My girlfriend and I are considering starting a summer business where we clean litter from storefronts, rental properties, etc.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 05:58 PM PDT

My girlfriend and I are very low income and we're having such problems making money in this city where living expenses are so high. Something I've noticed on a lot of my walks and bike rides, however, is that many businesses have a ton of trash outside on their property, stuck in bushes especially. So something I've brought up a few times to my girlfriend is the idea of going to these businesses and offering to beautify their storefronts; maybe we would charge anywhere from $20-50 per property, depending on how trashy it is. Overhead should be low, as our main expenses will be gas, trash bags, and dropping off the trash. My girlfriend and I have done plenty of work like this before (we're both ex-parks department workers) and so I guess my only question is: How does this idea sound? Any suggestions? Want to poke holes in it at all?

    Thanks for any feedback!!

Edit: Thanks y'all for the feedback!! I will read through the comments again tonight with my girlfriend. I really appreciate the encouragement and critical feedback :)

    Opened a Market? Regrets....

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:05 AM PDT

    Hey Guys,

First time poster long time reader.

    for some basic info here

    1600 sqft

    2500 rent( all inclusive)

    first year revenue( 350,000)

Video for in depth day to day operations

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-morkSAPlQ

I am about a year and half in to my business. We are a small market focusing on specialty items ( local produce, local bakery items, cheeses, a variety of other food items.

We have come a long way from our humble beginnings as we only had a few tables with produce to sell. As we gained some revenue we put everything back into our business to buy equipment and more inventory in turn to make more money. I basically have jam packed the place with inventory that I have seen moves at a moderate amount, with my main goal to increase the average sale per customer.

However, I am stuck in a limbo here, with seeing if my place will be an overall success or failure after this amount of time. I guess the fear of failure never really goes away.

My Regrets stem on days like this where business is slow and I know my produce has such a short shelf life that will have more waste than normal. I am left wondering each day it is slow okay what did we do wrong? why is no one here? it was busy last Thursday? I guess such is life things seem much better before you begin the day to day grind and the growing pains seem to constantly grow.

Trying to look at the bigger picture I understand I should be looking at the bigger picture (monthly revenues/ profits).

Just my thoughts for the day, if anyone with a similar experience/background can shed light or advice it would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks for reading!

    Execution - the key ?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 04:09 AM PDT

    Hey guys!

I'm the 9to5 employee now but i have a strong willing to escape this system to start working on my own visions, so i could fulfill my parents and family with happiness and the needed things in life. I have tried to start different kind of businesses, but every time i want to execute i have faced different kind of impediments, and at the end i realize that for starting something i need additional hands to handle everything and to share my opinion with. So i assume i need partner with similar mindset for starting business.

I have tried to start online gaming server with monetization (in process right now) , drop shipping store and worked on developing game app for mobile phones.

Could someone suggest me how i can find same minded people to bring our ideas into reality together ? Or maybe i don't need no one , then maybe someone could suggest something else what would help me to execute better my ideas ?

    Thank you.

    Business for starters help!

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:23 AM PDT

Hi there! I've been meaning to want to start a business mainly by making jewelry. I know how to do metalsmithing and other techniques in regards to it and I am a very creative person. I've been collecting tools to make a studio... I'm also located in NYC.

I already bought a website domain for starters and been thinking as a beginner if it's better to start on Etsy?

What are some steps I can do to make it more effective? Like... if I start on Etsy... should I get a business or resellers permit? LLC? I have no clue how the technicalities of a small business works. Do you have to do trademarks when it comes to design?

Any tips or advice is very very helpful and I would love to learn more! Thank you.

How to get funding to start a pizza joint?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:38 AM PDT

I worked at a small pizza place in NY, learned how to do a lot while there and worked my way up to assistant manager. But I spent time cooking, delivering, making sauce/dough from scratch. And was beginning to learn how to make pizzas before I left (head managers specialty). I think I have a good basis for starting a small pizza joint down here in the south, bringing the real NY pizza to the area. My old boss even told me when I left to call him if I ever want to start something down here. And he may be able to come down and help get things started (help me with managment and learning the money side of things).

But I'm relativley broke, how could I get funding for something like this?

    Questions about Steak'nShake franchising

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:07 AM PDT

Steak and shake is claiming that they will franchise out a resturaunt for a grand total of only 10k, and guarantee that you clear 100k your first year. They claim the only catch is that you have to attend a 6 month training and they permanently keep 50% of your profits. They also require you to have no other business obligations.

