Do not use GoDaddy to Register your Domain

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 08:52 AM PST

Other Domain registrars may do this, but it seems to be the most prevalent with GoDaddy, I'll just get right to it. They buy domains you are searching for and then try to re-sell them back to you as a "Premium Domain" for %1000 more or a lot of times even more, I normally see it go to the base "Premium Domain" of $2,500. They offer domains for $1 as a deal a lot of the times to get you searching for a domain on their website, through this I assume they check for trends and buy high trending word uses and popular phrases. This is such a dirty practice for a company who is there to offer an easy solution to purchase a domain for a lot of times peoples first company, website, and hosting plan.

I've been using Google recently (who also offers anonymous registration as part of the cost, GoDaddy up charges for this)

Just lost 20% of our business, and went back 18 months of hard work and sacrifice.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 12:05 AM PST

    Rant

I run a small company, and just over 30 hours ago we lost 20% of our work, and have thrown away 18 months of hard work. So I got up at 5, determined to make a difference, determined to turn us around. Spent the day redeveloping business plans, calling our marketing contractor, and developing points of difference to excellent in the market, big steps, ball rolling, more forward momentum than we have had in months. 30 min after getting home I was anxious, on the verge of tears and lost all faith in myself.

I have been developing this company because we had three large clients that generated about 40% of our sales, and it was a risk I wasn't happy with. We lost one in June, and just lost a second.

We are in a flooded market and have been working hard to do things right, keep our staff safe, happy and well trained, but it doesn't matter when someone who doesn't give a shit will pay under the table at below minimum wage, and doesn't give a shit about trying to keep the staff safe.

My planning has kept us afloat, and I am trying to stay determined. I don't believe in one door closes, another opens, even though it has happened - I believe you have to find a door and smash it to bits. People say doors just open, but no they dont - I have worked hard for them. If I hadn't, the business would have gone under. But that doesn't matter, because we're not increasing.

Tomorrow I am getting up at 5 for a 13 hour shift. I am exhausted, run down, and beaten down. One foot in front of the other.

    End rant

What the hell am I thinking.

Some of these apps are in progress,3 companies are dead. 2 companies making 6 figures a year. And one company sold.

4 statistics that absolutely prove that content marketing creates more leads and sales

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 10:28 AM PST

Hey all. We wrote an article based on a few stats we found in HubSpot's excellent 'Ultimate List of Marketing Statistics for 2018', that proved how effective content marketing is for any business's bottom line. It's a pretty big size - around 1100 words, so thought a link would be better to post, although I'll share the four stats we picked out.

    1. 47% of buyers viewed 3-5 pieces of content before engaging with a sales rep.
    2. Content marketing gets three times more leads than paid search advertising.
    3. 96% of B2B buyers want content with more input from industry thought leaders.
    4. 75% of HubSpot's blog views and 90% of blog leads come from old posts

Happy to share the article instead if that's what people would prefer? Anyway, the link is below. I'd love it if you could give it a read.

I'd love to get your feedback.

PS. You should check out the full list of stats here too: https://www.hubspot.com/marketing-statistics - It's a great resource and there are some really surprising figures in there.

Tools to research trends like google trends or hashtagify?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 10:34 AM PST

Hey guys, wonderful community here :)

Currently, the trends that are shown up are very general, unless I get into each categories and filter the trends by 30 days.

What I'm trying to do is find a way to get deeper in the sub-niches of each trend.

Do you guys know a tool like those two?

Tips For Beginners On How To Start/Scale A Business

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 01:53 PM PST

I decided I want to help some of you out there that may be struggling with starting a business or scaling a business. Maybe you do not know where to start or how to scale and here are a few tips that will definitely help you out.

Now, what is one thing all businesses have in common? They all need customers, they need customers to make money of course.

The first way to get customers and a free way I might add is social media. It is great for engaging with people that are interested in your niche. By posting frequently on social media and engaging with people you will for sure grow. However, this will take some time so have some patience.

If you want to go start with social media and have some money to spare, try Instagram influencers. These influencers post other peoples content and have a ton of engaging followers so it is perfect. Just make sure the page is related to your niche. For instance, if you own a restaurant find a page that takes pictures of food. Influencer shoutouts typically cost $20 for 24 hours.

Next and probably the most important is email marketing. You can create a simple $5 ad on Facebook and collect peoples emails and build a list. If you build a list of let's say at least 100 people which is not hard at all, those are then 100 potential customers that you can turn into buyers. Email marketing is, in my opinion, the #1 most important thing in a business. It is the meat and potatoes.

Lastly is create a business alliance. Basically its a group of businesses that help each other out, so if you are a landscaper, for instance, you may want to network with a real estate agent. That way if the real estate agent gets a new homeowner they will recommend you as their landscaper and you will get business. In return, you will recommend your real estate agent whenever you find potential clients for them, see what I mean?

That is pretty much it, I wanted to make this short and sweet since I know no one wants to read a post for hours haha.

    Hope this helped!

