My main interest is sports (college basketball and football) and i like to write about them but don't see how to make $ off of it. When I was an underclassman I sold sneakers as a way to make money and I've thought of buying/reselling thrift clothes to make some side money. Any advice or ideas?

Do you think these questions will be effective in diagnosing where management is not meeting employees needs, or am i rocking the boat too much?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 10:11 PM PST

I work at a locally owned restaurant in a college town. I believe it has massive potential and i really want to invest myself into it and help it become something big because i believe in it's mission of clean food, sustainability, and community involvement. I want to create a mandatory (bad idea?) questionnaire so that the owners can see why their employees are upset, unmotivated, and quitting. I've talked with the owners and showed them some of these questions, but the owners seem very hesitant and insist that nobody will be happy all the time and that people will always think they deserve more. The owners do pay the employees very well, but they haven't done anything to improve communication or structure in a long time, and that is something that is desperately desired by all the employees (including myself).

Here is a rough draft for my questionnaire, let me know what you all think!

1.) These next few statements will rate from disagree strongly, disagree, neutral, agree, strongly agree. There will also be a few lines of text entry for elaboration:

    Our team communicates effectively

When a new rule or policy is created, i understand why i have to follow it

    I am satisfied with scheduling

    I was properly trained

I feel like my voice is heard

I specifically know who our team leaders are

I have the materials/equipment to do my job well

2.) These will be text based questions

    main position(s)?

What position do you enjoy most?

If you could have clarification about 1 rule or policy, what would you choose?

    What is your ideal schedule?

3.) These are some ideas for some get-to-know-you type questions. Our workplace is pretty hippy dippy and weird, and i believe the owners would love to know these types of things.

    What is your favorite movie?

    What is your favorite book?

    What is your favorite quote?

    Favorite chill band/musician?

    What are you passionate about?

    (end questions)

    What do you all think?

Wanting to start a rental service. Any mobile POS services offer refundable deposits?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:25 AM PST

Looking to start a business that would offer a rentable product while on site. Ive already come up with pricing $5/half hour, $25/day, but was wondering how to deal with security deposits? Its not a large charge as it should only be a $25-$50 deposit just to make sure i get the item back. Any way to deal with this in a mobile POS such as square or paypal here?

I was looking and paypal has "authorize and capture" where i would authorize an intital charge of $1 and then capture the full amount later. Would this work and does it work within the Paypal Here POS?

    Any suggestions?

    Advice about inventory

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 11:57 PM PST

    Hello,

I have a set of sculptures I want to sell. I currently have 1 original of each of the 5 different sculpture designs I wish to sell. These are 3D printed on my own machine (formlabs form 2) and weren't super cheap to create. The numbers just wouldnt work to sell them this way.

The good news is I have a few places that can mass produce them for me at a low cost for each one... the problem is I need to buy a batch of at least 250... which is a ton of cash.

So my question is just how to get this off the ground. If I start marketing and sell any, I will have a delivery gap of quite a long time before I wait to see if a bunch of orders come in to verify its worth ordering 250 of them, not to mention it will take a month or 2 to get my items from the producer.

Or, If I go ahead and pick one of the designs and purchase 250 of them... maybe no one will want them or I only sell a few and im stuck with a product no one wants.

Anyhow, I feel like I am between a rock and a hard place and cant seem to find a plan.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Accounting for client applied charges

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:54 PM PST

Bit of an odd question, but I'm a bit at odds over how to enter this into our accounting software. Looking for a bit of advice.

We have a client who, for example, pays $1000 for a service. They then deduct a fee for another service we pay them for, say $100. So the check ends up for $900.

Would it be better to record this as a payment of $1000 and a bill payment of $100 (and deal with assorted odd looking ledger entries) so we have a more accurate representation of gross income, or simply as a $900 payment?

They also base their 1099 off the final amount, $900 in this example.

    Finally out of the red!!

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 10:13 AM PST

Hope I'm not celebrating too soon, but my business is finally starting to make a little bit of money! After a failure when I got screwed out of my first venture by a shitty business partner, I rebounded immediately restarted, and kept at it and didnt give up. I have been working part time to have a little pocket money as well as pay for overhead for almost 2 years, and now I can finally feel a little relief from having to bear the burden of making ends meet on my own. I'm hoping that this year I will be able to put some money on my pocket after I reinvest more into expanding my company. I am blessed, happy and excited for this new year!

