Tax implications of selling high and then buying back in at a dip Posted: 22 Mar 2019 04:03 AM PDT Unable to find the answer after looking online so I figured I would ask you guys. Here's an example scenario. Let's say I own a stock that I've had for less than a year. It's now at an all-time high and I'd like to sell and get back in when it dips at a later time. If I sell now I'll be taxed at my tax bracket rate, let's say 25% for arguments sake. Won't the stock have to dip drastically in order to make this strategy worth it? Wouldn't just holding through the dip make more sense financially (from a tax standpoint) if I was confident the stock would rebound? if I choose to hold and sell at a later time (after one year of owning the stock), let's say the tax rate would be 15%. So based on that, selling the stock before one year to buy back in during a dip only makes sense if the stock falls more than 10%, and this doesn't account for trading fees etc. Am I missing something? Wall Street analysts this week are increasingly worried about Amazon hurting the stocks they cover Posted: 22 Mar 2019 09:43 AM PDT https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/22/wall-street-analysts-see-an-amazon-effect-for-some-stocks.html Analysts who covers companies such as FedEx and MongoDB are watching Amazon closely. "Valuations for UPS & FDX has come under significant pressure in the past year, likely fueled by macroeconomic concerns and perceived competitive threats from Amazon," said Barclays analyst Brandon Oglenski. Apple is keeping partners in the dark about how it plans to package and price its video service Posted: 22 Mar 2019 12:09 PM PDT Apple is going to debut its video streaming service on Monday. The service will likely include some original content and the ability to subscribe to existing over-the-top services. Apple has been so secretive about how it plans to package the service that even its partners don't know details. [link] [comments] |

Alibaba Class Action - Worth It? Posted: 22 Mar 2019 07:24 AM PDT I got a letter in the mail today about joining the class for the now settled lawsuit against Alibaba. I do own the stock, and am technically a member of the class and could submit the paperwork requested so I can be distributed my piece of the settlement fund. I always hear that class actions are basically bunk unless you are the lawyers, so do you think its worth it for me to fill all this paperwork out and send it in? Anyone have experience with anything like this? [link] [comments] |
Ladybaybee recommended stock picks 2019-03-22 Posted: 22 Mar 2019 09:31 AM PDT Link to imgur with the picks and updated current investment ledger HOW I USE THIS: 1) All the stocks identified in the table are qualified as "BUY" opportunities. 2) I focus in the column "Success Rate(3m)" which shows the precision of the agents in the last 3 calendar months. I personally feel most comfortable with Rates 0.8 or higher. 3) Then, I see the number in "Tx(3m)" which represents the number of transactions that the agents predicted for this stock in the last 3 months. I prefer stocks that have had at least two transactions during this period. 4) Finally, I look at Growth(3m), if the agents have had a considerable growth (>5% in 3 months) then I follow that trade. 5) If a row in the table is colored green then it means that stock has been on the rise today so I purchase it immediately in order to ride the wave up. On the other hand, if the row is colored red, then I wait out until very close to market close to purchase the stock and let the price bottom out before climbing up again tomorrow. 6) After I purchase the stocks, I ALWAYS set a stop loss order at -2.5% from my buying price valid for the day. I think this is good hygiene, no matter how confident I am of my system, I still want to make sure that my losses are capped. I update this stop loss order every day. BACKGROUND I am not a financier or economist. I am electrical engineer with equal passion in artificial intelligence and financial markets. For the past 2 years I have been working on a system that would make short term predictions of stocks. The system is rather complex, I use multiple layers which include: Convolutional Neural Networks, LSTMs and Genetic Algorithms. All bulked together produce an output like in this image. The way to interpret the image is a follows: Symbol and Date columns are self explanatory, Quorum refers to autonomous agents that decide whether to BUY/NOT BUY or SELL/HOLD a stock. Each symbol has 9 agents, and the Quorum column, counts the number of agents that recommend Buy, Selling or Holding the stock. The "Not Owned" column means: if you don't own this stock then you should … The "Owned" column means: if you own this stock you should HOLD or SELL. The column "Growth(1 Year)" refers to what what has been the growth of this system of Agents in the past calendar year. The column "Tx(1Yr)" shows the number of full transactions that these agents recommended in the last calendar year. "Factor" is just the division of Growth divided by Transactions to get the average growth per transaction. Finally "Success Rate" shows how successful these agents have been in their recommendations in the past calendar year, success 