[US] Being Downvoted in Ride Sharing Subreddits

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 03:18 PM PST

Is there a point to explaining 'IRS Mileage Rates' to non-accountants in ride sharing subreddits?

I've tried explaining that my actual net income for a year's worth of driving for the various ride sharing apps (Uber/Lyft/etc.) was only $3.22 per hour.

Here is my explanation video - https://youtu.be/shNk1_oH6d4

I have been downvoted to oblivion for suggesting to use IRS mileage rates, instead of the actual gas costs to figure the actual net income for driving for ride sharing apps.

I suspect these subreddits are monitored by the PR arms of the ride sharing apps....

Leaving Big Four after one busy season?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 07:16 PM PST

Title says it all. I am not a fan of PA, but I enjoyed my time interning in industry. I sent out a few applications for F500 PDPs I think I am competitive for. Do you think my chances will be hurt by being in Big Four for such a short amount of time? Do you think this is a poor career move?

Is 29 too late to obtain an accounting degree?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 06:41 PM PST

Hi everyone I am currently in business school trying to obtain my bachelors in accounting, I am 26 so by the time I finish I'll be 28-29; is that too late to start an accounting career? Should I switch majors? I would really appreciate some feedback thanks in advance!

Will I enjoy big four if I don’t have much of a social life already?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 04:48 PM PST

Title says it all...about to start in big four tax this week and while I am anxious about the long hours, I really don't have a big social life. I have a few close friends but we don't even hang out too often since everyone is busy with their own lives. I also don't have a significant other so that's not an issue either. I'm not really a super social person to begin with and am definitely introverted, so I was wondering if I'll actually be ok with the long hours?

Tattoo on forearm would it affect my job prospects?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 07:21 PM PST

I am currently in my sophomore year of college currently majoring in accounting. Now, whether or not I stick with it, that has yet to be decided. But anyways I have flirted around with the idea of getting a sleeve on my forearm. It'd be a nature themed tattoo so obviously it would not be offensive. However, I am quite on the edge about it because I am worried it could affect my ability of acquiring a job. Is the accounting field pretty conservative? Should I just avoid getting a tattoo to be safe?

When do you know it’s time?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 08:46 PM PST

Hi all! I'm a senior entering my fourth busy season. I took the week between Christmas and New Years off and have been doing some soul searching. I have this sick feeling about entering another bish season and am curious at what point do you know it's time to throw in the towel? I'm all about working hard, doing good work and pulling my weight, but I'm bored to death by what I do. I sit there yawning all day and then come home and end up passing out because I'm drained from the day. I'm not sure if it's just public accounting or accounting as a whole that I don't enjoy. Have any of you been in this situation? Any advice? I'm not going to throw in the towel now, I'd wait until after busy season but I can't help but wonder how my life would change if I was doing something I enjoyed. Thanks!

Anyone here ever consider a career in Supply Chain Management?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 11:00 AM PST

I'm taking analytics, procurement, planning..etc. I noticed some people decide between a career in Supply chain vs Accounting and I am in the same boat. I think the idea of working specifically in consumer-packaged goods industries would be good for SC route in Canada, however, the abundance of job opportunities in accounting is more 'safe' to me.

Has anyone ever had a job in Supply Chain analytics? what made you decide to do accounting after or vice versa?

    Question about Commuter Card

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 06:27 PM PST

I have this Commuter Benefits card where pre-tax money gets loaded onto a sort of credit card from my paycheck primarily for my monthly train pass. I didn't use it much for the past month and a half since I was staying at a hotel by the client mostly, so I have a good chunk sitting there--am I allowed to use it on travel besides normal commuting? I.e. if I went on vacation and wanted to book a flight, can I use that card? Amtrak? I just wasn't sure if that would get flagged, I don't wanna get in trouble but I don't want to have to whittle it down on NYC Subway rides until the extra goes away as well.

Anyone with experience using this? Would appreciate any insight!

How did you discover what your passion was in Accounting or Finance?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 10:17 AM PST

TL;DR: How did you discover what your passion was in accounting (tax, risk, IT, audit) or finance? Number crunching seems so dull and so doesn't seem to spark creativity in the workplace, so how did you decide this was what you wanted to do? Was it just a matter of what made the most salary?

I just find it conceptually hard for a person to say "boy, am I passionate about number crunching and month-end analysis!"

I'm one year from graduating and I still haven't figured out what my passion is in life. I've tried Financial Reporting (lots of month-end, repetitive work), and IT/Technology analytics (really boring, didn't have much responsibilities). I'm in a Business program, with mathematics, but have yet to try out courses like Taxation, Intermediate Accounting, and my time is running out if I want to decide on whether I want to pursue a CPA or CFA.