Even with those things considered this sounds like a too good to be true situation. Whats the real catch? Is this worth doing?

Commission for Small Business: How much?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 11:01 PM PDT

    Hi,

I will be doing remote work for a small tech business. I have a link where users sign up for a product, and when they finally use the product (could take 2-3 months for them to do so), I get paid.

The company gets about $410 (PROFIT) each time a product is used, and a customer may use a few per year.

The products might not be quick sells, and could likely take effort/creativity on my part to get lots of customers to sign up.

What percentage of that $410 should be mine? I've seen numbers ranging from 5% to 50%.

    Thanks!

How would I structure a partnership?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:31 PM PDT

Hello, I'm wanting to get into the t shirt business, mainly heat transfers, and I got as far as buying a printer, and a cheap Chinese heat press and made a few shirts, but the heat press was not up to par so I got a refund for it and now I realized I have to wait a little bit longer to get a professional more expensive heat press. Now one of my friends who has money has become interested after seeing the potential of such a business. I'm actually waiting for more funds to come in and I planned on buying a heat press as well as a vinyl cutter to make not only shirts but everything else vinyl related.

My friend wants to partner with me but I'm not really sure how to structure it because I know he is going to want to go 50/50 so I'm hesitant. The thing is I have exactly half of the start up money required, and it's my idea/dream, and I will do all of the labor/designing, but my friend can bring in a few customers so I was wondering how do things like this get structured?

I also have several designs that are in demand in my area, and several business owners I know have expressed interest in getting large orders of work shirts made so I know work will not be hard to come by, and this is just the t shirt side. The total start up amount is less than $1000 and we'd go 50-50 on the money, and the most my friend would do is networking or finding customers through his business, and sometimes t shirt ideas. How would you structure a partnership in this circumstance?

I have some money to invest. Wanna buy some crappy company and make it great

Hello good folks at reddit. Can I pick your brain?

I am looking into starting a mini screen printing company so that I can make shirts for people. I am doing this so I can get and EIN and also have a seperate checking account untied to me so I can get a decent loan maybe 10k. At the same time (cus i rly need to get on my shit) I am starting a clothing brand that I want to put under the original company. I was told I can have a DBA under my original company. I dont plan on having any employees for atleast 3-5 years. I just need to get going.

What is the best way to establish legaly?

Should I go LLC or S corp? Im in illinois. Ive done a good amount of research but im stumped.

If my DBA goes under or gets sued, will it effect my LLC or is it completely seperate?

    THANK YOU!

Service Companies Catering to Small Businesses

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 03:18 PM PDT

Hey all, I'd like to build a list of the TYPES of service companies that cater to small and medium sized businesses. Here's a small example of the types of services my own business outsources from others:

    • Bookkeeper
    • Printing and Copying Services
    • Office Supplies
    • SEO Company

If you own a small business, what other types of businesses provide services to you? If you own a B2B service business, what type of business are you in?

Starting a frozen food product business. Any recommendations on retail packaging resources?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 06:03 PM PDT

I have a business where I've been successful selling a frozen food product wholesale to restaurants and have received requests to go retail. I have 3 local markets ready to put my product on their shelf, but need help with my packaging.

I currently use bags I buy directly online from U-Line and slap a label sticker on it. So I have all the information needed to go on the packaging, but would like help with a nice package design and sourcing from a packaging manufacturer that will not have a large minimum order.

Does anyone have any recommendations or resources or success stories that they can share?

Should I buy this small business - No Money

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 06:03 PM PDT

I leveraged debt to buy both of my investment properties. Currently paying off a 30k loan from the second investment property. I have 0 savings and have about 70k in debt (30 student, 30 inv house, 8 car).

I have the opportunity to purchase a Franchise where sales have been stagnant the last 3 years. they are asking 60k currently has 3 absentee owners that have decided to split apart which is why they are selling.

would be taking out a home equity loan on the investment property to purchase.

Sales $340k Asking price 60k - maybe alittle room to negotiate not much profit after taxes is about 30k a year. If i decide to buy would work extended hours allowing me to remove 2 employees. I would have a salary of about 40k(1 of the removed employees ) until the loan is paid off. I believe I can raise sales by doubling marketing budget and different types of sales.

Would you guys do it since it would be all loans? I currently make 60k at my salaried job and would be taking a hit there. The investment properties do net enough to cover that additional home equity loan if necessary.