Lesson: Gaming Instagram is hard when you don't actually have appealing content

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 01:40 PM PST

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/05/technology/personaltech/instagram-influencers-dogs-food.html

I feel like this sub constantly gets "my secret to Instagram success!" and "how instagram better???????" posts. Reading this story about a guy trying and failing to make his mashup food-dog account into a lucrative influencer could be a helpful reality check.

Does anyone here have experience starting a luxury brand?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 11:47 AM PST

I'm not new to entrepreneurship, but all of my previous (and current) endeavors relate either to utilitarian products or products aimed at middle-class buyers. Recently I've been toying around with the idea of developing a product aimed at luxury buyers, but it occurs to me that I'd be facing an uphill battle in gaining recognition and admiration in an industry full of highly-respected brand names.

Does anyone here have experience breaking through that barrier and successfully launching a brand of luxury products?

While starting my first company I created a nootropic drink mix for myself and began selling it on the side - it has outgrown my initial company and I am looking for eCommerce advice before investing heavily behind it.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 11:25 AM PST

After years in corporate America, I finally felt I was ready to start my own company. I thought I was working a lot for "the man", but I quickly learned I'd be working a lot harder for myself. To help stay focused during the long hours I became very interested in nootropics and developed my own stack. I started selling it for fun and to learn a little about eCommerce and it has quickly outgrown my initial company.

My expertise is not in eCommerce and I am overwhelmed by the number of platforms to invest in on eCommerce. Is there a playbook for the lowest hanging fruit? IE should I be running ads, working on SEO, hiring an agency to build out a nicer site or hiring someone to run programmatic?

    Really appreciate any advice: https://www.studystacknootropics.com/

How should I get in touch with decision makers in PR firms?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 03:58 PM PST

I have an effective solution for corporate-consumer communications/ORM/starting grassroot movements.

For sometime now it's been deployed with Blockchain companies, now that we've seen the impact we're looking to branch out to bigger campaigns.

It's profitable, and relatively lean. We've experienced 6 figure revenue in our first year. I'm tired of how the Blockchain industry operates, so I want to mostly get out. Most of our current clients are Blockchain PR firms, so I figure that the next step is to get in contact with mainstream PR firms.

How would I do this? I realize that the people I want to talk to have assistants that decide who gets to talk to who. I want to do something unique to get their attention. Any suggestions?

It's a high cost service, but I'm happy to do demonstrations for them. I'd actually love to do so, but for that I have to get their interest.

What's the best way to finance my business model?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 02:11 PM PST

I'm a solar professional who's taken on many operations roles in the past & I'm looking to start my own Solar PV sales business. I have an advantage with my knowledge and skills, allowing potential customers a great product at a significantly reduced price. It's furthermore reduced because I plan to run & operate the whole business entirely alone. If for any reason I sell more than I can handle, I plan to hire 1 project manager to assist on back end stuff. I should be able to make enough money for myself with only several projects per month.

With that said... I'll need to pay for permits, equipment, 3rd party contractor, etc. without getting paid until the whole project is completed & passed inspection with the utility & local AHJ. This process takes anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months (should be more consistent with my business model).

Who should be holding this money while my projects are being completed? I'd prefer to pay my contractor & the supplier ASAP as to not complicate things. Suppliers often allow credit, but many companies fall into a trap doing that (because sales people want to be paid ASAP). If I were to have a business credit card, it's limit would need to be pretty high to take on let's say 5 projects at a time. I'd estimate over $100,000

A loan seems counter-intuitive, because I would always need to get another loan, unless I saved up money for a long time to finance myself.

A credit card seems like the best option, but wouldn't I get screwed from interest every month? Is there more to it?

Should I take advantage of the supplier offering a credit system where I don't have to pay them right away? Maybe couple this with a credit card?

How much should a business invest in improving company culture (per employee)?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 01:57 PM PST

We all know the importance of having a great internal culture for the success of our businesses. It leads to better retention, employee output, CX and more. Thus, I'm curious how much is the right amount to invest in improving company culture (per employee/per year)? EG building better programs around the following:

    1. Recruitment, orientation, and employee experience
    2. Professional and leadership development
    3. Compensation and incentives
    4. Rewards and recognition
    5. The physical environment
    6. Tools and equipment

Any links / scholarly articles / answers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Just Started, and We Have Cash Flow Problems At Home

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 12:50 PM PST

Just posted this in another thread elsewhere on Reddit, but only got one response so far and am looking for more opinions.

I have a dilemma as I'm starting my new business, and I wanted your feedback--what would you do?

Took the year off from work to get some affairs in order in my personal life, and around the summer, started working on researching and setting up the business. My husband and I have long had good jobs, both making six figures, and we felt confident that, with a financial cushion set aside in the bank, in addition to my initial company investment and his income, we could weather the year without my salary, if we kept things lean. Unfortunately, we were hit over the course of the year with some large unexpected expenses. The furnace in one of our tenant's apartments needed to be fully replaced--$6k. We lost tenants in another apartment and had a vacancy for several months. Then there were repairs and work on that building as well. Car repairs. Damage from a tornado at our home...you get the picture.

