If someone else hits me and I have video proof of it, and my dad has insurance on the car but my name is not on the policy, what happens then? Btw I'm asking for ONTARIO driver laws.

    Thanks

I reareded anelectric car as it "malfunctioned"

    Posted: 28 May 2019 02:28 PM PDT

No brake lights came on and I rear-ended it. This is an Austin Texas. The officers said no one was at fault because the lady admitted her vehicle malfunctioned and lost all power. My insurance company says I'm at fault. I drive for a living. I thought I was maintaining a safe distance. Am I screwed?

Ticked mama to be Due to Greed

    Posted: 29 May 2019 02:13 AM PDT

    Hello All:

I'm reaching out since I do not know how to proceed and in need of sound advice. I feel so upset, sad, and betrayed. While my husband and I are to focus on our first baby due in August, instead, we are now slapped in the face with a $20,000.00 medical bill due my employer not paying its insurance premiums. On 2/14, I had to go to the hospital due to being high risk. I spent the following five days for treatment and observation thus causing the vast majority of my medical bills. The following are things I believe should be worth mentioning so I hope it helps:

    1. Yes, they deducted my portion out of my check every two weeks.

    2. The (to me) shady insurance used was through an administration company (BAS). They would find smaller insurance companies to process the claim. Unfortunately, we were waiting on my husband's government clearance and he wasn't able to start work until cleared. This was our only option.

    3. My former company's poor practices caught up with them since they are now under receivership. The company currently 'claims' to have no cash to pay the millions in unprocessed insurance claims.

    4. Since November 2018, this company has not made one payment to the insurance company. We've NEVER received any notice unless it was sent by the reciever (which by that point was last minute).

Now that the reciever will be released in June I don't know what to do or who I should 'specifically' reach out to for legal advice (so many types of lawyers etc...). The DOL investigator recommends that I go to bankruptcy court, but why should I suffer due to the greed and negligence of others? I don't understand. I feel so violated. What was supposed to be one of the happiest times in our lives is now the most stressful due to greedy people.

County Never Notified Me That Medi-Cal Was Terminated

    Posted: 28 May 2019 04:35 PM PDT

Just wondering how serious this situation is and if there's anything to pursue besides waiting.

Basically there's been miscommunication in renewing our Medi-Cal eligibility with our county office. I've provided all necessary documentation and have called every month since January during this process and it's been in limbo then reassigned. But I've never once received any form of communication or confirmation or phone call except regarding our son's insurance. 3 weeks ago when I finally had to submit a reevaluation for eligibility because they didn't like the documents I submitted the previous month, (which I only found out by calling) they looked up on their system and confirmed that we were still active during this whole process, we didn't lose coverage. Makes sense, they've never said otherwise. I tried to get prescriptions yesterday and I'm informed it was terminated in March. I call the county and they confirmed this as well despite what they told me 3 weeks ago. They never informed us it was terminated. I would've gotten other insurance during this time had I known but now I can't get prescriptions and I have to wait for them to process our reevaluation "in the order it was received."

Is there any repercussions for them failing to communicate to us in any way? Especially if we get significantly sick from not being able to get prescriptions? I've just been so patient and provided so many documents and statements with no communication in return. It just seems wrong.

Other party accepted cash settlement for automobile accident - but does not agree with the assessed value. What should I do?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 12:39 AM PDT

Hi I'm pretty new to how automobile insurance works so I'd like to ask for advice.

Car in front of me suddenly stopped, and a collision did occur between the front of my car and his rear. We were both going at very low speeds (20 kph). No one got hurt thankfully and we followed the necessary procedures and amicably agreed to have insurance settle it. My car was insured, the other party's car was not.

I had my car fixed at an accredited shop and the other party was advised to do the same. However, I later learned that the other party wanted to have it done at a car shop that was not under the accredited list, and opted instead for a cash settlement.

This party was advised by my insurance that it would take longer to assess and evaluate the settlement amount, and it might be different from the asking price of the repairs made by the unaccredited shop. The other party agreed to this.

Later on when the settlement amount was decided, the other party is saying that the amount given by my insurance is too low and they do not agree to it. From the looks of it they may have had the repairs made without waiting for the settlement to be decided. How do I proceed with this?

    Thanks in advance as well!

