    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 02:47 AM PST

Title says it all - I'm 33 years old, single, and have been in door-to-door insurance sales ever since I graduated high school, and I've built up a renewing book of business that is so large that I'll never need to work again (passive income of around ~30k a month). When I was in high school, I found myself being very fulfilled by volunteer work and doing good.

I give lots to charity, but, perhaps selfishly, I get gratification from being hands-on in my work. What opportunities are available for someone with my experience to do REAL good in the world? I don't want to end up doing something like building houses and taking away a job from someone in Africa or anything like that. I have no skills except for sales, so Engineers and Doctors Without Borders aren't really options for me unfortunately.

    Any ideas?

Best free resources to learn more about sales?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 07:53 AM PST

Any free resources you could recommend on sales, selling pychology and overall something you had found helpful? Videos, websites, podcasts, apps, movies...? many thanks in advance :)

Losing my edge? The thrill is gone, or temporarily missing.

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 09:47 AM PST

After 10 years in sales I find myself not being excited about sales and wins. I close deals and score and it barely affects me. Also, I must be tired of the chase. There are accounts everyone would die for to win and I have no interest in chasing them. Decision makers don't respond, they have most of the leverage, and everyone and their sister is chasing them. My manager asks me about them and I'm just going after them to check the box but I'm over dealing with push back and attitude from prospects that know they are the hottest chick/dude in the club, so to speak. In the past I had the attitude of "I'm going to win them. I know they say no to everyone, but I'm going to win them over" so I chased them and took my licks, but often won. Nowadays, I feel like "ugh, forget that."

That said, I'm doing awesome. I'm leading my (small) organization, other local companies are recruiting me, and commissions are rolling in.

Lost my edge? Or finally grew up?

I'm in a very strange place. Time for vacation or a move to management? Or a more thrilling sale?

Just curious if anyone can relate. No complaints here, just curious.

Anyone else finding it harder and harder to find phone numbers for prospects?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 09:00 AM PST

Companies today seem to be doing anything they can to conceal their corporate HQ phone numbers. Even using a resource like Hoovers/Bloomberg/Jigsaw etc either the numbers don't go to a voicemail (or receptionist) or it's their customer support line. Hate relying solely on emails but finding myself doing it more and more simply because I cannot find a phone number

Decision Maker Out of Office All Day

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:43 AM PST

I have a quick sales question. In my line of sales, the decision maker is out of the office all day (maybe all week) goes in sporadically. I find myself leaving messages with the gatekeeper that will either never get passed on or never get me a call back from the decision maker. My question is... How do I get in contact with a decision maker who is almost never in their office, or if they are, it is at random times? Getting their email address seems like the obvious but my cold emails have been getting a response rate of much less than 10%. Any pro tips or tricks would be very useful for me and I'm sure many others with this same problem.

How to get past, “is so and so expecting your call?”

I don't want to lie, but I also want to talk to so and so and not leave a message with the receptionist.

How effective do you find the classic sales techniques like those explored in Cialdini's "Influence" in today's world?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 05:52 AM PST

I'm reading Cialdinis book "Influence" since I'm currently teaching myself sales copy (I'm a freelance copywriter who is trying to make the move into Direct Response - sales emails etc) and while I find it fascinating and wish I'd got myself a copy 8 years ago when I walked into my first sales job fresh out of university and failed miserably - I wonder how effective these techniques still are these days - especially in an online environment but just in general.

It might be because of my time spent in the advertising industry and me reading so much advertising and sales copy etc, but with re-targeted ads and all sorts of things, I can't help but feel like buyers and consumers must experience fatigue at this point, and a lot of these techniques have become so consistently used that people are wise to them and the second they see them are immediately suspicious.

I ask because this is how I feel - everyone is trying to sell a course online these days, so if I'm ever reading an article or watching a video that explains something, the first whiff I get of sales technique or language, I immediately close it and walk away - I'm so tired of being sold to when I am looking to be informed (especially because I often feel tricked - the old clickbait, "read this to find out x, y, z but actually here's a vague outline that doesn't explain x, y, z at all so buy my course to find out what you came here to read in the first place")

Now of course that's partly me being a jaded cynical bastard and partly these people being greasy snake oil shucksters, but I was wondering what your experiences were with this

    • Do you find that as long as the product is good, you can successfully integrate these classic sales techniques easily into your pitch?

