We are a personal safety startup that interviewed at YC last week, AMA! Posted: 01 May 2019 10:04 AM PDT We wanted to share our experience interviewing with Y Combinator and felt like an AMA would be best! Tego is a personal safety app that makes it easier for friends to communicate while meeting up or traveling alone. We launched March 1st in the iOS app store. This was our first time applying to YC. We did not receive an offer for the S19 batch, but we are still committed to keeping people connected and safe! AMA! [link] [comments] |
I made a million dollars at 25, now I'm lost and depressed. Posted: 30 Apr 2019 10:32 PM PDT I first started my journey in entrepreneurship reselling video game licenses. I was pretty good at it. I made about 60k after 15 months. That's a lot money in my country and for a college age guy. Then the gig kind of died because of policy changes. Fast forward another year, the ecommerce business was booming, I got in at the right time. I was around 23, I guess I had a talent for this kind of work. It all came very natural to me. I started making money right away. I started hiring and delegating work. Being one who always try to be different, I kept coming up with new ideas, make it into a formula and then have my employees do all the heavy work, at one point I was making over 30k a month without putting in any real work. Eventually, I stopped coming to the office, my formula was working and money was pouring in. I don't remember what I was doing at the time, probably because I was smoking weed and drinking everyday. I kinda lost touch and became indifferent to money after a while, I wasn't happy I was making money, it became just numbers. I remember how happy I was when I made the first $50 online, but I don't remember feeling anything during those months, even I was making a lot of money. I liked the challenge at first, but ultimately I was in it to make money, growing up all I wanted was to make money, I had it in my head that I wanted to have one million dollars before 30. Then, at 25, I had one million dollars, I remember that morning when I opened up my spread sheet and put in the numbers, my networth, it showed, was one million dollars. I finally did it, I got what I had always wanted. I didn't feel anything, anything at all, it was just a number, I became so used to making a lot of money and not having to worry about money that the goal in my mind had become meaningless without me realizing it. I remember feeling a little bit confused as to why I didn't feel anything at the time, but being one who always ignore feelings, I brushed it off, rolled and joint and turned on Netflix. Then came the bitcoin boom, I was still making good money in ecommerce at the time. I became aware and interested in bitcoin when it was still $40, but I didn't have any money back then. So when I learned about it again, I felt compelled to put in the money. I put about $250k in bitcoin at various prices, starting at 3k. I bought a bunch of shitcoins as well and obviously took some loss on them. I didn't know a thing about trading, or the market, or cryptocurrency. But I kept putting money in anyway. It didn't matter that I didn't know a thing because bitcoin kept going up, some of my shitcoins did as well, and it gave me a false sense of security. I was so indifferent that at one point my portfolio was worth $1.5m and I remember looking at it, not feeling a thing. Of course it didn't last, the crypto craze began to die down and my portfolio started tanking, the number kept going down, it went from $1.5m to 900k in one night, then 600, 400, 300... I didn't sell, mainly because I didn't care enough. Eventually, it's now worth around 100k. I'm still holding, can't sell it now. Back to the ecommerce business, my formula eventually became ineffective, coupling with changes in the market. Suddenly, I wasn't making money anymore. I was still indifferent though, I was worth over a million dollars at this point, bitcoin was still doing well. I felt burnt out. My motivation was money, I wasn't in it for some kind of mission nor had I any big meaningful vision. It was just for money. When I became indifferent to money, I became demotivated. Eventually I shut down the business and do whatever I thought would make me happy. I went travelling, that's when I realized travelling is no cure for the mind. I was still smoking weed heavily, to the point that I developed such a tolerance that I don't even feel high anymore. It was depressing, I was in my room for days doing nothing but smoke and drink. I had no idea what I wanted to do or to become. It took me one year before I got out of that downward spiral. I still don't know what I want to do. But I'm taking actions to find out. There are still fears and doubts and I'm fighting them everyday. But I'm in a better mindset now. I hope I find out what I want to do with my life, I've seen people with money and no vocation or passion and I don't want to be like them. In a way, making so much money so early in life is not necessarily a good thing, it holds you back and it's harder to take risks because you're afraid to lose what you have. I miss having nothing but a burning desire to take chances and work hard. I've become lazy and complacent. I don't know what this post is for, I guess I just wanted to share, I don't know who to talk to about this. [link] [comments] |

Have you been asking the question, "How can I make money online?" Posted: 01 May 2019 12:10 PM PDT Virtually every 'Make Money Online' course, ebook, website, blog, etc. will explain the goal of internet marketing is to have a system that will make you money on autopilot.
