Unwanted mental health facility visit results in 15k bills. Health insurance does not cover mental health. Advice? [US-MO]

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 10:26 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I am looking for advice on how to tackle many bills.

Situation: At the end of October I told my psychiatrist that I was suicidal a few days previous, but not at that time. I was being honest. I was hoping he would change my anti-depressants. Instead he called the police to escort me to the ER. From there they transported me by ambulance to a cognitive disorders facility. I repeatedly stated that I did not want to be there. Each time I was told it was against medical recommendation. I stayed in fear that it may somehow hinder treatment in the future (IDK- not in the right state of mind obviously).

My current insurance is a short term medical plan. They have told me that they do not cover mental health what-so-ever. I obtained the plan when I became a full time student. I called a help line that my last jobs HR insurance woman suggested. I told them about my depression and they proceeded to give me insurance that does not cover mental health.

I am 26. I had to drop out of school because of the state of my mental health. I have moved back in with my parents.

I have been slapped with bills that total to about 15k. I already have school debt. Please help me. Are there any resources I should know about? Any suggestion is welcome.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

    Depressing experience with Covered California.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 06:02 PM PST

I know I shouldn't expect much from this system, but damn am I feeling miserable right now.

Earlier this year I was unemployed, so I decided to sign up for Medi-Cal. That went through without a hitch. However, soon after I got a simple retail job and after updating my income levels on the website, I was informed that I was unlikely to be eligible for Medi-Cal anymore. Alright, I thought, makes sense so far. All I have to do is sign up for one of the Covered California plans.

After navigating the complete mess of a website, feeling like I was filling the same application five times, I got to the insurance marketplace screen and picked out a health and dental plan. There was an option on the site to pay my first premiums, and I did so. Everything seemed to be going smoothly. I received mail confirmation of ny payments from both insurance companies; they even sent me my ID cards. I thought I could finally relax.

Then suddenly I receive an email: "As requested, your plan will be terminated on December 31." I was perplexed, to say the least. I call the insurance company's phone number. They tell me that as the middleman, Covered California had issued the request for my plan to be terminated. I call Covered California. They say that for some reason, Medi-Cal was waiting for some sort of additional information from me, and without it, was able to stop me from proceeding with my Covered California plan.

I reviewed my inbox at Covered California, and I still do not know what info they want; the only message they sent to me was a message that tells me that I "may be" still eligible for Medi-Cal (something I doubt since they already told me I wasn't) and nothing else but to essentially wait for more info (which they never sent, only the same message verbatim several more times.)

The call operator at Covered California directed me to call my county's Social Services office, which has really been the crown jewel of frustration in this story. For the past several days I've been trying to speak with someone there, but even after getting past the automated system to the queue to speak to an operator, I get a canned message saying that the call volume is too high to even put me on hold, and an automatic end to the call. Today I finally get placed into the queue, and after ten minutes of hearing the same looped messages and music over and over, I hear a single call tone... and then the call ends.

I'm basically a stupid 20 year old kid; I've never done something like this before. It's just so frustrating to feel like I'm going at this to the best of my ability only to have nothing to show for my efforts. I haven't even gotten the money I paid back yet. I'm just lucky the payments were very small. I can only imagine how hard it must be for someone who actually urgently needs insurance. I just wanted to vent my woes and hopefully get some help, or failing that just some validation that I'm not alone in this mess. Thank you for reading.

Looking For Advice On Auto Insurance Process (Edit: Updated Title)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:51 AM PST

    Background

To give background before the actual insurance questions, I am in Texas and am typically the person in the family that others go to for finance/academic type questions. All of the relevant family members that I will mention live in Louisiana. The auto accident occurred in Louisiana. I'm basically trying to figure out exactly what steps my family members need to pursue in order to survive this accident. Most of my family lives paycheck to paycheck and none of us have been in this type of accident before. My nephew (the driver) is only 25 and I'm worried about this accident being a financial burden on him for the rest of his life.