    • Or do you find yourself having to use or construct newer techniques?

    • Are people still receptive to the traditional techniques as long as they're sold well and come across (and turn out to be) genuine?

    • Am I in the minority for being so suspicious of everyone?

    Fine Dining or Sales?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 11:46 AM PST

    Looking for an opinion here.

I'm looking at an opportunity to move to Phoenix, where I'll have no living expenses other than gas and food for 6 months. I have a 100% guaranteed job at a top level steakhouse (~$100k), or I can Branch out and try sales.

Currently I'm working in supply chain as an analyst, but can move into sales at my company's Phoenix location. Sales job will be $40k + bonuses. Likely honored than 55k.

    Age wise, I'm 23.

Not sure if I should take the easy money in what I know now or take the gamble and try out the sales gig.

Help crafting email on behalf of our CEO?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 07:36 AM PST

Hey boys and girls, really quick question here. I've been in the process of trying to with this massive RFP for our company. We've done great with it and there's a tons of buying signs.

Now, things have stalled with procurement and one of the champions for the last 2 weeks. I'm not too concerned, unless they straight up lied to me about winning - but my CEO and I agree that he should send a quick email to them (he was involved in the presentation, etc so not an unfamiliar face).

The plan would be to have it be a gentle nudge, coming from the CEO basically saying/asking - what can he do to make this work now?

We've obviously gone back and forth with them about pricing, sharpening pencils, and all that fun stuff - but I'd love for this email to just be a nice tipping point for them.

Does anyone have any suggestions or wording you'd suggest?

    Thanks guys!

    The Nut (maybe NSFW)

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 10:55 AM PST

"Hey, hey dad, come here. So dad, if you were watching a baseball game.. And the batter steps up to the plate, but every time the ball gets thrown he doesn't swing, would you be very impressed?"

"Well I probably wouldn't keep watching the game"

This was a real life conversation my buddy in finance had, because he isn't selling one product. Identity theft... This exchange was between owner and the PHD (poppa has a dealership).

Buddies numbers are fucking astounding right now. 2200 a copy after around 20 deals. But you know, good is just never quite good enough in a world full of scum bags.

To this I poise this question.

If you were sucking dick. Just fucking getting at it. Deep throating that shit like it's your fucking job. But you just could not get that dick to nut, what would you do?

I suggest you invest in a nice pair of knee pads. You might be here awhile

Cold Emailing - What should one do when many people show interest but never respond to replies?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 04:52 AM PST

    Hey r/sales,

I've been doing quite a bit of cold emailing lately and I've gotten a pretty healthy response rate (10% of emails sent).

The service I'm selling is for Instagram influencers so cold emails are one of the only ways to reach these people.

Most of these responses are people saying that they are interested in hearing more about what I have to offer but when I respond to them, the vast majority of the time I never get a response back and when I do people are very hesitant to schedule a meeting.

How would all of you go about responding to the initial reply from prospects?

Would you guys do followups? How and how many?

Is it normal for so many people to express interest only to have them never respond again?

    One final note:

It is possible that my email address has been blacklisted and that emails go directly to spam, so it is possible that my responses to their replies are getting sent to spam but I have no way of knowing.

Is excessive profanity common in the sales space [Saas]

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 10:32 AM PST

I work for a pretty large lead gen company. Not trying to bitch here more over reflect. Alot of the managers here swear day in and day out. The profanity is just absurd imo and it really makes a corporate environment feel like a confederate hickville. The swearing doesnt really relate to yelling at people (although it can), but its mainly just that they cant express their feelings about clients processes etc without calling people bitches, telling everyone to fuck themselves, or to suck a dick.

I come from a background outside of sales but I definitely see the lack of communication skills carrying over to the SDR team in their phone calls. Just out of curiosity, how common is this or am I just in a toxic environment?

My customer from prev job is customer of deskmate at new job.

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:39 AM PST

Hey, this is actually, literally 'asking for a friend'. I'm a month or so into my car dealership sales career, as well as my buddy "R".

This morning R heard the guy sitting next to him talking to Jim (phone), in the early stages of buying. Jim was a longtime loyal customer of R when R was doing wholesale car sales. R feels that Jim would happily switch to buying from R, if Jim knew that R had recently switched to selling cars here.

We're new. We don't know the best way through this.

