I need to create a 1 minute video to promote myself and my business. What should I do? Posted: 25 Apr 2019 11:01 PM PDT Just to give some background: This year I've been nominated for the young entrepreneur of the year in my city. There will be an event on June 14th where the winner will be announced and the prize is $5000 cash. Every nominee is required to submit a 1-minute video to explain who they are and what their business is. The expectations are set very low (they said iPhone videos are ok) but I'd like to go above and beyond to help win/become a finalist. My business is social media marketing and web design, I manage the social media pages for local businesses and build websites for them. I've been doing it for about 2 years. My question is: How should I go about this? Should I hire a professional video production company or do like a selfie video? I'm basically just looking for some ideas. Posted: 25 Apr 2019 10:41 AM PDT Hi folks, I posted a few months ago when I threw myself in the deep end and registered my hobby as abusiness. I'm still investing in training seminars, some equipment etc but am not making huge money yet. I want to know since I'm filing taxes and the LLC is pass through, does it matter if I don't have enough money in the LLC to buy the equipment for the business and use my personal money to pay for it? I know they say to keep business and personal finance separate, but I don't have the income yet to "afford" the equipment out of the LLC account, so I have to invest with my own money. Is it better to transfer money into the LLC account as seed money, then use the business card to buy it, or is it fine to buy the gear and pay for seminars etc with my own money since it's considered an investment in the business? Accounts Receivable Factoring - is it a good idea? Posted: 25 Apr 2019 11:45 AM PDT A friend is a one-man trucking business, and was telling me that since he typically waits to get paid for 30/60/90 day terms, he often sells his accounts receivables to a factoring company at a discount. (He gets less money now, the company gets the full payment from the original client later) Has anyone else done this? Is this a trucking-specific thing? Or do people do it in other small businesses too (construction? manufacturing?) Are there alternatives? I have a business bank account and a business debit card. I have to make a large purchase for the business soon and want to obviously use my business money for write off purposes. If I make the purchase on my personal credit card that gets points and then pay off that purchase right away with my business bank account, does that count? Facebook Ads - How on earth do I get my campaign profitable/consistent? Posted: 26 Apr 2019 12:22 AM PDT I have an online store that I am trying to get off the ground. I have put a lot of time, effort and money into FB ads with some minor success. I have read about and tried to improve all aspects of the ad - audiences, copywriting, a good picture, a good landing page, the whole shebang. But I have spent hundreds on ads and only made a few sales, which is obviously not sustainable and is quite discouraging considering the effort I've put in. I'm pretty confident in the appeal of the product and pricing, the postage price is fairly low as I have been advertising only in my country (although I do ship internationally), and I think the ads I have run are pretty solid. Can anybody think of something I might be missing or something I can do to improve my success rate? Any advice would be very much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Should I start paying myself as a W2 employee if I want to apply for a mortgage in the future? Posted: 25 Apr 2019 11:07 AM PDT I just got word that I'll be laid off from my day job this month. I have a side business that I'm now going to grow into my full-time job. I've never showed much of a profit for my LLC, so up to now I've just paid the taxes at the end of the year on my personal filing as a pass-through entity. My question is - should I convert to an S-Corp and start paying myself an hourly wage if I want to apply for a mortgage in the future? The business will make less than $20k this year, about double that or more next year. I'm torn between writing off as much as I can or trying to make big profits to show that I have an income. I feel like it would be beneficial if I could have pay stubs to prove my income, if not for a mortgage then at least for other types of personal credit if needed. I don't want to have to give all of the business financials to lenders if I don't have to, I'd rather be treated as if I was working for someone else so that only my take-home pay matters. Does this make sense in my situation, or should I wait until the business is making over $50k or so to file as an S-Corp? Obviously I'll consult with a pro before I do anything drastic, but I'd like to hear from people who have been there. TL;DR About to be self employed, want a mortgage in future. Please bear with me, I am new a this. I am wondering: -Are there any state/federal permits I should know about? I've found none for this business type but thought i'd ask. -After filing, how easily can I change the address that receives paperwork on behalf of the company? My living residence changes frequently. -What paperwork can I expect after filing and within the first year? And are quarterly taxes required the first year and is payment made in estimates? -What is ALL the maintenance an LLC requires? (Is it just the annual renewal and quarterly tax return?) -Lastly, I will be employing multiple independent contractors as part of my business. Creating Product Labels out of Dear Inventory Posted: 25 Apr 2019 04:29 PM PDT Hi. We have a distribution/manufacturing style business that packages several (2000 SKU's) into retail type packaging for our distributors and dealers. We use Dear Inventory for our inventory management. We have to print off a sticker for each product that get packaged. This has our logo, the part number, description, in some cases the cutomer part number, and a bar code that has the part number and description encoded in it. Currently, we print a page at a time with Xcel onto label stock. This is ten labels. We file the extras and use them as needed. I'd like to print the exact labels for the parts on the pick list as it is generated. Dear seems to be able to print one for each different part, but not several when there are more than one of the same part number. Much useful information has given to me here. About 2 months ago I had a business idea I thought would be great to try. So I started doing my research and found it was more complicated than I thought. Especially taxes. Once I started reading about estimated taxes, self-employed tax I was pretty confused. But after reading and research I compilied what I believe constitutes all the tax responsibilities of a small business. I'm posting this so that hopefully experienced small business owners can correct me if I'm wrong. I have a single-member LLC, taxed as a Sole Proprietorship. No employees, very simple, work out of my home. So I believe I have to pay:
I plan on utilizing QuickBooks Self-Employed (the TurboTax bundle) to help me with taxes. I know many say in this subreddit to hire someone, but my business is very simple. S-corp business address for car registration taxes Posted: 25 Apr 2019 08:28 PM PDT I live in a 10% sales tax county, but my S-corp is registered to my CPA's address. My car is ~80% business use, so my CPA made me register my car at the business address, partially because that address is in a 9% sales tax area. Which reduces my tax on my car lease. I just read that California allows for PO boxes as a business address. Is there any reason I couldn't get a PO box in a *very* low sale tax county nearby (there's a few), register my business to that address, and have my car registered to that address? Iv always wanted to be my own boss but I don't wanna run a mechanic shop. We get an old guy that comes through my current job and he does ultra sonic and magnetic testing on our equipment. I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet but I will. Just wondering if anyone else has done something similar and the ups and downs of the business? Part-time salesperson - Will this model work? Posted: 25 Apr 2019 09:29 AM PDT I want to hire part-time salespeople in a few cities around the US. Their job is to get my product into stores. This isn't a big commitment, I'm thinking maybe 3-5 hours a week. Here's the catch: Each salesperson is like a "partner" in their respective city. Meaning for every product they place in a store (including re-orders) they get 35% of the profit from each sale (the upside is quite good if they do sell). Salespeople will tailor their own personal sales pitch, get around in their own car, use their own computer/equipment. All I'll do is give them some general guidelines about the product, send them samples and supplies for promotional events, and collect order reports from them. Now I'm not here on reddit asking if these should be W-2 or 1099 workers, I'll ask a lawyer about that. If I need to hire a payroll provider and pay payroll taxes I will.
