For the past 6 months I have been running a Screen Printing side-hustle. I told myself when I started that it was to learn entrepreneurship, which I indeed have. Now it has become more about the money it provides me. All of my profit has been reinvested in equipment. Now my equipment is worth roughly $1k. However, my real dreams lie in the Artificial Intelligence industry. I want to build AI that drastically improve the quality of life for people. I have heard from many people that you should focus in on one thing. So now I am wondering. Should I quit Screen Printing and if so, what should I do with the equipment? My plan used to be to use the screen printing business to pay through a good amount of college, if I quit then I guess I'd have to get a job? I'm not super fond of that either. Can a product/service ever be too cheap? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:14 AM PDT I have a friend that is starting a web design business and they want to charge $25 a month to compete against sites like wix. The thought is to try and grow a large client base, but at $25 a month some people they have talked to said it makes it look too low quality and they wouldn't buy or stick around long enough to look at some examples sites they have built. So should they raise the price to like $40 a month? the package comes with hosting, ssl, web design, domain registration etc. IMO their sites are good quality, mobile friendly, seo optimized, and good design, but thought I would ask you guys what you thought about the pricing. My priority goals are to spend years building a staff and relationships. My end goal is to have this idea self sustaining to the point where I can direct my own news source and stories, travel the world covering stories and adventures, and lastly meeting many of my current and future idols through interviews and collaboration. I have been a lurker on this subreddit for awhile now, and would like to share my journey/struggles, and am searching for some advice. O and also, please let me know if I should not have posted this here, I will take it down right away. Here it goes. Ever since I was in about 8th grade, I have always known I wanted to start my own business, but as I have grown, I have come to the understanding I have absolutely NO idea on what type of business, and that is what I am coming to you guys for advice. I am at a complete loss on what direction I want to go in. Right now I am currently at a full time job which I do not enjoy at ALL. The office here is so disorganized it drives me a little crazy. They hired me as a Sales Representative, but now they expect me to Social Media Manage, manage their eCommerce store, manage their google analytics, answer phones sometimes, and organize a marketing strategy...for $15 an hour. At the start I was paid $13 an hour, with a promise of a significant raise and eventually an ownership of the company down the road. In my first 2 months of being here, I grew online sales by 10% (for a million dollar business which was going downhill). I was then given a raise of 2 dollars ($15/hr 35 hrs a week). This felt like a slap in the face as they made it seem to be I would be getting a huge raise because of what I have done. The owner of the company is extremely old, and has become senile and delusional. Shutting down new marketing strategies and re-branding ideas to be more new, wasting a ton of money by changing decisions last minute, and so on. Because of all of this, I have given up and just been going through the motions, and the company is going downhill. While having this full time job I also am Social Media Managing for another company remotely. This job I love. I have been involved in influencer marketing, paid advertising, and organic growth. I enjoy engaging with customers and answering any questions they have. The only problem is this job does not pay well as it is only a contracted job (not full time), and I definitely cannot live on this alone. I do love this job, but the owner of the company has been getting extremely busy and does not have time to get back to me in a timely manner, which kind of ties my hands on doing things. I am also creating a Snapchat paid advertising educational course for a company. This pays well but is also a short contracted job with an affiliate opportunity once launched. While having jobs, I have also created an eCommerce store to figure that side of the internet out, ran a couple ad campaigns as short term contracted jobs, and created a website for a power washing business. So now a little bit about me as a person. I absolutely love customer engagement and have 3+ years in customer service. I love talking to people, figuring out what makes them tick, answering questions for them, etc... I am an extremely personable guy and I just love to help people out. I think that is why I like marketing and Social Media Managing so much. Creating a marketing plan to sell to people seems really easy to me as I have a decent EQ and can tell why people do certain things. Social Media Managing is just fun to me. I enjoy replying to people's comments and posts in a fun way. Also figuring out how to post a little outside the box to garner engagement. O, and I also love Public Speaking. I am fairly tech savy. I have a good amount of knowledge in Social Media advertising within FB/IG/SC/Adwords, and I know my way around google analytics. I also know how to build eCommerce websites and manage them. My hobbies include: Gaming, snowboarding, sports, and cars. I also am getting married May 11th, so all this has kinda been piling up and I am now looking for some outside advice on a road to go down (my soon to be wife is completely supportive of anything I do). I would love to run my own business, but I am not sure where to start and what business to build. I am moving to the Midwest next January, so it would have to either be an online business, or something easily movable. I am not looking for any "get rich quick" programs or any of that bullshit. I am just looking for some genuine advice as I feel a little lost. So my main question is this. What advice would you give me on a business I should start, or remote work I should look in to, and how should I go about accomplishing this? I am just completely out of ideas. I have a software engineering background and I tried to use Scrum/Agile techniques to manage my project but I kept coming up with issues as a lot of software is not made for this type of project. Because of my engineering background, I have decided to build a platform to address the pain points I faced as this is not the last house project I will encounter. Go Givers Sell More - compressing a 160 page book into 4 quick pages of notes Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:46 AM PDT My parents recently went traveling in Vietnam and Laos and they met a couple that owns a really successful recruiting agency. They said one book, called Go Givers Sell More, made a huge impact. Since I am building a recruiting agency I figured that I should read it. The book really resonated with my experience, especially now that I am doing a ton of sales and cold outreach. Here are my notes. I did my best to compress a 160 page book into 4 pages of notes. So if anything is vague or cryptic just ask. Here are my notes. The basic premise of the book is that you have to give value in order to receive. If your goal in sales is to create value for other people, how do you do that? Here are five ways: excellence, consistency, attention, empathy, and appreciation.
