My son (12) went through TSA with carryon luggage and a backpack with money that is now missing...what do I do?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 07:51 AM PST

Ok so my son left Louisville early this am to fly to Tampa and he had 2 envelopes with money in them in seperate pockets in his carryon luggage bag. When he went through screening he said his luggage was missing and could only find his backpack and shoes for a moment until his luggage finally came out. He stated several other people behind him had already gotten their luggage. So it sounds like TSA placed his bag back through for some reason? He said they did not bring him over to open his bag and being 12 thought nothing of it, really. He went straight from TSA and boarded. His flight landed and I was at the gate waiting for him. When we got to the car he wanted to take the money out and have me put it in the bank for him. Obviously, it was gone. All he had in his luggage was literally only clothes and those 2 envelopes. What can I do really?

edited to add update: The money was his that he got for Christmas. His dad held onto it until they got to TSA and said he watched my son place the envelopes in the bag in different pockets.

He is reasonably responsible with his money as well and had made plans to save it up for some nerf guns and such. I filed a report with TSA as well as contacted the airline and both airports lost and found. So hopefully we will get some answers soon or at least an idea.

It definitely could have been somehow lost between TSA and the final gate but I think we have covered our bases as much as we can right now. Unfortunately, it's one of those sucky life lessons.

Father kicked me out and won't let me grab my things now

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 07:34 AM PST

Hello! First time posting here, so I apologize if I'm not doing something correctly.

So to try and sum up my situation, a few months ago (middle of September) I received a text from my Dad. This text, in much harsher words, told me that I was being kicked out. I live in a state that was affected by hurricane Florence and went out of town to wait out the storm. So, I had a few pairs of clothes, some smaller belongings, etc. Shortly after the hurricane hit, my dad sent me a text saying don't come back.

So, skip forward a few months, I'm actually doing pretty well. I had a friend and girlfriend that helped me out quite a bit. My problem is that I'm actually officially moving in a week. By moving, I mean that I'm actually renting an apartment in my name. However, a lot of my stuff is still at my dad's and I've reached out to ask if we could arrange a time that I would be able to stop by and grab my things. I'm on a tight budget and being able to grab some of the stuff that I have over there would be a huge help to me. Initially, my request was ignored. I've brought it up again, and this time he said that he would grab a few things and leave them outside... There are some sentimental things I have there, boxes of stuff I saved of my mother's after she passed away, books, clothes, etc. I truly don't believe he will actually get everything.

So my question is this: Am I at a significant risk of legal repercussions if I just go over there and get my stuff. I still have a key to the house, the address on my license is the address of the house, I have not received a restraining order or anything like that which would legally stop me from entering the house. However, I know it's not "my" house. So I don't know how much his text saying, "do not come to this house" would actually hold up if I did go in and grab my stuff.

    Thanks in advance.

    btw, I'm in NC.

[EDIT]: Thank you so much for the advice! I'm going to try and talk with my brother to see if we can work out a time that I could stop by to grab my stuff. I'm also going to speak with the police about bringing an escort with me regardless. Hopefully things work out. I'll be sure to update everyone once it's all over with.

Father passed away from surgical complications, left hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt; however, i have received over $400,000 from life insurance policies and then some. Help.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 08:17 AM PST

Sorry for the formatting. Posting from a throwaway account on the app since my friends/family know my everyday account and are unaware of the situation. I mainly need to vent and some advice about steps to take to figure everything out. This post is a mix of r/personalfinance and r/legaladvice i think, so sorry if some of the things I mention don't belong. I will be cross posting it probably. UPDATE: i did cross post it. Sorry if that breaks any rules.

A little background: I'm the only child between my divorced parents. I'm a 21 year old, full time college student living 4 hours from home, who just got engaged to my forever partner. I also work full time as a certified pharmacy technician. My current monthly expenses total to $528-$650 and i typically bring home $1,100 per month. Before my father's passing I had roughly $2,000 saved in an emergency fund. I have $0 worth of debt since I'm lucky enough to be on a full ride to college and I am very frugal. Since his death, i have obtained a lawyer, but not much has been discussed since it is the holiday season.