Have all insurance companies agreed together not to provide home insurance coverage for less than double the cost of your house?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 12:19 AM PDT

I'm not a lottery guy, I don't have big dreams, and neither does my mortgage company. My mortgage company, they say to me, "we only require insurance coverage up to the value of the loan"

Yeah, awesome, except there's not a single insurance company I've ever encountered that doesn't assume you want to rebuild after a god damn nuclear bomb irradiates your whole lot

Is there some underdog, who isn't shady, that will give me regular ass home insurance for a regular ass home? I don't need to strike it rich and pay a billion dollars to rebuild an $80k house

Wife was rear ended by a car that was rear ended by another car

    Posted: 28 May 2019 10:42 AM PDT

19 year old kid was the culprit of the whole thing. Lied and says he didn't have insurance as it was his father's truck. Turned out he did.

Wife's neck and back have been in a tremendous amount of pain since January. After 8.5 weeks of Chiropractic care she's starting to feel whole again. Many sleepless nights & a fair amount of discomfort.

Now that the insurance company has prepared an offer to settle the claim of $3800, we don't know if this is fair or not. Considering the difference I saw in her during her recovery, I can't help but feel this is not taking into consideration the months of not being well.

Does this sound fair? Do we have any leeway in asking for reconsideration? What should we be asking/thinking about when doing so?

Got a huge dent on my parent's Toyata CHR 2018. My name is not on the car insurance. What's my best option?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 11:38 PM PDT

Hi kind strangers, this is my throwaway account for this car issue. Please have a look at my mistake pictures. I would really appreciate any advices and suggestions.

I have a driving license, but I don't have a car as I live in a big city and use public transportation to save money. I'm visiting my parents for two weeks, and I use their Toyota CHR 2018 to get here and there as they live in a more countryside suburb. My name is not on my parent's car insurance, and I don't have any car insurance with my name as I don't need one where I live.

I steer the car a little too soon when I pulled out the car from the parking lot, and the passenger side brushed the cement wall and leaves a huge dent, some paints and a bit of the plastic bumper thing came off. I'm looking right now some youtube DIY videos on how to fix the dent and put the plastic thing back together, but I'm thinking of just going to the mechanic because I'm afraid to screw up anymore.

I don't want my parents' car insurance rate to go up and have the car accident remark appear on their driving history. I'm really broke right now and only have $1k in my bank. What's my best option here? Thank you.

Other driver changed insurance companies since accident. Something fishy?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 10:24 PM PDT

Very odd--when the accident transpired the other driver had provided an expired registration and an expired insurance card.

Months later, he is pursuing me for damages to his and he still hasn't fixed his car but somehow on a different insurance company (under someone else's name) but that his him listed as a driver. It appears that this second policy might be valid during that date range--but why wait so long to pursue this?

    It feels fishy.

Any coverage for Adult at Fitness Center

    Posted: 28 May 2019 09:04 PM PDT

My husband is a very active adult, he loves basketball and working out at the fitness center. I know lucky me right! But being so active and lanky means he is always hurting himself and since he works construction a broken arm will mean a lot of lost wage. Is there anything that will cover him at the gym? I looked at Aflac but it looks like they specifically exclude fitness centers.

    Any help is appreciated.

How much home owners insurance do I need?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 09:03 PM PDT

I just purchased a home, and I don't know anything about insurance. I asked my insurance company how much coverage I need, but it seems "more is always better" is the only answer they're keen on providing. In the appraisal, they give you an estimated cost of new construction. My assumption is that if the house was completely lost in a fire (or similar covered event), it would cost that amount to rebuild. It's likely I'm completely wrong about this. The appraisal looks basically like this: cost if new: $350k. Appraisal price: $620k. Purchase price: $600k. Does this mean I need $600k, to fully cover what I paid, or would say $500k suffice to cover rebuilding plus the items inside?

I'm in Washington, and really appreciate any advice!

Condo Insurance Comparison Shopping: great rate too good to be true?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 04:55 PM PDT

First time condo buyer comparison shopping for insurance. Seems most quotes were in the same ballpark except Geico's (via The Hartford), which was far and away the lowest. I feel like I'm overlooking something. All quotes are replacement cost and not actual cash value. What other questions should I be asking?

See below for breakout. All companies I compared had 70K dwelling and 20K personal belongings as base values.

    Average for non-Geico companies

(USAA, Farmers, Amica, State Farm, Allstate)

    • Annual Premium: 712
    • Monthly premium: 58
    • Deductible: 1K
    • Loss of Use: 12K
    • Personal liability: 250K
    • Medical Payment 2K
    • Association assessment: 20K

    Geico (via The Hartford)

    • Annual Premium: 392
    • Monthly premium: 33
    • Deductible: 500 (increasing to 1K didn't reduce premium)
    • Loss of Use: 8K
    • Personal liability: 300K
    • Medical Payment 2K
    • Association Assessment: 0? Need to verify

Am I overlooking something with Geico?

