Unsexy Businesses - Franchises, Nightclubs, Car Washes, Construction Posted: 29 Dec 2018 09:16 AM PST Bored of all the stories about apps and selling t-shirts for a quick buck... where are all the stories from the traditional unsexy business owners? point me in the right direction if possible. Maybe they don't consider themselves as entrepeneurs. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2018 02:50 AM PST I use Inbox to organise my life. The 'reminder' function allows me to use my email inbox as a to-do list without having to have a separate app or list to look at. At the moment I'm thinking that I'm going to have to go back to emailing myself in gmail like some sort of caveman. I've been browsing the play store for alternative email apps but none of them appear to have such a clean and simple reminder function. It's difficult to tell without installing every single one and trying it though. I just want to add a note into my inbox in line with my emails, and to be able to snooze emails and reminders to come back into my inbox at a time of my choosing. Any recommendations please?! Question for people who used to NOT believe in their ability to succeed, but are now succeeding Posted: 29 Dec 2018 10:32 AM PST Were you unaware of how much you DIDN'T believe in your abilities before you got started on this journey? Is it possible to be numb to how much MORE you should be believing in possibilities? Is belief just a bunch of horse shit? Can "not believing in yourself" really sabotage your ability to put effort into something? Can it lead to energy and focus problems? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2018 01:39 PM PST Hello businessfolks. I am a full time dad and financial advisor; an independent broker of life insurance and investments, salesman, business owner, administrator and secretary. I work one day a week and am otherwise at home with my kids. They're all very young, and we never could afford daycare up front. The business is a sole-proprietorship, I am the only worker. Over the last three years I have averaged an income of about $20k/yr. It's small fries compared to the success stories shared here. This year my income is much lower but that is because of the transition from a captive agent (with a firm) to independence. More on that in the details. When I pair my income with the savings I have in not paying for daycare, I put my annual "income" around $32k. My target clientele are old-millenial (aged 28 to 35) Canadians: we have finished school, we have paid off our student debts, we have disposable income, many of us have young children, and we are for the first time buying houses and thinking about far-away retirement planning. These clients are working hard, and generally can only meet in the evening or weekends. I'll agree to meet anytime a client is willing to, and have started meetings as late as 1am. Otherwise, for working with branch officers, continuing education/training, office hours work, I have one day a week where the wife stays home with the kids and I get going. My income is entirely commission based. I am paid by an insurance carrier to broker the sale, and make money when a client purchases a policy. I have many clients who have never bought anything, and that's ok, because sales isn't my job. My job is giving advice. Right now I am just working on my process, from gathering information to making a plan to closing the sale, as my two youngest kids will start school next September. When all of my kids are in school, I anticipate working full time and want to get to it with an as-efficient-as-possible process. If anyone out there is reading and has knowledge in using CRMs, I'd appreciate a conversation with you! Entrance into this industry can be costly. I started with a captive firm who paid for my licensing, training, exams, and even paid an allowance while the sales commissions income ramped up. Specifically, I am licensed by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario for life insurance; and by the Mutual Funds Dealer Association for mutual funds. Both licences are thoroughly and regularly audited, so there's no funny business. I estimate that my previous employer may have spent upwards of $40k to get me qualified and up and running. I'm at my inlaws for supper for the next few hours, so ask me anything and I'll do my best to answer. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2018 07:49 AM PST First post here. I've been working on a prototype for a social coaching service for about five months now. In addition to humanistic values, I'd like the service to be evidence-based and scientifically motivated. I finally started to reach out to the scientific community, starting with social psychologists, requesting a brief call to discuss and get their feedback. So far I've received two responses, both hard "no's." One was "I'm retired and don't do this anymore," and the other, "I don't have time." I told myself this could easily happen, especially given that the messages are going out cold. I'm usually a fairly resilient person, but if I'm being honest, it feels super discouraging. Posted: 29 Dec 2018 08:50 AM PST Really struggling right now. Feel very overwhelmed. Anxious. Ringing in my head. Way too much to do. Can't relax. Dealing with some health problems. Feels like what's the point of all this right now. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2018 01:42 PM PST I am asking this out of curiosity, and also for networking. I am just curious how many people who are in this community are aspiring to start a business in the cannabis, or hemp industry? Or maybe you have already started a business in the industry. Now this does not have to be a business that sells cannabis or concentrates or even grows, I am more interested in those who are starting our want to start ancillary businesses within the industry. Is My Packaging Is Market Ready Visually? Posted: 29 Dec 2018 07:07 AM PST So here is one of my bags. They all look pretty much like this with different label base colors to match the roast of the beans and obviously different wordage. The packaging is going to be for online sales only so not really needed for a store shelf appeal quite yet. https://i.ibb.co/jvsZKLQ/IMG-2379.jpg Edit: Just noticed the massive typo in the title. Whoops lol [link] [comments] |