    • Finance -- All the intro finance classes I was required to take, didn't come easily for me, and I didn't enjoy learning about it. So I don't think it's for me and hence I should probably rule out going for a CFA (boy will my parents be mad since they see CFA/finance as a good way to earn money :/ ) I just hated all the bond/stock calculations, M&A,..etc all that stuff

    • Accounting -- Like I said, I'm going to be taking Tax next year and we'll see how I like it. Other than that I've only taken the intro accounting managerial class and they were okay. Nothing hard, but tbh pretty dull work :/ We'll see how tax goes, but again, I'm running out of time :(

    • Marketing -- I'm quite introverted, and not that good at selling myself, but I was pretty good in this course and the content was pretty interesting to learn about. I didn't know how all these parts intertwined finance, accounting, operations in marketing but the case studies were interesting to discuss in class. Again, don't know if sales/marketing is for me because I'm soft spoken. Also, Marketing job salaries in Canada are pretty low iirc.

    • Supply Chain -- This is something I was thinking of exploring but I feel it's risky. It combines technical competencies, finance, accounting marketing knowledge, and most often is for tangible items. Though I've never had an internship in SC, I've taken an intro Operations class that was somewhat interesting. I'm iffy to pursue it because I don't want to realize I hate it but then it'd be tough to go from SC to accounting. I was thinking maybe working at a CPG company like Pepsi or Loblaws in the finance/accounting department would be good then, because it'd combined most of the areas above in this role???

Through my school program, I have one more internship to try something new out. But it's hard to decide what to do. How did you know what you wanted to do in life as your career? Why did you decide to get your CPA or CFA?

Is it worth selling my soul to the life of accounting if it means living a comfortable life? [CAN]

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 11:17 AM PST

I didn't grow up with a lot of money from my parents and they worked hard to put me through school and support me. Now, all they want from me is to make good money so that I can financially support myself, and possibly help them out when they grow older. Thus, I'm in a situation where I kind of am leaning towards a job that makes a comfortable amount.

I'm not good at coding thus Software Dev aren't what I'd do, and I don't have the will power (or intelligence) to go for the IB jobs. I'm literally not good at many things, so I figured a CPA and industry accounting job would be decent path for me. I'm a Math major minoring in Economics and Business btw, so it'd kind of odd for me to settle for accounting and waste this potential. Maybe I should consider Risk Management, Risk Advisory or something else data related? (IDK :/ Advice????)

Though my interests fall in environmental studies, that's not viable in terms of job markets in Ontario, Canada (and also why I didn't pursue an Environment/Business degree). So, to all you accountants, is it worth selling my soul to the life where I work in an accounting role, if it means living a comfortable life? What would it take to earn ~ 60K out of school, given I'll have cumulatively works 16 months of intern experience in areas that include analyst and reporting work in banks and insurance firm?

Is a CPA worth getting if I'm not interested in working public? [CAN]

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 09:50 AM PST

There's really 2 key things I value in the company/position that I hope to work in once I graduate from uni:

    • Making a good salary - My goal is to hit 90K after working about 4-5 years (don't know if this is possible?)
    • After many internships, what I reaaallyy value is good company culture. If it means being excited to go work due to the fact that the company has great morale, work environment and work/life balance, I'll be happy

Overall consensus on this subreddit seems to be that working in public (ESPECIALLY as a Canadian) really sucks. Yes, it looks great on the resume getting big4, but I don't think in my personal finanical situation could live with 35-45K after graduating, grinding through long hours and boring company culture after graduating. I think maybe working industry would be better for me since my last experience working for corporate accounting, the work/life balance was good, however monthends and repetitiveness was kind of boring (however, I was an intern, so I wasn't expected to the same grind or long hours as my manager lol)

Having said this and my two goals, would CPA be something I should consider if my end goal isn't to stay in public? I don't aspire to be a partner.

Accrual accounting course for small business owner?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 05:09 PM PST

    Hello all!

I am a young resident of Michigan who owns a small rental business in the same state. I am also about to graduate with a supply chain degree from a nearby university and despite the decent accounting component of that degree I am no where even close to being able to start the books from scratch for my small business.

What I would like to be able to do is open up an excel sheet or google docs and correctly structure a bookkeeping system for my business from scratch using the accrual method.

I understand that there is software like quickbooks available to suplament this process but given my plans for the business and the fact that it currently does make purchases on credit, i would like to start fresh before graduating to a purchasable software.

Can anyone recommend a video, course or book for a person in my situation?
