    The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho's bestselling book has sold over 65 million copies and translated into more than 56 languages.

    The Premise Of The Book

The underlying principle in Paulo Coelho's book, The Alchemist, is a dedicated desire to work towards your aims."

The book tells the story of Santiago, a young shepherd boy who sets out on a personal quest to Egypt to find his "personal legend." As he ventures out on his quest for personal greatness, the journey fast becomes an adventure full of challenges and obstacles the shepherd boy must face and triumph over if he is to attain his personal legend/greatness.

"It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting."

    Paulo Coelho

The Protagonist in the Alchemist is very relatable.

If you're interested in this book you can get 2 audiobooks for free with a trial of audible using the link in the description of this video. Subscribe and turn on the notification bell so you don't miss any future summaries.

Here are the main lessons learned from reading and implementing the principles taught in the Alchemist:

Lesson 1: Pursue The Desires Of Your Heart And Soul

"And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."

    Paulo Coelho

Most of us spend our lives waiting for the right time to act. Well, the right time to act is right now. If you fail to take consistent action towards your purpose, your utmost aim, you will never achieve your desire because there is no right time; life will always get in the way. Pursuing your heart's desire with some urgency is the most significant lesson taught in Paulo Coelho's book The Alchemist.

"It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting."

    Paulo Coelho

According to The Alchemist, when you are not pursuing your desires, following your dreams, or doing what you were put on this earth to do, the chances of fulfilling your personal legend are slim to none.

In each of us lies a seed of passion: the passion to experience certain things, to do certain things, and to live life a certain way. If you are not following your heart, if you are not listening to it and answering to its call, you are keeping yourself from living the best life possible.

Lesson 2: Accept Failure As Part Of The Process/Journey

Fear of failure is very relatable, something we have all experienced at one point or the other. Our personal legend, what we want to do or achieve with our lives, manifests in the form of a grand goal or vision. When you allow the fear of failure to take root in your spirit, it keeps you from pursuing and achieving your personal legend.

Do not let fear of failure keep you from pursuing and achieving your dreams and aims. As Coelho notes:

"There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure."

    Paulo Coelho

Constantly remind yourself of where you are right now, where you want to go, and why it is important that you get there. When you do this, when you are consistently working to better your life and yourself, the universe will conspire to help you actualize and achieve your dreams:

"Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity."

    Paulo Coelho

Always remind yourself that everything worth having has a price. Are you willing to pay that price? Only those who are willing to pay the price, to risk it all, to act in the face of fear of failure, achieve their aims and dreams.

Always listen to your heart, to the dream it holds dear and near, and then actively dedicate your daily life to pursuing your dream. The universe will reward you immensely.

"The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times"

    Paulo Coelho

Lesson 3: Take Consistent Action; It Is Secret To All Learning

Tony Robbins is fond of saying, "knowledge is not power. It is potential power. Execution will trump knowledge any day."

If you are not taking action towards fulfilling your personal legend, you will never fulfill it no matter how much you learn or know. Action is the secret sauce to all forms of success.

"There is only one way to learn. It's through action."

    Paulo Coelho

The importance of taking consistent action towards the fulfillment of your dreams is one of the most important lessons gleaned from reading and implementing the principles taught in The Alchemist.

True to this, you can study as much as you want, and seek advice from the best the world has ever known, but if you are not taking action, if you are aiming but not pulling the trigger, yours will be a case of unexploited potential, which you do not want. You do not want to go to the grave with your potential still unfulfilled; the regret is just too painful.

    Conclusion

Discover your purpose and actively pursue it every day. That is the only way to achieve personal greatness.

    A $7.6 Trillion-Dollar Industry

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 01:49 PM PDT

I think the majority of us are here for ideas and inspiration, right? We like to read about successful people and figure out how we can apply that to our lives. Sometimes we find gems, usually we find trash, often we're just blinded or uninterested.

Well, I'm here to wake some people up.

A few days ago I listened to this amazing podcast from Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn, Paypal, .etc) and he was interviewing Brian Chesky the founder of AirBnB on his early days and how he scaled the company. Not only was it fascinating to hear how they started, and how they almost failed and came up with an ingenious political cereal idea to help fund the company (Obama O's, Cap'n McCain's) ...one number really stuck out.

    $7,000,000,000,000.00

That's right. In between talking about their business model, funding and growing a billion-dollar company, Brian shot out a number as to why he chose the travel industry, it generates over $7 trillion dollars per year. Actually, $7.6t.

