Combined daily & themed posts for r/Stocks and new time! + today's Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 04:11 AM PDT

I updated our 3 themed posts so that they're combined with the daily discussion. This way we're not cutting off the daily conversation with the themed conversations and gives more time to the theme.

Another thing I did was set the post to launch at 3am eastern (4am during daylight savings), this gives our stock traders & investors in the rest of the world (Australia, Europe, and anyone who speaks English) time to post comments related to stocks and participate in the themes while also making sure it doesn't start too early for our users on the west coast (12am & 1am pacific time respectively).

I know this will single out Alaska, for example Monday's daily discussion post will start Sunday at 11pm & 12am Alaska time and Hawaii 9pm & 10pm Hawaii time, so the best I can say is sorry, but I'm sure you guys are used to it already.

Sorry to everyone in Australia, Europe and anyone who speaks English who participated in the these daily & themed posts and never got any responses, now the new time will solve that issue.

Thanks to everyone who have participated in the past and who make r/Stocks a serious, helpful, and informative place to discuss stocks.

I know I posted this late for Australia, but for everyone else who is awake, here's today's daily discussion & fundamentals Friday:

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

backtesting the V bottom. historical anomaly

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 01:30 PM PDT

have you guys given much thought to this SPX - V bottom since december? i mean it's been a hell of a ride up but it's also never happened in recorded history without an eventual double bottom type scenario. march 1980 was the closest example i could find but nov 79 was the first leg down to the 200 week sma.

never in recorded history have we visited the 200 week with this sort of result which currently is great for the 401k but also quite alarming since economies don't turn on dimes. without getting too conspiracy with trump manipulation etc have any of you came up with a rational thesis for this situation ?

    Predicting drops?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 01:51 PM PDT

So, I see it constantly every day. I look at top movers, and there's always a new stock that's dropped over 20%. Now, what I want to know is.. is it possible to predict these huge drops if you're following those certain stocks? Is it somehow possible to buy a put on those stocks just a day or so before they drop? I noticed that quite often the reasoning behind the drop is somewhat related to the quarterly earnings call. Do I just look up all upcoming earnings and try to research the ones that aren't doing well? Any input would be amazing

Job with EMCO upcoming - Profit Sharing Program - Stock has Plummeted

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 09:07 AM PDT

Well into the Interview process and I'm very confident in getting the position within the EMCO Ltd. company specifically in their Oil & Gas Division. I looked into the company, all seems well the pay backs on their profit sharing all looked good according to Glass Door in passed years but when I looked at the EMCO stock price it has completely tanked in the last 5 years and even more so since 2008. I understand the recession would hit an Oil & gas Supplier hard but going from $70-80 spiking up to $300 before 2008 then down to $30, and continuing down now to $3.65 in 2019 having only gone down is this something to be worried about with the company going bankrupt? They've been under $30 plenty of times hovering around 15 for years but this is an all time low for them so I'm surprised they're even dishing out positions.

Maybe I'm reading into the stock price too much, there are 6 or 7 offices in my city of different branches/divisions of EMCO. I know our main customer is a well off Company that has been around forever and is quite business savvy so I don't see them running out of business where we are or closing the office (it's not huge but we mainly service one big customer)

Anyone have experience with similar? Thanks.

Current portfolio, any advice is HIGHYL appreciated!

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 10:19 AM PDT

Currently have $12k cash that I am looking to invest. My current thought process / stock picks are as follows:

    11 FB shares ($1925) - 16.5% 7 TSLA shares ($1890) - 16.5% 62 AT&T shares ($1984) - 16.5% 12 CRM shares ($1908) - 16.5%

2k in 4 different spec stocks that I am still trying to decide on (looking at ACB, ELF, ELY, BILI, etc) - 16.5%

Hold 2k cash in order to lower cost basis if needed. 16.5%

I will also be adding around 1.5k - 2k per month onto my account as well.

Any thoughts, opinions, concerns are highly appreciated as I am relatively new to investing!

    Good day/bad day

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 12:28 PM PDT

A good day is checking your portfolio and seeing the trade you made 4 days ago is up 10%.

A bad day is realizing that if you'd bought it 5 days ago you'd be up even more and/or regretting you didn't buy more.

Buy ETFs now or wait Brexit/Recession?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 08:40 AM PDT

Hi Stock fellows! I have a bulk of money that i want to invest in ETFs. If you were me guys, what would you do? Should I: 1- invest now the whole bulk. 2- invest on a period of time (6 months for example). 3- wait and see if the Brexit will trigger a recession then invest. I know the answer if this question is not easy. But i am interested to see how you guys see this period of time from an investor point of view. Thanks!

Is Chipotle overpriced? I don’t understand its valuation.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 02:38 PM PDT

Can anyone shed light as to why chipotle has the PE ratio magnitudes higher than any company in its industry? Every time I look at the stock I feel that it's going to plummet at any moment. It seems the value of the stock is based on its future growth potential and that makes sense for an up and coming tech company, but does Chipotle really have such a huge upside in its future?

    Ethics of buying stocks?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 08:05 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I am very new to trading - but I have a question about the ethics of buying stock. Yesterday I bought stock in Alibaba, but my partner told me that this was unethical because of the nature of the Chinese government, and the treatment of employees. He compared this to buying stock in businesses that were involved with Nazi Germany. Is this something you ever think about/what do you think of this? I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, so I apologize if it's not!

    Gold and Silver stocks

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 06:09 AM PDT

In preparation of the potential recession, I want to start to shift some of my portfolio and potentially add more position towards gold and silver. Are there any good recommended tickers for gold or silver?

Where can I find each Weeks Winners and Losers?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 05:58 AM PDT

Does anyone have a good resource to find each week's winners and losers when it comes to stocks? I'm trying to compile a list of stocks that have performed the best and the worst each week. I didn't know if there was a place to see a list of these stocks on a weekly basis.

    Thanks for any assistance.

is this accurate? forward P/E of -189 seems like an error? and most PEG ratios are happy to be lower than -1. SPOT PEG ratio is at -3. what is with this companies numbers?

    Best weed stocks?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 03:27 AM PDT

I believe that the weed market has a lot of room to go up with a global push for legalization for medical use and recreational use.

I already have some of Tilray's stock (I was stupid money and bought at over $100. I averaged it a few days ago, and I'm not too concerned about recent drops. This is a long hold.)

I'm curious about other companies though. Canopy Growth produced the most crop the last quarter, but their EPS is horrible.
Aurora produced more than Tilray, and is actually profitable.

    What are your thoughts?

    Edit: fixed some wrong names
