What's your tone like on cold calls? Sales and Selling

What's your tone like on cold calls?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:33 AM PST

I'm still not where I wanna be when it comes to getting disco calls booked, and I feel the only thing I have left to fix is my tone.

Seems like most sales books/trainings tell you to match the tone of the prospect, which is typically what I do. But when a prospect is being bitchy/short with me, I dont exactly match their bitchy tone, but I'll be short and direct.

Do you guys always match the prospects tone no matter what? Or do you try to keep a more upbeat/friendly tone even if they don't reciprocate?

Also, if anyone has articles/books on how to improve tone, that'd be great. Thank you!

How do you deal with depression in sales?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 05:52 PM PST

For context, I own an IT company and am pretty skilled in my field but one thing I'm sure you all know is, owning a business is a sales role not an IT role. Even if it is an IT company.

So now the problem, I've suffered from chronic depression and severe social anxiety my entire life and in the past few years it's gotten worse. I don't want to go into the whole thing but basically I ended up with some brain damage and now I sometimes stumble over my words a bit and don't always make perfect sense, especially late in the day when I'm tired.

So those of you with these issues, how do you prospect? I want to door knock or even cold call but I just can't bring myself to do it. I got close a couple weeks ago but before I could pick up the phone the anxiety built up so much that I ended up going home and laying on the couch for nearly 36 hours.

    Startup struggling to generate Sales

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:11 AM PST

    Hey Guys,

I work for a Startup that produces a niche hardware product (~$2.5K price tag + plus a monthly subscription fee) that is mostly sold B2B. Our product enables customers to create digital content for games, VFX, VR etc.

Our main customer segments are indie developers, educational institutions and animation studios. However, we haven't seen the level of success we're looking for yet in the lead generation and sales part of our process, and I wanted to run our strategy by you to see if there are aspects of our strategy we could improve and gather some general feedback.

So far, we have been heavily reliant on digital marketing efforts mostly consisting of Google ads, social media ads, and online demos. Almost 90% of our traffic is paid. Once a lead comes in through our chat or email we try to offer a free online demo where we showcase the product. The conversion rate for these is around 20 - 25%. We are really struggling to generate enough qualified leads and sales are up and down, but generally, there is no positive trend to be found. Additionally, we've tried some cold emailing campaigns but the results were not convincing. We have a blog which is updated once a month with a high-polished user story. Besides that, we don't have much content out there.

Essentially I am interested in your opinion on:

    • What sales approach would you recommend for such a product and company? I recommended a more content-driven approach including video tutorials, infographics, webinars, external product reviews etc. Essentially position the company as a thought leader within the space and educate potential customers.
    • Are there any other strategies you would recommend?
    • Is there anything else we are missing? I will have to say that we currently are running the marketing and sales team without a dedicated marketing manager so all efforts are somewhot trial and error and don't follow a dedicated plan or approach.

    Thank you so much already!

Being your own SDR/ADR (As an AE/AM)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:41 AM PST

Out of curiosity how many folks on this subreddit are essentially their own SDR/ADR (as an AE/AM)? When I say this I mean that for example your company does not have an SDR or ADR role and it falls on the AM/AE to generate ALL the leads to keep their pipeline going.

Just got into car sales and was wondering how much I'm getting screwed.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:49 AM PST

As the title states, just got into the world of selling cars. My first day I sold a car $4,000 over sticker plus warrantied and every check mark you can think of. I was ecstatic thinking about how much money I was about to make just off one sale. The next day, my manager brings me into the office to tell me that they don't do commission. That it's by units only. I made $5 off that sale. I got no front or back end commission. I feel as if they didn't talk about this until after I was hired and sold a car on purpose. Has anyone heard of this? I don't want to work for a company that is taking money from me. If anyone can look over this plan, that would be much appreciated. https://imgur.com/a/XIqqQii

    Questions to ask in training

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:15 PM PST

I start my first full time job in a couple weeks as a BDR for a cyber security company. I just graduate college 2 months ago so I'm excited about this opportunity. What are some good questions I can ask in my training for the first few weeks that might not be super obvious? I don't have any experience at this so I want to make the most out of the training and I'm sure that will be enhanced through some good questions.

