These stock options discussions run every Thursday.

Feel free to talk about options you have or ask questions on options. But before you ask any question make sure you see the following links:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell
    • If you're asking about basic terminology, see Tastytrade glossary, then feel free to ask a more in depth question afterwards, basic terms:
      • exercising an option - when you use your call option to buy 100 shares or put option to sell a 100 shares
      • strike price - The price at which stock is purchased or sold when an option is exercised
      • ITM - when a call option's strike price is below the stock price, or put's strike price is above the stock price
      • OTM - when a call option's strike price is above the stock price, or put's strike price is below the stock price
      • ATM - when the option's strike price is at or very near the stock price
      • long options (aka long call or long put) - buying options
      • short options (aka short call or short put) - selling (or writing) options
      • combo or option strategy - buying and/or selling multiple options
      • debit - what you're paying to buy an option or combo
      • credit or premium - what you're receiving (money) to sell an option or combo
      • covered call - when you buy stock and then sell calls
      • naked - when you sell calls or puts without owning stock or other options for the same stock
    • Wondering what those option strategies are: OptionsPlaybook, common combos:
      • Debit call spread (vertical debit spread) - generally a bullish combo that involves buying a call and selling a call at a lower strike; the cost of buying the spread combo is lower than just buying a call, however this reduces your max profit, but also reduces your max loss
      • Credit call spread (vertical credit spread) - generally a bearish combo that involves selling a call and buying a call at a lower strike; this reduces your max loss compared to just selling naked, but it also reduces your max profit, however you get the full credit upfront
      • Strangle - Two naked options, a call and a put, this creates a neutral combo and you profit as price stays between the two strike prices
      • Iron condor - same as the strangle except with protection, reduced profit but also reducing your max loss
    • A thorough explanation of nearly every option strategy explained by TastyTrade here
    • Book recommendations by the options community at r/options (subscribe while you're at it)

If you have a basic question, for example "what is Theta," then google "investopedia theta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

SP Down 10.5 percent from ATH making this an official correction!

The good news is that it is not as bad as Jan/Feb lows however it's only 1ish percent away from that. So we can count 2 corrections for 2018 which is twice the normal average.

Microsoft just came out with Excel stock data, and let me say it is the best thing that has come out in a while. I 100% recommend subscribing to Office 365, just $10 a month. So much easier to keep track of portfolio data. Features include: prices, daily change ($ and %), beta, market cap, 52 week and daily highs and lows, # of employees, shares outstanding, industry, p/e, volumes, and a couple more.

A few years ago before I knew better I let myself be convinced by an online article that TMD was gonna explode and I could get rich quick by buying in.

Luckily I only put in $500 but now it's worth $36. To me it's not worth the transaction cost to sell it at this point.

Do any of you invest in individual stocks listed on Exchanges from outside the US (say Euronext, LSE or Xetra, for example) or even buy ETFs that aren't denominated in USD?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 06:12 AM PST

Because if yes, there are a couple of quetions I'd like to make:

    • Imagine I want to buy shares of Gazprom (Russian Energy company), who are listed in the London Stock Exchange and, of course, quoted in pounds. Do I actually need to convert my dollars into pounds and only then buy Gazprom shares I wanna buy?

    • In a situation like this, would a stronger dollar against the pound favour me or not? Assume I do absolutely no currency hedge.

    • Will I get in trouble because of the sanctions against Russia?

    Thank you.

Extra $2,000 I have saved, looking for tips/guidance to learn trading.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 11:36 AM PST

Basicslly, the title says it all. I am currently in college and I finish in May of 2019. I have worked as a preschool teacher and soccer coach (on the side) while attending university; fortunately, I am reluctant enough to save an extra $2,000.

The purpose of this extra cash is to invest in learning how to trade. This is not money I intend to ever see again, I view it strictly as "learning money".

I would greatly appreciate any books, articles, advice, and personal opinions!! Recently I have followed this page and it has piqued my interests. Thanks again for any substantive material/advice.

    Question about market circuit breakers

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 08:15 AM PST

So far as I know there are market circuit breakers set in place to halt trading for a short amount of time in the face of large S&P market losses in a single day. Think the rules have the levels set at 7%, 13%, and 20%, and there are different amounts of time trading has to stop depending on when in the day this happens.

Has this happened before? I forget if it was happening in the 2008 recession and I'm not sure if the same circuit breakers were in place then. A 7% loss, the lowest level, seems pretty extreme -- it's on the S&P but in Dow terms, which I'm more familiar with, it'd be like a drop of nearly 2000 points.

AAPL falling to $150 would be GOOD NEWS for Long Term Apple investors.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 07:58 AM PST

    AAPL is my largest holding.

And I'm pretty jacked about Apple dropping 26% the last few months.

Why? Because I'm a long-term investor. I hold my stocks 5-10 years or even more. I really don't care about short-term price fluctuations. I do care about long term value. And for long term value it is better for Apple's share price to drop and remain 'undervalued' for months or even years.

    Why?

    BUYBACK.

Right now AAPL is worth about $800 billion. Apple has over $250 billion in cash right now. They generated $78 billion in free cash flow from operations last year. The math is pretty simple. In 4-5 years they can easily buyback HALF of the outstanding shares if the stock price remains low.

In the past because of tax law the cash balance was not very useful. But now Apple is free to spend 100% of their cash on buybacks/dividends.

It is very possible that in the next 10 years Apple could buyback 75% of the outstanding stock. That is CRAZY.

You can bet your ass that Apple is buying a ton of shares the last couple weeks.

That is the great thing about owning AAPL right now. If the stock drops, Apple will dollar cost average for YOU by buying back shares in your behalf. Basically you are getting the benefit of dollar cost averaging or 'buying the dip' without risking any of your own capital.

To illustrate the power of buybacks:

If you owned 20% of Apple before the buyback.....you would own 80% of Apple after Apple buys back 75% of its shares.

Of course for retail investors we own a much smaller stake. But the principle is the same. You will have a much larger stake in the assets of the company. With a 75% buyback your stake in company assets grows 400%.

How do you compare 2 stocks?
