Employee has brain issues, mistakes costing money and time

    Posted: 28 May 2019 08:53 PM PDT

I have a small company with 12 employees plus myself. My very first hire was this gentleman who a decade ago was very productive and a great help. He had a few medical issues when he first started working for me and had to take medical leave. During that time I paid his normal salary and benefits for 4 months while he recouperated (he was only with the company a year at this point). After those issues were resolved he had about 7 years hiccup free until more recently. As time had gone on we have added quite a few new employees and his job duties lessened as we had more support staff. In the past year he has started to become very forgetful to the point that every our customers have reached out to ask if he is ok. He has also started to rely on others to go out of their way to fix problems he has created. He is a likable guy and everyone just helps him out because he is going through testing to see if there is something wrong with him. This keeps leaving us in a predicament since we have other people do his job when he is unavailable and they do it in about 60% the time it take him to accomplish the same thing. He is on average costing the company 200$ in mistakes weekly at this point. We all feel bad since he in a long time employee but at the end of the day we are running a business that needs to turn a profit. Any suggestions on what to do? Help!

An interesting tag line for a small Etsy shop?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 08:46 PM PDT

I am just getting started with my little Etsy shop and I'm still getting everything set up. I really want a half decent tag line before I really start selling my stuff. I sell resin jewelry that I cast myself, felt cacti and dolls I hand sew myself, and anything else that I make. All of it is handmade by me and I want that to be an important part of my brand, that everything is homemade and handcrafted. Most of my stuff is loosely nature-themed as well. The name of my shop is "Grace's Grove" and the only things I can really think of are "heartfelt and handmade gifts" but I don't really like just that. I like the term trinket, as in "heartfelt and handmade trinkets", but that has the negative connotation that they are cheaply made and not worth anything. Anyone have a better suggestion for a word or tag line that is better? Edit: I'd also like a logo design that will stand out, but I have nothing beyond a couple cartoony cacti. Any ideas?

NASA just released info on its insulation materials portfolio. Has anyone checked this out yet?

It looks like they have a special licensing rate for startups too.

Pricing for after hours service contract

    Posted: 28 May 2019 07:19 PM PDT

I own a small computer service company, working almost exclusively during normal business hours, but am bidding on a contract for the summer which would also include after hours (6 pm to midnight) service as needed. Any ideas on how much to charge for the after hours portion? And how much of that should go to the tech that will be on call?

    Gift ideas for repeat customers?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 07:36 AM PDT

I'm looking for ideas for gifts for repeat customers. Most orders I receive average $350. The problem is I'm in the customization industry. Custom patches to be specific. I have no idea what would be a nice gift for customers who are already purchasing their own customized things. I already throw in a few extra patches as it is on each order just in case and it's always very appreciated.

I'd be alright spending $15 per customer. Any ideas would be very helpful!

Is this a workers Comp. Claim? How do I best handle it?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 02:53 AM PDT

Hey everyone. I have a small demolition/asbestos abatement company that was just started last October. We have 3 full time employees, 3 active partners, and a dozen or so employees (w-4) that we use on a project to project bases. Over the weekend, one of our project to project employees ended up in the hospital with a breathing issue. He notified me of it Monday of this week. He made 3 trips to the hospital over the weekend and doctors determined the breathing issue to be related to the dust that he was exposed to in his normal duties at work.

-No asbestos was being removed on this project (only project he's been on with us)

-Dust masks were provided for employee use

    -Employee hire date is 5/13/19

This is my first time dealing with a workplace injury and I'm hoping to get some guidance. From the research I've done so far, it looks like paying the hospital bill for him directly is not the right way to go and could leave us vulnerable to penalties. Is filing a workers comp claim a requirement/am I correct that paying the bill directly is a bad choice?

    Thanks for the help!!

Our competitor has taken ruining our business as his personal mission

    Posted: 28 May 2019 06:57 AM PDT

I run a small academy in Spain, and I have had nothing but an uphill battle since I began over 6 years ago. I worked for this competitor for a year or two a long time ago, and many years before starting my own business. (Just as a clarification, it's not like I started my business directly after leaving my position, but rather a few years down the line after working in other schools)

Apart from the variety of tax inspections he sends (all of which were passed no problems), threatening letters, phone calls about how he's going to 'bring me down'... I also hear accusations about me like I stole books from his academy (I returned them all) and I took advantage of his fathers passing to steal students... (This blows my mind.) His father happened to pass away just after I had left, but I didn't even have my own business at that time, I worked for other schools so I don't know how he thinks I stole his students. The fact of the matter is, he dropped the ball and students started leaving, that has absolutely nothing to do with me except timing. But now, he's taken to google to leave a false review that I can't get taken down despite all my best efforts and it's the review that shows up first...

