Leaving business ownership and going back to 'regular employee life'? small business

Leaving business ownership and going back to 'regular employee life'?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 11:31 AM PST

Hi guys- I've owned the business I started 11 years ago and am considering moving on. The main reason is I want leaving small business life is I'm ready to physically move to a different town and my business is food/drink brick and mortar and I can't take it with me. However, I have other reasons too. I'm getting slightly burned out by what is now a fairly repetitive job, the endless customer critiques (almost none of whom have ever owned a small business) and the never-ending fees, licenses and taxes that come along with my type of establishment. It doesn't pay enough to keep me in it for the work I'm doing and as many small biz owners have probably learned there's perhaps more money to be made being an employee and leaving all the details and worry to someone else. However, I will miss the biggest job perk- the freedom to set my own schedule. I also want to get out of customer service all together. As an owner it's exhausting! And one more reason is in a few months I'll have 3 years left on the lease and that seems like a good time to sell.

I guess I mostly wanted to start a discussion about post-small business life and get other folk's experiences, pros and cons.

One thing that scares me a bit is I want to move on from my field but really don't have a lot of skills that would apply to a more professional level job. I dread the idea of going back to my old work at a grocery store or something similar. I like the respect that being a biz owner gives me (even if it's undeserved haha) and going to a job where I would be less enthusiastic about sharing with strangers what I do doesn't sound like fun. I think I had this idea when I opened my place that it would eventually lead to financial independence so I would never have to worry about this but of course, this hasn't been the case.

One example I know of is a friend of mine owned a breakfast joint. When that folded he moved and got a job working for a company that owns 100s of vacation rentals. I Guess I could look for things like that? Something with a bit more autonomy and that would be called an 'adult' job. Fortunately I have been good with the money I have made so I won't be forced to take a job out of desperation. In fact, my dream was to eventually take jobs that felt like I was retired like work at a ski resort or as a kayak guide, etc. But I think I need something a little more stable for a few years.

Anyone have a story to share about when they left small biz ownership?

How do you keep from taking things personally as a small business owner?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 08:41 PM PST

Social media is driving me crazy, and when I see a friend or someone I know well has hired someone else to do what my company does, I take it super personal and can't seem to get past it! I've done well this year and I'm confident in my work but I'm having trouble not taking things so personal like this when they happen.

Growing past the 10th employee. How did you do it?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 12:00 PM PST

The process is always the same. You start out offering a service that is in high demand. Start hiring people. Customers are happy. You get some momentum and grow slowly. You get to that point where you are making good money but life is miserable and you are constantly running around putting out fires. A few weeks of good times and then a key employee quits and its back to a mad scramble and long hours. Process repeats itself.

How did you break through this point?

It seems that so many small business owners get to this point and then just spend eternity here working their lives away.

Growing a small business. How did you go about about delegating your business tasks?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 11:13 PM PST

How did you go about he delegating administrative tasks such as answering phone calls, scheduling appointments, etc when you started growing your business. I'm currently a one-man army and handle everything by myself. I don't mind it but I realize that I'm working in my business rather than on it (e-myth.)

Would it be better to hire an actual employee to handle administrative/receptionist duties or outsource this job to a virtual assistant ? Which did you find better for your business and why ?

Appreciate all good info and insights on how to grow the business and get to the next level.

All the best, and happy holidays everyone!

Do you barter with your customer/other business to save cost?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 09:30 PM PST

We all know that as a small business owner cashflow is quite tight. I believe there is so many services I would like to get like a casual blogger, evaluate my website, consultation, instagram posts, help on etc.

Have any of you ever barter your products to save cost? Could you share me how you do that?

If there is no solution I think this is a good business opportunity especially if we introduce a crypto barter or something.

Service business profit traps - share your ideas on creative cost cutting

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 08:37 PM PST

After three years of aggressive growth, I'm really interested in maximizing profit in 2019 while maintaining at least healthy growth. A big part of that is taking a step back from growth activities and focusing on operations.

Here are a few decisions I'm toying with:

1.) dropping collision insurance and self insuring my 4 service vans 2.) car wash contracts or self-washing vehicles instead of the crew paying $12 a wash 3.) cutting express tolls - tough balance since the crew are paid hourly so drive time costs ~$20 an hour in payroll. Better to keep paying express tolls? 4.) buying products in greater bulk quantities (55 gal vs 5 gal drums) 5.) reducing/eliminating ad spend on borderline profitable adwords keywords thereby reducing total spend but impacting growth... my philosophy to this point was if I break even after conversion costs, payroll and other costs, it's still worthwhile from a customer lifetime value acquisition perspective. 6.) drop my umbrella insurance (I have $1MM GL plus an extra $1MM umbrella).

