Examples of "deep value" stocks that have gracefully shut down to the benefit of their investors? Posted: 06 Jun 2019 11:48 AM PDT So with GameStop cutting their dividend to "reinvest in themselves," I'm wondering... Wouldn't it be better if they accepted their (eventual) demise and aggressively attempted to return cash to shareholders? For example, immediately sell off all unprofitable stores, run a skeleton crew at the corporate level with minimal investment in marketing or "turnaround" attempts, milk their remaining profitable stores for as long as possible, and continually pay out the cash flow to shareholders. The goal would be that, if they're truly a "value" play, they'd be able to return more cash flow to their investors than their current share price before eventually liquidating the company, once the last stores are no longer profitable. Do companies ever successfully take this "graceful shutdown" approach, with the deep value investors actually making a positive return? What's the point of buying a supposedly cheap company with high cash flow if they're going to plow that cash flow into an ill-fated turnaround attempt? (Obviously, some of the investors may believe in a potential turnaround, but most people who were buying it around here seemed to agree it was doomed and were just buying it for the cheap cash flow). Disclaimer: not a GME shareholder and not at all salty; just confused as to why people are always buying these junk companies if they're not going to at least return their earnings to shareholders. TSLA up 2% pre-market on news that sales reach new highs Posted: 06 Jun 2019 04:48 AM PDT TSLA reached a low of 177 on June 3rd. Current price: $201. Long 17 shares bought @ $206 (still in the negative) " Amid Tesla's incredibly important end-of-the-quarter push, Electrek has obtained exclusive information about the automaker reaching new record "sales numbers" in North America as it offers employees new bonuses in order to deliver all the vehicles by the end of the month." "According to sources on the call, Tesla has already delivered 33,000 vehicles in North America this quarter." "The level of deliveries is already extremely high after the first two months of the quarter, but Tesla is aiming to deliver another 33,000 vehicles in North America in June alone." https://www.google.com/amp/s/electrek.co/2019/06/05/tesla-sales-high-bonuses-leak/amp/ " "More Model 3s were registered in April and May than during all of the first quarter," JMP Securities analysts Joseph Osha and Hilary Cauley wrote in a note to investors. JMP increased its estimate for Model 3 deliveries for 2019." "" JMP also updated its estimates for Tesla second quarter, as well as the year ahead. "It is evident that Tesla's Q2 volume should recover significantly from Q1," Osha and Cauley said."" [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Jun 2019 11:57 AM PDT I currently hold a very small (< 1000 USD) position in Aurora Cannabis. I bought in last October, around the same time marijuana was legalized for recreational use in Canada. I believe similar legislation will be passed in the United States within two decades, likely closer to one decade, and that a select few marijuana companies will turn out to be long-term winners. I bought Aurora for all of the reasons you read about: they are the market leader in production capacity, heavily emphasize global expansion, and have a continued commitment to the high-margin medical market despite recreational legalization in Canada. My concerns with Aurora are similarly common: aggressive expansion financed via share dilution, remarkably high (pun intended) level of popularity/ trade volume, you get the idea. I would love to hear opinions from the community on Aurora. Good, bad, ugly. Let it fly. [link] [comments] |

How to invest with 50/ achieve FIRE Posted: 07 Jun 2019 03:30 AM PDT Hey guys My (21m) mum (50w) recently sold her shares in my family's company, which is why she has a lot of money on her bank account at the moment (7 figures). Basically she can live FIRE now, I really admire her for the toughness during all those years. I got her to invest a significant amount in stocks (MSCI World + EM ETFs) and bonds (Eurpoean bonds), as well as gradually shift from stocks to bonds as she gets older. She is quite conservative with money so she lets me do the investing (with her consent of course). What else should I look out for? How should older people invest? I am very conscious of her limited time on earth and want her to live the rest of her live from the dividends and value gained from her investments! Thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
Anyone else truly think active investing will be more key in growth down the road? Posted: 06 Jun 2019 10:17 PM PDT Won't there be a point in time where growth becomes stagnant because the population becomes stagnant? I understand that indexes replace certain stocks after years as well but won't there be a point where the average return in stocks isn't worth the risk and bonds become more popular? This is just an opinion but I think years down the road people will flock to more single stock picking in undervalued stocks simply looking for a solid return closer to 7-10% again. What do you all think? [link] [comments] |
Share price of Infineon, Cypress Semiconductors’ acquirer. Posted: 06 Jun 2019 09:41 PM PDT After the acquisition of Cypress, Infineon is now the world's largest producer of chips for cars. I'm not an analyst by any means but what gives on their stock price? Cypress is doing well and is expected to rise even more. I would think that in the position that they're in would yield much better results. They bought at a higher-than-normal price for CY but [link] [comments] |

Fairly new to investing and I'm curious about owning funds that invest in REITs, specifically FRESX Posted: 06 Jun 2019 03:28 PM PDT I'm looking at ways to diversify my holdings and one of the pieces constantly recommended is owning REITs. I have an account with Fidelity so I went see what they have to offer and I was struck by FRESX. It appears that over the lifetime of it's fund it has outperformed the S&P 500 by quite a bit. It began in 1986 and aside from a slide in the 90's, it outperformed during the dotcom implosion, slide but outperformed during the mortgage crisis, when over the course of the "lost decade" (2000-2010) actually made money where the S&P did not. Can someone smarter than me tell me why putting my money in this fund verses something like SPY or VFIAX is a bad idea? Looking at the risk factors for FRESX shows a low Sharpe Ratio and a somewhat broad standard deviation, but real estate is not going to go away any time soon, so the long term risk seems to be about the same as the long term risk of the S&P 500 completely imploding to nothing. I want to make it clear that I don't have a ton of experience so please don't come at me like "lawl ur dumb" because I already feel that to be the case. Edit: thanks everyone I see now. I think what I was overlooking is that reits are a single sector and while they are doing well, diversification is always key. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Jun 2019 06:25 AM PDT So I'm looking at eventually grabbing some stock in waste companies as I feel it's an industry that will be consistently strong and reliable in the future. As A buy and hold investor that is valuable to me. So what's Reddit's opinion on the two? From what I've seen WM is larger and more established but Republic has a better growth so far. I curious what investment these companies are doing in recycling as I see that being much more important in future years. They both seem quite extended and over bought at the moment however. Edit: Or WCN aswell, another major player in the industry. [link] [comments] |