Laid out like that it really looks simple doesn't it? You can even do it with or without your own website. Just 3 steps to make money online! The better ebooks, courses and seminars add two extra steps to take advantage of an old marketing adage called the 'Rule of 7'. So, if you've been looking for the answer to "How to make money online?" then here is the formula to follow:
Those 5 basic steps give you a powerful (yet still simple) formula to make money online. At the basic level, it really is that simple. That's why online marketing appeals so much to the 'Get Rich Quick' seeker. The problem is that 'simple' does not necessarily mean 'easy'. Where it gets more complicated is in making sure each of those steps are done effectively. This is where the 'Get Rich Quick' seekers jump off the bandwagon and start yelling SCAM. As I said above, 'simple' isn't the same thing as 'easy'. While the 'Get Rich Quick' books do overhype how easy it is to get results, it's still a fact that this is a proven system. If you really want to learn how to make money online, you need to ignore the hype. There is no way that anyone can guarantee that you can make XX amount of money in XX amount of time. There are too many variables that have to be taken into consideration. Everything from how good you are at niche research all the way through how good you are at understanding the material and following instructions. The most important things you have to ask yourself are "What are your actual expectations?", and "How well do you understand what your actually doing for each step?". Your expectations will determine how long you'll follow through with the plan. If you expect to make $10,000 in two weeks, and after 3 weeks you still haven't made a sale then you'll probably give up and call it a scam, (That's usually caused by salespages making unrealistic promises). Even more importantly is how well you understand what needs to be done for each step. Even if it is possible to make $10,000 in two weeks, it isn't likely to happen unless you do everything exactly right. Your expectation shouldn't be to make $10,000 in two weeks. Instead, your goal should be to learn exactly how to do each step necessary for a successful marketing campaign. So, if you've been searching google, forums, blogs, ebooks, etc. for the answer to "How to make money online?", or even worse looking for "How to Get Rich Quick?", then you're asking the wrong questions. You've probably already found that answer over and over again, but keep ignoring it because that 3 step or 5 step formula I outlined above isn't complete enough for you to understand how to make it work. Instead you should be asking questions about how to do each of those steps; "How do I find a good product to sell?", "How do I find the best niche to market in?", "How do I set up a website that effectively promotes a product?" "How do I write articles that will lead a prospect to buy?", "How do I entice visitors to submit their emails?", "How do I get visitors to my website that are looking to buy?" "How do I make money online?" is the wrong question. You just have to learn to ask the right questions. Finding answers to all those more specific questions are how you'll learn to make money online. How can I land a licensing deal cheap and fast for cartoon character product (latex mask)? Posted: 01 May 2019 02:14 PM PDT Hi, I started a business last year producing high quality halloween masks. I want to get a license to sell a cartoon character mask . I have read this market is more about case-per-case negotiation but was wondering if there's a way to just purchase the rights automatically on the internet or something [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2019 11:22 AM PDT Hey, fellow entrepreneurs and lurkers, I'm here to share my experience with launching a niche product to my local market, and to seek feedback. Rewind 4 months. I stumbled upon a product that is around in the US and gaining a lot of exposure and interest. I have tried the product and it's amazing. I looked up whether we have it in my country and turns out there's nothing of that sort, but I am quite positive that it would make an impact here. I started to do research, as I've zero experience whatsoever with bringing something to the market. I began working on a website, reached lots of suppliers and actually found a supplier that is a perfect fit for me. I tried to learn everything that is even vaguely close to necessary to make it happen. Read a lot of books, lurked for people's experiences down here in reddit and asked different people about how it's done. Looked for the fundamentals of marketing, SEO, product design, finances and went deep with the background of the product itself. Learned to make my own website, basically do everything myself to save money. As of today, just days before finishing explaining my vision to a design company to make package designs and paying a copywriter.. Someone brought the exact same product to the market (5 variations, all the same!), with neat design and copywriting, but far from perfect. Oh, and I haven't mentioned, it's quite a niche product. I am writing this because my heart fell to the bottom of my boot after hearing about this, and although I have no prior experience, I figured I'd give something to this subreddit, too. I'm already in a really tight spot financially and with my family life, just finished school