I am just nervous and want to hear peoples thoughts on having so much debt and jumping all in leaving the salaried job (which i hate).

Offer to Buy-In to My Company, Looking for Advice

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 02:12 PM PDT

So long story short, I just started a temp/staffing agency for a specific industry in my city.

I've worked hard over the last several months to get all necessary licenses, start a website, logo, etc. and I've just launched, and have a couple of temps working already. My company's biggest competition is a large company (let's call it Juggernaut) that has almost a monopoly- they have been around years and everyone in the industry uses them. The manager of Juggernaut, let's call him Jay, has been there for years and works with every company that uses temps through Juggernaut company- he is the face & point-guy for Juggernaut, he knows the industry in-and-out, and all of the hiring managers know him.

He approached me. He is making a ton of money for Juggernaut Company, but he wants ownership so he can grow his own temp/staffing agency and the sell it eventually. He has given his notice at Juggernaut company and has proposed partnering with me for this new company of mine. Though he is very good at his job, things like getting the necessary licenses, doing the taxes, Payroll, etc., he is not familiar with, which is where I come in.

We had a meeting, and he wants 49%, to my 51%. He wouldn't buy-in; this is ok with me, as he's leaving a position with a good salary plus commissions to start over. I have worked with Jay in the past (for several years), as I am a previous hiring manager in the industry and he used to provide Juggernaut temps & staff to me.

He is willing to work on 100% commission with a 70% / 30% commission split of profits (in his favor) until we are making enough money to pay a salary + commissions to each of us. I'm not necessarily opposed to this- the temps at Juggernaut and the industry companies don't sign any sort of non-compete, and nor did Jay (which was foolish of his company, but so it goes). Jay would instantly bring a ton of business to us, and be able to grab a lot of temps from Juggernaut to come and work for us, as well as a large pool of clients.

Jay & I both have the goal of growing and selling the company in 5 years. I want a sustainable business model so when we sell, we can wash our hands of it. Jay is older and looking at retirement within the next 10 years, so what I don't want is a situation where Jay is the face of the business and does everything from finding the temps to working with the industry hiring managers and a potential buyer sees that if he/she buys it and Jay leaves, it would be a lot less valuable as he is basically the heartbeat of the company.

These are just the thoughts in my head, and I suppose I'm just looking for any general advice. I'm younger and this is all new to me (both starting my own business, which I've kind of learned on the fly), and selling/giving a piece of ownership to someone else. Is 70% profit commission too much? Should it be structured in a smarter way? Obviously, Jay would have to sign a non-compete so he doesn't just own half then leave and still own half of my company, though having worked with Jay previously for years, I doubt that would happen (but I will take every necessary precaution).

Thanks for any input, and sorry for the lengthy yarn!

Inventory Liquadation and selling an online business help please

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 05:18 PM PDT

Hi, long time lurker, first-time poster here, sorry in advance. (Crosspost from entrepreneur, I have no idea how to make it happen to be honest)

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur/comments/c6cvv8/inventory_liquadation_and_selling_an_online/

My wife and I came to the USA 5 years ago and founded our company 4 years ago, had a blast living here, and right now we want to return to our homeland and sell our company + inventory together or separately.

We are looking for a liquidator (preferably located in California) to liquidate our remaining inventory. Have you ever worked with a liquidation company, if so what I should be aware of before contacting them? We are located in Los Angeles and we have been in the e-commerce business for four years and focused on selling decanters, decorative throw pillows, giant hug pillows, laptop/handbag bags, travel organizers, desk organizers, keychains, coin bags, bag charms, fashion jewelry, mugs, umbrellas, coasters, ice molds, and more novelty home decor products. In the past four years, we have been successfully selling these products on Amazon, Etsy, eBay and on our website. All the items in our inventory are packed and ready to be shipped immediately.

Can you please give us some recommendations for inventory liquidators that you have worked with before? Or maybe business brokers that you trust. Maybe someone in here interested in buying our inventory or maybe the whole company please send us a message.

    With Respect,

Best software for appliance rental business to charge accounts automatically?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 12:57 PM PDT

Does anyone here rent out products/appliances?

I'm trying to find the best software that has low fees, that I can hook up customers checking account to automatically withdraw money on a set day of the month.

I would prefer to stay away from automatic debit/credit card charging because people can easily cancel those.