Options as I see it: - Let it go. Miss the customer (at least this time). Stay out of possible conflict. - Talk to a manager. Perhaps they have an idea. - Talk (off site) to the customer. May create a weird "Oh, I don't want to work with this guy anymore, I want to work with R." from the customer. - Talk to the deskmate, though I don't think he'd be happy-willing to let the customer go.

    Thoughts?

    Fiscal Year End Database?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 10:23 AM PST

Hey all - I was wondering if anyone was aware of a database that lists companies by their fiscal year end. I had one of those "You're calling at the perfect time!" calls the other day, and would love to be able to ONLY call people where that could be a response. Anyone know if anything like this exists?

Need advice and critique on our current sales general strategy.

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 09:39 AM PST

Have an online incorporation service, been providing it for 15+ years at my consulting firm but it's gained enough traction to be a stand alone company.

Dropped pricing structure significantly to compete (beat or match) leading competitors.

Our pipeline includes leads generated as follows:

    • Existing repeat clients
    • Google and FB Ads
    • Partnerships with Startup Incubators
    • Partnerships with attorneys, CPA's and other related service providers.
    • Startup Ingnitors - Comm based sales with paid presentations. Developed small group in SoCal and Mexico City and would like to replicate in other cities.
    • Website free consultation and contact features.

Leads are contacted by email and by phone. It's easy to gauge from the first opening lines in the conversation if they're just browsing or have an immediate need for the service. We provide them with information explained in simple terms that are easy to remember.

That's it for now. Strategy has created so far a steady stream of about 100 visitors a day to the website in the first month. Paid Conversions tend to take at least a phone call or back and forth emails.

For the month of February planning to add live customer support to website, either chat box or phone number or both.

Any comments/reality checks highly appreciated as we scale up this service. Thanks!

Anyone experience or deal with low key racism when speaking with a client?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 09:34 AM PST

Salesmen themselves tend to not be as racist because the only color they care about is green (if their American).

However DM's can be, and really only want to work with a person of their cultural background.

Sales is also about getting someone to like you regardless of if they need the product or not. Having a different skin color can be a barrier in this and can add a whole other hurdle during your pitch.

Have any of you folks run into this? How did you deal with it? Did you close?

Applying to jobs before I'm available -- when to tell them?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:56 AM PST

I am looking for jobs in SaaS sales as an SDR. I've never had a sales job. However, I won't actually be able to work until May or June. I've had a lot of luck getting connected with hiring managers. They see my linkedin profile and seem eager to interview me. I've even spoken with a few third-party recruiters and they seem to like me.

When should I tell them that I am not available right now? If I tell them too early I'm afraid I won't make the connection, which I can use in the future, which is really my goal when applying early. If I tell them too late I will have wasted their time and they probably won't like me then either.

I have a 30-minute phone interview next week with a company I really want to work for. It's a ping-pong-table-and-free-bike-storage-style tech company in a tall building downtown. Really exciting for a guy like me who's worked a cash register his whole life. I really want them to know who I am when they do their next round of hiring.

How can I make this connection and show them who I am without blatantly withholding this information until the end of the interview?

How much of a haircut would you take to move into SaaS?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:50 AM PST

I just took a call w a recruiter who was trying to hire me for a remote role w a small/medium sized publicly traded SaaS company.

I'm familiar with their product, and they have great glassdoor reviews, checks all the boxes, etc.

I told her I'd have to think abt it though, mainly because their OTE is about 30k lower than my current roles.

their initial package looks like: 75k base, 150k OTE, possible 180k 'all in' when considering equity and RSU options.

my current role: 35k base (horrible i know), 180k OTE.

I made 200k last year, and i expect anywhere from 250 to MAYBE* 300k if i can hit presidents club.

that being said, recruiter told me if i have a killer year, i could make over 200k first year at the role. she told me they also have an enterprise position in the company with OTE 300k, which i could grow into if i do well in the first role.

any thoughts or advice here? has anyone taken less pay to work SaaS?

    Outside sales..

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 07:29 AM PST

What's some of the more fun outside sales roles, that give you flexibility of schedule and offers livable wages (maybe a little salary)?

Have been doing inside sales for 10+ years now, (Cell phones and automobiles) it seems even inside sales is turning into a form of outside sales, so why not go all in on one? It seems every year I worked harder with more stress for less money.

    Thanks in advance.