with a bachelor, and I have unfortunately learned is something I never want to do. I feel devastated, having my first good idea that I'm so close to launching and now someone beat me to it. Don't go for perfection, don't try to do everything yourself. If you see an opening in the market, seize it and make it happen. It doesn't have to have the best design, the best marketing, the best SEO, the best copywriting and you don't have to know everything. Start small, you'll learn in the way and you can always adjust and change things after going public. I am a perfectionist and it's a clear sign that this isn't always the best trait. I could've made a move two months ago, having all the fundamentals laid out and ready, but I decided to make everything perfect and stupidly enough believed that nobody will have this great idea before I bring my product to the market. What do you think, has any of you had an experience like this and how did you go on with it? Did you quit with that idea? Did you still make it happen and went to compete with anyone else? Should I still go for it and do my best to keep up? Maybe the competition is good and makes me try even harder? Should I move on and look for other opportunities? [link] [comments] |

Ghost Resto/ Virtual resto Idea Posted: 01 May 2019 12:34 PM PDT Virtual restaurant (ghost resto) is a restaurant that doesn't have a full fledge store presence. i'm thinking of launching one virtual restaurant using several delivery partner applications (like UberEats) within an existing restaurant. What are some legal aspects of launching this business idea? -do i need another business license for this? (since the virtual restaurant will have an entirely different menu and name compared to the existing one). -The existing restaurant is running under a franchise model (i think.... or some variation of franchise) and i'm an owner of one of the restaurant of the franchise brand (i'm not the owner of the franchise brand). how do i launch the virtual restaurant concept without running into legal troubles with my franchise brand? thanks for your inputs! How do I partner or buy into an existing business? Posted: 01 May 2019 10:04 AM PDT I have a full time job that pays well and I want to add another income stream. Posted: 01 May 2019 10:51 AM PDT Hi!, Soo.. What is the best way to purchase from Alibaba without getting scammed? I would like to purchase tumbled gemstones as well as other items from Alibaba. Ive talked to some suppliers who gave me a link to their online catalog to purchase from. Ive also asked for a sample product. Some suppliers offer samples and some don't. Is it a scam for suppliers to suggest purchasing from an external site other than Alibaba? Would purchasing through Alibaba with Paypal protect my money? Also, I noticed that a lot of suppliers sell by the gram or kilogram where its a lot more for one stone.. Is this a scam? Whats your experience? Seeking advice..... [link] [comments] |
Anyone have experience with distributors, specifically those dealing w/ wine? Posted: 01 May 2019 02:02 PM PDT Our family has been working with a wine distributor for 2 and a half years now. They recently just got a new head of wine management and we're meeting with him soon. So far they have done a good job in sales and continue to improve each year. I don't have a lot of experience in these types of meetings so I was just looking for some line of questioning that would be a good base for our developing business? What type of info should I bring to the meeting? What are fair expectations to have going forward? [link] [comments] |
What is a good idea to start a side business to make a good/decent income Posted: 01 May 2019 01:21 PM PDT So yeah, the title says it already, i am wondering what is a good idea to start a business on the side of my actual daily job. My main reasons why i want to start making (a lot) of money are the following : - First off all, very simple, because i want to make a lot of money every month that i can live without having to worry about anything money related - Second, in this day and age i find you just need to make a nice income (more then the average joe makes) just to be able to afford the simplest things in live, things are getting really expensive and this is only getting worse by the years that go by, a house, a nice car, and so on... - Third, i want to be able to take care of my mom, the one who took care of me for her whole life almost, by this i mean two things, first of all, i want to be able to say to my mom (i don't have my father anymore, rest in peace), here is such amount of money because that would make her life so much easier, my mom is a hard worked and worked normal jobs all her life so she doesn't make 6 figure income also, it's sad how the hardest workers in the world make the least amount of money but that just the way things are, and second reason, i often find myself thinking about later in life, let's say my mother needs to get medical help at old age, or needs to get to a home (i rather let her live with me, if that is possible at that moment), i want to be able to pay for all that, and those things are really expensive, if you have an average joe income, things can become pretty tight money wise pretty fast - And fourth, i want to be self employed and maybe even have people working for/with me, i think i would be a good employer just because of the years of experience