Received a notice from a lawyer, someone fell in front of my house? Homeowners insurance Q

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:25 AM PDT

I bought my first house in January in the USA and had a quick question about a homeowners insurance claim.

I received a piece of certified mail over the weekend which came from a lawyer stating that their client had fallen in front of my house at the beginning of March. There's very little evidence in the letter except to say that the cause of the injury was a piece of my sidewalk which has been upended by a tree root (a photograph of my sidewalk was included with the letter).

Now, there is a crack in my sidewalk and it's something I've been meaning to patch up myself. Just waiting for the weather in my area to be above 50F as I've read this is important for laying concrete.

I've opened a claim with my homeowners insurance company and they'll do an investigation and contact the lawyer of the injured party, but my question is, is there anything I should be aware of with this kind of sidewalk trip claim?

Also want to know if there's any kind of recourse for me as the HO given the specifics of the repair which needed to be accomplished to prevent the injury here.

[NY] Buying General Liability Contractor's Insurance

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 06:44 PM PDT

    Hey,

I'm looking to buy insurance to do a single small renovation job on my brother's apartment. His building requires insurance for any work, and I was wondering if it would be possible to purchase a policy for just myself. I'm able to perform the work without issue, but do not have a contractor's license. The work is literally sanding the walls/sheetrock to be flat, but since there will be noise we have to ask for a permit from the building and thus this requires insurance as per their guidelines.

Is it possible to buy some sort of handyman's insurance like this without a GC license?

    Question about group health insurance.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:49 PM PDT

I currently work as a sales manager. I work with and "hire" sole proprietors to sell my companies products. The individuals I hire on are independent contractors and get no benefits from my company besides the commissions they earn. In the particular industry I'm in, most of the individuals are full time business owners without employees.

I have been in a few conversations with individuals who sell for me or are interested in selling for me, about health insurance. Many of them have a spouse that has a 9 to 5 job just for the health insurance. The rest of them complain about having to buy insurance from the marketplace at high prices (this is what they tell me, I don't know how costly it actually is).

Is there a way to group these independent contractors together into a group plan? If so, is there a way to group them under my company's flag? I know it sounds selfish, but if it is a possibility, I'd like to use it as an opportunity to enrich their lives and help my business grow.

I know nothing about health insurance. This is just a fringe idea...if I'm totally off base, please let me know.

I know car insurance deceases with age, but is that mainly because you have more driving experience?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:12 AM PDT

I'm 26, and I never learned to drive. I'm vaguely considering starting driving, but I'm concerned about the price of car insurance. I'm told it's a lot cheaper if you're 25 or older, but is this still true if you've never even put your foot on the pedal before in your life?

Submitting for VSP Reimbursement after Paying With FSA?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:44 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy glasses at a store that is not covered by VSP, my vision insurance. VSP would however allow me to submit the claim and get reimbursed. Is there anything wrong with doing that if I paid for the item with my FSA card?

    Thanks!

If Auto and Homeowners Policies are the money makers for agents what are the money makers for commercial products?? Is it Marine, Crop, Trucking, Inland?

I guess what I really want to know is which sector of insurance is the most profitable. Is it health? Medical? Or any of the above?

Why is it recommended that contractors that are hired to work on a home should carry insurance? Wouldn't the homeowners liability insurance cover their injury?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 05:30 AM PDT

Will homeowners liability insurance cover an injury for someone who we hire to work on/in home? For example, a painter, housekeeper, etc? We want to have someone clean our home on a regular basis but she does not have insurance, hence the question.

Looking for motorcycle insurance in Alberta, Canada

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 05:44 PM PDT

I have a 2001 Honda CBR 600 f4i, previously it was insured with AMA. My insurance expired in November and I didn't renew it because I didn't want to pay for my bike to be chained up in the garage all winter and AMA refused to let me insure it monthly for part of the year. Now that spring is here I'm shopping for new insurance and I'm looking for suggestions on who is good for bikes. I would like to be able to insure it for a part of the year, Ideally March to September. I'm only looking for PLPD as my bike isn't worth a whole lot financially.

