    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 09:06 AM PST

Feel free to talk about fundamentals such as tools, terms, and other important aspects of the investing world here; post your arguments against here and not in the current post.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

    Google Stream

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 09:53 AM PST

I'm a beta tester for Google Stream. It's public knowledge that this project is in the works, but few people really know how well it works.

Let me tell you: It works great. If you have a strong internet connection, it is no different than playing on a powerhouse PC locally. I strongly believe this is the future of PC gaming.

I don't know the plan for rolling out this program, but I do believe that once rolled out, it will make Google a notable distributor of video games within a year.

Locally hosting will of course still have its place with people with poor internet connections, but that market will dwindle over time as gigabit internet becomes the standard over the coming decade. Local hosting will always have some place with people who value DRM-Free gaming (such that they will maintain ownership no matter what), but streaming will be the dominant form of PC gaming within the decade.

I'm not suggesting you invest now. I'm only suggesting that you keep your eye out on this service. I have high confidence in saying that it will be massively profitable for Google if they monetize it appropriately.

    Different Perspective of Stocks

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 11:38 AM PST

    Hello, all!

So I have seen many posts here dealing with specific answers and advice on stocks. I come here asking a different sides of things. I am interested in hearing the response to the quote, "In 1849, prospectors went to California to get rich, but only to see that it wasn't them getting rich; it was the businesses selling pickaxes, sifters, supplies, and jeans that got rich".

In this quote, what are modern day examples that are benefitting from the businesses that have caught fire (good and bad way) recently. I am asking if any vertical or horizontal intergration businesses are doing great even though we haven't heard of them.

    Thank you for your time!

    Best Paper Trading Platform?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 10:35 AM PST

    What's up guys.

As mentioned in the title, what's the best paper trading platform to start out and get a feel of the market before losing all my money (heh, jokes). I am currently using the Investopedia game, but since it is delayed, it is kind of tedious regarding day trading (since I can look at a screener and see the actual time versus 15 min delay).

So, what's the best way to paper trade to keep it as close to the market as possible for day / swing trading.
    Thanks!

    Is IBM a bargain?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 06:44 AM PST

Although their stock is the lowest in nearly 10 years, their acquisition of RedHat this year shows IBM is poised to make a presence in the cloud market. Are they a good investment opportunity?

I'm having trouble understanding oil stocks.

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 12:03 AM PST

I have never before invested in the oil commodity market. But recently, Ive been watching the movement in some oil stocks (MRO, WTI, DIG/DUG, OILU). The low prices are starting to become enticing. But before I start investing in this market, I have few questions about these stocks and the driving forces behind their prices. All help is appreciated.

    1. How do rising oil prices affect these underlying stocks? (I know it probably isnt 1-to-1 correlation) but generally do oil prices changes indicate any directional change in stock prices?

    2. Can anyone ELI5 why oil has fallen so low so fast recently?

    3. Recent news of oil production shortages. How is this expected to affect the oil market? I assume this is one reason for low stock prices currently.

    4. What other news developments in the oil market world typically affect stock prices? (middle east news? global warming news? EPA and its regulation?) Any/all correlations you all have noticed, I'd love to hear.

Thank you in advance. I just want to get a better understanding of this commodity and its driving factors before I invest.

Disclosure: I have no shares/positions on any oil stocks at the time of submitting this post.

How does shorting a stock work?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 08:39 AM PST

Sort of new to actively trading on the market.

I understand that it is betting against the stock, but how does it work? If I wanted to bet against the market, would I just short an index like $SPY?

    Thanks in advance!

I've been playing with Shopify for quite a while and it has been very good to me. Right now I'm messing around with some Aphria in the weed sector because of some major volatility.

Any stocks that have been good for your swings?

Small cap home care company that grows by acquisition

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 12:15 PM PST

There is a small cap company called Nova Leap Health that are in the home care industry, this is one of the fastest growing industries in USA and Canada, and something I want to invest in. I found a company that IPO'ed in 2016 and it has grown its revenues to $15 million acquiring businesses by issuing equity and taking on debt. I just can't figure out if their acquisition strategy will create shareholder value in the long term. They acquire other home care businesses at around 0.5x revenues, and 4x EBITDA. My worry is that the business model is too simple, and market cap too small. Do you guys think this $18 million company trading at $0.30 will actually be successful in their acquisition strategy, or will current shareholders end up being washed out?

Will 2018 end with a sideways market?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 11:02 AM PST

Doesn't seem like there is substantial volume and/or impactful news influencing the markets this afternoon.

Market seems to be overall experiencing sideways movement today. You all predict that to change? Seems like a cliffhanger end to a crazy year...

I am also curious if any company has ever lost $350 billion in market value as fast as Apple has lost it before?

Questions about WM (Waste Management)....too much leverage?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 09:19 PM PST

Latest long term debt figure from Q3 balance sheet of this year looks to be about $9.6 Billion, but seems like the company has done about $3 Billion in Operating Cash flow the past few years and look to be on pace to reach that target by the end of 2018 as well. They've done quite a bit to improve their margins as well. The company seems to be vertically integrated nicely and the barriers to entry are quite high for the space, so it seems like they can enjoy some economies of scale. But I also know management has been somewhat focused on stock buybacks as well and I can't help but wonder if that's what is driving the EPS growth story artificially and inflating the stock price as a result. The debt picture is somewhat concerning since we are moving towards a higher rate environment and I'm just wondering whether the cost of servicing such debt will become more expensive and eat away at margins/earnings. Curious to hear other people's thoughts, I know reading around I see a lot of people buy into WM as sort of a defensive play, especially ahead of a recessionary type environment and I'm wondering if the stock is a good buy at this point. Certainly seems to have grown at a slow and steady pace over the past few years, and lower historic Beta makes it attractive as well from a volatility standpoint. Though, I'm struggling to find out what the Trailing Twelve Month's P/E Ratio is. On Yahoo finance it says it is about 16.7 but Bank of America says 22.4? Any insights on this? Thanks for all the input in advance.

    Spy puts filled at $.01?!

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 01:12 AM PST

I am a newbie investor trying to build skills in the market with relatively small amounts of money as I am new.

Yesterday I placed a limit order for: Spy 225p 12/28 expiration, with a bid of $.02/share. I had absolutely no expectations to get it filled, but Lo and behold, it was filled at $.01!

I would greatly appreciate advice, as it expires today and i dont know what price to sell it for, as the volume on the option is too low for a real market price. Also, it occurs to me that the chances that im missing something definitely outweighs the chances that i hit the lottery. Any input appreciated! Thanks!

Edit: "hitting the lottery" refers to me selling the options before expiration for what i assume is a tasty profit. I dont expect Spy to hit that low of a strike price.

    Looking for stock recommendation(s)

    Posted: 28 Dec 2018 10:17 AM PST

    Criteria:

    • Must be under $45 per share
    • Must be at least mid-cap. No penny stocks or speculative small cap stocks.
    • Dividend yield must be at least 2%
    • EPS must be positive for last 3 quarters
    • Must not be an IPO from within the last 5 years
    • U.S. only - no ADRs, no China
    • No: GE (already have, cue sad violin), F (don't like), Under Armor (similar to F), AMD (don't believe), T (already have)
    • Preferably something that's not too complicated (e.g. I prefer not to buy stuff I don't understand like "gene replicant splicing technology" or something like that)

    Any recommendations?