working as a normal employee i have, i've always had this mindset but i seem to always struggle with the what to do and how to do it, i never really acted further onto it untill now, i work now already for a long time as an employee in the "lowest" income wage scale and i think it's time to start a new chapter in my life because if i don't do it now, it just never will become reality and always will be a dream I want to be able to get to the point to make at least 100k a year or even a little more, and i know that things will not fall into my lap from the first month off course, things need to be build up and grow I am here on this Reddit asking this question just because i do have this mindset about wanting to be self employed and make a good figure income for almost my whole life, but i always seem to struggle with the what and how to do it like i said before I've seen a lot of stories here about people who are or were successful and i think there is someone out here who can help me a lot with this problem I'm sorry if my English or sentence making is pretty poor but i'm not from an English speaking region in my country so it's not my native language [link] [comments] |
[Mobile App Entrepreneurs] How do you Design your Mobil App Icons? Posted: 01 May 2019 12:48 PM PDT Hi there! I'm trying to make a living by creating Android & iOS apps on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. So far I'm getting some success in my apps, some are generating revenue to sustain my living expenses. (I live in Eastern Europe so ~2000$/month covers my family's expense) However, designing an App Icon became very problematic for me. Takes too long to design an eye-catching icon and resize it accordingly is a tough job to be honest. How do you guys design your app icons? Do you have a tool/automatization for it? If not, I'm considering building my own tool to scratch my own itch. So I've created a poll to see your thoughts on this: https://forms.gle/4SVHodWYJ7PudYEJ9 I will share its results publicly if anybody want to chip in. Hope to hear from you guys, All the best [link] [comments] |
Working with what you have at a local level and competing with bigger brands. Posted: 01 May 2019 11:11 AM PDT I have recently been looking at the area I live in and wondering what I can do with my resources to make a successful business. I live in Florida near a very nice beach with a very large population of wealthy people. There is a big market for all natural foods, luxury products, wine, cheese, etc. you name it they are willing to pay for it. I already work with a company that supplies a local restaurant chain (4 locations) with all of their beef. In the past we sold D2C at a popular farmers market and during the summer we had days where we would do over 1k in sales in 3-4 hours. Though the cost of keeping all the product we needed to make sure we had enough of everything on hand was costly and we quit doing it. Right now we are only supplying restaurants, and while that is bringing in a good steady income, I want to branch out more and try to improve our profits. I have put some thought into doing a home delivery service of our products. I have thought up a website where people in surrounding areas would be able to place a custom order for beef, chicken, pork, etc and have it delivered to their house maybe monthly or bi-weekly. What do you think about this idea? While I was thinking about that I also wondered, if people might want our organic meats delivered to their house would they also want other products from in the city also delivered? The restaurants we are partnered with also own a wine and cheese shop, and there are many other shops that provide high quality products like the wine shop or like my business did at farmers markets. Do you think people would be willing to pay to have access to a delivery service that would go to all of these small shops and markets and pick up all of what they want and have it delivered to their door? If they would do you think my small business would be able to compete with companies like InstaCart? The main advantage that we would have is that we could partner with the local markets and shops while a national brand like InstaCart only works with large stores like publix and wholefoods. Posted: 01 May 2019 10:43 AM PDT I am planning on making a non-profit site (no selling stuff nor adds). A simple site with mainly information about language learning (grammar-, vocab-, listening-, ... lessons) and also as an extra a small blog portion. If I would Use Squarespace it would cost me 11 dollars a month with the yearly plan + 20 dollars for domain renewal each year. Bluehost would cost me around the same amount starting the second year but I can't find any pricing on the renewal rates for the domains. Both options look appealing, Squarespace because it's easy to use and when I used it some years ago I was quite happy with it. Wordpress I also used before but I found it quite troublesome to set up and in the end I got way to much spam on the blog portion of the site. I would like to have some of your opinions. Are there any hidden price tags which I have missed? Which one would be the best for me? [link] [comments] |
