Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

German government slashes 2019 growth forecast to 0.5 percent, cut its 2019 growth forecast for the second time within three months

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 02:37 AM PDT

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-economy/german-government-slashes-2019-growth-forecast-to-0-5-percent-idUSKCN1RT0VJ

BERLIN (Reuters) - The German government cut its 2019 growth forecast for the second time within three months on Wednesday, reflecting a worsening slowdown in Europe's largest economy driven by a recession in the manufacturing sector.

Berlin now expects gross domestic product growth of 0.5 percent this year. In January, the government had cut its growth estimate to 1.0 percent from 1.8 percent previously.

For 2020, the government envisages a rebound with economic expansion of 1.5 percent.

Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said trade disputes and Brexit uncertainty were weighing on the German economy. Domestic factors include the introduction of new car emission regulations (WLTP) and unusually low Rhine water levels which have led to supply and production bottlenecks in the industrial sector.

My commentary: My VEA holding isn't feeling too good.

    REITs vs Real estate

    Posted: 16 Apr 2019 11:58 AM PDT

I asked myself this question a few times and decided to do some research and I feel like some users would like to know what I found about the REITs vs Real estate debate:

Pros of REITs vs Real estate:

    - Higher return on average

    - Less risk (diversified REITs funds will never go to 0)

    - More diversification

    - REITs have management teams that have a lot of knowledge in the industry

    - REITs are a lot more liquid

    - Less capital required

    - You don't have to find tenants, repair roofs, deal with tenants not paying/trashing the property

Pros of Real estate vs REITs:

    - Having the ability to buy small properties at a good price (large REITs won't compete to buy a $500,000 property)

    - You can live in the property you bought

    - Ability to have a higher return if you buy at the right price

    - REITs can be be expensive/inexpensive at times (valuations are volatile), property prices are not as volatile.

    - tax deductions

    - Possibility to have a higher leverage

    - Lower correlation to the stock market then REITs, directly investing in real estate leads to more diversification

Obviously, I could be wrong and I could be missing out on a lot of points, feel free to comment and I'll add your thoughts to the list!

Can we get an update from the guy who plowed his entire savings into AMZN at the last high?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2019 06:35 AM PDT

Can't find the old post, but this was the guy who put most/all of his considerable savings into an "unnamed stock" which was most likely Amazon. With the market most back at its highs I'm interested in whether this guy was able to hold or not.

    Edit

Some of you have asked why I care, or why does it matter.

I work with investments, and I have a memory for this sort of thing. I'm merely curious. The guy was obviously concerned (possibly distraught), and given that he had shared how he got into the predicament, I figured he'd be fine sharing where he is now.

    The future of lithium

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 12:41 AM PDT

    https://phys.org/news/2019-02-sodium-lithium-boost-sodium-ion-battery.html

I have been tracking scientific discoveries since a young age. Now that I'm investing I think I should use my vast amounts of knowledge about random discoveries to make plays.

This discovery was made by the guy who made lithium batteries. I remember hearing about it in 2016/2017 time. This was his last invention he was working on since he invented lithium because he wanted a cleaner, more powerful alternative

Does anyone know of any companies that could possibly be developing or are planning to develop Sodium batteries?

So I'm 26 years old and am looking to purchase my first mutual fund.

I am leaning on a growth and income fund and buying it at 2500 dollars.

I have fidelity, and ally bank to make the purchase. I'm just unsure if I should buy it through a Roth IRA or a taxable account.

    Investing on Margin & REITs

    Posted: 16 Apr 2019 07:06 PM PDT

I'm thinking of taking a little bit of margin out to put into some relatively stable funds. Margin rates I'm seeing range around 3-5% depending on broker. I'm looking at Vanguard REITs (so well established, diversified) which can return 7-8% on dividends alone.

Can someone poke holes in my plan if I were to take out margin and put into relatively high dividend paying REITs? I'll have enough to cover a margin call should housing drop. But is this a viable, relatively long term play?

Also, is margin interest in any ways deductible for tax purposes?

Disney has been doing streaming through Hulu for years and the platform is still losing over $1 billion a year, how is this new streaming platform so revolutionary?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 03:16 AM PDT

Disney is acting like a startup trying to compete directly with Netflix instead of doing what they do best and create stories and content which they can make bank licensing out to distributors. Because I've seen the interviews of Iger, and he keeps saying "Disney has the technology" and to me that is a red flag that Disney does not have the technology, as Disney is not like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video where they have coders and techies constantly improving and innovating on the platform's algorithms.