My father passed away unexpectedly from complications during a routine surgery. He went in for surgery, was put under general anesthesia, and was somehow allowed to drive 2 hours home not even 10 hours after his surgery. Two days later, my father was life flighted back to the hospital where he was put in ICU on life support due to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and septic shock. On my father's death certificate, the causes of death are 1. ARDS, 2. Septic shock, and 3. Unnatural esophageal perforation. Personally, I'm not sure what they mean by "unnatural esophageal perforation," and i haven't had the chance to ask anyone since it's been Christmas time. My fiancé is convinced it means that the surgeon who performed the surgery nicked my dad's esophagus.

He had an advanced directive and a will. I followed the wishes in his AD and took him off the life support machines. My uncle and myself were listed as executors of the will; however, my uncle signed paper work to relinquish his rights as an executor, making me the sole executor of his will, which has made me extremely suspicious of him.

From the short amount of time I've been able to speak with my lawyer, they are unsure that probating the will would go in my favor. See, my dad was filing for bankruptcy since he was in nearly $200,000 worth of debt that he could not pay off. I'm not sure how he was in such a bad shape financially. From what I can tell so far, here's a breakdown of his finances: he owed $9,800 roughly on his home, but he took a $45,000 equity loan out on the house. He has 12 credit cards, all reaching or over their limits. He just purchased a brand new car totaling to $67,900 roughly. I've never known my dad to be someone to live outside of his means since his teachings are the main reason i am very responsible with my money, so I'm not sure what caused this sudden influx of debt. I'm also suspicious that the debt didn't all come from my dad, that perhaps my uncle had something to do with it. I'm also suspicious that my uncle knew of the debt and that's why he relinquished his rights as executor of my dad's will as a way to wash his hands from everything.

I am extremely worried that i will end up responsible for all of my dad's debt, and that my uncle has royally screwed me over.

Right now i am sitting with $411,409.08 in my bank account now that all of my dad's life insurance policies have cleared. What do i do?? Will i have to pay taxes on this money? I am getting married next year, so using a few thousand for the wedding shouldn't be a problem, i think. I'm also interested in purchasing a home with my fiancé. In my area homes averagely sell for ~$200,000. Would purchasing a home be wise, or would putting down a nice amount and financing it be wiser? What are investment options? What should i look for when investing? I'm waiting to spend any of the money until i have time to further speak with my lawyer, but I want to get a head start in researching my options.

I think I've mentioned everything for now. I'm currently fighting an upper respiratory infection, so my head is a little foggy. I'll add edits and updates as i find new things out and the like.

Edit because of that bot: I live in Atlanta, Georgia.

My Daughters Father passed away I want to know what to do with the situation I am in...

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 06:53 AM PST

My daughters father passed away in September 2017. We were never married but we have a 5 year old together. After he passed away his family went psychotic and took everything from our old house and sold everything that was his and kept everything that was MY daughters. His step dad is a registered sex offender for molesting a 13 year old girl and I never was okay with my daughter going over to his moms house. I let them take my daughter one time after he passed away and they completely brain washed my child and said horrible things about myself. And now they demand to see her and they think they have authority over me because they're the aunt and Grandma who were also never there for my daughter when her dad was alive. It gets to the point where they harass me to see her.... Do they have any rights? I'm in Michigan

[WY] Parents whose first child died due to them refusing medical treatment for religious reasons, are now pregnant with another child.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 06:31 AM PST

Their child was very sick about 10 years ago, this was a 100% treatable condition if they had given her proper medical treatment. They refused treatment and the child died. They were living in GA at the time. There was a police investigation at the time of their child's death but (to my knowledge), nothing happened to them.