Naming a company - go with simple but clear name or try to go clever/unique? Posted: 01 May 2019 10:31 AM PDT I'm starting a website that will be a buy/sell platform for a product with a strong enthusiast following, and am having a little trouble deciding on a name. I already own the domain {brandname}sforsale.com and therefore was planning on naming the company {BrandName}s for Sale. While clear in what it is, this is a very basic and boring name, non-unique, and the exact social media handles are already taken. Alternatively, I could go with something like {BrandNickname} Buys or try to come up with something tangentially related, but I'm worried alternate names will be less obvious in what the company is about or make me sound like a vendor instead of a platform. So what should I do for the name? Clear yet boring and non-unique, or try to be clever and hope to build an understanding following? [link] [comments] |
Using Stripe in unsupported countries Posted: 01 May 2019 10:19 AM PDT So, I am a Shopify store owner and I want to use Stripe and integrate it as a payment gateway in my store. I'm forced to open Stripe but I'm sceptical and afraid, I know I need an EIN and an LLC, or an ITIN for sole proprietorship, I also know that I need a PO box and US phone number. I need advice from anyone that has done this, what's your experience? Is there a risk they ask me for personal documents like a passport or identification card ? I'm kinda stuck since I've seen plenty of positive experiences but also as much negative from this whole process... The pain of knowing how to make money but not being able to get it to you is the worst ugh.. If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it! [link] [comments] |
Monetizing an Instagram account Posted: 01 May 2019 09:49 AM PDT I have an Instagram account that I started several years ago as a hobby and I have upwards of 55k followers. It will be a small investment and hopefully we will make 500-1000 euro a month at the begging if we are lucky. So it's really not a big deal at the moment. We are 2 and we need to keep truck of expenses somehow. Can you guys recommend an app? or a sours where I could find a good ready exel sheet to keep track? [link] [comments] |

How do I go about finding employees from abroad? Posted: 01 May 2019 09:23 AM PDT I'm UK based. Are there any trustworthy routes I can go by to do this? Posted: 01 May 2019 05:34 AM PDT After reading this section for a while now, I often find alot of these success stories seem rather cryptic maybe for a good reason, but also some well and truly amazing individuals who are inspirational. To those who find and idea and run with it, you must feel a sigh of relief, as I'm normally going around in circles for idea's. I have a domain and web hosting but beyond that not much and I'm looking for minimal investment. I've shortlisted some things, though I may not always have the skills I'm keen to learn and push myself to overcome hurdles. They are:
I also want something that gives me room to branch out depending on if its successful, so for example Logo design, could also branch out into short audience targeted advertisments, or banners just for a quick example. I'd love to hear anyones thoughts, and could really use some guidance in the right direction. I work full time, so this would be mainly a part time affair or until something works and is stable enough to support my family. My motivation is show my kids that you can do anything when you put your mind to it and will power and I'm 30, feeling like better now than never. Also any personal experiences with the above would be very welcome, good or bad. TIA [link] [comments] |
Want to start a weekend business, have about $5k to invest. Suggestions? Posted: 01 May 2019 05:13 AM PDT I have a CS background and work on data analysis and machine learning full time. The problem is that it's difficult to apply these skills on a small scale. Can hardly find any freelance jobs, let alone turn it into a side business. My bigger issue is that currently during weekends I sink my energy into designing applications (even writing code), which I know I won't follow through with, just so I feel like I'm pursuing without the stress of delivering (wanterpreneuring I guess). I'd like to get into a service which I can apply automation to, to apply my professional skill set at some point. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2019 05:13 AM PDT About 5 years ago - I took a photo of my dog Drake who is a coonhound. I hashtagged the photo #coonhoundsofinstagram. I search and see no one has this @coonhoundsofinstagram account so I start it. I shared other followers photos and have developed a neat little following 33.1k followers as of this morning. I do not believe many of them of spammy - they all seem legit. We never advertised or payed for likes (didn't need to, I didn't start this account to get big, famous, make money, or become an influencer). About 3 years ago we started selling calendars around Christmas of the top photos we get from followers (with permission of the photo taker). We average $3-$4k in calendar sales, with about $2k in profits. About 3 times a year a lady who paints portraits of dogs will Venmo me $50 to make a quick post for her. But that is about it. I never really did much with this account other than share photos of dogs on a daily basis. We do a lot of chatting and dm's with followers talking about their hounds. But I feel I can start to capitalize on this platform somehow. How do I do this? What's my next step? I feel I have a really good engaging account, but not sure what the next step is.