So my question to you is, why fight over a $10b industry when you can take a small piece of a nearly $8 trillion dollar industry?

Scared of the competition? Don't be a pussy. Competition means there's money, my people. You have a better chance of getting rich in a big industry vs. a smaller niche industry, it's simple math. More money to go around.

Even cooler? You probably have a great shot at acquisition by some of the big public players that are looking to grow. The Pricelines, the Expedias.

Excited yet? Let's get more hyped, shall we?

There are four segments of the hospitality industry:

    • Food and beverages
    • Travel and Tourism
    • Lodging
    • Recreation

Within these segments you have unlimited options, and I truly mean unlimited. Let's break just some of these down.

1.) Food & Beverages: Many of you might be saying, what? But F&B is actually the largest hospitality segment there is and, well, why wouldn't it be considering literally everyone needs to eat! If you think about how it ties into the travel industry you have everything from airport food, carts at events, F&B for hotels, hotel bars, distribution.

Yes, it's rather generic, but think about how it applies to the travel industry. What could you do? Become a vendor near a tourist destination? Open up an American bar in France? A French bar in America? Supply healthy snacks to hotels?

Doesn't sound like fun? What about starting an event for the F&B industry? Or a website dedicated to connecting people in the F&B industry. A blog that helps people get ideas for the F&B industry.

    Use your imagination.

2.) Travel & Tourism: This is massive, and what everyone thinks of when they think of travel, right? You may not be able to build the next airlines, or have a billion dollars laying around to start a cruise ship or space tourism business - but there's nothing stopping you from catering to these companies, or inventing a tour of your own.

Let's take a look at some of the verticals within travel and tourism.

    Travel

    • Airfare
    • Cruises
    • Transportation

    Tourism

    - Agencies

    - Tours

If you had a pen and paper and sat down for an hour you could probably come up with 100 business ideas for each one of these verticals.

    • Flight tracking
    • Cruise packages
    • Uber/Lyft
    • Travel Agency For Pet Owners
    • Pet Destinations
    • Sex tours
    • Cannabis tours
    • Adventure tours
    • Cruise tours
    • Tours For Young People
    • Tours For Old People
    • Vegas tours
    • Grand Canyon Tours
    • NYC tours
    • Maps to the stars
    • Party bus
    • Airport shuttle

    ...Dude, it's limitless.

Oh, and each one of these ideas still needs an F&B source attached to it!

    • Coffee supplier for travel agencies (B2B MRR!)
    • Natural snacks for adventure tours

    and on and on.

    3.) Lodging

This is where AirBnB staked their claim. They wanted to own the whole damn vertical, but you don't have to be so greedy. You can take just a little bit if you want. Here are some ideas.

    • AirBnB photographer
    • AirBnB host
    • AirBnB house cleaner
    • Bed & Breakfast
    • Vacation lodge
    • Vacant hotel room booking system
    • Website that helps people find all types of lodging discounts
    • sell bedding to hotels
    • sell F&B to hotels

Yet another rabbit hole, huh? There's easily 500 businesses you can pull out of this, local or worldwide.

This brings us to the last segment...

    4.) Recreation

There's definitely some overlap between tourism and recreation, but that's fine. The whole industry kind of overlaps and runs in a sequence. You can't really have one without the other.

So, recreation. There's got to be 1,000's of opportunities here because you can break this down into tours, sporting events, film, music, festivals and pretty much any activity you can dream of.

Think about what you do, or want to do when you travel.

    • Sightseeing: This overlaps with transportation, tours and sometimes lodging. All kinds of offshoot niches here. From creating the tour, to booking the tour, to guiding the tour, to hosting the tour.
    • Sporting Events: If it's played with a ball, there's a cottage industry behind it. Think about all of the side businesses for stadiums, tickets (buying/selling/scalping), finding discounts, merchandise, F&B, security, cleaning, .etc.
    • Nature: Maybe you want to enjoy the beach, you could take a taxi, or an Uber, or walk. You'll probably need clothing, too, huh? Maybe sunscreen? Are you going to eat today? Those shoes look pretty tired. Did you forget sandals? I'm sure you'd like this umbrella, or these delicious natural snacks for your hike. Oh, shit. Look, they're parasailing off the boat! Damn, that zipline looks fun, too. Let's get a t-shirt to remember this and drop $100 on a seafood themed dinner.

