How to find a business partner, colleague, or someone to just bounce ideas off of

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 05:36 PM PDT

I have a full time day job and a budding side project I'd like to build into a full fledged business. I need my day job to pay my bills, but a small part of me dies each day I walk into the office. While nearly every free moment I have is devoted to my side project, I don't have a person who can fill the role of a thought partner. There's no shortage of people I can turn to at work to overcome a problem, but I don't have a similar person I can turn to when working through the strategy of my side project. How have you found a thought partner/cofounder/mentor/colleague in the nascent stages of building your small business?

How do you manage and track your cash flow?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:17 AM PDT

I know cash flow can be a major indicator of the health of your business, but this isn't something I've actively tracked in the past. I'm looking at suggestions for ways of tracking, like in this post, but what's the best option in your experience? Do you prefer:

-Managing in a spreadsheet -Using a dedicated bookkeeping/accounting tool (like Wave or similar) -Some other method

    Would love some insights!

My small business class and their business ideas

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:10 AM PDT

My Principles of IT students have been creating a business idea of their own all year. This includes budgets, executive summaries, location, a slideshow presentation, etc (and even more in the future). I made a simple form that I am trying to get other professionals to vote on what is the best business presentation, and best idea. They are currently working on business websites, but their presentations are very important. Any help from other professionals and small business owners would be great!

Website with the presentations and voting form

[Site is now mobile friendly, but here is direct link to voting form as well https://forms.gle/bggLu2G8iRR4aUgAA]

Does a no fee debit card processor exist?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:27 AM PDT

Hello all, my father owns a dry cleaners and hasnt really thought about his current card processing set up until a recent trip to California. He was visiting a friend and they dont take credit cards just cash and debit cards. The debit card goes straight to their account with no fees. Is that set up with the bank? How is their machine/POS programmed I couldnt find a lot of info on this and it seemed too good to be true, though I know nothing of business.

    A NonProfit Business Is Possible?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:45 PM PDT

I want to start a company that I would be the sole owner and worker of however I want to make zero profit from it. I want it to be similar to a non profit where the business can have funds to support itself and the equipment it needs but I don't want any personal profit from it.

Is this possible? I have absolutely no business knowledge or education.

Our business' social media presence is linked to 1 employees personal FB account. Can ownership be transferred without losing our username/pictures/followers?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:07 PM PDT

The following may be slightly confusing because I may not have a full understanding of how this all works: Our small business had an "unclaimed" FB page which was created by a family member unbeknownst to me or anyone else at the business. An employee discovered the page and offered to keep it updated with content to which the boss agreed. The employee then claimed the page and made themselves the admin so they could post and edit content. They have since started an Instagram page for the business as well, again linked to their own personal account. In the event that this employee is no longer working for us, could their be a potential problem with us getting locked out of our own FB and IG pages? Can ownership be transferred without the full cooperation of the employee? Can ownership be "shared" between both of us? I would like to keep them involved and "in charge" because they are doing a nice job. However, in the unlikely event that the relationship with the employee ends poorly I would hate to have our social media accounts held hostage or lost completely because we have no way to claim ownership. This could be a quick solve, I just don't know. I would have suggested starting a brand new account for the IG and shared login info for the FB as well but I had learned this all happened after the fact. Thanks to anyone with some help!

I'm struggling with maintaining the right balance between managing a convenience store and being a good father. Any recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Do I need to register? (Business license)

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:04 PM PDT

My state says I don't necessarily need to register for interstate commerce. I have one marketing client hat pays me a flat rate through stripe, on my second payment now with a service agreement. They are located in another state. The other has me as a 1099 and is in state. Only two clients.

Does anyone know if it's time to form a business entity and register in my state yet?

    Website Design Questions

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:00 PM PDT

Which hosting service site would allow us to build a customizable website? I wanted to know if google sites is a good platform to build and customize a website for a business. I looked into wix and squarespace, but I do not know if they have restrictions when it comes to customizing a website, since they have ready made templates. I would appreciate your help answering my questions.

P.S. Forgive me for my ignorance, but I wanted to know, what the steps are after purchasing a domain name?

    NY LLC Question

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 08:40 PM PDT

    Hello!

I applied to form an LLC in NY using the online filter. Got confirmation receipt and email almost immediately. Does this mean the LLC has already been approved and is active? Or is that a separate email that comes later? It's been 6 days since I filed and received initial receipt and confirmation, should I be expecting another confirmation?

    Thanks all!

Question: Filing taxes for the 1st time this year for my business. I was employed from Jan. to late June. I took over a business and became self employed in July. Would I need to file my personal taxes along with the business? I did not pay myself personally from the business until Jan. 2019.

Building client base for cleaning company

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:07 PM PDT

Hi, I've been lurking this sub for some time now and thought I should ask you guys for advice. I run a one woman show providing cleaning services, specializing in move out and make ready. I own a carpet extractor and offer the service with every appointment, something that not many cleaning companies do in my area. But I am having trouble finding clients. I'm only getting a couple jobs a week and I'd like to have one or two a day. I have been stopping in at apartment offices, emailing property managers and advertising on craigslist/Facebook. I'm just starting out so I don't have a website or reviews. How do I get off the ground? Thank you in advance for any advice.

Advice on getting a startup loan

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 04:58 PM PDT

Hi there, I'm hopefully going to be a first time entrepreneur and a few friends are thinking about starting up a business. We have expertise in a niche field, but none of us have a lot of money saved to start. We each have access to several thousand in credit cards, which could spend up to 50k but know the interest is high.

Could a bank give us a loan with the right business plan? Would a bank be the best option? Sorry if this question is super basic, we are pretty young and looking for some real help.

    Thank you in advance!

    Summarizing topics from long podcasts

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 04:18 PM PDT

I'm subscribed to a few business/tech related podcasts but I never get to go through all of them. They just keep piling on.

Some of my friends feel the same way, so I started timestamping a few of them so my friends can quickly skim through them and only listen to the parts they're interested in. They seem to like it so far, so sharing it in case others might find it useful.

You can skim through some business/tech podcasts we're following here.

Are there any good business podcasts folks are listening to these days? If they're good I'd like to follow and summarize them too!

Advice for starting a tutoring center (Canada)

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:48 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

As the title says, my eventual goal is to run a tutoring center like Kumon or Oxford Learning. I would prefer not to use one of those franchises though, because it seems like I lose a lot of control, independence and profit in exchange for questionable "support". But I'm not sure how to start otherwise. I have an irrelevant degree and I'm willing to get an education degree if necessary, but I don't know if there's a cheaper or more efficient way to go about it. I need to do stuff like buy a curriculum (do I have to buy a special license to use workbooks for commercial purposes?) and attract customers. My ideal age group is K-9. I know it will be a long and slow process but right now I don't know where to even start. Any advice or resources (ideally Canada-specific) would be great.

    Thank you!
