Targeting a competitor's customers...when the competitor is going out of business.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:51 PM PST

One of my competitor's is basically going out of business. They got too big and had no growth plan, and couldn't keep up with business. They've since gotten an "F" from the better business bureau, multiple complaints, and they're struggling to keep up. From their facebook page updates, they're filing for Bankruptcy, and until then they're trying to refund some people and still trying to fill some orders, but it doesn't look good.

They were one of "the big boys" in my market, so I don't want their volume necessarily...but I would love to steal some of their customers. Especially when their customers are (rightly) pissed.

My question is: How do I go about doing that, ethically? I don't want to cold message their angry commenters necessarily, but considered it. Was going to do an ad campaign on Facebook targeting their audience, but have to do some more research first.

What is the best, but ethical, way to go about doing so?

    Sending 1099 Home Builder

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 03:46 AM PST

I recently started a small construction company so this will be my first year filing taxes for my subcontractors. I wanted to know if there was an online service that anyone has used to easily distribute 1099-misc to subcontractors where you pay by the form?

Are most people sending these out themselves on hand written forms? The only thing online that I was able to find was a $11/ form site but it did not seem legitimate enough to trust with my first time filing taxes. I was considering having my CPA do this but I have not spoken with him about this yet. I assumed in the year 2018 that there was something online that has simplified this process.

Projecting Profit Margins for a Craft Beer Bar (Question)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 07:13 PM PST

I'm part of a food truck that is expanding into it's first storefront in early 2019. Our model is to be a fast/casual restaurant and craft beer/wine bar. We are in the process of putting together a business plan in order to get considered for small business loans to fund this venture, and as the guy with the responsibility of running the bar portion of this operation I need to project some profit margins and operation costs for the business plan.

Problem is I have no idea where to start when it comes to projecting profits. Is there a "bar model" I can follow? Are there certain statistics I need to research on the area where the restaurant will be located? All and any help is appreciated.

TL;DR I need to project profit and operation costs for a bar serving exclusively beer and wine and I have no idea where to start.

How to increase brand awareness and sales?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 08:01 PM PST

Hey I launched my online brand via Shopify back in April. I've hit 349 followers on Facebook and approx 630 on Instagram. I've only made about 40 sales since April most of which were from friends or friends of friends. I've tried Facebook ads, running decent sales, using Instagram influencers and sending them a tee or similar to promote a long with a discount for their following. However I've made no sales this way despite having an increase in engagement rates :( Any advice on how I can increase awareness to my brand and increase sales to reach a wider audience? Thanks so much for any advice :)

Google My Business posts are not showing up for anyone else but me. Help!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 07:36 PM PST

I have recently started to utilize more of the features of the GMB app. I uploaded a post and photo for the first time last week for our small business and it went live immediately with no problems. Every few days I would try to upload another post and while it shows up in the app on my phone, the post cannot be seen by anyone else searching on desktop or mobile. What gives? I searched for info on this but most of what I came up with was year-old info basically placing the blame on bugs in the system Google had yet to work out. Are these bugs still around or am I doing something wrong? My account is verified and I have plenty of supporting info for our business filled out on our account. Has this happened to anyone else? I was excited to use this feature and I have immediately hit a road block. Thanks to anyone with some help!

Does IRS classification of "partnership" increase my personal liability with my multi-member LLC?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:36 PM PST

Complete newbie here. Hubs and I just created a LLC to provide training services to customers. We filed as an LLC in Virginia and were approved. We went to IRS.gov to get our EIN and selected "multi-member LLC". From there, the IRS tells us we are going to be taxed as a "partnership" because we have 2 members. However, we can elect to change to S or C corp status with the proper paperwork.

I'm curious...if we left our taxation as "partnership" does this increase our liability as "partners" even though we're considered an LLC by the state? Basically, if we get sued, can they go after my personal assets with the IRS partnership status? Or are we still covered by the LLC status the state granted?

How to create a unique name for a small business without it sounding stupid?

How Do I Decide How Much Inventory to Order for Opening Week?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:37 PM PST

My small business is opening in the next 3 weeks or so. However, we can't decide how much merchandise to order for opening!

    Some considerations:

    • We're entertainment rather than retail-based, but expect to do well with our merchandise based on talking to friends in the industry and the amount of press coverage expected with our opening.

    • We have somewhat limited funds until opening. So we have to be careful about wasting our funds by crazy overstocking inventory. That being said, we understand that having sufficient stock is an investment towards customer satisfaction.

    • We are limiting our initial stock to very few types of items, but a couple are shirts, which means different cuts and sizes. That's where we are really struggling.

    • Our printer is a local business. He does great work, but the turnaround is slow, so getting more products within a couple of days is not an option. It's usually 2-3 weeks.

Do you have a formula or any specific metrics you use to guess how much inventory to order before opening? After our first run we'll be able to work from initial sales, but it's tough to gauge before opening.

    Purchasing a second location

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:36 PM PST

Tell me about your ups and downs when adding a second location. I would effectively be purchasing an existing business related to my current one, but in a different area and with a different operating model. Long-term manager has agreed to stay on. What do I need to watch for? How difficult is it to add a second location?

Running a single-employee S-Corp... Stay with Xero, or switch to Wave or QuickBooks?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:01 PM PST

    I operate a single-employee (I'm the owner/only employee, pay myself a salary) S Corporation that grosses ~$125,000 before expenses.