Recently did a soft launch of my business this past week. There's some interest happening, but no revenues yet. This will be a very contacts and referrals-driven business, and so I started with launch announcements on social media, and a recruitment ad. Next steps would be for me to run paid ads, hit the road to shake hands and give out business cards to make sure everyone knows I'm here, and then begin expanding into neighboring states, and writing material for upcoming training classes.

However, my husband and I sat down, and he told me that this week, as I was launching, we didn't have enough in the checking account to cover the mortgage. He moved some money around to cover it, but the reserves are nearly depleted. We've got a couple months at best. We've got good credit--my available credit probably amounts to somewhere around $100k, and then my husband also has a pile of available credit--and I did apply for a loan, just to see if I could get approved. I only asked for $15k...and I was approved. But I'm SO leary to take out ANOTHER loan. It would give us working capital at home to manage things until I can start bringing income into the house, but that's more debt. Right now, I alone have about $20k in credit card debt. The business still has sufficient capital in its accounts for monthly operations and growing it, and I don't want to move it. My husband is against the loan, and wants me to go back to work in the corporate environment to bring money into the household. Of course, if I do that, I'm not building, developing, advancing, or doing much management of my business, and meanwhile, I'm paying rent on an office. Very low rent, albeit ($275/mo), but rent nonetheless. What would you do if you were at my crossroads? The loan, or go back to work?

I've made my first sale & second sale..BUT WHAT NOW?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 12:29 PM PST

First off I just want to say that I am grateful for the support I have received from strangers making purchases on my website it's always heartwarming.

Now I have initially started my business in 2016..Started going through the name selection, design & sampling process. It was very difficult especially being a full time student trying to make custom pieces of clothing with a part time job that paid so little. Now here we are in 2018 I finally managed to launch the website after having SO MANY hiccups with my manufacturer who completely BOTCHED my entire bulk order. I still managed to sell about 60% of the clothing and now 40% of it is sitting in my house. Honestly my motivation is at an all time low. I don't know what to do I'm thinking of calling it quits but I worked so hard..

I have over 10K followers on Instagram and unfortunately a lot of them have turned into ghost followers so I'm having a hard time converting them into buying. Here are a few things I come to terms with.

    I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING

I have no idea about the direction I'm going but all I know is that I want to scale & grow. I want to be dominant in my market and create amazing products.

    I SUCK AT MARKETING

I thought about it and I have no clue on how to market the business.. I have been able to sell to friends & strangers and by posting here & there on social media and recently we had black Friday & Cyber Monday which did help a lot in terms of sales.

    -

Today I am finally starting to crack I just want to drop everything.. I have no more inspiration and I feel so alone in this. I want to find a partner but I need someone who's willing to invest into this as much as I am. I have done so much on my own that it's starting to eat me and these past few days have been very hard because I have not been able to drive traffic on my site nor make any sales. If anyone has any advice or ideas that would be greatly appreciated.

And for the curious ones my business is an athletic clothing brand..Yeah, yeah I know nothing new but I love doing it I don't count my hours when I clock in and clock out it's just a passion but seeing so little to nothing in return makes it difficult to continue.

How do I get restaurants on board with my app?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 11:31 AM PST

I developed an app where by scanning a plate of food when customers order items they can see the food in front of them wherever they are using the app.

The only issue is that I need the restaurants to get on board and scan the food using the app beforehand. Is there an efficient way to get them on board?

It's frustrating because I know this is clearly the next advancement in online food ordering but I can't think of a way to get restaurants on board?

This is real software which is built already, it's not hypothetical. Everything is pretty to look at and runs smoothly. I understand that most businesses would only need select features, so I'm considering doing a modular pricing structure, but I would prefer not to.

The eCommerce features are advanced and better than anything on the market (aside from maybe a custom built Woocommerce or Magento store).

Every conceivable product combination such as composite products and subscription products can be added, it can drop ship by automatically pulling products from Amazon, Etsy, Walmart, AliExpress, Printful & 10 other dropshippers and everything sold using ecommerce is synced with the POS system via the accounting section.

The POS system works with any tablet, computer, receipt printer and magnetic card reader. The project manager can automatically create projects from a form or from products purchased.

The invoicing has advanced features such as legally binding signatures, time tracking and recurring billing. The payroll feature only calculates and sends pay slips, it doesn't send the payment.

There are over 150 add-ons, and it's integrated with Zapier so there are over 1000 integrations that can be safely and easily added as well.

    Helping Mommy Bloggers

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 10:55 AM PST

There are tons of sites to help bloggers. From growing and audience, collaborations, and SEO help it seems most things are covered. But I feel that their are 3 huge issues facing bloggers that no one is talking about.

    1. How to interact with your audience. With FB shutting down organic reach, bloggers are struggling to reach the people that love them.

    2. Having your content stolen. I constantly hear bloggers getting upset that someone stole their content and posted it on another blog.

    3. The advice on how to monetize a blog hasn't been updated in ages.

I really want to teach mommy bloggers how to solve these issues. My problem is, how do you do this? People are always trying to sell to them, promising they'll give them the "secrets" to whatever and it never works. I get their frustration. But I also think that my knowledge and time is worth something as well. How do you find the happy medium? I'm thinking of $25 for a price point to show them how to do this. Any thoughts?
