New Career Path Sales and Selling

    New Career Path

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 07:36 AM PST

Pretty excited to be starting a new career path in sales. Been in manufacturing and machining for last 22 years, from running CNC Machines to being a Manufacturing/Machining Manager. I was presented with an opportunity to sell machines by a very reputable company, one that I have personally bought over $9M in capital from. This is very different from my normal way of life - I will work from home, spend a lot of time driving and visiting existing and potential customers in my territory. The idea of a base + commission was the biggest drawback for me, as I am just not used to this. I have spent a lot of time on r/sales, reading, absorbing and getting to understand this new world I am diving into.

What gift would prospects actually appreciate and give a place in their office?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 07:54 AM PST

My boss allows me to spend around 10-20k euro's on gifts to give to potential customers. It needs to be a gift that stands out that they wouldn't easily throw away and would give a nice place in their office.

The goal is to go in the potential customers office and ask if the DMU is available for a quick conversation. If he's not then I drop off the present with some flyers and follow up later.

An example of this is a company selling teacher trainings to schools. They dropped off bonsai trees with a note that said "everything needs a little bit of care". They spent 10k on the trees and made more than 300k from them.

Now we don't sell teacher trainings, but custom software development services. What would be some gifts that suite our service and people would give a nice place in their office. The cost of one gift should be around 50 - 100 euro's.

I don't want to call clients back

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 07:06 PM PST

If something is going array/negative with a file in my pipeline, I sometimes ignore the problem all together and just hope it goes away. This provides poor service to the client and only stresses me out more. Yet I continue to allow this to happen. I don't know why. Does anyone know why this happens and how I can mentally get past this and end it once and for all?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 08:36 AM PST

I just want to see if this is something I even want to get into. Ive read online stories about people calling leads and doing this and that posting internet ads but I want to hear it from a real person. Not someone who makes money tryin to run a blog.

    Evaluating a Sales Rep

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 08:28 AM PST

As you all know...the end of the year is time to evaluate sales reps. I have one particular rep who covers the Mid-Atlantic. He was a BDR and has been in the role for a few months but hasn't really been producing and I am thinking about letting him go.

What are the factors I should or shouldn't consider in a reps performance? Have any of you been "late bloomers" in a role and then crushed it?

Help with an interview for Inside sales rep

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 10:36 AM PST

    Hello Reddit,

I have a 3rd interview with a finacial hedge fund company for an inside sales role.

From what I gather I will be cold calling investment advisors to create meetings for the external rep to close the sale.

I have 10 years of banking experience with only 2 years, the very beginning, at the branch level - where did I well in sales. Other than that I have done mostly administration roles in high-end finance. I want to break into sales and this role will pay double what I was making before.

What are some things I can say or highlight to offset my lack of sales experience?

Working my first sales job. It requires cold calling existing customers. I can never seem to generate business from the prospect. Any tips?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 12:49 PM PST

I know existing customers aren't exactly cold, but to new reps such as myself, it's cold since they have not worked with me. On top of that, some of these customers already "belong" to other reps, making it even more difficult to acquire their business. I can't seem to get any of these people to come into our store to meet me, and I've tried both calling and texting. Are there any ideas out there for this particular situation?

What are some of the hottest brand names to work for in SaaS right now? (you can PM me too)

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 12:46 PM PST

So I got a job offer and am looking to get a lot out of this job hunt as an SDR/BDR who eventually wants to get moved to AE. The Saleforce and LinkedIns of the world are always going to be hot as are the SAPs and Oracles and IBMs. What are some of the major brand names in SaaS right now that are making waves and are great to work for in terms of being someone younger and more recently out of college?

Any companies set to be the next Mulesoft or Salesforce?

Looking to leave cell phone sales

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 08:49 AM PST

I've been the assistant manager at a cellphone kiosk for one of the big four carriers for about a year and a half now. I have solid numbers about 65 new activations per month, 25 upgrades and 15 tablets. Im getting tired of the mall scene and want to transition out of cell phones entirely by the end of January. This was my first real sales position and I did fairly well in it. What kind of jobs should I look to next. What places hire people with little experience?

Opinions On This Position? First Sales Job

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 11:46 AM PST

    Hello you money makers,

Had my first phone interview (first step in a 3-4 step hiring process) for a SDR role in a SaaS company (~85 employees, $10-25 Million/year). Seems like a friendly environment, with it's benefits and drawbacks. I want to set myself as best I can, so I wanted to post some notes from the interview and get some perspective from the veterans here:

    - This is a NEW program for them. They have not had SDRs before. They are looking to hire 3 people, and I asked if they would have training, to which she did say yes and explained in detail. Training would be from people who are stationed in other parts of the country however (US), so I'm not sure if this is seen as a negative.