Help understanding my claim and settlement

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 05:22 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I've recently settled with my insurance company after we had fire damage. I was instructed to reach out to my mortgage company and to let them know we had settled and to ask what their course of actions will be. I was put in contact with their Lost Draft department and they have explained the process to me but I feel as if I was getting mixed answers.

I received a letter today from them and it actually details how it works, but I still have some questions. My settlement included hotel stay, the cleaning of my house, the removal of any destroyed flooring, full cleaning of all fabrics (clothes), asbestos removal, movers packing up the house and bringing everything back. All of these services had waivers for the contractors to be paid directly by my insurance company. I signed them, they were paid and the work is being done totaling 36k.

The other part of my settlement came in the form of a check. The adjusters report calls for painting the entire house (inside) and new flooring. This check came to 22k, which I've signed and am sending to my mortgage company. This is where Im having trouble understanding. I understand they have an interest in the house, so they want to make sure the work is done. I have contractors lined up, ready. They talk about Total Loss Proceeds (TLP), and there are different methods they will take depending on the TLP amount. This is where I'm confused.

The letter states "If the TLP exceeds 40k: When you submit full insurance adjusters report, insurance claim check (Signed by all), Current phone number of each borrower, and contractor estimate including full detail, deposit amount, and contractors license number. We will disburse from the TLP, the amount of $40,000 or 10% of your unpaid principal balance, less a minimum of 10% holdback for final inspection (Whichever is greater), jointly issued to you and your licensed contractors"

Do they calculate my TLP adding up all services and work paid for (58k), or is it considered just the 22k check? Also, could someone ELI5 that quote? Want to make sure I get it 100%.

    Thanks for your time

    insurance subsidy question

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:41 PM PDT

    hello!

I am considering dropping to part time hours for personal reasons. The amount of money I am making will be significantly less, and I may lose health insurance benefits.

I am wondering if the amount of health insurance subsidy that I receive is reflecting my new monthly income, or the whole year's AGI?

Does this question make sense? My Annual income would be much less if I do this switch at the end of the year, but I don't want to wait that long, as my total income this year includes the FT wages as well.

    Thank you!!

Health Insurance Rescinded Payment From Over a Year Ago

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:30 PM PDT

First time poster, sorry for formatting.

For some background: I live in PA. The appointment was for an annual exam in Feb 2018. I was 24 years old at the time and covered under both of my parents' insurance (divorced). My father was my primary insurance (UPMC) and my mother was secondary (Highmark). I got married in May 2018 and my father removed me from his insurance in July 2018. I am still covered under my mother until I turn 26 in July 2019. I am now covered under my husband's insurance (also UPMC).

Because of some weird rules that insurance has I have no say into which insurance is my primary/secondary and I can't remove myself from my mother's in the middle of the year. Because I have been on my mother's insurance longer it defaults to be my primary and my husband's secondary. This is where the issues start.

The doctor takes both insurances, so that's not the problem. My father's UPMC has gone back and declined responsibility for that exam stating that they were not my primary at the time of care (they 100% were). Highmark, who is my primary now, claims that they weren't the primary at the time. Now I am responsible for fronting the entire appointment. I have tried to speak with both insurances and have gotten nowhere.

Do I have to provide information to UPMC that proves that they were the primary at the time of care? If so, what information would I need to gather? My father is older than my mother, I have been on his insurance much longer than my mother's. I'm not sure what falls under the rules of "primary". I think they are looking at the primary/secondary that I have now vs what I had at the time of care.

Housecleaners have been using the wrong product on our hardwood floors- finish is flaking, wood is cracking. We are renting. How can I protect myself?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:11 PM PDT

Our rental house was built in 1908 and has original wood flooring. The floors we're beautiful when we moved here in fall of 2016. Our home is 1800sq. ft and is entirely hardwood.

The last 3 months, I've noticed the hardwood finish flaking, floor discolored/dull and wood warping in areas.

Our last cleaning, I discovered the cleaning lady had been using ammonia based cleaner and a wet mop to clean the hardwoods. I took photographs of the ammonia based cleaning agent she was using + the wet mop.