Benefits of offering employee discounts? Posted: 29 Dec 2018 01:34 PM PST I am new to business, and quickly learning. But anyway, one thing I always hear about is companies offering employee discounts. But my question is, from the business's point of view, what are the benefits of offering employees discounts? Posted: 28 Dec 2018 09:46 PM PST Had a thought... What to do in the first year of online business Posted: 29 Dec 2018 01:24 PM PST Hey guys, Im in the first year of my online business and I have no idea what to do. Im selling socks online and I only have 4 designs to sell with 9 different colors. I know I can bring traffic to my website to get more sales however having only 4 designs I believe that my conversion rate will be low because people will not have much socks to choose from. Im confused on what to do during the first year of my business. Im getting good sales whenever I spend on ads however I still lose money because I believe my conversion rate is not that good yet and people dont have much socks to choose from. What are the best things to do in the first year of online business? [link] [comments] |

Question about business line of credit Posted: 29 Dec 2018 12:28 PM PST Hi all! I am rounding out my first year of entrepreneurship and to help me make the initial leap from a full time gig to self employment I did take on some contract work for cushion in the first year. However, I'm realizing that because I can't dedicate 100% of my time to growing my business because of the consulting work, I am looking to make another leap. I'm thinking of taking out a business line of credit to cover my business expenses and salary for 1 year so I can really hit the ground running and grow the business to be self sustaining (and quit the consulting work). My question is, if, in theory (based on calculations of what I made this year multiplied by the added amount of time I'd be dedicating to growing the business), I can potentially make enough over 1 year to pay back any expenses incurred on the credit card plus a (very) small extra- would you consider this a good idea? I'm reaching for a line of credit vs a loan because I don't seem to qualify for many loans (despite my good credit score) and if I do, it's not in the amount I need or an astronomically high interest rate. Also, I won't need to start paying the line of credit back in such large amounts immediately. Plus, if, in theory I'll be making more money, I may not need the entire line of credit. I have little savings and an excellent personal credit score. This idea scares me and I understand it's risky but something in my gut won't let me forget the idea so I was hoping this community might lend me some insight. Thanks 😊 [link] [comments] |
The Start and Stop Pattern of An Entrepreneur -- How Do I Fix This? Posted: 29 Dec 2018 12:12 PM PST So, i've built a lot of websites over the years, and I seemingly have a very frustrating pattern that I can't seem to break. I get so excited about the launch of a new venture and put in about a good three to five months of everything I have and then hit a brick wall. Usually the case is a lack of any monetary success. In the instances that I've made some $$, i usually kept at it a lot longer. My latest case in point is AllVintageCards.com, a site I built earlier this year after re-discovering my childhood passion of collecting baseball cards. My design was to become an authority in more vintage oriented cards with really long form, high quality articles. The efforts have paid off (sort of) from an SEO perspective as the site has a lot of solid rankings within that 11-20 spot in Google, but the search traffic is really light (lucky to get about 8-10 hits a day). At this point, I'm not even sure what I could monetize as the search is too low, and it's really hard to sell anything as most transactions are happening on ebay. A similar pattern emerged just recently with a deals based website I built up and custom designed, but ended up with little success after about six months. I did end up selling the site for a few bucks so not all was lost, but again, another start and stop. I work full time so it's tough to devote even more time to these projects, but I have enough time where I really want to build something that provides some part time passive income. Anways, just venting a little bit and throwing myself out there to see if anyone experiences similar obstacles..and any advice as to how you might get over them. I'm even already thinking of something else I want to start! I know i should probably stick to the vintage card site, but the lack of ideas regarding monetization has me frustrated. Is it worth moving my LLC from Oregon to Washington? What does the process look like? Posted: 29 Dec 2018 11:58 AM PST I have an LLC in Oregon, but am looking to move myself and my company (digital marketing) to Washington to avoid Income tax. I am planning on moving to Vancouver WA, which is a 5 minute drive to Oregon so I can take advantage of no sales tax in Oregon. Has anyone made a similar move? What is the process of moving my single member LLC from Oregon to Washington? [link] [comments] |
I was sent a W9 form? What does that mean? Should I fill it out? Posted: 29 Dec 2018 11:52 AM PST Hi all, I run a web development agency and one of my clients' accountants sent me a W9 form. I'm going to be honest I know almost nothing about this stuff, but when I told a friend they were surprised, like this is something only employees fill out. Is this true? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2018 07:51 AM PST Hey guys, I saw a comment in another thread discussing a potential business which includes setting up Smart devices in peoples homes (Alexa, Google Home, Philip's lights etc). This has peaked my interest and I'm just interested in getting a few opinions on this and maybe even a few words of advice. My own thoughts are this business obviously doesn't have much in terms of repeat customers, but maybe I could offer a monthly subscription, after the initial start up costs, which includes unlimited call outs for all those small issues which may arrive after setting everything up. In terms of marketing, I would probably post on local fb groups etc and see if it catches any attention and see how I go from there. This is my first real "go out there and give something a go" moment in the entrepreneurial space so all advice is very much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2018 11:28 AM PST Thinking of Customer Relations as Binary Would you like in on a secret that we have learned over the years? This is probably the number one biggest piece of advice you could ever hear for building a successful organization. It can not only help you to grow your exponentially, but also give you a much better experience while running it! Ready for it??? Keep your existing donors and backers happy! Ok well that sounds less revolutionary when it's spelled out. Even in bold. But it is amazing to me how many non-profits, and especially for-profits get this wrong. Organizations will spend fortunes to acquire new clients, and buy traffic to a website. While at the same they actively try to prevent people from contacting them with issues or concerns. I will never understand this. When someone reaches out to you it is a great opportunity. True, they may have a problem or concern, they may even be angry, this is your time to shine! The Binary choice I believe that every situation has 2 options on how to react. It can either be a very big important reaction, or a calm, no biggy kind of reaction. Here is the catch. You have to pick one. The person on the other side of the table will pick the other. Let me explain with a scenario. Let's say a new donor calls upset about a charge on their card. They are mad, calling you names, accusing you of being a fraud etc. What do you do? 2 choices One you sympathize. Oh my, I am so sorry we must have made a terrible mistake. We will start by contacting the CC processor to insure that this will never happen again. Obviously you will be refunded immediately. Let me just get a supervisor on the line as well to go over this and make sure we take care of this. Can you just give me the details from the charge on your card? Just to be sure on our end does a spouse have access to that card? Now maybe they realize that the error was on them The client will take the no big deal reaction now. They are happy you listened and cared about the concern. This will probably turn into a life long ambassador to your cause. What if you took the no biggy reaction? Told them, ya this happens, we will refund you. Or even worse, they couldn't even find a way to contact you? It only takes a few minutes to care. [link] [comments] |

Legalities of selling fan-art type products like prints or pins? Posted: 29 Dec 2018 11:08 AM PST Does anyone have insight as to the legalities of selling products such as enamel pins or digital prints that are original artwork, but based off of existing IP? The best example I can think of is the artist Mike Mitchell, who has famously does digital paintings of famous characters from things like breaking bas, star wars, the office...etc but I'm also assuming much of that fan art was not officially licensed. Prints of them are also sold. I do plenty of fan art that I would love to turn into something I could try and sell, but I want to make sure that this is even okay. And if it is not okay or legal, then how do artist like Mike Mitchell or Olly Moss do it? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Softbank: Japan’s Awakening Tech Titan of 2020 Posted: 28 Dec 2018 07:09 PM PST Softbank: Japan's Awakening Titan of 2020 Masayoshi Son, the CEO of Softbank, is a lesser known veteran of the dot-com bubble and information technology revolution. In the past 5 years, he has been quietly making deep impacts on today's tech economy. With the vision of a Steve Jobs, the Wealth of a Warren Buffett, and the boldness of a Richard Branson, he is radically pivoting Softbank from a Telecom Conglomerate into the largest Strategic Technology Investment Firm with the likeness of Alphabet Google and Berkshire Hathaway. Softbank's current ventures and investments seem like the A-Z of 21st Century technologies. Masayoshi has made investments in Asian ridesharing and E-Commerce (Alibaba and Didi Chuxing) to futuristic Artificial Intelligence and Clean Energy. With great boldness also comes great financing activities. Showing his impartiality to politics and shortsighted current events, Softbank has garnered Billions of dollars in cash infusions from Saudi Arabian investments and other parties. Softbank's Debt and Management ExperienceSome criticize Softbank's $160 Billion debt, however as a Telecom giant wanting pivoting into an investment firm, a high debt level is appropriate in SoftBank's situation. Keeping track of my customers' inventory, is that a thing? Posted: 29 Dec 2018 10:39 AM PST Hi there ! I am producing coffee and sells it to retail stores in my city. I found out that most of the time those stores do not re-order when they are low in stock because they forget about it. I was thinking to create some kind of "virtual inventory" where I try to estimate the amount of product they still have and then give them a call when I estimate that they are running low. Is it common practice in the business? Is there a name for that and methods that I can use? It might be a bit difficult to estimate the rate of consumption of each product. Thanks [link] [comments] |
How would you prevent a product's price which has no variable sales cost to drop to zero? Posted: 29 Dec 2018 10:28 AM PST Hello there! This sub has been a goldmine of info lately and I thank you all for this. We are setting up a private marketplaces for companies in the same sector in order to sell data. I am wondering if any of you have a solution to the following problem: Imagine you have a product that has a one-time cost to produce but no variable costs wether you sell it 1 or 100 times (softwares, datasets, documentations ...). How do you prevent someone from buying it at your price and selling it back on a market place for a lower price therefore putting you out of business? A behavior would drive the price close to zero if perpetuated for a while as we have seen on several occasion (cf: dream market) I know most softwares have copyrights ... but if you are a data set reseller for example, setting up a contract can be tricky. We are thinking of setting rules based on percentage of similarities, or correlation for numerous dataset but this solution isn't optimum. We are also thinking of fixing a price range for each category to have control over the fall but that is still not optimal. [link] [comments] |