    Sales Representative for PornHub?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 05:05 PM PST

So it looks like MindGeek, the owner of the world's largest pornsites, and famously pornhub, are recruiting sales people:

Would this be an easy sale? Or incredibly difficult because of the stigma.

    Interviewing for First 'Sales' Job

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:19 AM PST

Basically recruiting/scheduling for people who have shown interest in a job opportunity. Catch is it's 1099 for them. I'd be paid hourly with some incentives. Interviewer said it's about 200 warmed calls a day and all I have to do is get them to set an appointment with the actual recruiter.

I feel like the in person interview went well. They're calling me today to run the little script they gave me. I'm confident in my communication abilities over the phone, so I'm not worried, it's just new territory for me.

Sorry if I'm not giving much information. I'm new to this type of environment, but I'm excited to learn. Any help is appreciated!

Anyone know how to export a report to excel in Salesforce?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:00 AM PST

Exactly as the title says. I have a report I want to get into DiscoverOrg but I can't for the fucking life of me find the option in Salesforce. It should be in the drop down next to the Run Report button, right? Can't find it.

Does showing up to a prospect's office work?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:41 AM PST

I often hear this strategy still being used as a, what I would call desperate, attempt. But I haven't had more than 5+ years of sales experience. Perhaps it depends on the region but isn't security often a concern especially at the enterprise level? Would love to hear some experienced salespeople's opinions, thoughts, experiences.

Interested in pivoting career to Sales and want to learn more

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:27 AM PST

I'm interested in pivoting my career to Sales, but I'm confused about some things and I haven't found much info online. I'm hoping this sub can help out.

I graduated from a big ten school and spent about a year in sell-side Investment Banking/M&A. There's a lot of finance and other work involved but basically I worked on 2-3 person teams to sell our clients' companies. Usually they were anywhere from $1M to $100M deals and all industries but lots of tech and software. I'm used to commission/bonus based earning and didn't necessarily have quotas but did have targets. On an individual level I crushed it and had a higher number of deals under my belt in that year than 99.99% of people in my position nationwide. It was a cool experience but I had some issues with my firm so I left to work at my Alma Mater in an unrelated role and now I'm left kind of burned out on the industry. I have a poor undergraduate record (really low grades and less than stellar school for that field) so getting back in at a reputable firm has been tough too. That industry cares a lot about pedigree. Add to that I've always been a poor cultural fit.

So now I'm looking into Sales as I've always been interested in it and I'm really attracted to the eat what you kill environment. There's a lot of factors that influenced how good/bad a role was in my old industry so I'm not sure if Sales is similar?

I'm not interested in remaining in Finance. I gather that Enterprise Software seems to be where the money is to made but how specific is this? Are Oracle and Salesforce and the like where you have to be to make real money or can reps at small companies make good money too? What are the challenges of working at a smaller company if any?

How much does locale matter? Do you stand to make more being in SF than some rural town? How much does industry focus come into play? Is selling to some industries more lucrative than others?

What's the lifestyle like? I'm coming from an industry with high stress and very long hours. That didn't bother me too much, but the uptight Ivy League culture was tough.

Finally, what role would someone with my background expect? SDR? What's a good comp figure at the entry level assuming you're not exactly at Salesforce or Oracle or in NY/SF?

Sorry if these are dumb questions. Just looking to learn.

    Thanks in advance!

When is good time to reach out to a potential employer on LinkedIn?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:17 AM PST

I applied to their job posting on ziprecruiter and have received emails saying that they have viewed my application 3 times. Also, received an email from ziprecruiter saying they have given my application a "thumbs up" but I haven't heard anything directly from the company.

When is a good time to reach out to the person in charge of talent acquisition? It's been less than a week since I've applied. I know it hasn't been long but I also don't want to get lost in all of the other applications.

It's a SaaS company, I'll be responsible for marketing and also some sales (50/50).

I'm wondering what kind of attire you'd seem appropriate?

Sales Cycle, Deal Size and Prospecting

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:23 AM PST

So there is a lot of variance in sales. Some people sell $100 products 10x per day, others sell $100,000 products once per quarter.