I have already spoken to a lawyer and they say there isn't a whole lot we can do, as he pretty much covers his tracks each time and at the end of the day the advice was to let it die down... but it's been a few years and it's still going strong. I honestly believe he thinks every misfortune is a direct result of my business. If he loses a student, I think he believes I stole them, despite the fact that I am just one of 5 other academies in my area and I am doing no better nor no worse than they are. It has turned into some weird personal vendetta fuelled by his delusion that I somehow took advantage of his fathers passing to boost my business, even though I didn't have a business then.

I'm not interested in starting some weird review war, and I don't want to get into stupid fights with a competitor, I just want to run my business in peace. Here's where I need some advice from other small business owners.

    1. How do you get the review taken down? I have emailed and called google, with direct proof that the poster is a competitor (he didn't try to hide it, his google account where he left the review also has a youtube account where he posts ads for his school!), and show them the proof that this is against the google policy. But they don't look at the proof and just say 'flag it as inappropriate again'. This has been going on for 6 months.
    2. If I can't get it taken down, how would I respond to something like that? I am afraid that if I respond, he'll just get more fired up and start posting fake reviews to justify it. I don't want to have to deal with that. We only just got them to stop posting on our business facebook trying to slander us. (By that I mean I had to disable comments, but it worked so fine. lol)
    3. Has anyone dealt with anything similar? How did you go about it?

I'm afraid that responding in any way to this weird attacks will just bring people't attention to it, and there's no way to come out of that not looking petty.

I have a good standing in the community and I have a great reputation, so while he isn't doing a lot of damage currently, I am afraid if he picks away at it long enough, he will. It seems like preventing this situation from going any further will be a lot better than trying to clean up issues in the future. I live in a small town, so word spreads fast, and I don't want to have to worry about what he'll do next.

Any advice or personal story is welcome.

Who do I go to to have a product designed?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 07:25 AM PDT

I have a business idea that's based off an existing product already. It relies on a mechanism that completely changes the way we use an everyday item. My plan is to apply this mechanism design into a similar item that is smaller. Who do I reach out to to design this for me?

I have done my initial research and this is what I have so far: - No patents on the design of the mechanism since it's considered public domain - I have purchased the said product and will use it as a sample

    Thanks!

Need help in PROSPECTING! (Facebook and Instagram Ads Marketing Agency)

    Posted: 28 May 2019 07:06 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I run an Social Media Marketing Agency (SMMA) specifically focused on helping other business owners in marketing their products / services by using Facebook and Instagram ads. The problem is: Finding Clients. I don't seem to find business owners who are interested in this type of marketing method. Granted that I live here in the Philippines, much of my prospects aren't familiar yet with the concept and aren't willing to advertise by spending money. They usually rely on free advertisements - posting on Facebook groups, their Social media accounts, basically free methods of advertising online. If someone can help me find clients, I would truly appreciate it! Any tips or course of action will be certainly appreciated for I am desperate to find clients.

Asking for advises in pricing products and estimate advertising budget

    Posted: 29 May 2019 12:30 AM PDT

I'm currently running a small online clothing shop. I chose facebook and instagram to advertise my brand. The business has been running for 3 month and i'm a little hesitate cause i did not see much profit coming out of it. It's not that I want it to grow big quickly or something but at least i want some numbers to make sure that it's getting better.

Anw, as i observed, my problem is from the pricing process, my product prices are usually twice as the production cost added in the marketing budget of 20%. Am i pricing my products too low? Or should i do anything to change this situation?

Credit card payment processor paperwork is for an online store?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 08:40 PM PDT

I have been dealing with an ongoing back and forth with Payvision to be our credit card processor for my web store.

The problem that I am having is that they seem to be asking for an unusually large amount of paperwork.

    They are asking us for:

    1) Certificate of Incorporation

    2) Shareholder Registry

    3) Articles Memorandum of Association

    4) Appointment of Directors

    5) Directors Registry

    6) Credit card processing statements of the last six months

Is this a bit excessive? My partner says that in his 30 years of running a physical store, hes never had to provide this much information. Is this different for an online store, or should this be a red flag?

The last time we switched to a new one at the brick and mortar location, they just asked who we used last and gave us a new machine just like that.

Securing a loan for a storage facility

    Posted: 28 May 2019 06:43 AM PDT

Looking at starting a boat/rv storage facility in my local area. Lots of recreation in this area and the storage facilities always have lengthy wait-lists. I've done some research on costs, currently developing a plan, but not sure which way to go on financing. This would be a startup, not an existing business, so I know it will be a challenge to get financing.

Several of the key areas I will need to develop include land, grating and improvements, security, and access. I've a decent idea of the costs with these based on the land I want to purchase, however, I understand I'd need collateral. I don't have that. I have about $40k I can put down. Not sure if this would be a mortgage or a business loan, and what type of business loan. This limits my ability to accurately estimate costs because I don't know what types of terms I should be considering.

Any help with a starting point?

    Survey for small business owners!