They now live in WY and I've heard that they are expecting a new child. Is there anything I can do to ensure (or at least somewhat change the odds) that the same thing is not going to happen to the second child?

They have not moderated in their beliefs throughout the years, if anything, they've gone further towards the extremes.

[NC] Landlord went into my house without any communication and turned on all heating elements to max. Damaged clothing in my room in the process

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 12:33 AM PST

Like the title says, my landlord went into my house this week and turned the heat to max in every room.

I received no notifications that they would be going into my house.

Weather here is well above freezing, so this was not an emergency to maintain pipes or anything. Also there was no one home so heat is just wasted electricity. When they went into my bedroom they tracked muddy shoes onto khaki pants I had left on the floor.

This is the third time I've had an issue with them walking into my home with no communication. They had someone come to check fire detectors who came into my locked bedroom while I was asleep (I work nights). They had a chimneysweep just walk directly in without even knocking, and now this.

Our rental contract does specifically state that they are required to give a minimum of24 hour notice before entering the property unless they are invited or it is emergency maintenance.

I dont know how to go about approaching this.

    Anti-Vax mom

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 10:07 AM PST

My mom won't let me get the HPV and flu vaccine because she fears it will trigger the mysterious illness that killed my father. Among other things, it means I can't have safe sex until I'm old enough to make my own choice, and I will more than likely get the flu. What can I do about this? I'm 15 in New York if that helps anything.

Mom pretends to pay for my college, I find out all of the loans are under my name and she has been stealing my money for three years. [NC]

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 11:18 PM PST

This is a post for a friend. We have just today found out that all of her student loans have been under her name, not her parents. They have been claiming to be "paying for her school" for three years. We got into her student account, and she has actually been getting refunds of amounts as high as $3500 every semester. She has never seen this money, and it is all under HER name.

    What's her next steps?

    Thanks in advance.

Looking to protect family friend who confided in us that her husband physically abuses her (CT)

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 09:25 AM PST

Throwaway account because I have no idea which of my family/involved parties are on reddit, etc.

We usually have a large gathering for the holidays, and this year my cousin brought along her sister-in-law, who we'll call Jess. This is the first time any of my family have met her, but Jess was very quiet and sweet during our holiday dinner. Her and my cousin slept overnight in town, as family members usually spend a day or two here with us before driving back to their respective homes. This morning, however, Jess confided in my cousin that her husband has been beating her and she is terrified for her life, and does not want to return. I can only assume she signed up to come to our humdrum family dinner as a last-ditch escape plan.

I have few other details, as my cousin is still with her and they have not rejoined us yet, but our family has absolutely decided to take her in and do everything we can to protect her. The immediate goal is to get her legal protection, the long-term goal is to get her set up safely somewhere in a place where she can start to rebuild her life. The latter is obviously complicated and I don't expect to concoct a plan for that overnight, but, that's the goal. I think she also has a few very personal items she had to leave behind in her home so as to not arouse suspicion, and would like to retrieve them, but I'm not sure that can be done at this point unless someone has ideas to the contrary.

So to actually be successful in helping her my pragmatic questions are as follows:

    - We are all in CT now, but she resides in MA and I assume was married there, so if Jess needs to file a restraining order, contact authorities, file for divorce, which would be the preferred state to do so in?

    - What is the order of operations for getting her protected? Police, lawyer, then what? She is technically safe at the moment so are the police a necessary first step? It should also be mentioned that none of us are well-off to handle this situation from a financial perspective—we're obviously going to do what we can to make it work— but if there any resources or networks available to us that wouldn't put us deep in the hole I'd be grateful to know about them.

    - Am I missing any crucial legal steps here? I have not encountered an issue like this before.

Apologies for grammar, spelling — I'm writing this in a bit of a hurry. Inbox is open if people have useful tips that might require more info, I'll illuminate what I can.