Just because over the top streaming is the future of entertainment doesn't mean Disney has to stray from their true North, and it also doesn't mean Disney couldn't still make billions licensing out their creative content to streaming sites. I think this pivot is Disney shifting strategy based on the competition and not based on the customer, like Walmart trying to be Amazon instead of doing what they do best with brick and mortar distribution centers worldwide.

Bloomberg: Powell Adopts an Inflation Stance Yellen Shunned

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 02:24 AM PDT

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-17/powell-adopts-whites-of-the-eyes-inflation-stance-yellen-shunned?srnd=premium

The central bank has backed off the interest-rate hikes it had been delivering to avoid a potentially dangerous rise in inflation that economic theory says could result from the hot jobs market. Instead, Powell & Co. have put policy on hold until sub-par inflation rises convincingly.

"The Fed is evolving to a 'whites-of-the-eyes' approach in terms of inflation'' under which it won't hike rates until price rises accelerate, said Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Amherst Pierpont Securities LLC.

Chicago Fed President Charles Evans said this week that the central bank may hold policy steady until the fall of 2020 and might even reduce rates in the unlikely event that underlying inflation softened.

Such a stance could eventually lead to faster price rises, lower unemployment and a longer expansion as officials refrain from raising rates to rein in the economy.

Then-Fed Chair Janet Yellen rejected a "whites of their eyes'' strategy in 2016, arguing that the central bank needed to be pre-emptive in dealing with inflation because monetary policy acts with a lag. Powell, a central bank governor at the time, supported her.

That's the impetus behind the Fed's decision to reconsider its inflation framework. While Powell has ruled out increasing the 2 percent goal, he's raised the possibility that the central bank could adopt a "make-up'' strategy when it concludes its review in the first half of 2020.

'China’s Netflix' is really an 'online Disney': iQiyi CEO

    Posted: 16 Apr 2019 10:57 AM PDT

When Tim Yu Gong, the CEO of iQiyi, came to New York and Boston for a Non-Deal Roadshow in 2015, he found it "was very painful" to make U.S. investors understand what his company does.

Three years later, as his Chinese video-streaming company backed by search engine giant Baidu was getting ready for a Nasdaq listing, Gong found his story had become much easier to tell. Video streaming had taken off in the U.S., and Netflix had become a Wall Street darling— its share price (NFLX) at around $350, had more than quadrupled within three years. iQiyi (IQ) was the first Chinese video streaming site to go public in the U.S. so it naturally won the title of "China's Netflix". Its $2.4 billion IPO in March 2018 was the fourth-largest U.S. IPO last year and the biggest among 33 Chinese companies that went public in the U.S. American investors may have never used its product, but that didn't stop them from betting on China's online entertainment industry. But Gong said iQiyi is so much more than just a streaming video service.

"Our business model is quite different from Netflix, but to raise funds and make it easier for Western investors to understand, we call ourselves Netflix Plus at the time. The most accurate way to describe us would be 'online Disney'," Gong told Yahoo Finance in an interview. After a wild run, the stock has jumped by 54% in its first year in the public market, and grew 51% year-to-date. iQiyi shares have been holding up well among Chinese tech stocks, which have been hit by the U.S.-China trade tensions.

Gong believes the company's "Apple Garden"-like business model differentiates itself from Netflix's "single model" — It's expanding vertically within the Chinese market, trying to build an ecosystem on content and IP, such as literature, comics, light novels, and gaming. Unlike Netflix, it also offers ad-supported content free to users, whom the company hopes will become paid subscribers.

Question on Ebitda & deferred revenue

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 01:04 AM PDT

    Hi,

Just a quick question as I am looking at a software company from an M&A perspective.

Revenue is trending down for the past 3 years but the business is still generating operating profit with Ebitda margin of 40%. $ 0 capex for this business.

The company is getting paid upfront for some of its products and revenue will be recognized over time.

ie: cash up, deferred revenue up.

Does it mean that both Revenue (and Ebitda as a consequence) are misleading when analyzing this company as most of the cash may have been received (and spent!) upfront ?

What would you look at to assess the MA potential of such a software business?

    Thanks
