Update on insurance company telling my doctor I was covered for something when I wasn't.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:55 AM PST

A year ago I asked for advice regarding the insurance company who said I was covered for treatment I was seeking, when I was not.

It took almost a year but they finally admitted they reviewed the tape where they stated I was covered, and my doctor's office and blood lab were both finally paid! They also sent me a check to cover some of the meds I had purchased out of pocket.

The OHA in Hartford kept at them and I'm really so pleased their office really did such a fantastic job.

At the time I didn't want to jinx, but I now have a beautiful 8 month old son. The treatment was fertility and it worked! Yay for uncovered covered fertility treatment LOL.

Thank you to everyone who suggested I contact OHA and AG. I'm so thankful for the suggestions.

Going on long trip in two weeks, an 18 hour drive one way. Girlfriend wants to drive some of it, shes not on my insurance, but has her own policy. What is at risk if something happens while she is driving?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 03:41 AM PST

Basically what the titles says. She refuses to let me make the drive alone and is very against stopping for a night at a hotel. (Says it's not in the budget) I don't mind the break from the road, I've never been able to sleep in a car and it just doesn't make much sense to me to rush the drive and do it in one day, anyway. I'm afraid that her not being a driver on my insurance would bite my ass if something did happen while she was driving.

I'm making payments on this car, will be for a few more years. I can't afford to pay for a car I can't drive and I've heard/read far too many stories of this happening to people.

So what's the right way to approach this? AITA for not wanting her to drive my car when she isn't on my policy?

I'll happily clarify any details if needed.

Edit: We're on the east coast US and traveling across country, if that makes a difference.

Insurance refusing to pay because I didn’t do a pre authorization Long story short I had rotator cuff surgery and insurance is now refusing to pay because a pre authorization was required.

Long story short I had rotator cuff surgery and insurance is now refusing to pay because a pre authorization was required. Are they still legally obligated to pay or am I on the hook for this 60k + dollar bill? I was under the impression that hospitals will check and run a pre authorization if it is required. Do I just need to put up a fight or am I wasting time? Thanks for any advice. Edit meritain , US, rotator cuff surgery

How long from appraisal do you have to take car into a shop?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 06:59 PM PST

Someone hit my bumper and I just got the appraisal. Problem is, I got into a bigger accident and now my car is not driveable.

Somewhat relevant information regarding how long I have: My insurance company said they're hoping to call me back by friday when they talk to the other guy. The adjuster for the insurance company for the guy I hit also isn't answering his phone anymore.

Car accident driving girlfriend’s car while she was not in it

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 08:09 PM PST

Car accident occurred in Pennsylvania, I was driving my girlfriend's car (she was at work and not in the vehicle). I was stopped first at an intersection, opposing car stopped subsequently, and I proceeded with my right of way going straight after stopping and ensuring he was not going. As I was about to pass his car and clear the intersection, he then started turning left, and struck the car I was driving on the front driver side with damages. I took his insurance information, and driver's license, and he rushed off afterwards. I called the police to try to file a report, and they said if there is no serious injury, than a report is not needed. I had a conversation with the other driver over text, and I have records of our conversation where I said "do we agree that I was going straight, and you crashed into me turning left", and he answered "yes, I am at fault". I then asked "do we agree that I stopped first at the intersection, and I had right of way", and he answered "yes". I have kept records of these texts. We did not have any obvious witnesses, although a tow truck that heard, but did not see the accident, and saw our interaction between the two parties. Claim was filed with insurance of the owner of the car.

    1. What is the coverage situation for being involved in a collision where you lent your car to another driver?
    2. How should we talk with the adjuster, and what do we to support our case that the other party was at fault?
    3. I understand Pennsylvania is a "no fault" state, where you choose full or limited tort, but i understand that is with respect to personal injury, and not relevant to coverage for damages to the car?
    4. Anything else we should do/know?