Thanks reddit—long time lurker here and I'd never thought I'd had to post, but I'm really glad y'all are out here.

Intruders at our house won’t leave

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 09:08 AM PST

My dad has a house in San Marcos, CA. He wanted to turn the main house into an Airbnb while renting off the backyard to mobile houses. I'm not sure about the legal aspects of what my dad did with the contract with the individuals with the mobile home renters. The stopped paying rent after the first month (back in June) and we have been attempting to get them to leave since then. They've made threats towards property damage of our house and towards my dad. The police of San Marcos has been called multiple times and they left without doing anything, stating that it is a civil issue. My dad got a lawyer around October and brought this up to the court multiple times, and, to the best of my knowledge have done nothing. These individuals have been using our water and electricity for free and in this entire time has brought more people to freeload off of our land. It is now almost January and there doesn't seem to be any progress. They've begun to threaten the main house stating that they will blow it up. Fortunately we have a long term Airbnb renter that has been at the house for a couple of months now.

My dad doesn't know I'm posting this but as a family we are at a loss. The police and court isn't doing anything and neither is the lawyer that we paid over a $1000 to assist us. What can we do?

Tldr: we have a house in San Marcos CA that has been intruded by individuals that won't pay rent and is threatening the lives of my parents and the property they are on. The police, court, and lawyer aren't doing anything. They have been on our land since June and we have been trying to get them off since July.

Edit: showing everything said in this post to my parents. My mom says that the judge has signed an eviction notice (as said by my dad) but for some reason our lawyer isn't handing it over.

USPS "lost" my package after I took it to local Post Office, says I am "screwed" out of $200. eBay buyer on my back and I no longer have the funds. Do I have any options here? Or am I totally screwed?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 09:15 AM PST

    LOCATION IS CENTRAL TEXAS

    x-post from r/USPS

I'm sorry if this isn't the best sub to post this in. If it doesn't meet the rules I will remove.

So first of all let me preface this with the fact that I worked at this same local Post Office for over a year and resigned due to physical issues this August.

This is what happened: I sold a Samsung Phone on eBay for $202. I paid extra for 202$ of insurance, and I printed the shipping label on 12/16. On 12/17 at around 7PM I drove down to the office and I put my parcel through the parcel drop in the wall. I did this so to confirm that it made it to the PO (like an idiot). Days later and the tracking # still reads "Label created, USPS awaiting package".

I know how busy it gets this time of year so I wait until 12/26 to call and ask. I call corporate they tell me call your local office. I call my local office and talk to the Postmaster. He seemed to hear me out and take all of my info, told me he will look into it and I even described the package, contents, all info i could think of. Then he gets my name and number. Says he'd call back. Obviously that didn't happen. I call again today and talk to my ex supervisor. By now they know that it is me, and she tells me basically since it never hit ANY scans from USPS, that I'm screwed. I ask if there is a way to pull up the camera footage of me dropping it off. Says nope. Keep in mind I was a carrier there and I resigned without notice and I feel that this could be affecting the way they are handling this. I feel really suspicious that they know what happened to it and are dodging me, or that maybe they just don't care.I do not have the funds to refund the seller and I have no idea what to do.

Is there anything I can do? Do I have any protective rights in place in this situation? Can I demand to review CCTV footage? I have to ask as money is very tight this month and now I'm set back.

Thank you to anyone who read this. I appreciate you

Also I'm using a throwaway for personal reasons

tldr; USPS "never received my parcel" despite me taking it to their office. Apparently me paying for full insurance doesn't mean fuck all, and I'm screwed out of $202, a Samsung Phone, and the ability to pay rent.

