    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Apr 30, 2019

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

Looking for some opinions on Chegg ($CHGG) as it dropped heavily around 10% today and whether it’s a good buy right now or a simple pull back from recent rally’s?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:15 PM PDT

It dropped nearly 10% today and they hold a near monopoly on textbook solutions and nearly every college student I know is subscribed to it in some form or another. They are also very hot on taking down replica sites that steal their solutions and have took down both textbook solutions and another one this year strikes against them. So I believe it to have great value long term and a potential great entry point. What are some of your opinions?

Deep Sea Oil drilling stocks (ESV, RIG, DO, etc)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:03 AM PDT

The entire sector is getting destroyed, ESV, RIG, DO, SDRL, all down >9% etc. With the rise of fracking, global slowdown, and OPEC still flooding the market (Even though they claim to not do it), are these easy shorts to the bottom of the barrel? (pun intended).

Looking to get into options since I don’t want to risk a lot of capital.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:14 PM PDT

Right move? I have been researching options trading and it seems a better deal than regular trading. What have your experiences been like? Obviously I don't expect every trade to be a winner but I was looking for either a good book to read on it or some advice from people who have been at it a while. Thanks

AMD Stock spikes after Q1 2019

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:05 PM PDT

Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s stock surged in the extended session Tuesday after the chip maker topped Wall Street estimates for the quarter.

"We look forward to the upcoming launches of our next-generation 7nm PC, gaming and datacenter products which we expect to drive further market share gains and financial growth," CEO Lisa Su said in the earnings release.

" The company reported first-quarter net income of $16 million, or 1 cent a share, compared with $81 million, or 8 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Adjusted earnings were 6 cents a share. Of the 28 analysts surveyed by FactSet, AMD on average was expected to post adjusted earnings of 5 cents a share.

Revenue declined to $1.27 billion from $1.65 billion in the year-ago quarter. Wall Street expected revenue of $1.26 billion from AMD, according to 28 analysts polled by FactSet.

"We delivered solid first quarter results with significant gross margin expansion as Ryzen and EPYC processor and datacenter GPU revenue more than doubled year-over-year," said Lisa Su, AMD's president and chief executive, in a statement. "We look forward to the upcoming launches of our next-generation 7nm PC, gaming and datacenter products which we expect to drive further market share gains and financial growth."

The company said that its year-over-year revenue decline was "primarily due to lower graphics channel sales, partially offset by increased client processor and datacenter GPU sales."

Computing and graphics sales declined to $831 million from $1.12 billion in the year-ago quarter. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected computing and graphics sales to decline 23% to $855.7 million from the year-ago quarter.

Enterprise, embedded and semi-custom sales declined to $441 million from $532 million in the year-ago period. Analysts expected $410.2 million.

For the second quarter, AMD expects revenue of $1.47 billion to $1.57 billion, while analysts expect revenue of $1.51 billion."

Where Can We Find EPS Immediately?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:54 PM PDT

As the title states, where can we see the EPS immediately after it's released? Sometimes I find it 10-15 minutes after it's already been released through other financial news outlets and I've already lost tons of money by then.

    AAPL earnings

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:29 AM PDT

Apple is 13% of my portfolio and am holding it for the long term so I'll be listening to earnings call. Anybody else listening to Apple earnings? I caught last quarters as well. What's everyones expectation? Stale iPhone sales? Increased focus on healthcare, wearables and ecosystem expansion? China? The Apple card? Any chance the stock goes 10%+ in either direction?

Bought the new IPO pintrest stock when it first came out at $23.82 and after a week of steady climbing to a max of around $35.60 I ended up selling it before it plummeted to $30 today, was that a smart move? Or should I rebuy them when they get a bit cheaper and hope for them to climb again? Only 1 week on the market

    Diversifying my Roth IRA

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:51 AM PDT

So I have had my Roth IRA since 2014 and own about 350 shares of SWPPX (Schwab S&P 500 Index). I was set up a while back on Schwab and there are no transaction fees so I just always put money into that for my retirement. Should I just keep building that up, or would it be worth diversifying it a bit and putting money into another index? If so, are there any recommended ones?

    Options Question...

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:19 AM PDT

Hello Folks. Let me apologize in advance if I misstate anything. I am an options rookie and trying to learn. Maybe it is best to pose my question as a scenario:

ABC current share price is $9. I believe by July 20 it will be $12. I presume I would Buy Call options to this effect, correct? What I do not understand is the notion of "Break Even" etc. To keep it simple, I win if the stock reaches $12 on or before July 20, right? What are some other things I need to consider? One other question, if the option is $0.10, this would be times 100, or $10? Is any more money at risk than my $10? I just want to dip a toe in the pool, not try and swim across the channel...

Global Average chart pricing on Trading View

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:15 AM PDT

Hello, I was wondering if on Trading View, there's a way to combine multiple prices from different exchanges into a single global average price? For example, I'd like to chart a certain currency, however I can't figure out how to combine all the various prices from the list of exchanges into one price. This currency has like 9 exchanges listed on Trading View. Or is there a way I can search something in the ticker box and manual combine exchanges myself?

Also, is there any way I can copy and paste all my charts and designs from one chart to another, rather than redo everything from scratch?

    Thanks for your time :)