    Reimbursement for gas?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 04:05 PM PDT

I was involved in a not at fault accident 3 weeks ago and my car was a Ford Fusion Hybrid. The rental place gave me a truck as it was all they had and it is using significantly more gas than I would in the hybrid. I don't figure I can but could I get reimbursed for the gas I used in the truck vs what I would have paid had my car not been wrecked

A while ago while browsing around for credit cards I saw an ad for buying rental car insurance....

    Posted: 28 May 2019 12:18 PM PDT

Now I can't recall exactly if I was browsing a credit card offer or an insurance company offer. This wasn't the typical credit card benefits added coverage. Im pretty sure it said something like we'll cover your rental, buy only when you need it. So basically it would be the same coverage as I'd buy through the rental company but it was an offer through a large insurance company or a large credit card company. Do you guys know of anything like that existing?

Just curious, why did my car insurance go down when I bought a new car?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 06:12 AM PDT

Recently traded in a 2008 Honda Civic and financed a 2019 Kia Rio hatchback. My insurance payment is 4 payments for every 6 months of coverage. Premiums went from 4 payments of $122.92 to 4 payments of $91.02. That's over $250 a year saved. Same exact coverage levels and everything. The finance person at the dealership had never heard of this happening, neither had some older family members who had purchased many cars over their lifetime. I'm not complaining, just very curious as what might cause this.

Getting called about an accident I was not involved with

    Posted: 28 May 2019 06:04 PM PDT

So earlier today I got a call from Geico Claims saying they had a claim on file for me about an incident that happened on the 26th. I was at work two days ago and nothing happened (my car can even be seen parked in our parking lot on security cameras). I shrugged it off as a wrong number or something and deleted the message. I got another call now from Chubb Auto Claims (didn't know a company named Chubb existed) saying something similar. Am I being scammed or did I get set up somehow? I haven't called any of them yet (it's too late at the time of this posting) so I'm not sure what to do.

What happens to a vehicle if it's wrecked while on vacation hundreds of miles from home?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 05:43 PM PDT

What would happen to my vehicle if it is wrecked a few hundred miles away from home and is inoperable? This hasn't happened, thankfully (and knock on wood). I travel often for vacation and have always wondered how much it would cost to bring the car home (400-500 miles). Would it ruin my vacation? Would insurance cover the tow to have it brought home and repaired while I rented a rental car and continued my vacation? In general, what would be some options? Thank you.

Will homeowners insurance cover my fiberglass pool that popped up out of the ground?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 05:30 PM PDT

We just bought our house last August and it has a fiberglass inground pool. We closed it as soon as we moved in since summer was pretty well over (we live in the Midwest of the US). We opened it a few weeks ago and the pool was in great shape, just dirty. We were having trouble cleaning it, so we decided to get a liner put it. We found a guy to install the liner and ordered it. Well last night we had a terrible storm and my pool basically started popping up out of the ground. It has raised the sidewalk up all around it and has broken some of the concrete on the sidewalk. It's a mess. There is a large crack where it looks like it has the most pressure has built up. I don't know if it is caused by the ground water around it, the area stays pretty wet for the most part. However, this pool is over 30 years old. We didn't have the water completely full from where the guy measured for the liner, but it wasn't anything different from how it set most of the winter (the pool place drained quite a bit of water when they winterized it). I have no idea how this happened. We knew not to drain it and purposefully didn't because we were afraid this would happen. Does anyone know if my homeowners insurance will cover this? I called my agent and they filed a claim. They said it would be covered under other structures, but the extent of coverage would be determined by the adjuster. I'm completely sick over this.

If I cancel my car insurance policy mid-term do I have to pay off the balance?

Rear-ended, didn't get contact info or file police report

    Posted: 28 May 2019 01:18 PM PDT

NJ- I was rear-ended a couple of weeks ago. I was in a big rush and when I got out of my car to check the damage, I didn't notice anything, so I didn't bother getting info from the driver or filing a police report. Later on I realized that there's a giant dent. It was lower down than I thought it would be, which is why I didn't notice it. Yes I know, I am a gigantic idiot. I'm trying to decide now whether to file a claim for the damage or not. The car is leased and I don't have a waiver covering damages. I have a few questions:

    1. Will my insurance company still consider me to not be at fault even though I don't have any info from the other party or a police report?
    2. They usually waive the policy deductible when people are rear-ended, though they won't confirm in advance whether they will or will not do so. Is there a chance they'd still waive my deductible in this case?
    3. I realize this might make my insurance premiums go up. It's likely that after my lease is up in a few months, I won't be owning or leasing another car for at least two years, so it might be worth it for me anyway. How long do accidents like this continue to affect my premiums?
    4. Is it worth it to just pay for repairs out of pocket instead of going through insurance? I expect they'll be expensive.