Landlord rented our house out before our lease was finished, and has already changed our locks so we can't get in. We still have belongings inside.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 10:23 AM PST

We've been renting our first apartment since February of 2016. Since the beginning we have had a difficult time with our landlord. Things that were promised to be fixed during our original viewing before we ever moved in never were, issues that have come up since then such as a leaking roof and a broken back door were reported to him but never fixed. He has also contacted us saying he needs our rent in cash because our check bounced (we never got a reply after we showed him that he had actually deposited that check three days prior), and he also tried to charge us a $550 late fee when our check got lost in the mail even though the lease stated late fees would be 5% of the rent added on or about $48).

On October 31st of this year (2018) we gave our 60 days notice to vacate to our landlord. Our new lease started on Dec. 1st and we told our landlord we could be out by the 15th if he offered prorated rent, but he told us we had to pay for the full month of December since the lease stated 60 days. That was fine with us, so instead of doing our final move out clean before the 15th, we decided to wait til after the stress of Christmas was over to go back and deal with it.

We gave our landlord permission to enter the property on Monday, Dec. 10th to let us know what we would have to do to ensure we got our deposit back. He didn't give us any specifics, but told us we would be sued for any damages and that we needed to leave the premises in the same condition as when we got there (the damages we figured he meant were some holes in the wall from hanging up shelving, and a deep clean of the carpet since we had a dog. Any other damages such as the roof leaking were the landlord's responsibility as stated in the lease, so these things were the only damages we think we'd be on the hook for. And we do have documentation that we reported the issues that were the landlord's responsibility, he just never bothered to send anyone out). We replied that we would take care of the final clean out before the end of the month, and we would need 24 hrs notice each time he wanted to enter the home before our lease was up (which is already stated in our lease, we just wanted to verify that those were still the conditions.)

Today (Saturday, Dec 29th) we drove over ready to finish our clean out, and the locks had been changed. A few minutes later a trailer pulls up, and the new tenants told us they had signed a lease on the 19th (ten days ago), locks had been changed, and we couldn't go into the home anymore. So basically, there are two different leases in affect and we've paid for a house that we can't get into. We still had items in the house to pick up, and I'm not sure if they've been tossed or if they're still in there. We could even see through the window that a couple of our posters were still on the wall.

At this point we're not sure whether to get the police involved or a lawyer. The property looked the same as it did the last time we were there, nothing has been cleaned or fixed for the new tenant. Any advice would be appreciated, and this is in the state of VA.

tl;dr: Landlord rented our house out and changed our locks before our lease was up. He's entered the home without our permission, but we're not sure how many times.

    [UPDATE] MIL’s Retaliatory RO - I won!

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 02:57 PM PST

Update to this post: MIL filed a restraining order with false claims against me after bailing her son out of jail for violation of a restraining order (mandatory after an assault) - what can I do? (Colorado) https://reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/a2het0/mil_filed_a_restraining_order_with_false_claims/

I wasn't financially able to retain a lawyer & spent two weeks subpoenaing witnesses & supporting documents, terrified because they have means that somehow they'd prevail & I'd end up with a permanent restraining order on my record (for people I honestly never ever wanted to see again). So I went in with a large binder full of material & my ex didn't even show up to lie as a witness for his mother (smart move on his part). She came in with nothing & after definitively proving the first 3 claims in the original filing were lies, the judge looked completely fed up.

My favorite part was after they lost, when his father whined "but how do we ensure she doesn't get back together with my son?" (I'm currently in a dv shelter following a lot of messed up abuse he is facing charges for, hiding from my ex.). The judge practically yelled at them "your son is a 30 year old adult man, I don't think either of you have a full grasp of that fact". They don't, one of the things I do feel bad about (on my exes part) is that his mothers narcissistic abuse & enmeshment has been all he's known & I've seen how those psychological bonds are almost impossible to break.

Then his mother said "wait wait, please reconsider" and something along the lines of "I also think she's going to try to poison my food" (meaning me) - and I swear the judge looked like she was going to laugh when she responded that she wasn't indulging any more of this & their request would not be granted. Hearing over, no black marks on my criminal record - I'm so happy I succeeded but my god getting falsely accused of things is scary.