    Posted: 28 May 2019 03:24 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm a college student in Oregon who's currently doing an internship for a small insurance company in Portland. I've made a survey for small business owners to complete in the hope that I can analyze the data and figure out what small business owners think about insurance. The survey is anonymous and takes about 3 minutes to complete. It contains basic questions about small business insurance/insurance agents/ and insurance providers. The link is below. The survey is through a site called Qualtrics that I have access to through my university.

Looking for affordable VOIP for a new venture

    Posted: 28 May 2019 11:29 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking for a feature rich voip service that will allow me to have an auto attendant system in place (press 1 for sales, 2 for customer service, etc) for my business. Being that I am a solopreneur, all calls will be forwarded to the same number, my cellphone. SMS and Call Recording would also be features that are important, as is an app to use on my phone or laptop.

I am looking for a provider in the $20 a month range. Who do you recommend?

Should I takeover family business & assets?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 05:13 PM PDT

    Hi,

My parents have a very small restaurant and plan to retire in 2 to 3 years. They'd like to switch ownership to me as majority shareholder, so that I will have control over the business and assets.

There is steady business based on good food and to my dad's overall friendly interaction with customers. The business also has the land that the business is on. It's set up as an incorporated company.

I can choose to hire staff to run the restaurant remotely because I don't live there or try to sell the business.

Are there any potential downsides or liabilities I should know about before taking over

    Thanks

Student Loan Payment Matching Benefits - Does anyone do this?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 10:44 PM PDT

I own a small physical therapy clinic, and in the PT world student debt is becoming a huge issue. I currently have 5 PTs working for me and I know for all 5 of them student loan payments are front of mind.

I have considered implementing a benefits program to match any payments the PTs make above their minimum payment to an upper limit (for example - if their student loan payment is $1,000/month - I will match every dollar they make over that $1/month up to $500/month.

My question if anyone does this and how best to structure this. Could this be an expense for my business as are normal benefits? Can it be applied on a pre-tax basis to the employees as 401K benefits are. Is this too far fetched for me to do?

We are looking to improve our conversion rate and I thought about sharing our website with you guys and ask for your feedback.

Please be honest, we are really looking to improve but we would like to know what other entrepreneurs like you would add/change/remove on our online store. Please feel free to share any opinions, we are really open to suggestions/critics.

Looking for Opinions on Some Questions

    Posted: 28 May 2019 11:30 AM PDT

Hello! While walking and organizing my brain today, I thought to myself, "I wish I had a successful business-person family member or mentor to ask these questions to...", and then I remembered all of you kind internet strangers!

I come to you with questions, and I appreciate your responses. Thank you in advance.

    Context

For the past 6-12 months I've been freelancing as a software engineer, and trying to grow the freelancing into a business.

Currently my focus is building web applications.

I've grown the business to three (3) clients. And I have four (4) freelancers helping me part-time at the moment.

The biggest challenge I've had is getting out of the senior engineer position, and hiring someone (a senior engineer) to do all the technical work.

I think my main fear is my current clients leaving me and hiring these engineers themselves.

    Questions

Here are some questions I have, in no particular order of importance. Just some things I would like to discuss with other business owners.

    1. Would a client be sour if they knew my profit margins? Currently I charge by the hour. Say $60/hr. The freelancers that are helping me do the work are international, so I can hire help for $10/hr if I wanted. However, I've had better luck at $25/hr, $30/hr, $40/hr, etc. Would you bill the customer whatever your desired profit margin over the blended hourly rate is? Say I want a 33% profit margin and the labor cost me $40/hr on average, then I would charge $60/hr. -- It could get messy always adjusting my hourly rate, for me and the customer alike. Imagine I needed to bring on additional help whose hourly rate was $60/hr. Now I need to ask the customer for a higher hourly rate. Or vice versa, say my whole team now is working for $5/hr, is it fair to keep charging the customer $60/hr?
    2. How do I replace myself and still retain my customers? If I want to grow the business, I have to get processes and people in place, and get out of the way myself. I understand that. But my fear is an existing customer saying "Alright, I'm paying for all these cheaper people. Why don't I just hire them directly and get a better deal?" These are customers who I started with as a one-man show. What reasoning could I give them that it is better for them if I have more time to do other things than just code or review code.
    3. Should I look for new clients, or spend time working on the business' website? I got started freelancing on Upwork, and so that is my primary sales channel at the moment. I still don't have a website to date. Although the primary goal of a website for me is to get more clients, I think there are other benefits. Say I just received an invitation to apply for a certain project on Upwork today. Should I pursue that, or work on the website which I've been wanting to get set up for months now. Pursuing the new opportunity means spending time talking with the customer, getting the project set up, hiring for it, and then managing it. After which I would probably have time for the site again. I am all for hiring someone to build my business' website, but I want to spend time thinking of the core identity and service offering first.

    Thank you for your time!

If you have any other thoughts that came to mind while reading this, please share!

Edit: Mind you, all of my staff are currently contractors from Upwork as well.