Thoughts on these? Other creative ideas to save costs or cut unneeded spend in a service based business (carpet cleaning, though this should apply across many similar businesses).

Any Handyman bizs out there that could hint on what they focused on to grow their business? Right now it seems like I’m trying to do everything from painting, power washing, drywall repairs to small plumbing jobs and carpentry. Would love to find a more niche business model.

Would you like a BOT to interact with your Online Business Applications?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 09:40 PM PST

    Hi -

We thought a BOT that can talk to your Online business Application (e.g. accounting package or CRM) would come in handy for small business owners. They can have the key information at the comfort of their mobile without depending on someone. For example, if they want to know about the pending invoices/bills, it is readily available for him without asking his accountant or IT people. Similarly, if you need to key-in a bill while you are on travel, you can just do it minimally. Does that sound something useful?

Our team has created a BOT that can work with ZOHO Books accounting package using Slack Messenger. We are looking for small business owners to use this & provide feedback about the usefulness of this for them. To add, since we only provide a connecting service, the information exchanges stay in the context of the customer account they use to authenticate with Slack/ZB.

If you are interested to test and provide us with feedback, you can submit your request through https://www.incox.net/contact (or) send an email to [contact@incox.net](mailto:contact@incox.net). We'll enable it for you at free of cost.

In case if you need this for a different accounting package say Quick Books, do let us know. Outside of it, you can also just leave your feedback comments on your thoughts on this topic.

    Best Regards,

    Team - INCOX.

Route management / Area of responsibility for Mobile Mechanic

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 04:40 PM PST

    Hi there!

First off - I did a search here, but didn't come up with anything that I saw would fit what I need, so I thought I'd reach out and see if anyone knows of something that would fit the bill.

I am looking for a piece of software that will allow me to input a bunch of different addresses and create a mileage radius around those points to be able to determine areas of responsibilities for mobile mechanics. This wouldn't be a delivery service, or even a daily stop - just need to be able to see how many mechanics would be required to service the customer base.

Currently using MS Power BI with ArcGIS to create the map, but I am finding that it's not very intuitive, and I cannot export a list of points covered by a radius.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance!

    Invoice Tracking

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 03:48 PM PST

    HELLO!

I work for a small business that is doing basically everything on paper. I would like to help push my firm into electronic filing, slowly. I am currently looking for software or a program that let's me create, track, and run reports for invoicing. I do not need accounting software that tracks expenses as well (if that is included, totally acceptable). I would prefer something with time tracking (not necessarily for invoicing purposes, just for record purposes). I've come across some accounting software that have free features, and not all of them lay out their options and features. If anyone has used programs for these purposes I'm just looking for some recommendations. Many, many thanks!

Do i need to keep my physical receipts if all my business purchases are done online?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 03:04 PM PST

I have a business bank account/card that I use to purchase all of my business needs (supplies, parking, equipment etc.). Do I need to keep the receipts? My Quickbooks account automatically tabulates all expenses to their appropriate accounts when it pulls it from my business bank account.

Is there any point other than just good record keeping?

Want to learn how to do payroll

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 02:16 PM PST

TL;DR: No bookkeeping/accounting experience, want to start by learning how to do payroll. What is the best way to learn this? California, USA

    Hello!

I work for a small business as the office manager. There are lot's of opportunities for me to grow, one would be for me to take over payroll.

I was planning on returning to school this spring for computer information systems (community college then transfer to state univ.). Now I am thinking I should study something that would help me become the bookkeeper. Maybe just a certification? Or should I go for an associates?

In the 3 months I've worked here, my wage has gone from $14 to $18, and the owner says it can keep going up depending on how valuable I am to the company. He paid a past office manager $30/hr.

I chose computer information systems because; I want to make more money, I am good with people, and computers. I will probably still get a degree in CIS but this current job is making me think I should put CIS on the back burner and focus on learning more about bookkeeping.

Any advise on how to learn payroll? I have no accounting/bookkeeping education or experience (Just what I am learning from this current job)

    Thanks in advance

    Determining $/hr as a contractor

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 01:37 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I do home automation work and have for a while, but got let go back in May. Since then I've been doing odds and ends to make money and have done some contract work building gear on a per job basis.

This same company has now come to me with contract work in a different part of the industry only this time, they've asked what it would cost on a per hour basis (more suited to this portion of the industry, more design than labor)

How do I come up with a per hour rate with the company? This is my first foray into the industry as a contractor and I need any info I can get.

    Thank you