    Actual Accident

This was a 2 vehicle accident with 4 people in vehicle "A" and 1 person in vehicle "B". My nephew was the driver of vehicle "B". Both of the vehicles were totaled to the point that it was called in as a "vehicle crash fatality" (per the police report). All individuals were taken to the hospital with 2 individuals in vehicle "A" and my nephew in vehicle "B". All individuals were discharged from the hospital within 4 days but with pretty serious injuries. My nephew broke both his femurs and his wrist and injuries to the other driver were slightly worse.

The police report did come to the conclusion that the driver of vehicle "A" was at fault. He crossed the center line and hit vehicle "B" which was traveling in the opposite direction. Based again on the police report, he is charged (or will be charged???) first degree vehicular negligent injuring (LA 14:39.2) along with other charges. My nephew (drive in vehicle "B") was not faulted or cited at all according to the police report and did give consent at the hospital for a toxicology test and was cleared of any impairment.

Both vehicles had insurance. Vehicle A's driver is not the same as the person who owns the vehicle (vehicle registered to driver's grandmother). My nephew in Vehicle B is both the registered owner and insurance holder. My nephew does has health insurance that he literally signed up for 2 days before and took effect the day before the accident (had recently changed jobs and was slow on getting paperwork in).

    Since The Accident

Not sure how relevant this part will be, so please ignore if this makes no difference in the process. I was able to find the other driver on social media and basically learn some things over the past month to give us an idea of his situation. He was definitely more injured and all persons in his vehicle required medical treatment. He seemed to be between jobs, have custody issues, housing issues, and past criminal violations (which to be fair my nephew did too). He has not yet been officially charged as I have been checking the local sheriff's website for arrests on a regular basis.

His insurance is a "low budget" (not sure how to best phrase it) and we are guessing he will only have the legally required minimal coverage. My nephew's insurance is with Progressive. I am unsure of his limits but know he has full coverage. My nephew does not have any assets that he could be sued for and we don't expect the other driver to have any assets that could be sued for either. My mom is basically the family member who is helping my nephew out right now in terms of calling insurance, keeping track of paperwork, bringing him to doctor's visits, etc. The only thing she has heard from his insurance is that they haven't been in contact with the other driver yet.

    My Predicament And Questions

I understand the basic of how both health and auto insurance works, but am not familiar with the process that surrounds this type of serious accident with this amount of property damage and medical damage. I am also very concerned about my nephew as he did commit crimes in the past, did serve his time, and has turned his life around. He was gainfully employed with a vehicle and his first apartment.

My family is able to cover his living expenses, rent, insurance, etc until he is back on his feet. His employer is holding his job for him and we think he will be able to return to work in the next 2 - 3 months. As far as we know, he is done with surgeries and just has lots of follow up doctor's visits and physical therapy in the future.

The scary part that has led me to posting here. The medical bills are starting to arrive. The first one came last week from the ambulance company for $28,000. I know this is just the first of many to come. I know my mom has been talking to Progressive and that she maybe talked to a lawyer. Being 8 hours away makes it hard to know exactly what is happening on a day to day basis since we are still only 1 month out from this accident.

I guess my basic questions are:

    1. What steps should we be taking to minimize the financial burden on my nephew?
    2. What steps should we NOT be taking to minimize the financial burden on my nephew?
    3. Just any advice, tips, etc that will help my nephew not be financially burdened with this for a significant part of his life.

Thanks for any and all responses in advance. I thought about posting in r/legaladvice but this seems better suited for this forum as we are mostly worried about dealing with the insurance companies and not any criminal charges.

    treatment period just 90 days

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 12:55 AM PST

Hello everybody, I've got a question about my insurance. I want to do a 5-6 months course of accutane (drug for severe acne) and I was so happy to start it but according to my insurance plan the treatment period can only be 90 days. Is there any way I could still take accutane (you have to do a blood test once a month) without paying for it myself? Thank you very much :)

Can maybe my doctor write a note that this medication is absolutely necessary for me or could I call my insurance and convince them that I absolutely need it? Does anybody have experience with that?