How can I confirm that my renter's policy covers relocation?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 07:20 PM PST

I'm crap at reading legal documents. Wondering what I should be looking for to know that my renter's insurance policy through Progressive covers temporary relocation?

[NY] Driving Record and Out Of State Violations

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 07:15 PM PST

While shopping for car insurance, they ask a question about moving violations.

It is my understanding that while several started share records with each other, not all DMVs do anything with them. While a license suspension is reciprocal, a moving violation (the record and points associated) are not necessarily recorded in your home state.

Particularly in NY, per the DMV site, they won't place any out of state violation on your record unless from Quebec or Ontario.

I have a friend who thinks they had a ticket a while back in Maine (probably less than 3 years ago, maybe even less than 2 years ago). And pulled their DMV record and it was all clear. Based on that, he decided to fill the application and declare no moving violations.

Is there any way this information shows anywhere? My take is that he is clear, no way for insurance to check every state record. I assume they base it only on your home state record. And the CLUE report is only about claims and accidents but no driving record info.

Is that true? It sort of gives NY drivers a break if so. Which is weird as I find NY to be particularly tough in regards to driving penalties.

    MetLife dropped me

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 04:24 PM PST

I had a spotless record for many years but unfortunately I've had three claims in 2 years ( no fault of my own ) acts of god. I received notice 2 weeks ago I am being dropped due to too many claims filed. I filed an appeal which was denied. This is all new to me and I am in search of a new homeowners insurance Policy. I am very worried based on what I am reading on the internet that I am going to have trouble obtaining new home owners insurance. Does anyone have any specific companies that work with people in my situation or really any advice you could provide would be appreciated. Thank you

[NC Auto] Sideswiped in the turning lane, word vs word

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 06:13 PM PST

I had just turned into a median/turning lane on a 4-lane rd (2 x 2 lanes) and had stopped to wait for traffic on my right to clear so that I could merge safely into the normal traffic lane. Oncoming traffic on my side was completely clear when I entered the turn lane because of a recent light change.

The other driver was heading behind me and merged into the turn lane/median too early trying to turn left, striking my front passenger side and continuing for another two car lengths before stopping. They are claiming that *I* struck *their* vehicle and citing heavy traffic.

I'm concerned because my vehicle is less insured but more fragile than the other driver's due to mileage and age. I own it outright but it is in the maintenance phase of life. I don't care much about cosmetic damage, but I fear that the collision may have caused more serious problems for my vehicle.

Police report is still pending, but with no eyewitness i'm told this is going to be word vs word and they have far more money than I do. What should I do?

I was just told that if I go without car insurance that I won't be able to purchase it in the future....

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 03:47 PM PST

I'm starting college next semester and just sold my car and won't be buying another for at least two years. I won't be driving often and when I do I will be using a car sharing service and rent cars. I thought I would price non owner auto insurance to cover me so I wouldn't have to purchase insurance every time I rent a car (maybe 3-5 times a year). So I call to get a quote and the agent on the phone tells me that if I don't have insurance for a while and then buy another car and need insurance I will be ineligible because of a gap in coverage. Is that right? Or are they trying to scare me into keeping my policy active?

Minor accident in private lot with a friend who admitted fault ... insurance says joint liability

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 05:56 PM PST

Rather frustrated right now. I was in a minor accident in a private lot with a friend I work out with. He admitted fault on the spot and asked that I go get an estimate so he could pay out of pocket. Well the 2 estimates came back at 2500 so he filed a claim with his insurance. His insurance called to do an investigation and has came back that their driver was only 60% at fault. After talking with the other driver he said that at first the adjuster came back with 50/50. He said there was absolutely nothing I could have done to prevent the accident and the adjuster went to 60/40 and said the best they could offer was 70/30. I called the adjuster to see how I could at least get the 70/30 and she just responded that the offer was 60/40 and that she didn't need to discuss the conversation she had with her member. I've asked to speak to her supervisor and am waiting to do so. What are my next steps? Does it matter that the other driver admitted guilt? No police report was filed. I am in Illinois.