    Thanks!

    Renters Insurance

    Posted: 28 May 2019 01:11 PM PDT

My wife and I moved to another state and are renting our old house out for a year or two.

We currently have a property management company maintaining the property (bills are in their name, rent is paid to them, etc)

The PM company said we shouldn't have to worry about renters insurance, as the house still has insurance built into the payments when we got our mortgage.....

I'm just trying to figure out if we need renters insurance to cover anything the renters may do while we are not there....

Big thanks for taking time to reply!

    Camper Van Nightmare

    Posted: 28 May 2019 12:43 PM PDT

This is long, so sorry I'm advance. For background I live in California, and am 30 years old. I have a 2005 Sprinter van, built out as a camper using sports mobile parts (owner gutted another camper and transferred stuff over). I was rear ended bad, bent frame, doors smashed body panels bent.

Filed with other persons insurance (allstate) - they deemed it totaled. Came back with actual cash value (I expected this bc it's a "specialty vehicle") - requested CCC report. "comp" vehicles had no VIN, no addresses, and no phone numbers. They also are about 6-8k under value. The vehicles also did not have correct options (they were listed as 6 cylinder gas, that year sprinter was only produced as a 5 cyl diesel. The listed comps also were the wrong length, and one was even a ford. - I provide 4 other comps (3 of which a dealer listings), tell them the issues with the others, and why they should use mine instead. - they refuse my listings, because they are "higher than the market value established by our comps". And magically, their "comps" now are the correct configuration and trims, but same $. - at this point I'm annoyed, it's been 2 months. So I ask for CCC to run it as a sports mobile (that's the build out it has in it) - they send me back the same report. They say their SAME comps are the only comps and they don't change the value of the vehicle. Meanwhile I've sent them three more comps, all not included in their comparison bc "they are more than market value (MV established by their bs comps)" - entering 4 months since accident. I'm over it, want to settle, and want my van so I can gut it and move the gear into another one. I tell them they're 3K from what I'd ideally accept, but maybe we can figure that out with a reduced salvage buyback. They say the buyback is $9k! I called several salvage yards and they said 5k tops. - they're saying their 9k quote is a "guaranteed" quote (whatever that means) and "isn't negotiable"

    — how do I get this salvage number lowered?? It's more than 1/3 their "actual cash value" number for the vehicle.

—- do I need a lawyer to make headway here? —- should I make a complaint with the California Insurance board?

California insurance guidelines require Vin, phone, or address for comp vehicles. I pointed this out to CCC and they said "a manager has reviewed this and everything is in order". I have no way of verifying any of their comps, and they've changed them on two occasions to fit my complaints about them.

I spend an average of 3 hours on the phone every time I call, and have to take time out of a work day to talk to these people. It's driving me insane. Any help from an adjuster to work through this would be awesome.

Using my employer provided health insurance vs husband's employer provided insurance (HSA) OR keeping both plans? Is there any reason why having two plans would be NOT beneficial?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 08:54 AM PDT

I am 21 weeks pregnant, due to give birth in October. So obviously we want to do what we can to minimize our expenses, as we're expecting the L&D costs to max out our out of pocket expenses this year. Here's where I have questions...

    • I have an insurance plan provided at no out of pocket cost by my employer. I have a $750 deductible, followed by 20% co-insurance, and a $5,500 out of pocket max

    • My husband's company was just purchased, and they are offering new health plans beginning July 1. It is $97/mo to add me to the plan. They will add $2,000 per person to a HSA (so $2k if just my husband signs up, $4k if we both do). The plan has a $4k out of pocket max and 0% co-insurance, so essentially if we both sign up the plan becomes 100% free for covered, in-network healthcare expenses

So my question is twofold: First, I am assuming it is 100% worth it/logical to add me to his plan... just want to confirm this is correct in the event there's some insurance mumbo-jumbo we are not taking into consideration

Second.... is there any reason why I should cancel my employer provided coverage? Would having the second plan mess up the HSA plan or end up charging us for things that would have been covered if the HSA plan was primary? From what I understand my employer provided plan would be considered "primary" and I'm not able to change it under "coordination of benefits" at least that is what was implied by the information I found via Prof. Google.

So I guess my main question is, should I keep the plan I'm getting from my employer or is there a benefit to canceling it in this situation?