Looking for advice on Long Term Disability Insurance

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 12:22 AM PST

I am a Handyman who is basically self employed, I started doing fix it jobs for people in my neighborhood, and it expanded from there. I am not incorporated as a business or anything like that. I am getting more and more work from word of mouth, and each year my income is growing. Being a Handyman is the only thing I know. Recently one of my friends was injured at his job, and another came down with cancer. Both are out of work, and having a hard time financially. I realized that I did not have any safety net if the same happened to me, and I heard about long term disability insurance. I am totally new at this, previously the only insurance I had was on my work truck. I am seeing a bunch of companies in google searches, but I am a bit lost. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a company or policy that I can get to cover about $1500 of income a month if something happens to me, so that my family will be taken care of if I cannot work. Also I would need that coverage that would have a benefit period to retirement age, in case I am seriously hurt or sick. I am seeing a lot of 5 year plans, but I am in my mid 30s, and am worried about something putting me out of work for longer than that. I would really appreciate any advice anyone may have.

Independent brokers, what software do you use for managing your business?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 10:23 AM PST

I help run a very small brokerage and we're trying to figure out a way forward. What kinds of software do other brokers use? How do you manage transactions, payments, receipts? How do you manage your customer files and policies? Accounting and billing? Are there any good management systems for commercial auto, particularly towing and trucking? How do you handle filling out carrier applications that don't use a web rater?

I'm sure there are all kinds of ways to get these things done. I'd like to hear how your business tackles them.

[Health Insurance] Help with charges with a previous insurance company?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 09:05 PM PST

I wasn't quite sure how to summarize my issue in the title, but I'll try keeping things short....

In March of last year I was able to sign up for insurance through my previous employer. They told me it would take about 2 months to send the card out, which at the time was fine, but I never received it. I spoke to HR and they got another one issued to me, but while I was waiting for that second one (some time in July) I had a doctor's visit I couldn't have avoided. I went, and they told me I didn't need to worry about my insurance information; that I could wait until I got the card in the mail, and just bring it in with me to my next appointment (which is in January - a few weeks from today). I asked if they wanted me to call in with the information when I got the card in the mail, but they waved me off and repeated that I should just bring it with me in January and it wouldn't be a problem. So I believed them. I don't have a lot of experience or education with this stuff.

The problem is, I switched jobs. I don't work for that company anymore. I do have a new job and new insurance (with the same insurance company, ironically), but I don't know what to do about the prior charge. I still have the old insurance card (which I hadn't actually gotten until October) and everything, but... I don't think that helps anything much.

Is there any way the coverage can still apply to the old insurance? Or will I have to pay it myself? I'm not sure what to do...

Progressive claims they can't negotiate on repair estimate, how to move forward?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:25 PM PST

I was recently rear ended in a relatively minor accident where I was declared not at fault. The other party's insurance(Progressive) referred me to one of their shops where they gave the car a sub-par repair estimate based on the damage. I want to take a check payout for the damage so I'm interested in getting the estimate as close to what it looks like it would take me to adequately return my car to the condition it was in previously on my own.

I brought my car to another shop for another opinion, one from a dealer network I'd had good experiences with and who happened to be the only certified collision center by my car maker within 100 miles of my home. This person took more time and took note of all the damage I pointed out and came back with an estimate over 3X of the insurance company's. Looking at the estimates it looks like they're factoring in respraying the entire bumper as the impact cracked the paint across the top part of the bumper cover, while the insurance company's shop just wants to respray the most obviously damaged areas and ignored me showing the other resulting damage to them during the estimate. The certified shop also seemed to have a better idea of parts costs due to one time use trim pieces and one time use fasteners that the estimator pointed out to me. Additionally, the paint on my car is a tri-coat fleck paint and the insurance company's repair shop estimator brushed that off when giving me an estimate and estimated standard per hour paint costs.