To explain the accident ... I was completely backed out of my spot, stopped, and just put car in drive. The other driver backed into by driver door with their driver side rear bumper.

Hypothetical: I have my states minimum Coverage requirements (25k/50k). Would I be liable for anything over $50k if I, for instance, cause a 4 car accident with serious injuries?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 05:52 PM PST

Sorry if this is a relatively straightforward question.

My mom was just in an accident and it got me thinking about this. I feel like I drive carefully enough where the only at-fault accident I could cause would be just a fender bender.

    Auto insurance, VIN and discounts.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 05:20 PM PST

I'm at a lost right now. Since I first called my insurance company 'til right now I've had Erie insurance. Now call me an airhead but I've never checked my VIN to see if it was right on the insurance after the first call.

Well it came time to switch because I was tired of paying $133 a month and I applied for Safe Auto.

Got a great quote on Safe Auto and all is fine and they gave me a discount for having insurance and not letting it lapse more than 6 month! Sweet! I'm literally almost paying half of what I was before!!

Well now when entering my info on Safe Auto I realized it didnt match the form I just sent them from my proof of insurance with erie! It's not completely different, it's just a mistype it looks like (two characters are wrong).

Will this void my discount with safe auto?? I need insurance by tomorrow and I got approved but I'm worried about this discount because they had me send the proof of old insurance after the fact of already quoting me with a discount, and the proof is a different vin slightly than the vin they're insuring.

    So mad :(

question for adjusters in WA state about diminished value?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 04:19 PM PST

I am an agent in WA state, I have a client who has a 2014 Dodge ram 2500 that was hit while parked by an uninsured driver. It bent the frame, nearly totaled it, however safeco opted to repair it, 17k.

They are telling my client that WA state does not offer diminished value, can any Safeco adjusters weigh in on this?

When we filed the claim the adjuster told him he could not have a rental car because he did not have rental on his policy, however in WA state UMPD affords that coverage and I mentioned that to her and she had to go look and stated that she was wrong and would offer the insured a rental car, so she was wrong in that instance, could she be incorrect in this one?

Is there a different way that I need to approach this for our customer, because it feels as though he is not really being made whole here, on 12/10 his vehicle was worth lets say 40k and then on 12/20 its worth significantly less due to being in an accident albeit repaired, its just not worth the same.

Please let me know if I am missing something as an agent, it just feels wrong though.

Who is at fault in my auto accident and does the physical damage support me?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 04:18 PM PST

I was coming to a four way stop and made a complete stop. There was a car stopped in front of me and to the right of me. No one had turn signals on and everyone intends to go straight. The car in front of me goes and I begin to as well. The car to the right of me is completely stopped at the time and showed no signs of moving foward. When I'm in the middle of the intersection, the nose of my car is nearly through the intersection, the car to the right of me begins moving foward and accelerates. I honk at it and it shows no sign of stopping and hits my passenger side directly over my tire.

We filed the police report and everything but I want to know who is at fault. I cam to a complete stop and went with the other car going the opposite way on the same road. I was over halfway through the intersection when she started accelerating and she hit the very back tire of my car w her front. My car had to be towed and the wheel locked up while she drove away with minimal damage to the grill.

Since her cars front hit my back does the physical evidence prove that she's at fault?

I pay for my Mom's car insurance, asking a hypothetical:

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 03:53 PM PST

We live in California, and hold 25/50/25 auto insurance coverage for both us. I'm looking to cut costs, so I'm thinking about lowering her coverage to the state minimum 15/30. My mom literally has zero assets and lives off of social security. I don't have a close relationship with her (long story), but I've paid her insurance for as long as I can remember to help out a bit.

Since she has no assets, does moving to 15/30 make sense? Could I be held liable since I pay the policy on her behalf?

Why do auto insurance companies ask who is living with you?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 06:38 PM PST

Hey. I've shopped around for auto insurance a couple times and I can't wrap my head around why it matters.