I have renters insurance, however, I would like to give the cleaning company the chance to make the proper repairs.

What is the proper way to handle this situation where I am protected and I want to have the proper documentation.

Do I file something with my insurance company first?

    Question on moving coverage!

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:07 PM PDT

    Hi everyone -

I'm moving cross country this month and am shipping several suitcases via Amtrak. They offer up to $2000 per shipment but I'd like extra coverage. I also want extra coverage on the suitcases I'm taking with me on the plane. My understanding is renter's insurance will not cover this; does anyone know of any insurance that would provide coverage for this need? Thank you!

Does Drivewise collect data (driving, location, etc.) while not in use?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:43 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am from 24 years old and from Canada. I purchased a new vehicle 2 years and registered for auto-insurance under my parents plan, with All-State, to lower my monthly premiums. Everything was good and dandy for the last 2 years, until this year when my dad decided to upgrade his car. Consequently, his premiums slightly went up. The insurance company offered him a 10% discount on the new car with the stipulation that I use the Drivewise app whenever I drive.

The insurance company claims that my driving patterns will only be tracked when I choose to activate the app, however, I am very skeptical about that claim. I have a few questions/concerns with the Drivewise app that I was hoping some of you may be able to answer:

    1. Does the Drivewise app collect data when the app is inactive? I.e. time, location, speed, braking patterns. Truth is I tend to drive a tad bit faster at night time when the roads are clear. This is norm for people in Toronto. I don't want to be dinged for driving with traffic (110-120 km/h)
    2. Will the app also track my phone activity whilst I am driving? There are moments when my friends and family are on my phone changing music while I am driving. I hope this doesn't count as distracted driving.
    3. I also change music and make phone calls via Apple CarPlay feature in my car. Does this count as mobile activity while driving and will it ding me on my record?

I intend to get my own insurance plan when I am 25 (end of 2019). Any negative data collected by this app can significantly hinder my ability to afford payments for my own plan in the future. Any input from Reddit community will be greatly appreciated!

    Mortgage, Hazard and Homeowners Insurance?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:54 AM PDT

New homeowner so I just want to make sure I'm not paying for things twice. I have everything through escrow so it didn't immediately jump out on me but I'm currently paying for Mortgage Insurance, Hazard Insurance and Homeowners Insurance. On my homeowners insurance I have "Dwelling Protection".

I have a USDA Rural loan so I think the Mortgage Insurance is the PMI. I pay Hazard Insurance monthly and my Homeowners gets disbursed yearly.

Do I need to pay my insurance?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:48 AM PDT

So 4 months ago I put insurance on my snowmobile for a big trip. It was like 57$ for 6 months. I called today to cancel because I sold the snowmobile. My insurance agent said okay, I've been meaning to reach out to you because we never took initial payment and that my credit card declined and that they needed my wifes drivers license. So I asked them " you never were paid for the 4 months I've had insurance?" and he replied no and that he wanted to take payment now. I have the insurance cards saying I have insurance. At this point I told him I wanted to check my records and that I would call him back. I checked my credit card statements and they took out 6$ on the day I got insurance so he lied that they were declined. What is your guys take on this? Wish I would have asked him if I was even covered during those 4 months. Kinda thinking fuck this guy I'm not paying. Also to note that I have my car ins with someone else and only my snowmobile was with this company.

Question: Insanely high quotes after moving to new state

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:29 AM PDT

    The facts:

    1. No accidents in the last few years
    2. No tickets
    3. Car is owned, title in hand
    4. Year 09'
    5. Moved from Ohio to Kentucky
    6. Age 29
    7. Live in decent area of Lexington
    8. Changed driver's license to Kentucky license about 6 to 8 months ago
    9. No other drivers
    10. Renting home
    11. Driving around 10 to 15k yr maybe...
    12. Lived in state just shy of a year at this point

Now the bare minimum quotes are more expensive than the 100k/300k coverage I had before. Similar coverage was almost triple the price if not more /mo