I sent my claims agent this new estimate but she just kept shutting me down saying that she couldn't even consider it. I asked to speak to someone else and she said there was no one else who could help. I tried calling different numbers from progressive but I always end up redirected to her voicemail box. I asked if i could go to another shop in their network to get another estimate and she insists that it would be the same because they use the same criteria. I would just like to know what the best avenue to pursue would be in order to try and get the repair money I feel that I am entitled to in order to make me whole.

Should I file a claim with my insurance company? Would that make my rates go up? I'm planning on calling the insurance company's original shop directly and seeing if I can maybe get an estimate with a different person. A friend was also telling me about the state insurance commissioner's office and that they had sorted out a similar issue for him, would that me worth a try in this situation (I live in GA by the way)? I'm just frustrated and trying to avoid wasting more time playing phone tag and dealing with this than I already have.

Thanks for anyone who took the time to read, I tired googling but couldn't really find any clear answers on how to make them negotiate on non-medical issues outside of suing the insurance company, but that doesn't seem necessary or feasible for this 1-2k repair job.

    Advice about coverage for baby

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:55 AM PST

So..., Some background- I'm 22 weeks pregnant and stuck in a job I hate before I have my baby/go on leave at the end of April. I need the insurance to have my baby, and then need the benefits until maternity leave is over so my baby can get his shots and everything. I plan on quitting after my maternity leave is over. My husband works full time but doesn't have insurance through his job- I have been the insurance provider.

My job makes me miserable. I work over 40 hours a week on my feet all day, despite my multiple requests to cut my hours due to fatigue and pregnancy. I drive 30+ minutes there and back to make like $12/hr just for the benefits...

So basically- I'm quitting after my leave is up because my husband makes enough for me to not have to work a job I hate full time, I'm just going to waitress part-time to make extra cash. But we would be left with no insurance. I can sign the baby up for CHIP, but myself and my husband would be left with no coverage. I honestly don't really care if I have health insurance- I only care that the baby is covered. Does anyone have any experience with CHIP or this kind of situation???? Is there any option for us to get coverage?? I live in Texas so I'm afraid the ACA is going to get sacked, and I don't know if any of their plans are affordable enough for us. We don't qualify for Medicaid, but we do qualify for expanded Medicaid- texas just isn't an expanded Medicaid state. I feel so stressed and just have no idea how to get myself and my baby and husband covered.....

Double coverage and coordination of benefits

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 02:01 PM PST

My husband is now covered by two (very good) PPO insurance plans. Per my employer regulations he can be on my insurance, but must use his as primary. Per his employer, I can never be on his plan. We recently had a child, and when I added baby, I discovered that I pay the same amount no matter how many family members I add. So DH is now covered by both plans, and me and the baby are covered by just mine.

So here is my question. Due to having a baby, I met the family yearly deductible of $700 in 2018. Dh got sick and went to the doctor on 12/28... it was the first doctor visit all year for him., so he would still need to meet his $300 yearly deductible.

Am I correct in thinking that the doctor will submit to his insurance first, they will come back and say we owe $100 (or whatever the visit cost), because DH didn't meet his deductible. The doctors office would then submit that $100 bill to my insurance, and my insurance would pay the outstanding balance because we already met the yearly deductible on my account. ???????

Also his copay is $15, but mine is $20. Would we get a bill from the doctor for the $5 difference if my insurance ends up paying?

Is this the same proscess for dental, vision, and prescription?

    Thanks!

Open workers comp claim, Possibly going to be terminated from current employer.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 08:31 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm hoping that someone here might be able to explain the process when you are terminated with an open workers comp claim. I have been deemed partially permanently disabled and am currently waiting for the insurance company to receive the percentage rating from my doc. Without going in to too many details on the why's there is a possibility I will be terminated, unfortunately errors happen and I made one. Any insight or ideas you may have are much appreciated.