Alright, I'm going to cut this short because I have to get back to a business that makes me actual money! I just wanted to drop some inspiration here, and honestly writing all of this out helps motivate me too.

The hospitality/Travel industry is massive. I'm lazy, you're probably lazy - most of us are lazy, but we could all make 6 or 7 figures in this industry if we just grabbed an idea and ran with it.

Should I start a WordPress Maintenance Service???

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 10:51 AM PDT

I'm thinking of setting up a WordPress Maintenance Service in the UK for residents of Britain.

I see websites such as WPBuffs booming with their market share ever-expanding - read this article on IndieHacker.

Do you think this is a too competitive market to enter?

Would I be silly about making the company UK based and not looking at other demographic markets? - I want to be able to sustain my own support for my clients, and not hire out if possible.

I've been using WordPress for over 5 years now, and know some potential clients. It's something I've been thinking of launching for a while now, should I just do it??

Making the product before selling it to my client

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 01:15 AM PDT

I have a business relationship with a client for almost 10 years now. We've developed many ecommerce websites and making maintenance on those that we built so far. The client doesn't keep up with the new web technologies, so I want to start implementing for him PWA for one of the biggest ecommerce he has. The store has like 90% of the customers from mobile. And the current mobile version is pretty slow and outdated.

Me and my team started working on the PWA without letting the client know. I'm pretty sure a PWA version for his store will increase sales and costumers with more than 30%.

    Don't know what to do:

    1. Let the client know on benefits of PWA and the costs. I have the feeling that he won't agree cause he thinks his business can't increase more in sales. Believe me, his ecommerce makes tons of sells.
    2. Build it without the client know and make him a good surprise then let him know the costs
    3. Make it, show it, then tell him he will pay me after 1-2 months when he will see sale increase.

What are your thoughts on this?

How do we choose the right b2c product name?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 08:15 AM PDT

Our business targets 20-50 year olds who drink in the Netherlands. We are in a pre-development phase and are in talk with investors. At the moment we are iterating our product name for a B2C product. From our validations focusing on the Dutch market we came up with, for referring purposes: 'X' .

However my co-founders insist that although they do like the name, the worst thing you can do is to rebrand the product if you are going international. Due to demand, we are confident that going international is definitely an option in the future.

    Here is the problem though:

From the validations we have gotten so far 'X' is the name with the most positive responses. Often we get follow ups where they (consumers) would ask where they can buy it. However 'X' is a name that only sticks with Dutch people. If you would say it in English the name isn't the same and it loses its power.

I believe in capturing one market first. If that's a success , we start completely over again I.e. keep the name 'X' in the Netherlands but call the product 'Y' abroad.

My co-founders' argument is to start with a name 'Y' even though we haven't come up with a name that is as powerful as 'X' for the Netherlands. Our base is the Dutch market. Am I off in focusing on a (smaller) market first? If not, how do I persuade my co-founders?

    What do you guys recommend?

Is there a market for writing business plans for a living?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 06:46 AM PDT

I am a freelance writer but have never written business plans for other businesses. I wrote business plans as projects while I was still studying but never thought of it was an actual business idea.

I recently helped a friend with his business plan and felt that it was pretty easy and the material came to me naturally. I understand the research involved in creating bplans and also have experience with copywriting. So it wasn't too tough.

So my question is, is there a market for something like this? And more importantly, how does one go about validating the demand?

    Thanks a lot!

Curious about how to get a webapp idea off the ground, where to start, etc?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 12:42 PM PDT

Hey guys, I know this is probably a broad question(s) so bear with me.

I've got an idea for a web app idea, and want to talk to some developers to figure out where to start. I'm a designer and can help with design and marketing.

Most searching online is just articles and how to become your own developer, but what I want to know is the best way to create a team/entice a developer.

I'd like to be able to eventually create a kickstarter but I need to know a few things:

    • Do I need to get money and investments before the kickstarter campaign in order to hire a developer for Kickstarter materials?

    • If so, what are ways to get that money for just the initial idea? Will it just be out of pocket?

    • If not needed, is it possible or recommended to promise a percentage of profit to the developer who believes in the app but understands there's no money in it until the Kickstarter starts making money?

How would you monetize a blog and a podcast about a niche, mostly academic topic?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 12:39 PM PDT

So I'm incredibly passionate about a niche, mostly academic topic. Not a lot of people know about it (hence why it is niche), but I really want to dive deep into it and do podcasts/interviews with people working on the topic (mostly people in academia) and see why they work on the topic/think that the topic is relevant.