Thanks to the people who responded in r/legaladvice, you guys are super helpful.

    Roommate Has Drugs

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 10:33 AM PST

About two weeks ago I found a small bag of what appears to be (based on my Google image searches) meth with rolled up dollar bills and coins. My roommate has already been acting very strangely so I assumed something was up but figured it could be just work stress. Some strange behaviors include he's in the bathroom for hours at a time, running the water for 6 hours out of 12, stays up all night cleaning, doing laundry, slamming doors, and then there will be days where he does nothing but sleep. He has been late on rent every month, to the point where our last month we received a notice of intended eviction (he ended up paying 9 days past due).

Our lease prohibits illegal drugs, but how do I report this (or get him out) without implicating myself or getting an eviction? I am concerned with what could happen in the future with his use, which appears to be becoming more frequent. My first post so thanks everyone for any advice!

Cop took my phone for 3 days without my consent after car accident.

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 10:10 PM PST

I (24F) was in a fatal car accident (NY). Driver on the other side of the road crossed the double yellow right into my car. He was pronounced dead on the scene. I was trapped in my car with my bones sticking out of my leg and a shattered heel. They had to use the jaws of life to get me out and I was immediately flown by helicopter to the nearest trauma center. While I was trapped in my car (completely conscious) a cop asked me if I wanted him to call someone. I said yes my mom and dad so he took my phone and walked away with it. He never called my mom and dad. My phone was unlocked and everything. My parents didn't find out about my accident until 3 hours later when an officer came to my house. The cop took my phone with him and went through all my messages. I know because I had my read receipts on and my boyfriend said his message was read around 3 am. I know this was a fatal car accident so he was probably looking to see if I was texting while driving. I just thought you needed a warrant of some sort to look through someone's phone. I had some personal photos in there that I wouldn't want him to see. Not to mention the fact that he didn't even call my parents, which really upsets me. I didn't get my phone back for 3 days after my accident. Was this legal?

    Landlord won't return security deposit

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 10:06 AM PST

I moved out of my apartment on November 18th. The lease ended officially on November 30th. The roommate that I was living with stayed in the apartment, and signed a new lease and paid a new security deposit with the tenant that moved in. My landlord first told me that she had 30 days from when the lease ended to return the deposit (which would be December 30th). As of today (Dec 29th), I have not received the deposit despite numerous inquires, so I reached back out with a reminder. She is now saying that because the other roommate stayed, the deposit does not have to be returned until 30 days from ALL occupants moving out. Reddit, is this legal? I know the laws vary by state, and I live in Michigan. Everything I've looked into says 30 days from the termination of the lease. Please note that we signed a joint lease and paid a joint deposit.

Neighbor from hell and I don’t even live there yet

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 11:07 AM PST

Hi all, first time to post here, sorry if I flaired wrong or make any English mistakes- it's not my first language.

So, I bought my apartment in Berlin, first time homeowner. The neighbor from hell lives right above our apartment. She is still renting her apartment. Everybody else, apart from one other renter, has left. Basically, it's very hard in Germany to evict a renter, and so she and the other neighbors remained in the building.

Day one, the man we hired to renovate the apartment called us, she keeps complaining; me and my husband go there, give her expensive chocolates for the noise and a handwritten letter with our phone numbers on it. If there are any problems please call us, basically.

Since then, she's come to bother the man we hired (let's call him A) every day. Some days she even comes by 5 times in two hours.

A called us today (again, 3rd time) because he can't deal with her anymore. She is always drunk, and delusional. For instance, she offered me a beer this morning when I was there to mediate. It was 09:30. Her apartment is littered with beer bottles, wine bottles, and vodka bottles. I told her, again, to leave him alone, he's working. It's his job. She said she thought he was her friend. I told her he isn't. It was a super awkward conversation.