1 means 100% successful, 0.5 means 50% successful, and so on. Many people have been curious about the actual process that the system follows, so here it is: for every symbol (600 stocks are analyzed daily), we get the full stock data (open, close, high, low, volume) for the past 4 months. Each stock is associated with another set of "lookalike" stocks as well as major ETF's. This initial dataset is run through a convolutional layer that extracts an undisclosed number of features. These features are then passed onto a recurrent neural network (LSTM) where sequences and patterns are extracted. The LSTM then spits out probabilities for the likelihood that this stock will have a positive, negative and neutral tendency in the next N days. These probabilities are then fed to a genetic evolution system (GES). This system essentially checks the predictions for the past N days and compares them with reality, following that the systems knows which predictions are performing the best. Once the system knows which stocks are being simulated the best, then the system automatically finds which of these best performing stocks have the biggest potential for the next few days. The system does not output explanations, unfortunately us humans are not capable of understanding (or visualizing) a problem of this dimensionality, for example the LSTM part alone works with over 10 million dimensions, not features but dimensions. Stock/Bond certificate replicas Posted: 22 Mar 2019 12:44 PM PDT I was wondering if I am able to buy/make(using a template) stock/bond certificates replicas? I own some stocks/bond on my mobile account and want the certificates for decorative purposes. I know of sites like "giveashare" where you can buy actual stock certificate but I really don't want to pay 2x the worth of a stock. I don't care if the certificate has any actual value (I will still make/buy replicas of stock/bonds I actually own) I just care that it looks somewhat professional. Thank you in advance. Will Brexit have effect on big IT companies, noted on US stock markets like SAP, MS etc? Posted: 22 Mar 2019 06:38 AM PDT I'm totally new to stocks and I'm wondering if this kind of events have influence on stock prices. If so it, what will be the effect? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 10:15 AM PDT Hey folks, I am very new to stock investment, and was having a look at index funds since they are the obvious choice for someone new like me. I am comparing the S&P 500 vs Nasdaq 100 indices, and i found the Nasdaq100 has always outperformed the S&P 500 except at the tech bubble year 2000. On the other hand, everybody out there is recommending sp500 and very few people recommend nasdaq. People say nasdaq is mostly tech, but that is not true, only 54% of it is tech, and with 100 companies on board i guess it should be diversified enough, isn't it? My question is; should i go all-in in Nasdaq? [link] [comments] |
Is BioScrip (BIOS) a buy right now? Posted: 22 Mar 2019 10:13 AM PDT Although it's been hitting lower lows for the past few days it's gotta bottom out somewhere close to where it is now. In 2017 it has gone lower than where it is now and clearly bounced back. I feel like one firm is going to upgrade it buy Monday and boom 15% gain. What do you guys think?? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Mar 2019 09:09 AM PDT So I had a nightmare last night that WRK actually went to zero. I didn't think a lot about it until I took a look at my stocks this morning and WRK seems to be sinking like a rock. A few Google searches revealed nothing new. What's going on? Am I missing some big news? [link] [comments] |
Any good way to get into an IPO before it rockets? Posted: 22 Mar 2019 09:07 AM PDT So, LEVI opens and goes up five points. So, as an investor do I have a better recourse than sitting around typing LEVI into Ameritrade's search engine until LEVI appears? There's no way to do anything along the lines of a limit order? Will Zuora ZUO achieve lift-off any time soon? Posted: 22 Mar 2019 08:57 AM PDT Zuora reports earnings, falls in line with projected earnings, and promptly gets tossed out the window. Seems that these are doing just fine as a growth-focused company. Of course it's not generating profits: tech service startups reinvest into customer retention and growth. Immediate profitability is not a reasonable expectation and other tech stocks will still roar into the stratosphere while bleeding cash (wish I had bought a lot more MDB, for certain). So, what reasonable expectation is not being met? Why aren't people interested in buying or at least holding? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 05:07 AM PDT Just curious if im damaging my portfolio by investing into 20-30 stocks long term or should i be focus on a smaller number stocks? Is the return the same either way i invest assuming its the same amount of money invested and roughly same performance between both sets of stocks. Im really just asking to make sure the math and compound interest are basically the same between both sets assuming same money is invested and roughly same performance between stocks. I basically just want to make sure the math works out to being roughly the same [link] [comments] |