I want to emphasize that I am incredibly excited about this topic and would love to do it.

My question - How can I monetize the blog/podcast? Now you could say "Don't do it for the money if you love it" and that is 100% true; however, thinking long-term if I could somehow make money off of it that would be awesome. The only thing that pops into my head right now is AdSense, but quite possibly there are other ways.

The value the readers/listeners would get is more insight into this topic.

    Am looking for suggestions.

What do you do when you and your business partner completely disagree?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 12:13 PM PDT

Just as the title says. For example, My business partner and I make decisions together on ordering inventory from vendors. Most of the time it's pretty smooth as we know each other's strengths for each vendor but sometimes when it comes down to quantity and being more experimental that's when we disagree.

We both have had track records of making good decisions and there were sometimes when we were both wrong. Recently we were placing an order and I suggested we only get 2 units of one style and 1 unit of the other style. He suggested we order 7 in total and I just did not see the point. We had some disagreement and conversation about it but sometimes I don't have the patience of just seeing it completely through so I just gave up on it cause we needed to move onto more important things. This was just one small example.

Basically what happened was we never sold any of them so now we are stuck with this inventory.

How do you and your business partners make decisions when neither of you agrees?

How do I stand out with a stock market website?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 08:14 AM PDT

I have proven success in the stock market and would like to make some kind of personal career out of it. I wan't to start a website, but I'm not really sure where to start. It seems like financial services are so saturated online, but I do believe that as long as you offer a quality product there will always be consumers. The problem is all these shit services out there that offer "picks" or education. I have no issue with either and think they are both good ideas, but most are people that are just there to rip off others.

That being said I would like to focus primarily on those with small accounts who are trying to learn to trade the market. I remember starting out and wishing I could find someone to teach me what I needed to know, but was also bright enough to not fall for any of these "gurus". So I learned to old way: Hours of research for several years before trading, having success initially, having more success, letting my ego get to big, blowing up several accounts (Nothing to big), finding what I'm good at and trading that. My problem here is I think the best website to build like this is an education one mixed with some kind of chatroom everyone can be in while the market is open. However, how do you market that without sounding like one of these gurus? Or is there some other service that could be useful that I am missing?

Also, if you do go down that path of a chatroom and education how do you differentiate yourself? My biggest thought was price. I love seeing the gurus saying "hey wanna know how to turn that $1,000 into $100,000, find out by joining my chatroom" even though the chatroom is $300 a month and they're just pumping all of their stock picks.

So, any input here is greatly appreciated. Maybe this is just a dumb idea (I dont think so but maybe) so if it is dont be scared to tell me lol. I just truly love the market and would like to make a legit business out of it while helping others be successful.

Tell me why I shouldn't do this

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 09:21 AM PDT

Within the last year or a so, I have picked up woodworking as a hobby. I don't have a ton of projects under my belt, but the ones I have done would definitely be considered challenging and they have turned out very well. I think I have finally discovered something I really enjoy and am pretty talented at.

Currently, I am working a very boring mundane desk job and would love to get out of it (just like a majority of America). Albeit, I would feel horrible leaving so soon, because it is a close friend of mine's father's company. He hired me expecting me to be fully committed to stay for a while.

I'm sure you can see where this is going. I am thinking about trying to turn this hobby into a living and produce custom wooden countertops. And, no, I would not jump into this tomorrow. I know I need more experience in the shop and also more education. I constantly am watching videos of different builds and reading about techniques and even more so since I thought about this idea. After watching numerous videos of countertop builds, none of them seem to be anymore difficult than some of the projects I have done.

Wooden countertops seem to be making a comeback and from my brief search of people making them, it doesn't seem like there are all that many. I have heard woodworking can be very difficult to make money doing, but I think that is more regarding furniture makers and smaller items. People are willing to spend on their kitchens, and wooden tops are substantially cheaper than granite and especially marble but still with plenty of money to be made.

Tell me why this is a bad idea or give me the encouragement to go for it.

Starting a business in the cannabis industry

I'm wanting to start a business. I already have an idea set in stone that includes the broad purpose, customer niche, product look, and marketing strategy. I just have not a clue how to go about making product or really how to get moving in the start up stage.

What are the do's and don'ts?

    Investors?

    Setbacks?

    Etc