This should be easy. I'm looking for clarification as to what this term actually means.. "Comprehensive and Glass Coverage - $500 Deductible (Deductible does not apply to damaged safety glass)"

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:14 PM PST

I have a cracked windshield and this may be a dumb question. My insurance with State Farm is full coverage with $500 deductible and I'm Located in CT, USA. The website description of my glass coverage is what I have in the title:

**Comprehensive and Glass Coverage - $500 Deductible** (Deductible does not apply to damaged safety glass)

My car is a 2014 Mazda 3 where the windshield replacement would likely be under $500. Does that second line mean that the windshield, which I would assume counts as "safety glass", would be covered and I would not have to pay anything out of pocket?

I could of course just call my insurance agent but I would prefer to bother the fine people of reddit with my mundane questions. :)

[Health Insurance] Paid more than owed last month but BSBC is still saying we still owe ~$170

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:13 AM PST

Me and my son had separate insurance policies from the Marketplace through BCBS for 2018. The total of both of these policies, after our "premium tax credits", was $506/month. We paid our December coverage at the beginning of that month.

My daughter was born in the middle of December so I updated my 2018 application to have her included (which is what every marketplace representative said to do). Due to our income level and adding a 4th person to the household, our "premium tax credits" went up a good bit.

The new total of all 3 policies (mine, my son's, and my daughter's) after the "premium tax credits" now totalled $495 for the month of December, a difference of $11 in our favor. I thought "great, the money we had already paid in December would cover all of the policies for that month". However, BSBC is still stating we owe $173 for the new plan added in December.

It obviously doesn't add up and I'm not getting anyone from BCBS to comprehend what my issue is. I'm at my wit's end going in circles trying to get this resolved. Has anyone delt with this sort of issue and has any advice as to what to do?

I totalled my car last year, why has my auto insurance not gone up?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 04:06 PM PST

I was involved in an accident about a year ago (2018) and my car at the time was totaled out with the total pay off amounting to $13.5k. I had previously purchased it three months before the accident and it was a 2014 Mazda 3 touring. Since then I have bought insurance coverage twice for a period of six months each time and my premium has not gone up. The new (to me) car I purchased after is the same exact car but a one year later model and better trim. Which cost me a little more than the one that got totaled.

Why didn't my premium go up? Does credit affect your rates?

College Student Using Brooklyn Bought Car in Maryland

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:54 PM PST

I got a question about car insurance. I'm buying a car under my dad's name in Brooklyn, New York. We plan on getting the plate and insurance under the state of NY. But i am moving to Maryland for college, bringing the car with me. What should i do with the car insurance and plate?

Keep the insurance and the plate under NY,

Change insurance to MD and keep plate to NY,

Change both plate and insurance to MD after I move,

    Or Other.

I'm buying a car from a dealer, so I'm probably going to get a temporary license plate. My main concern is that the insurance wont cover the car since i'm moving to maryland. What should i do and what should i watch out for?

    RACQ v Me

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:29 PM PST

Background : Yes I'm at fault, very minor graze in a carpark, (seen more damage caused by a shopping trolley graze)... Passenger of vehicle stated that its her vehicle... Male occupant driving...

RACQ called me, 1; I stated, not going through insurance excess charges would exceed the damage caused... 2; I requested 3 quotes for cash settlement.... Request Denied by RACQ 3; Requested a photo of vehicle to compare with my photos, then stated if discrepancies exist I will pursue Court Action... 4; I clearly stated that excessive charges are demanded by RACQ I will pursue Court Action... 5; Q: If vehicle was being driven by uninsured driver can they still make a claim against me?

Big Question ❓ do I have a leg to stand on????

