PSA: How to properly handle PM spammers advertising "trading groups"

Recently we have received reports of /r/wallstreetbets and /r/investing and /r/stockmarket users receiving unsolicited private messages advertising Discord servers, trading groups, or other shitty market-related services that require an entry fee and/or monthly subscription cost.

These messages are spam and we consider these assholes to be scammers. Full stop. (Here is a previous post with more details regarding this topic.)

Unsolicited PMs of this nature violate both Reddit and Discord ToS. You are welcome to notify us by sending us modmail, but if you want to help us end this issue:

Feel free to direct any further concerns or questions to modmail.

Please, if you don't feel like reporting the PM yourself feel free to upload a screenshot of the PM to Imgur and send it to us moderators. We will notify Discord and Reddit for you.

I am basically stealing this post from /r/wallstreetbets. Thank you /u/SwineFluPandemic - I am making some small edits. I figure a few of the larger investing subreddits should work together to remove this.

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:12 AM PST

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Buffett: Between stocks and bonds for the next 10 years I would choose the S&P 500 'in a second'

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 05:02 AM PST

Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett says that given a choice between stocks and bonds over the next 10 years, he'd put his money in equities.

"If I had a choice today for a 10-year purchase of a 10-year bond at whatever it is ... or buying the S&P 500 and holding it for 10 years, I'd buy the S&P," Buffett said.

Why Buffett recommends S&P 500 instead of a world stock portfolio?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 11:45 PM PST

Are there any intrinsic reasons to Buffett's philosophy on always betting on the American economy? and is that something the simple retail investor should follow as opposed to simply buying the world total stock market (i.e: US, DM (Europe) and Emerging)?

What are some pros and cons to the Buffett approach of not diversifying too much as opposed to other investors recommendation to always aim for global diversification?

Would anyone ever consider investing in Rolexes? (Actual watches)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 10:46 PM PST

I know this forum tends to favor more traditional investments. However I do think actual Rolexes, if you know what models to look for, can be a solid investment.

I've been following the market closely for at least 2 years now and a price increase or 10% in that time isn't crazy. I've actually debated buying and keeping some watches if I could find them for the right price.

    Thoughts?

    S&P 500 at 2800

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 03:51 AM PST

The S&P is flirting with 2800 again this week. There have been several occasions in the last year (March, October, November and December) where rallies have reached this level only to peter out. People are adept at picking out paterns and ascribing meaning to them - this 2800 value has the appearance of a resistance point. I wonder if this tendency of recent market rallies to stall out at 2800 might be indicative of some underlying issue, some psychological/emotional reaction on the part of investors, or if this just the product of random chance.

What do you folks think? Are we more likely to have our current rally end at this point based on our recent past?

Maybe this is a mindless and silly topic but I'm tired of reading about Warren Buffett

Lyft valuation, IPO thoughts and a fun question!

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 08:05 PM PST

IPO roadshow scheduled for ~ 2 weeks and Reuters values them between 20-25b.

There's a lot of articles talking about the IPO but none of them really saying much.

What's our collective knowledge on this? Any different thoughts on valuation?

What does your crystal ball say about market action after the IPO? /s

Last question and most fun: if you had VC$ in Lyft that payed out in stock shares at IPO: do you sell or hold?!!

Just go for the S&P or try to beat it?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 03:29 AM PST

So, I am invested in just my 4 best ideas for accelerated growth, but sooner or later I will want to diversify (as my portfolio value grows).

I was thinking about just adding the S&P to my 4 best ideas to keep it simple, but perhaps I should select a handful of fairly low risk stocks (to add more safety) and try to beat the market average.

    What do you think?

Warren Buffett says if you invested $10,000 in the S&P 500 in 1942, you'd have $51 million today (CNBC)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 05:23 PM PST

    • Billionaire investor Warren Buffett told CNBC on Monday that Berkshire Hathaway's chief stock pickers, Ted Weschler and Todd Combs, have failed to beat the S&P 500.
    • Still, many people associate index fund investing with resignation.
    • That attitude can be costly, said Christopher Cordaro, chief investment officer of RegentAtlantic, a Morristown, New Jersey, financial-planning firm.

Company I own stock in was aquired for cash

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 10:50 AM PST

ONCE was aquired today giving me a nice return overnight. My problem is i bought a lot of it in july which would make my gains short term. I am not sure how long it usually takes to setlle an acquisition but if it is before july is there anything i can do to have my gain considered long term rather than short. Might i be given Roche stock instead of cash? Thanks.