I eventually settled on ROOT but I'm trying to see about bundling with renters or just getting quotes again since it's been a year. But the insurance quotes are still absolutely insane and the companies can't tell my why it's so expensive

Let me know if I'm missing any important info

    [LA] Car Insurance advice/tips

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:34 AM PDT

So I just got off the phone with Geico and I'm starting my new insurance policy with them. When I was doing the online quote it was like $192/6 mo for liability only and everything was set at the state minimum. At the end of the phone call, the rep goes "so your monthly payments is going to be $400/mo, there was some driving stuff not accounted for". I went on the app and edited the coverage a bit and rejected everything I could, it lowered my monthly payments to like $326/mo. I did car shopping through a broker and they quoted me $500 for full coverage and then I went to the insurance companies directly and they all gave similar quotes for the lowest coverage so I went with geico.

I'm 24 male, just moved to Los Angeles, my car is a 2011 acura tsx with like 100k miles. I use to be on my parents insurance so I don't know if this price is normal or not for someone like me. I've been driving since I was 16, I had one accident is 2017 where I accidentally bumped some guys rear but the damage was minimal, and apparently there were a couple other hits only my driving record like speeding or careless. So is me paying $326/mo for liability with everything at state minimum normal? If not what should I do to get my monthly payments lowered?

Hit while turning by passing vehicle on two lane highway.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:06 AM PDT

Son was travelling Northbound the vehicle behind him attempted to pass while he was turning left onto a side road while signaling. The vehicle behind him entered the southbound lane to pass his car and hit front driver's side quarter panel.

We only have liability on the car as it is barely worth $3k. The car had to be towed and the estimate is around $4.5k to fix so totaled.

Other insurance is ghosting us for the most part as their driver hasn't admitted liability(Go figure). The police report states that she "didn't believe she seen a turn signal" and struck son's car while he was turning left as she attempted to pass.

Her insurance called mine this morning and were saying things completely different than the police report of the accident. They also said they wouldn't be opening a claim against our insurance to cover the damages to their vehicle.

Basically it just sounds like they are dodging pretty hard and don't want to open a claim for their damage as they do not was our insurance company investigating the accident either. We forwarded a copy of the police report to our insurance so they have all pertinent information.

What can I expect from here? Am I going to have to take the driver to small claims court if her insurance doesn't claim liability? No traffic citations were issued to either party.

Does my auto insurance company owe me money for time spent not driving my car after an accident while it’s being repaired?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:51 PM PDT

I was in a single car accident on February 16th and still have not gotten my car back and the shop isn't expecting the repairs to be done until April 16th for whatever reason. Since my car has been in my insurance company/their shop's possession do they owe me for those two months of insurance even though I was not driving due to them taking so long?

Got involved in a car accident with rental company

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:44 AM PDT

    Hi,

I got involved in a car accident in Polk City, Florida. Here is the story and I need advice.

When i rented the car i only put down one driver myself. I let my buddy drive the car later that day and we got into an accident. He got a ticket from Florida Highway Patrol for careless driving. Now I had to claim the accident to the rental company and I told them exactly what happened. And since i signed a papers I should not give it to anybody else to drive and insurance i bought does not pay for the other driver. Note that none of us has cars so we didn't have a car insurance.

Now after about 4 month they contacted back and told us that they want to sit down in person and talk with us both and see exactly what happened.

Now if we go with the original story we probably have to pay for the car full price - car was toasted btw. If we do change the story and say that I was the driver then we can get away.

Now I am assuming rental company needs to provide some documentation for their insurance company and they need some story that makes everyone's life easier. If their insurance wont pay then they have to get money from us but we are two broke 3rd year students. It will take us 5 years to pay that off.

So I am thinking it would be everyone's best interest if we change the story little bit. now the only way it can be proven wrong is if FHP looks at cameras and checks who the driver was otherwise,no one can prove that.

I need to know the consequences of this decision and potential solutions if you have any better.

Also if we do change the story and i get a car later in life, will i have to inform my insuarance about it? since it is still on my friends record