[ICBC] Senior parents with flawless driving record were hit from behind by a semi on a highway. They've been completely cleared of fault. Their car is totalled. ICBC is offering a flat $14,000.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:07 PM PST

I've been told that the insurance in British Columbia is so expensive because ICBC is perpetually in court with people. After being denied a rental car, denied massage therapy, and offered $14,000 for their car (evaluated by ICBC at $30,000 only two years prior), I think I understand why. Do you HAVE to sue ICBC to get anywhere? For example, my mom, still in pain, was told she'd be given $150 for her new BMW rims ($2000 for the set, six months old).

We're all just so confused. Together they've paid in the hundreds of thousands for insurance over their lives, and now that it's time they reap the benefit they're offered $14k. My dad has locked joints from a medical condition, my mother is fragile, my brother (in the rear most seat during the collision) will undoubtedly experience the side effects throughout his life. Any advice?

Brother hit an animal with car

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:13 AM PST

Hello! I'm posting for my brother (and on a throwaway account).

While driving home last night, he hit a "large, catlike" (his description) creature going about 70 mph. Most of the left side of his bumper is missing and some is hanging off. He was about a mile from home, decided not to stop, and kept driving.

He mentioned it to me and I of course suggested he take pictures and notify his insurance. But given he didn't stop and inspect the creature, or take pictures in the moment, what might he be looking at?

I'm not looking to try and get one over on insurance, but this isn't something I've dealt with before and I know he hasn't, so what is the best course of action? Should he take pictures now and notify insurance?

This happened in New Hampshire (also where he lives).

EDIT: Also wanted to note he says he can still hairs from the animal still stuck in the car.

AAA or Travelers for auto insurance?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:33 AM PST

I currently have Travelers auto insurance, and have a 1 year locked in policy with them instead of the usual 6 month policy. I pay about $140.00 a month for 1 car and it's me and my wife on the policy. I contacted my insurance agent and she recently gave me a quote with AAA for about $20 bucks cheaper a month than with Travelers. My question is how does AAA auto insurance compare with Travelers? With claims and customer service? Now $20.00 a month isn't a big difference, if I saved $60.00 a month or more I would definitely switch to AAA. But for a $20.00 difference I want to make sure there customer service is good and everything. Thanks for the help.

Mom's Car Insurance was Cancelled :(

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:24 AM PST

Mom's car insurance has been provided through a private agent using a major insurance provider. 6 months ago I paid the premium and told the agent that my mother was in a nursing home. The agent advised me that I needed to be placed as the primary driver and that was done.

6 months have passed and the insurance carrier decided to cancel the policy at the renewal date. The reason given was my mother was not in physical control of the car. I informed the agent during that time period that my mother passed away. The agent told me that the car could not be insured unless the title is in my name. The situation is: no will, I am sole heir, and it must go through probate.

Is there any way to insure a car where i am not on the title but i am the sole heir, while it goes through probate? Currently garage parked and not being driven.

So we have a platform that is about to launch that allows us to facilitate a very specific type of 'transaction' that allows User A to 'borrow' an item from User B. User B could be a large corporation or could be a smaller one or even an individual, depends on the state and country.

We want to offer an insurance option on these transactions (if you're familiar with Turo or AirBNB, think something like that) to allow each user to protect themselves in the event of damage, partial loss of use, or total loss.

There aren't that I can find, any current insurance companies that offer anything like this without us having a blanket General Liability policy and even then, since we are merely facilitating these transactions, that wouldn't cover us.

I considered a Fidelity or Surety Bond, but even then, how do we allow someone to file a claim on that security since it's in our name...

...so I started thinking about self insuring.

I am well aware of the risks.

I am well aware of the typical net worth of someone who self insures...

...however, again, we are merely acting as a third party and want to offer insurance through our platform.

Same as Turo, we will take a percentage (no we aren't facilitating vehicle use).

We will offer two types of coverages:

    1) Loss of Use in event the particular item was scheduled for use by other individuals

    2) Total replacement value (minus depreciation).