What can I do to prevent this woman from ruining my life in my new apartment? Is there a German version of a restraining order? I'm not German, but have been living here for 7 years now, but know nothing about the home owner laws.

Thank you all, hope you have a 'Guten Rutsch' / good new year

Edit: she goes to our apartment every day. At least 4 times a day. The people working in our apartment do not speak german.

She forgot we gave her chocolates, and our presence reminded her we did, so in a 10 min conversation she asked us 4 times if we gifted her the chocolates.

She told us her husband died, and she 'has no people on this planet'. It's horrible and I feel for lonely people. It's awful. Can't express this enough, I am a social worker and understand thoroughly how horrible her situation is. It's just, when I'm home, I want to be home, and relax. I give everything of myself everyday, and can't do that in my personal time. :-(

Her problem is not the noise, it's that she's lonely and needs human contact. Understandable. But she won't go away when she rings the doorbell and then slams the door, if the man renovating doesn't open. He tried to not open but she just slams the door for 30 minutes so he opens the door.

My brother is in Jail and being denied medical care

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 07:53 AM PST

(KS) My brother is in a county jail, waiting to be transferred to a state prison, on an MJ possession charge. He's guilty of what they've convicted him of and he's blown through three chances at a diversion on the charge. 12 months and its done.

Prior to being picked up for his multiple warrants, he was living on the streets in Denver for several months. I feel this is important because of his currant symptoms.

He tells me he's lost a lot of weight (310 to 165), I think a lot of that weight loss was while he was homeless, but I'm not sure. He also tells me that he has many bouts of vomiting and diarrhea with intense and painful stomach cramping. According to his letter, one night was so bad he was incontinent in the bed and was denied a shower or clean clothing and bedding. He also says they place a monetary charge on his account every time he sees the nurse who only gives him tylenol and that one time he was sick they placed him in solitary with no other treatment.

I told him that the periodic on/off of his symptoms make me think maybe he's got a food allergy and he needs to track what he's being fed to see if there's a pattern. I also told him to get the full name of the nurse and if he still isn't getting medical treatment, I'll call the state nursing board of licensure.

What I don't know, so here's the questions, is to what degree county jails and state prisons are responsible to provide medical care to inmates? IS it legal to tell an inmate in custody that they can see a nurse but it will cost a lot of money that they will be responsible for? (I told my brother let them charge you, what more can they do to you? - But can those charges be held against him when he's served his time?) Is it allowable and acceptable to put an inmate into solitary because he's sick? Is there an authority I can contact with concerns about my brother's treatment while in custody?

Anyway, he's likely to be transferred to Larnered or El Dorado in the New Year, I don't know if that will be better or worse than where he is now, but my only contact with him is in letters. I can't afford the phone call prices they charge.

My brother is a dipshit. But he's a mostly harmless dipshit. No one deserves to suffer like this.

Unable to find record of supposed arrest from when I was 19. I am in the process of applying to master's/professional schools and am unsure of what to do.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 11:36 AM PST

When I was a dumbass 19 year old, myself and some friends got pulled over in Alabama on the way to spring break and arrested for possession of alcohol, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. We were put in a cell, processed individually, and met with a bondsman who got us out on bail. From there we went on to our destination unsure of what to do next.

I ended up getting a letter in the mail with a case number and instructions for a pre-trial diversion program. Basically, I had to send them something like $1400 and take a certain number of hours worth of drug/alcohol related courses and prove I took them. After completing these requirements I never received anything stating that it had been completed, what steps to take next, and how this incident will look on my record.

Since then, I have applied to a volunteer position and job, both working with kids and requiring a background check, and did not have any issues. Now that I have graduated college and am applying to graduate programs, I am unsure of what to put on the application when it asks about criminal history. I have searched public records in Alabama and have not found anything, and have also conducted a self background check online which yielded no results.

Despite this, there is a record of the arrest on the town website. Another question I have is whether or not there is any possibility of having that taken down so it does not come up when my name is searched on Google.