At what point do I actually start registering my business?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:32 PM PST

So I and a buddy just went in half half in buying liquidated pallets. We expect this 1.8K investment to reach almost 13K.

As of now, we are doing this completely off of my eBay account, Amazon, etc.

The location to store these is a place my dad provided for us.

I am in Michigan, and I here taxes are high for small business. All I am is purchasing stuff online, and selling it on eBay. At what point of profit, would you believe, it would be problematic not to report any of this income?

when is it appropriate to have similar names to an established trademark? I want to enter a field with a jokey name that is similar to one of the major players, but the logo, typeface, colors, everything, will be completely different. Is that kosher or no?

All I require is a case study and testimonial. There's no obligation to work with me after this.

Looking forward to reading from you.

    PM me if interested.

    Small Business Primer, Resources

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:24 PM PST

With some hard work and a little luck, I'll be leaving the grind and launching a small business in about 6 weeks. I operated a business before (new home construction) but it's been a while, so I need to start from scratch basically. I'm looking for resources on general small business administration; some of the issues I'd like to learn more about are:

    • Basics of business ownership versus personal ownership of assets (vehicles, tools, etc)
    • Basics of setting up a payroll system
    • Basics of taxes, how to prepare for and pay tax obligations, etc.

Are there resources that might point me in the right direction? I learn a lot by reading, and I'm a pretty quick learner.

    Thanks in advance!

Co-founding a business - how to share profits and raise the money?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:16 PM PST

Together with two friends, I'm planning on opening a gym that would fill a market gap in my city. One of them will be the main trainer, the other a secondary trainer and do any number of other tasks, and I'll be the manager (as a side job).

This is only a preliminary arrangement and there a many small kinks that have to be corrected if I'm to agree to cofounding this business.

The main thing to settle for now is how to raise the money and divide both social capital and profits.

I have enough saved up to pay for my share (we don't need much, something like $10,000), but they don't. Should they look for loans independently as natural persons or should the company as a legal person do it?

Secondly, how should profits be shared? The trainer will be the most important person in the business, so it wouldn't be fair for her to receive just 1/3 of the profits. What solutions do you propose? Giving her a wage?

    Thanks

How can i start a small business and hire myself and rent me out? (Uk)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:13 PM PST

I work as a developer in a quite rare programming language. I'm a contractor at the moment in a large investment bank. Which means my company makes 9k per month and I only get 3k. I would like to start a small business and hire myself as a contractor but not sure how I should go about it. Any suggestions?

TL;Dr: how can I be my own employee and find myself contract work?

    Question about taxes

Quick question: If I run a small agency that has an LLC, do I fill out a 1099 for clients as the business or personally? I assume it's as a business but wanted to make sure.

Trying to find a lot of new smartphones for wholesale price

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 12:48 PM PST

I'm starting an online smartphone company, so I need to find a way to find a good supplier for modern smartphones, but for a cheap price. I'd ideally like to not spend $800+ for each individual phone, so I wasn't sure if there are any good wholesalers out there that sell any brand new modern smartphones. Modern meaning newest models and whatnot.

    I'm having overbearing stress

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 05:11 AM PST

For the past 3 months or so I've been getting quite stressed with work, which has been increasingly been becoming more intense to the point now where I feel a pain in my chest and sometimes difficulty breathing.

There's no specific thing which is causing my stress and I have been trying to understand what's causing it and how to make it stop. So far i've found that the only thing which will make me feel better is going to sleep.

It's getting to the point where this feeling is unbearable and I am questioning what I really want to do. Can anyone relate? Can anyone help me combat this feeling?

FWIW, i've visited a doctor who's assured me that I have no medical condition and my pain and breathing problems are stress related.

waitlist app for restaurants and bars

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 12:15 PM PST

For busy restaurants, is it useful to have an app to let customers reserve a table and text them when it is ready? I am thinking about developing one for my family members, but not sure if I can generalize it and sell it to other restaurant owners.