Our system allows for both users to upload pictures prior to use and after use and allows them to file a dispute in the event the item(s) are damaged. Being that this is a startup, it will be few and far between so I intend on handling the claims myself (I'm the CFO and my background is everything finance/fraud/credit/etc). At some point, we will have a separate person handle it that specializes in it, hopefully when we grow that large.

That leads me to my ultimate question:

How can we offer insurance, through our company directly, to two separate third parties, to 1) protect the person who is using the item from having to repay the entire replacement value and 2) protect the individual or company who is letting User A use their item.

Do we need to treat this like a security and have a certain amount of capital on hand based on the # of items that are currently being used?

Can we just treat each case as they come through and worry about paying for it provided there is enough capital in our account (there definitely is enough to cover hundreds of complaints at a time if it came to that).

tl;dr - OP has a new eCommerce platform and wants to self insure the 3rd party transactions on both sides through our company directly.

My insurance rates went up because I was a passenger in an accident, is this a normal thing or mistake?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 10:35 AM PST

So as the title states, I was the passenger in an accident recently, we were rear ended while waiting at a stop sign and I ended up going to the hospital to get checked out as I was pregnant at the time. I was not driving, I am not a driver on the persons insurance policy, and my health insurance covered the hospital visit so I did not file a claim.

Today I got a notice in the mail that my rates increased by $300 for the new year, because I was listed in an accident. the paperwork says "Accident - not at fault listed on xx/xx/xxxx - listed on CLUE."

I would understand a rate increase if I had been a driver, or at fault for the accident but I'm a bit miffed as to why my rates would increase for being a passenger in a vehicle that someone else insured and drove. Is this an error or normal in the world of insurance?

Auto Accident - Woman Is Asking me to Pay for Prior Damage

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 10:32 AM PST

A couple of weeks ago I was in a very minor car accident with a lady who was driving for Uber. This was around the 1st or 2nd week of December in Denver, CO. I was backing up into a parallel parking spot. As I was reversing, she stopped right behind me and I ran into her vehicle. I didn't see her pull up, I was going 5 mph or less. There was absolutely 0 damage to my car, my rear hook on my Jeep Wrangler hit her front bumper and created a hole in the right of her front bumper.

We got out and she had to tell her Uber passengers that she couldn't take them to their destination. The front of her car is absolutely WRECKED. Both head lights were messed up, the bumper is coming off on the end, her hood is bent; everything needed to be replaced. She proceeds to tell me that her best friend borrowed her car after her best friend had totaled her own car. While her best friend was borrowing her car, she had a bad crash. So she said not to worry about anything because she had an appointment to fix it the next day for the prior damage. We just swapped pictures of our licenses and moved on.

As it turns out she filed a claim and was able to find me. She said that "it is only fair" that I pay for the bumper and is requesting $700 plus labor costs. My insurance called me and we had a few different conversations about what she was claiming and how to move forward. I bought my Wrangler 4 weeks prior to the accident. Before I bought my car I switched to a different insurance that covered me as a driver for test driving cars and driving my roommates car as I didn't have my own car. That was supposed to cover me as a driver through the end of the year. My insurance is now telling me that because I purchased a new car but didn't notify Geico in time that I am no longer covered and they will not be helping me with any damage claims. They did however do a VIN background check and found evidence that her car was towed after an accident because it was a disabled vehicle after her best friend's accident.

I was thinking I would offer to pay for some of it, split it half and half with her best friend? Before I found out that I wasn't covered, she filed a claim with Geico that was over $3,000 which included all of the damage that was on her vehicle. Including damage to her freaking windshield! It can't be insurance fraud now that she's dealing with me directly.

She shouldn't have been driving with a vehicle that was unsafe for road conditions, right? And she definitely shouldn't have been driving for Uber? She has been texting me asking how she wants to handle the situation and I'm slightly at a loss for what to do. Should I be worried about what this would do to me legally if I was unknowingly driving without car insurance? How can she actually come after me?

Let me know if you need further information or photos.