Given that much variance have we ever come up with a formula to determine whether or not buying lead lists vs prospecting is worth the time? If your deal size is so small and your cycle time longer, it seems ideal to just be cold dialing the largest possible volume. Where as if you have a larger deal size with a longer sales cycle, prospecting for more ideal clients is ideal.

    So where's the cutoff?

    Request for proposals?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:43 AM PST

I run a small agency and we've developed a new tool that we want to pitch to universities. We're throwing around ideas of what to charge, but we're thinking between $10K-25K based on the value it can provide. We know that universities do RFPs, but we offer something that no university would have an RFP out for.

What does the process look like instead? I don't have experience with RFPs, but it seems like they're used when the company knows they need a service. But in this case, they don't know they need our service.

Any help is appreciated! It's difficult to find information online unique to universities and how to pay for services.

Need some advice on a job

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:39 AM PST

So i found this listing on Indeed for a position that seemed perfect for me. Went to their website and it doesnt really give any details on a daily routine. So check reviews. Reviews look good. So i applied.

Hours later, got a text and an email requesting a call and possible interview. I called and asked "What does an average day of work look like for this position?" I was told very vaguely that i would start as entry level customer service and be trained to move up and i would work some days in office and others in the clients locations talking with customers and helping spread their brand."

Even after talking to the person, i still have no clue what I would be doing.

Anyone ever heard of this company or have a clue what they do?

    http://greenmeadowsexecutives.com

I even did a WhoIs on their domain name to see if they were under a larger firm and they seem to have paid for Domain Name Anonymity services.

Thanks everyone for the help and advice!

On a cold call is it smart to leave a voicemail or hang up and follow up with an email instead?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:38 AM PST

Just curious because I feel like leaving a voicemail you cant leave to much info or else they will get bored and also be expecting you calls and may not answer

How did sales change you as a person?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 05:44 PM PST

An older acquaintance of mine used to be a social wreck, totally inept in social situations before he went in sales out of college. However, after a while, the daily doses of getting out of his comfort zone during his job totally transformed him. He completely made a 180 degree with his social life and is now making a killing. "Bro, I used to be such a bitch in college haha" is what he told me recently lol.

Any stories on how sales changed your life and how you went through a major transformation would be much appreciated :)

New Freight Broker - Please Help

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:25 AM PST

I'm an account executive working for a freight broker (FTL). Not carrier sales - going after shippers. How do I get shippers to give me loads or at least give me a chance to quote? I'm new to the industry.

Is cold calling what most people do all day? Who am I supposed to call? Load planners, Transportation Managers, Logistics Director? Can you guys give me some job titles to look for. -- People at my company spam emails all day long, some of them send 100 emails asking for loads and get zero replies back - brutal. People seem to be scared of the phone, I just don't know who to call... any advice would be great.

"Please remove me from your contact list" -- polite reply or feedback that my sales are spammy

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 09:58 PM PST

Been trying a new sales approach. My goal is to be less presumptuous so I don't waste anyone's time, so I've gotten a lot more targeted in prospecting and more personal in my messages. When I sent the below message, I got back a quick reply "Not interested. Please remove me from your contact list."

Is this simply a polite reply and I should keep calm and carry on, or an indication that my messages are spammy and I should revise?

Just one data point so far but I wanted to see what you all thought.

    ---

    Hi X,

I noticed you [work with creative agencies on digital campaigns] for [X], so I hope I'm reaching the right person here.

Over the last 6 years we've helped a dozen clients like [relevant clients to prospect's niche] create powerful social marketing campaigns (to the tune of millions of views and press) with video remix, and we think we can help brands build their social following with the same process.

I thought of y'all because [video remix (beyond our main format on the channel) fits with the work you're doing on [X's] Insta/Twitter.]

We make the content, then seed it to our influencer network. It's how we built our brand, and how we've helped our clients.

But I want to eliminate blind spots, so before I go further, I just want to understand so I don't waste your time: Are you ramping up social video this year, and is it all in house?

    Thanks for taking a look!