I've been using Xero for bookkeeping/payroll for the past few years, but prices are going up DRASTICALLY at the end of the year because Xero is discontinuing their payroll product and using Gusto instead--the cost will jump from $35 to $90 a month for me.

I'd like to find another software package for accounting. It's difficult for me to justify paying $90 a month when I only have to do payroll for one employee and my accounting needs are simple. I've heard good things about Wave and HATED QuickBooks when I worked with it at my old job as an employee--the software was hard to use and customer support would take days to respond to help tickets.

    Any recommendations?

Does a partnership need a joint bank account?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:00 PM PST

Me and a friend want to go into business together. We're very close and trust each other completely. The only thing we're less sure about is how banking accounts and taxes work.

We live in different states so we don't want to do a join banking account if we don't have to. She is fine with me handling the finances, and we understand that we will be filing our taxes separately as self-employed, since this is only a partnership.

If I make the bank account, how do I ensure the IRS knows that the money in this account is split between us? Is it just another form we fill out when we file our taxes and there is nothing more to worry about? Thanks so much!

How would you describe your business’ culture?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:42 PM PST

I feel like this word gets thrown around a lot. If you had to name a good reason for someone to work at your small business besides salary/monetary reasons, what would it be?

Anyone using Etsy to sell? Any recommendations for other platforms?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:44 PM PST

I just launched my postpartum organic products business on Etsy this week and sold 15 items within 48 hours of launching. However, it's been very quiet since then and I am uncertain how to move forward. Does selling at handcrafted goods fairs work? How do you market your products (on Etsy or other platforms)?

Looking To Buy the Property That My Business Is In

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:34 PM PST

Looking for some thoughts/numbers to get a sense of wether this is something I want to entertain. The commercial property my business is in has 1 other tenant, who might be going out of business/trying to break the lease they are in. My business currently occupies more than 51% of the square footage of the property. We have no debt on the business. While I haven't checked the business credit score, we have held no credit card debt for 2 years, pay all bills on time, and have had a very successful 2018. I'd imagine we have good credit, and I have very good personal credit fwiw.

Due to the fact that at times we are hitting max capacity in the current space we are in, I'd like to entertain the idea of expanding the square footage of the business. I don't, however, want to inject capital into improving and permitting a building that I don't own (I'd rather use the money to open a new location). Given our lease payments, it seems that if we were to purchase the building and expand our business to occupy the entire property, I feel that we wouldn't be paying much more towards a SBA loan than we are currently paying to our landlord in rent. I could, however, be mistaken on this because in reality I don't know what our monthly payments on the SBA loan would look like.

Looking for insight into the loan to value criteria for SBA loans like the one I am looking to apply for, debt to income criteria for an SBA loan, the down payment amount, and most importantly what our monthly payments would be (based on the loan amount/down payment amount/tax/etc). For the sake of round numbers, say the purchase price of the building is 3,000,000, and we put 10% down, what are our monthly payments going to look like?

Finally, it is my understanding that it is possible to create an LLC in Delaware that "owns the property" and collects the rent payments, thus helping to avoid paying state income tax on the rental income. I don't believe thats a possibility for this loan (since it would be an SBA loan for the current business), but also curious if structuring the "owner of the property" in this way would be a possibility.

Long post. Thanks to all who read and give advice.

Probably a better subreddit for this, but what’s the best way to project only certain items onto a TV where we can show things to customers?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:24 PM PST

From both Apple and Windows computers?

Right now a customer comes in and they hunch over and look at our laptop while we put things together, sometimes we have to jump back and forth between price lists as we negotiate. It would make it easier if they sit a bit further away and I can show them only what I want them to see on a small TV somehow.

    Apple TV? ChromeCast? Something better?

    Thanks

S Corp Tax Question - Can I reimburse myself for 2018 business expenses (paid on my personal credit card)in 2019.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:32 AM PST

Here is the situation: Early in 2018 I charged a few thousand dollars of business expenses on my personal credit card. I might not have the money to reimburse myself by the end of December, but I will in January. Truth be told, I would rather push them off to January as I am going to have a lot more income next year and will need the expenses then. Is this OK to do, tax-wise?

    Deduct Groupon Advertising Costs

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:23 AM PST

Groupon (I know I know they gouge you.) and I have set up a deal. I provide my service (Typically @$200) and they give out coupons ($100/service) and I split the money made from them with groupon. (I get $50 they get $50).

Can I write off the $50 they get as an advertising expense? If not they're absolutely not worth it because I can't afford to preform a service for 1/4 of it's normal cost AND pay income tax of 33% on it.

    Thanks

I Think The Service My Wife Used To Set Up Her LLC Did It Incorrectly

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:30 PM PST

My wife just started her LLC this week for her own PR Firm.

We live in Florida and obviously created an LLC for the business. We opened a UPS Business Mailbox for the mailing address, but also needed a Registered Agent for the business when opening the LLC since we didn't want to list our home address.

We used a service called Northwest Registered Agent and they act as your Registered Agent so you don't have to list your home address with the state. The paperwork finally cleared today and I noticed all the addresses on Florida's LLC site list the Registered Agent Address.

Here's a look. Principal, Mailing, Registered Agent and Name and Address all have the same address (the Registered Agent Address). Does this look right?

We wanted to use our UPS Business Address for whatever we could and only use the Registered Agent Address where it was legally required by the state.

Can anyone give me advice on how we do this properly since all the addresses listed are the Registered Agent Address? I called Northwest Registered Agent and they said they could update this to how we wanted it...I just want to make sure we do it properly before making the changes.