I asked an agent today and they told me it was to legally exclude them. This doesn't make sense to me since if I'm only insuring myself then it automatically excludes everyone that isn't me. Why should I have to give them information on who is living with me? Honestly I would be more likely to let a good friend who doesn't live with me drive my car so this makes no sense to me personally.

    USAA vs Geico

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 01:44 PM PST

I've had USAA for the past three or so years now and my insurance keeps going up every renewal. I turned 25 earlier this year and thought it would go down. I just got the renewal notice and it's going up again by almost $200 for the 6 month premium. From $1166 to $1341. I got a quote from Geico and it's quoting me $1073 for what seems like the same coverage. I like USAA and they had the lowest rates for me when I first had to get my own but it just keeps going up. Is Geico a good alternative? Can I go back to USAA later on?

    Car Insurance for teen

I had stop sign. They did not. I turned left. They hit my rear. Please advise.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 12:44 PM PST

I was at a stop sign waiting for 2 minutes until it was clear. I turned left. The velocity of that car going straight was way too fast for the street. If they were going the speed limit I believe they wouldn't have hit me. They smashed hard into my trunk past my rear tire going over well 50 mph and they didn't brake or make any attempts to stop or slow down, they hit me full speed.

I'm not stupid I understand turning left must yield but I would like your opinion on how this will be perceived, best case scenario, and what I can advise to the insurance adjuster to explain my case.

I did not get a ticket. I was too flustered to listen to cop speaking to other driver but I don't think they got a ticket either. It was a young woman. We exchanged insurance with the officer. Thanks.

Can I file a car insurance claim for damage from 2 years ago?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 09:01 AM PST

Two years ago, my car was parked in the garage of my old apartment (that I own) over winter. My tenants at the time asked to use the car a couple of times, and I agreed, as I lived out of town and had given them the keys to start the car occasionally over winter (upper Midwest).

When I picked up the car in the Spring, it had a few dents along the front edge; not the bumper, but the side of the car in the front.

It didn't occur to me until THIS MONTH that I should have maybe filed an insurance claim. Oye. Is it too late? Is there any point?

The tenants didn't disclose causing the damage, but it would had to have happened either in the garage itself, or when they drove the car. I wasn't mad at them - I once borrowed a car and caused a similar dent in my friends car (about which I am STILL horrified, a decade later). I am still in touch with the tenants, who have moved away.

I have Geico, and had the same insurance plan and carrier back then too.

If I did file, what would they say about the date and how long ago?

And for what it's worth, I have a $250 deductible, and have never filed a claim before.

Chicago - Upstairs Condo's Insurance Wants To Only Pay Our Deductible For Two Separate Water Damages - Need Advice

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:58 AM PST

I am located in Chicago, Illinois. I have owned my condo unit for a little over one year and my upstairs neighbors have now water damaged my property three times. Once was recently after purchasing the property and all of the repairs and mitigation went through their insurance upstairs. Within the last month, they have now water damaged my unit two additional times: once by a bathroom sink that leaked through the ceiling and into my unit and once by a toilet seal that caused sewer water to leak through the ceiling and into my unit. We have been discussing with the upstairs unit owners insurance about both (which they mentioned would be handled separately) and today they came back and told us that they would claim liability but would only pay us our deductible for putting it through our insurance, due to the condo association laws. We stated that state laws trump the condo association laws in this matter, as that is how they are written, and in the end the supervisor said that we are right but that they would not be changing their stance and will email us a written notice.

Can anyone offer advice on what to do next in this situation? I do not feel that putting these claims through our insurance will do anything but hurt us financially in the end through rate increases, they are not big enough claims for me to feel comfortable doing that but there is damage and I am not interested in being taken advantage of by this insurance company. We are currently thinking of bringing the issue up to the Illinois Department of Insurance through the complaint process but I am looking for additional advice. This is our first condo and having water damage three times in the last year has been heartbreaking and infuriating to say the least, we just don't want to be taken advantage of because we don't know any better.
