Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:04 AM PST If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:00 AM PST I am new enough to investing but months back I saw FB price and thought it will surely go up as it's so rich and can buy any competitor etc. Now it's jumped 15% and about 20% off ATH and i'm feeling a fear of FOMO. I feel the same about BABA which has grown nearly 30% this month. Do you think it's unwise getting in on these? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:01 AM PST I bought this book by mistake: Intermarket Technical Analysis: Trading Strategies for the Global Stock, Bond, Commodity, and Currency Markets (Wiley Finance) https://www.amazon.com/Intermarket-Technical-Analysis-Strategies-Commodity/dp/0471524336 But head that more popular book by John J Murphy is this: Trading with Intermarket Analysis: A Visual Approach to Beating the Financial Markets Using Exchange-Traded Funds 1st Edition Are they a lot different and you think it's worth buying the 2nd one? Looking for more investing/economics podcasts Posted: 31 Jan 2019 03:54 AM PST Currently I listen to the Motel fool podcasts, FT alphachat, exchanges at Goldman Sachs, the indicator and planet money. Posted: 31 Jan 2019 02:28 AM PST So I'm new to the arena of options, what I seem to come across is a pattern in which it seems only option sellers make money. I came across a few posts where buyers made significant gains but lost it all due to poor risk management.. But for the most part option buyers seem to fall short. Has anyone here made significant returns buying options and hasn't lost it all? I was thinking of strangling otm options and 30 days till expiry selling, hopefully making returns from the deltas(Instead of hoping it hits strike price), and hoping some gambler buys the crappy option, but can't find almost anyone using such a strategy. I'm only 20, so I don't have much savings, just playing around with 100$ in robinhood. So my lack of capital prevents me from writing options.. Is it a waste of time to try to flip option contracts like this? [link] [comments] |

Clarification on stocks and trading Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:23 PM PST What is the point of buying a stock of a company that doesn't pay a dividend? Is it just to wait until the stock is worth more and then sell it? Also, is options trading just betting whether the price will go up or down in the future? That's what I keep coming to as I read about it. [link] [comments] |
Newbie question about startups which are fundraising: How to find them? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:01 AM PST Hi All, I'm an newbie investor who would like to invest in startups. There are some startups which I am already a customer and they are going to fundraising campaigns to raise funds from everyone. I currently know just 3 of them and I bet there are thousands of them which is possibly have a better chance on returns. Do you know any place that list startups who are searching for fundraising? So I can see the options around and give a better decision. [link] [comments] |

How to compare valuation of international stocks vs. S&P? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:49 PM PST As it's Moronic Monday (Wednesday edition), here's a pretty basic question. I want to find a relatively simple way of comparing valuations of domestic vs. international stocks. The only real benchmark I've found so far for international stocks as an asset class is the MSCI EAFE index. One idea would be to compare this to the S&P index to see relative price movement of both indexes, but this doesn't seem to be particularly meaningful. Ideally, someone would create a similar index to the Shiller Cyclically Adjusted PE Ratio, which provides an average PE of stocks in the S&P, but if this exists for international stocks, I haven't found it. (Of course I realize that "international stocks" is a very broad category and that one market in this class can be overvalued while another is undervalued.) How do you guys approach this? Opening a first position in BRK.B Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:37 PM PST I am interested to open a first position in BRK.B (~5k) but having a hard time understanding how to value this stock, especially how to account for the private equity holdings. What I know so far is the BV at which Buffett repurchased the stock last year, which I am using as an indicative of intrinsic value. Is that a fool's errand? If not what I can see is that the stock price isn't far from it but trading at ~ 1.3 BV. What I am unsure is whether those 100B+ of cash Buffett is currently holding isn't in a way making the BV a useless metric right now to value Berkshire. Any thoughts? or resources that could help share some lights on how valuation should be approached for a company like Berkshire? If you opened a position in Berkshire, do you mind sharing what entry price and how did you use the BV to size your entry? Thanks folks! [link] [comments] |