With these five value-generating activities, it's not formulaic that if you perform X acts of appreciation you will get Y sales in return. You give because it's who you are and therefore what you do. The only way to get more is to continuously give away these acts of value and eventually repayment will emerge. But if you go about creating value with the ulterior motive of receiving more value, it tends to show through on some level and sabotage the result. Give without emotional attachment to the return -- knowing confidently that there will be return. If someone approaches you to do business but we know for their purpose that a competitor would be better, we make a referral. Our focus is on providing value for the customer. Psychology: in order to become givers, we willingly suspend our self-interest. We don't erase or deny it; we simply set it aside for a moment so we can gain emotional access to the full experience of the Law of Value. Providing more value than you receive in payment is the trade secret of all exceptional businesses. Rapport formula: F-O-R-M. Family, Occupation, Recreation, Message. Conversations that meander along these topics will strike a vein of connection and rapport. Quick rapport rules:
Rapport can be as subtle as honoring a person's native tongue or expressing your genuine mutual interests. It's about being human. Going to the trouble of getting someone's name right is one of the simplest gestures of respect there is -- and mispronouncing, mangling, or misremembering another's name is one of the surest ways to offend. Remember to keep your focus on providing value for the other person. When you feel uncomfortable on a call, you are thinking about yourself. Emotional maturity is the ability to keep your focus on others' feelings even as you acknowledge and honor your own. The essence of professionalism, is showing up for work even when you don't feel like it. Feelings and moods come and go. There may be times when you don't really feel you're interested in this other person, don't feel like creating value for them, or don't feel like being friendly. That's okay. Take the action anyway. Genuine influence accrues to those who become known as the sort of person who is committed to helping other people get what they want. Approach each business relationship with; What have I done for you lately? Give credit away rather than seek it; be kingmakers rather than kings; be constantly on the lookout for ways they can help to elevate other people's lives. All things being equal, people will do business with and refer business to those people they know, like, and trust. Key aspect of likeability: great grooming. Pay attention to it daily, even when working remotely. It shines through in your voice and subtle mannerisms, even through text. The majority of your best customers will come from people you vaguely know: not exactly friends but not exactly strangers. The teller at your bank; your kids' friends' moms, and so forth. Improve weak ties. The philosophy for attending meetups: just making friends. Why? To make friends. Don't mention our service at all. How to make the perfect meetup pitch? Don't. Your aim is to have fun and make friends. Go for quality, not quantity. And don't pitch. Instead, ask great questions:
Meetups must be accompanied by followthrough.
A feature is about our service. A benefit is about the other person. If someone asks, what do you do? That describes the benefits people derive from doing business with you. You cannot "make a sale". What you can do is create value. People will do what people will do. All you can do is seek to serve, look for ways to create value… and trust. Emotional clarity is your understanding of the difference between your economic need (which is real) and your emotional need for this person to be the solution to that economic need. Emotional discipline is your ability to hold onto that clarity and consistently choose your responses to each situation, rather than acting impulsively. The combination of clarity and discipline is posture: stepping into the truth of who you are and the value you have to offer, without emotional attachment to any specific outcome. There's not a lot riding on the outcome for you… but there could be for them. Whenever a prospect brings up your competitor, go out of your way to say something nice about him or her because respect earns respect. Authenticity is not something you seek or take on; it's something you simply embrace. Being whole means your words and actions are not separate: you do what you say. Keep your focus on: Who is this person? What do they want? What are they searching for? What is the single most valuable thing I could possibly offer them? Remember, it's not about you; it's about them. There is forceful assertion and bravado (bad) and there is the simple statement of fact that springs from the quiet stillness of authenticity. If someone objects to a pitch, turn in the direction of the skid. Agree with what they said. "Certainly something to consider" and "I get what you're saying" are ways of being with the person rather than jousting. When you say "That's a great question" or "That's a good point" and then join with them to examine the issue they raised, you let them know it's welcome and appreciated. The only way to say that authentically is to genuinely see it as a great point. The underlying goal is to create value for the other person. Things we say to help take the pressure off, so they can feel more relaxed about making the right decision:
The flip side of giving value is letting yourself receive. If you don't let yourself receive, you're refusing the gifts of others -- and you shut down the flow. Focus on creating value in the world around you and for the people around you, and the greatest opportunities will come to you in moments and from places you never expected. How do you get people to trust you? By being a trusting person. Living in trust means that having made your plan, you put it fully into action, investing it with excellence, consistency, attention, empathy, and appreciation. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:11 PM PDT Here's the gist of it: I will give the players their first clue via email. When they figure the clue out, they will physically go to the first clue location. When they get there - that's where I'm getting stuck. If I leave a physical clue for them to "find", then only one person would be able to find it, and subsequent players will have nothing to find and their game would be over. If I leave something like a QR code somewhere, then it would be visible to everyone, making the "hunt" a moot point. If I lead them to a historical plaque in a park or something like that, I could make the clue a cipher, and if they solve it, they could get a specific word that they could pop into an online form on their phone which would tell them their next clue... that one has the most potential right now, but if I do it as a cipher, then I would have to do that for all of the clues, and using the same cipher over and over isn't very fun. There's no challenge to figure them out. It has to be fun if it's going to be successful. I'd love it if you could throw out some suggestions about how to get them from one clue to the next. Ideas? I've built a pretty solid brand and am having a LOT of success right now. I basically coach people in a specific industry and they pay me for access to me. It may sound odd, but hey, it works lol The only problem is scaling. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas of how I can scale this without hiring more people? Is there any automation tools you can think of? I am really trying to stay away from "courses" if at all possible. Meaning that 4 feet people could hire me and I would show them what they were interested in on the darkweb whether it be chemical substances services legal illegal whatever they wished. Someone mentioned that I should use the skills that I already possess and I'm very very familiar with the dark web I've been on it off and on constantly for the last 11 years and I'm very familiar with the forms and the market I thought I might charge a set fee for someone to hire me and ask a question in from their charge by the hour to complete whatever service it was they are interested in. Studying legalities of Company products and Patents Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:41 AM PDT Hi reddit, I am fairly new to the legal side of things companies work around on a daily basis with products. So please forgive my ignorance, and please let me know if this is not exactly for this sub, just wasnt quite sure were to post this kind of question. But here we go, For example: Samsung was the first company that I personally seen release and market wireless chargers a few years ago, now you see them everywhere from sweaty cheap units to high end quality ones. Question 1: How does Samsung deal with issues such as the unit malfunctioning and burning a plug up, to actually sparking a fire in their customers homes? My wife's charger actually shorted out and burnt the plug and well as the dresser it was sitting on. House is fairly new and was built in 2006, completely up to code wiring and so forth. Unit was used as instructed, nothing more nothing less. Not saying that we are going to sue Samsung by any means, shit happens. But for instance a customer would want to take legal action, how does Samsung protect themselves? Question 2: I would assume Samsung holds some type of patent on their wireless chargers and from the Samsung chargers we have, and a few of the not so great quality ones that were bought after my wife's bit the dust, there is absolutely no difference in how the unit looks (besides the branding of course). Both units are the exact same shape, height and roughly the same wieght, now I would assume the inside materials are probably different, but the process of charging a phone wirelessly is pretty standard from what I can understand. How does the smaller companies mass produce and sell 10s of thousands of units without some type of lawsuit from Samsung by infringing on, again ASSUME, is their patenting? Thinking about starting my own company Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:01 AM PDT Hey everyone, longtime lurker and first time posting so bear with me. I have a company idea that I would love to receive critique for. I'm thinking about creating a custom van company (_I know, really_). This idea started from a family friend purchasing a customized Sprinter Van for $145k from a prestigious local custom van shop. On top of the high price, their wait list is currently almost a year long, they just moved into a new multiple thousand square foot warehouse/factory, and the local media is currently catching on (article). I know that the success of one company isn't indicative for jumping into a market, but there are other signals pointing to possible new entrants. From initial research, the market for recreational vans and smaller RV vehicles/trailers is growing at an abnormally fast rate. While I imagine it might be caused by the economic expansion and I'm not sure how the industry will survive in a downturn, at least currently, the industry demand seems to be written on the wall in plain sight. My father comes from a career in construction and we've built a handful of custom cargo trailers for friends over the years. The actual construction of the vans doesn't seem to be too complex, as they are normally fitted with numerous aftermarket parts and most designs are very utilitarian. Establishing contacts for upholstery and fabrication work would be required, but I do not see that as a large hurdle, at least initially. If we assume that I would be able to carve out an innovative design and brand appeal to differentiated myself in the space, it seems like a fairly scale able and reduced risk business model. The margins appear to be rather large (speculating at around 10-20%), small unit counts, and the market seems to be begging for new entrants that can produce comparable products for a growing and rather price insensitive customer base. I'm a bit unsure on how to begin. A proof of concept or first customized van seems like an obvious first step, at least to find a first couple of initial customers. An initial bout of marketing to establish the start of the brand would likely set ourselves apart from the "wife and I" one-off customized vans. This likely could be done with personal financing, and non of the manufacturing equipment needs to be purchased (we own a fully functional manufacturing shop), but I wouldn't want to crunch pennies for the first concept. Basically, if I am going to give it a go, I want to make the first product right and not cut corners. This leads me to think about financing, but it might be tough to convince a bank for financing. All that said, I can't forsee crazy lucrative cash flows compared to other business ideas. The idea is very much built around a customized business model, so by nature it's very limited on expansion. I dont find this entirely disheartening, simply because it would be my first experience with starting a company, likely as I will continue to work my current job which gives me the ability to test out new ideas (analyst at regional bank).
