesn't offer health benefits. I've applied for Medicaid but I need to wait now for a response. This is all so confusing to me and don't know where to go.

    Renter's insurance claim: kitchen countertops

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 11:11 AM PDT

The safety valve of my pressure cooker burst and i could smell something burning, so I quickly took the pressure cooker off the stove and placed it on the countertop. Turns out it was really fucking hot because the countertop has a scorch mark on it now. I need to get the entire countertop replaced (I think it's laminate). Would renter's insurance cover this kind of thing?

    Health care deductible

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 02:38 PM PDT

I just had to get an MRI/angiogram last week. I had no payments toward my deductible before this and payed around $900, with my out of pocket maximum being $1,500. I just discovered today my insurance deductible resets on 7/1 and not in January. I already payed the full cost of the procedure and I have a scheduled surgery next month and don't want to pay an extra $900 out of pocket. Is there anyway I could ask them to refund the money and process a new payment in July to have it meet my new deductible?

Is anyone familiar with the app “Cover”?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 05:58 PM PDT

It's been difficult for me to research this as you can imagine googling "cover insurance" doesn't help much. Anyway, I currently pay 150/month with Progressive and the same policy through cover (the brand they selected wasn't revealed to me, I'm sure I could ask if I went forward through the process over the phone) was around 50/month, which is a great savings.

TLDR, is this app legit? Or are they screwing me over in some way I wouldn't know.

Went in for a physical and getting charged as a visit

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 02:11 PM PDT

So I went in for an annual physical at a new office. The doctor checked my vital signs. Then he asked me if anything of concern regarding health. I told him about some health concerns, asked for prescription renewal, and talked about my past health history.

I get a bill for $198.62 after insurance is pays it's part. I'm kind of shocked. In the past I've never had to pay, in-addition to insurance, for a physical. I called their billing department and they said if you discussed health issues then it's not a physical visit anymore and it is an office visit. What am I missing here?

Can my domestic partner be denied health/dental/vision coverage if we don't have legal documentation of our partnership?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 06:19 AM PDT

Hi r/insurance, a redditor from r/legaladvice suggested I ask you all for advice about my situation.

We live in the state of PA.

My employer provides me health insurance. We are getting new health insurance options including a buy-up health insurance plan, dental, and vision (both with buy-up options). I am going to be buying-up on a few, but my SO who would qualify as my domestic partner could be added into our plan. We would be paying for all of their insurance pre-tax through my paycheck. My employer has told me that they don't need us to get a domestic partner affidavit and have been told the health insurance provider doesn't need it to include my SO in the plan.

Our concern is that even though we have been told we don't need this affidavit, that my SO could be denied coverage by the insurance company at any point if they feel like it *because we won't have an affidavit*.

We can't get an affidavit in time, and we're not really looking to get one particularly because we haven't had enough time to think of the ramifications of legally becoming domestic partners. It isn't off the table, but we need some mental space to fully talk this over. We've been together for a decade, live together, have checking accounts under both our names, and had (paid off now) a loan under both our names so we do technically qualify.

Final add-on question. If I leave my job and he has insurance with them as my domestic partner, would he be able to buy back into the healthcare marketplace at that point? Does anyone know if that applies as a qualifying event for a domestic partner?

    Thank you!!

TL;DR My SO and I are technically domestic partners but we don't have an affidavit. If my SO joins my employer-provided health insurance without providing the affidavit (which is not requested) can they be denied coverage at any point?

Does anyone have Noblr car insurance? Wondering if there are any cons.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 05:15 PM PDT

I saw an ad for Noblr which is sort of based off of how much you drive. I live with my boss and he drives me to and from work every day. I rarely drive and when I do it's to my moms or for my billiards league and it's 3 miles round trip to each. I used to have a horrible driving record but haven't had a ticket in 6 years and I am paying over $100 for liability with Progressive. Noblr's quote was $41/month or cheaper. Is there any catch?

Car rental damage - advice needed?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 06:19 AM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I rented a car from Avis (using a broker) in Italy, and have slightly damaged one of the rear panels after being side-swiped. There is a visible dent on the rear panel, and also the mirror.

The car is due to be returned this weekend. I paid a 250 euro deposit with my debit card when I rented the car. Moreover, in the contract with Avis, it included a 'Damage Waiver'. In the booking agreement with the broker, there is a damage excess of 1000 euro.

I was wondering what my position of liability is, in addition to what I should do before returning the car, and any action I should take when returning the car.

    Thank you.

Renter's insurance with LLC as additional insured?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:27 AM PDT

I signed a lease for a condo (I am not the owner, just the tenant) and one of the stipulations is that I must obtain "a Tenant's Homeowners, Comprehensive Personal Liability, or a Comprehensive General Liability insurance policy" with a personal liability limit of at least $300,000. That's not a problem, but the lease requires that the landlord be listed as "additional insured as respects the liability portion of the policy" which I've been told means that the landlord must be covered by the policy as well.

The problem is that the landlord is an LLC. From the renter's insurance policies I have quoted out, any additional insured party must be a person that lives with me.

So how do I go about adding an LLC to a renter's insurance policy? Or is there another policy that I should be looking for here? The landlord (well, the landlord's representative) did not have any suggestions here and claims nobody has had a problem before.

Knob & Tube Wiring Insurance issues

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:47 AM PDT

I have a rental home in OR that was built in 1920. I've owned it for ~6 yrs, and have been renting it out for the last 4. When I bought the house, I knew it had knob & tube wiring but didn't know that insurance had an issue with that. I never had trouble getting insurance either.

I started researching knob and tube more and found out it was tough to insure a home with that wiring. I figured insurance never asked, so they must not know. Then I started getting anxious that I wouldn't be covered if an electrical fire happened.

So I made a huge mistake and called my insurance and asked. They informed me that they weren't aware of the K&T and this was disqualified me from getting insurance through them. They sent the policy back to underwriting and told me that they would either non-renew or cancel the policy with 30 days notice.

Commence freak out - I first call an electrician to see if I can get the K&T removed, but every electrician is slammed in Portland. I finally have one coming out to the house next week. But, I have a tenant living in the house with little kids, and to remove the wiring they have to go in the walls. Basically this project should happen with a vacant house.

So I go to plan B - let's just find insurance that covers K&T and I'll get the wiring removed once my current lease runs its course (end of Nov.). I've called ~7 insurance brokers and haven't been able to get a single quote for my house. No one wants to touch K&T. I also have 2 claims over the past 5 years (water dmg caused by a previous tenant, which was subrogated and my insurance got their money back, and a break in). The claims aren't helping the process.

So now I'm stuck in this no-mans-land where I don't know if I'm going to lose my insurance shortly. If I do lose my insurance, I'll be stuck with a tenant in the house for the next 5 months without insurance. If the insurance company decides on non-renewal, that gives me the time to let the lease run out and fix the issue.

But now I'm sitting around anxiously waiting to hear back from my insurance company? Is there anything else I can do!? I have thought about everything - sell the house (impossible w/the tenant and the lack of insurance, who's going to buy a house with this current situation?).

I also can't imagine living day to day with a tenant in the house with no insurance. One accident or fire could destroy me financially.

I'm just really stressed and don't know what to do at this point.