    - Isn't looking for high volume calls. She emphasized 30-40 quality calls a day. No 100-200 days. Again, I'm not sure if this hinders my development, or is actually better for me.

    - She mentioned that the role is not a lot of relationship building.. so the main goal is to get them set up with an AE. I know that part is common, but (I'm just asking here) do all SDR roles involve minimal relationship building? I've always thought trust was important.

    - I won't ever be communicating with AE's face to face. We all communicate over Slack.

    - They are a transparent and a fun cultured company. I've done my research on this and have seen evidence. Looks like stress wouldn't be as high.

    - Don't know salary yet, and don't am unaware if commission is capped or not. They do offer benefits (M,D,V) and 401k matching after 90 days.

    ----

What are your thoughts on this? I'm willing to provide more information if I have it. The software is good, and it benefits schools, but I was wondering if the low volume calls and the fact that this is a brand new role in the company is not the best start for my career.

    Thank you all!

Choosing your customer? ( SMB - Mid Market - Enterprise)

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 11:44 AM PST

I am currently in SMB Saas sales with a short sales cycle and low contract values. I often wonder if I might be better at selling to a larger customer with a longer sales cycle.

Does anyone have any advise about the different types of customer types out there and the different types of sales reps that go well with them?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Which position should I choose?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 07:17 AM PST

I'm in my first job out of college in Biz Dev. I've been in it for 7 months and I've recently been recognized. I was offered to join this advanced program in the company that usually higher level people go to. I'll be the lowest level person there with the least amount of experience that's for sure.

When my district manager was telling me this she asked where I was interested in going within the company. They know I was interested in Inside Sales since my interview when I told them but also in leadership since I've displayed a lot in that regard.

There is a third option she seemed to say that would be good for me. It's sort of like Biz dev on steroids. I would be meeting with executives in person, talking to multiple on the phone at one, and essentially convincing one person to utilize someone else's program. I'd be sort of the middle man who shepherd's people. I would be able to meet with a lot of higher level people, go on business trips, and I feel its somewhere in between Biz Dev and sales. A lot of people see this as a big part of the future of the company but they say that about sales too.

Everyone sees the third option as making a lot of money in the future and it will be more exclusive when that happens as more people will go after it. However, I dont know how much and I know it's possible to make 100k in the sales position so there is uncertainty there.

Can someone give me advice? I'm early in my career so I honestly dont have a lot of experience to go off of.

I probably blew a sales deal

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 06:06 AM PST

Late January I was approached for a potential partnership by a company. We did the calls, presentations, follow-ups. Tried to give them a fair and competitive offer, after all that we never heard back from anybody. It's almost a year after, the original case worker left the company and nobody of the department email is "home".

What are the chances this deal is completely dead. Are there any tips how to revive lost deals/chances like this?

Favorite data enrichment solution? (Upload company domain > get details)

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 05:51 AM PST

    Hi r/sales!

I'm currently looking for a data enrichment solution where I can upload a list of domains and it returns the following:

    • Estimated headcount
    • Estimated revenue
    • Location
    • CEO name and email address

We've used DataFox in the past, BUT it's extremely expensive. Any other alternatives?

    Help with Data

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 01:02 AM PST

    Hi r/sales.

I recently left F2F sales to take on a lead gen position with a small solar company. It's been very easy transitioning into cold calling as tonality was my greatest skill. But ive started to notice that our cold calling data is old. Some sheets as old as 10 years. Most averaging 3. This really wastes a tonne of time as we are calling specific post codes to book consultation appointments for our reps. The owners clearly don't care/know how to find up to date data but how would i go about finding up to date data for residential numbers? Are their sites who sell them? Where does one start to look?

Also we have no Auto Dial setup. I see this being a massive time waster at work since we burn hours of everyday manually dialling. Can anyone recommend good AutoDial programs so I can propose them to owners?

Also any cold calling tips would be appreciated. Super new. No training process, just kinda winging it

Would you recommend commission or non-commission sales, and why?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 03:13 PM PST

High performer at a non-commission job, and am considering swapping to commission gig in the same field. Our team bonuses monthly, but I am consistently the highest performing member. Feel as though I could be more successful if I was only judged upon my own performance.

Pros / cons from either side would be appreciated.

How do you get comfortable making calls around others?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 09:32 PM PST

Started a new job recently where I'm expected to make anywhere between 60-100 calls a day. I've only been making 10-20 per day so far but it will pick up very soon. These calls I've been dreading mostly because the line of work I'm in is completely new and I'm not too knowledgeable on the service/business yet. Also the way the desks are set up you're sitting right next to others without any walls separating the desks so everyone can see each other pretty much. I'm hoping this anxiety/fear will go away as I learn this line of business more. Do any of you have this problem or have experience this? What did you do to fix this or get more comfortable making calls around others?