Any insight and help anyone can give me on this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Edit: The arrest was in Alabama but I am not from Alabama.

Wife has been looking up divorce lawyers

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 09:00 AM PST

My wife has been talking about divorce for a few weeks now, and I got on her phone to look something up and seen where she was looking for local lawyers. My question is this, she is disabled, (wheelchair bound since birth) our house is solely in her name. All things in the house aside from a TV, and a bed was bought while being married with her medical trust when we bought the house and I remodeled. If she does go for a divorce, will I be liable to pay alimony? She's still a college student (about to start her master's) and just got her first job, it's a virtual job and pays next to nothing. I work for her father, and I'm 4 hours away from my family so if divorce is real, I'm moving off and not sure what all I should start to prepare for.

[MD] I was contacted by someone claiming to be with the local Sheriff about a warrant for my wife's arrest

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 09:12 AM PST

I was contacted by a man identifying himself as "Deputy Bill Connor" (not his real name) with the local Sheriff's office (he referenced our specific county) about a warrant for my wife's arrest relating to several charges filed against her. The call came from an out of state number that had called me and been ignored in the past few days.

For some background: A shady company has been attempting to extort money from my wife for a debt they do not own, and had called several family members and shared details of the debt and made several threats relating to criminal charges if my wife does not comply. All of which is illegal under both state and federal law. My wife, with her sisters assistance (SIL is a government budget analyst with a lot of useful contacts) had already begun pursuing formal complaints and a possible lawsuit. The number the "Deputy" called from was one of the numbers this shady company was using.

Now, I obtained a call recording app for my phone and decided to call them back to see what they would say and if I could catch them in anything (I intended to notify them they were being recorded, if you're wondering). The man who answered acted nonchalant about the prior call and message left by the so called Deputy, said they had a process server division and when I pressed him why they had called from that number and identified themselves as a Sheriff's deputy he laughed and said it was because they were "law officers". I said no, they identified themselves as a member of a law enforcement agency and that was not what a process server was. I then said "I don't think you understand what the fuck is going on here" to which he replied "I don't think you do, you sound like an idiot". He then laughed and hung up. I resisted the urge to do anything rash, but it bothered me quite a bit.

What can/should I do here? Is it illegal for a process server to call and identify themselves as "Deputy blank with the blank County Sheriff's Office"? I recorded the message left and have it still saved in my voicemail box. I just don't know what to do and would like some advice. We've already checked, and my wife does not have any warrants.

Is using streaming sites like gostream or putlocker illegal in the US?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 04:42 AM PST

Not sure which sub to post this in but this one came to mind.

In my eyes it's a legal grey area since every few months a site would get shut down and a new one would pop up to take its place, but they're never gone for good. I have a possibly false understanding that you really only get into trouble for piracy and downloading, but where does just streaming a show or movie for free fall under?

Haven't filed taxes in 7 years... owe hundreds of thousands...what's next?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 08:15 AM PST

Asking for a friend (for real.) . Let's call him Sam, hasn't filed taxes in 7 years. Sam owes upwards of one million dollars. He doesn't really know where to start, who to hire, where to go. I'm hoping to help get him in the right direction before things devolve any further. Maybe refer him to a tax attorney, but does anyone know the drill in this situation? Do you need an accountant, an attorney, a girlfriend who works for the IRS? Does the possibility exist to reduce the settlement/amount owed? Located in Maryland if that matters. Genuine thanks for any helpful advice, referrals or experience to share.

I received a call from child protective services (OR) yesterday to inform me that my ex’s wife had a cocaine overdose in front on my children.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2018 01:24 PM PST

His wife is ok, above all I wouldn't want anyone to be hurt.

But cps wants to come to my house and interview me and the kids. I'm just looking for any and all advice you might be able to throw my way.

I have sole custody, but we have 50/50 parenting time (alternating weeks)
