    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 10:50 PM PST

To all the start-up owners, entrepreneurs, and big thinkers:

Tell me about your start-up: what you offer in terms of product/services, how you plan to make a difference in the market/world, and if you could describe a personality for the company.

Would love to work with a number of you (or all of you) because I think we can both walk awy with something we need for further development. Can't wait to hear all about your ideas in the comments! Feel free to PM as well!

How to get rid of an annoying customer?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 07:21 AM PST

I've owned a kid's toy shop for 5 years, and there's this one "customer" who's been coming in every two weeks since we've been open. And I put "customer" in quotations because she's literally only spent $10 over the 5 years.

Most of the time, she doesn't buy anything. At first, we thought she was shoplifting, so I had employees keep a close eye on her. And while I still watch her when she comes in, she doesn't seem to be stealing things.

Usually, I don't care when people come in and leave without buying anything. But it's started to become a problem where this lady will bother the other customers while she's in my store. She'll go up to them and start talking their ear off and telling them where they can buy things cheaper (thinking she's being helpful). If I'm trying to sell something to a customer, she interrupts with her 2 cents.

The other day, a group of ladies were doing a "mommy & me" art project with their kids in our classroom area. There's no way to close off the classroom from the store, so it's not unusual for customers to poke their head in while a class is going on. There's never been an issue before, as most customers are very respectful and non-disruptive.

The annoying lady went into the classroom (again, not unusual for customers to go in while a class is happening), and apparently bugged the crap out of the ladies. Some of my regulars approached me after their class and asked me who that woman was because she wouldn't stop talking while they were trying to concentrate.

That's when I realized that I really can't have this lady coming in anymore. My regulars know me well enough to be honest with me, so it made me wonder how many newer customers have been peeved off by this lady and never said anything.

I'm hesitant to "fire" her because she's involved with a large social network of moms in my town. I don't want her telling the other moms that I told her to leave and never come back for no reason.

How do you get rid of someone like this? She hasn't done anything outwardly wrong like shoplifting. I think she's just lonely, a little nosy, and likes feeling helpful. But I'm tired of her bugging my customers and telling them to go buy things somewhere else.

TL;DR - Annoying lady who doesn't buy anything is bugging my customers, and I need to get rid of her without being seen as "mean".

    1800 or local number

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 06:23 PM PST

Does a 1800 number add more credibility? We are in NC & we have a roof & exterior surface cleaning company, we are planning on going to FL for a few months- our employee brought up that we should get a 1800 number. Does a 1800 truly benefit a small business or is it overlooked?

    Small Business Software

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 06:13 PM PST

My husband is a semi-pro photographer, his stuff has been selling which he never intended. He is now starting a business. My question is what are some good options for business software? Mostly receipts, tracking income and expenses? I think mostly basic things like that as it is photography and pretty straightforward.

Secondly, creating a website for photography... any recommendations or tips?

    Thanks!

How do you gain more traction to new business?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 02:22 PM PST

To break it down and give a little back story first, I'm 20 years old and I was questioning where my life is going, so I wanted to start a new chapter around the same time my parents moved backed to Vegas and I decided to stay here in California . I first saved up as much as I could ( always had bad spending habits, but not until things got more serious about my parents moving) dropped out of college (didn't go back after summer) quit my old job witch paid $18 hr wage. (Cell phone repair technician) (also couldn't stand my old boss as he got too comfortable paying me 4 days later after "payday") and I had about 10 k saved up with 4 k in my checking account. My credit score was also good since I have taken care of it since day 1, so I was able to get a deal on my small shop. I have about 3 weeks open, it's a small cell phone repair shop. and I do get customers here and there but it's not constant. I know it's not that much since I been open but I am stressing cause I have rent coming up (dec 1st). How do I gain more traction? I've got no money really to buy more signs or for advertisement or anything like that for now, I'm currently doing google, yelp, instagram, nextdoor app, I don't want to get a loan nor ask my parents for money (they live in Vegas and they have their own financial worries) My biggest fear is I feel like if I go down I would bring them down with me. But I'm staying positive and not thinking like that. And staying away from asking them for a single penny. Anything helps, I hope I can get some great advice on here.

Is it possible to claim start up costs for a not currently existing business?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 09:20 AM PST

I want to start a design business in the next few years. I have ideas that I think might be successful within a niche market. However, I am in the process of building initial designs. I don't have a design background so this requires that I pay for classes and experiment with various tools and services. Since I don't plan to have any customers for the next two years, can I say that I have a business and can I claim start up costs?

How do you calculate your value to a business?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 08:37 AM PST

Just got a raise, which is awesome. Think I may have left money on the table though, and want to learn for next time the conversation happens. What are some ways you've found useful in determining your value and negotiating your salary?

I'm just a single guy looking to get in touch with a food manufacture. Just to get a GLIMPSE of what a Minimum order might be for a start-up vegan food brand of chips. I emailed on Thursday, didn't hear back so I'm going to give it a few days.I just simple asked if they have a MOQ and if they work with small beginner operations. Am I doing this wrong?

Wanting to start a business, but need to choose between the two.

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 06:56 AM PST

    Hi all,

I am set to graduate in May and have been really grinding to find a business that I would enjoy and profit it from. I came up with two different ventures, and here asking which out of the two would be better.

I live in a college town and I feel like I can get a decent turnout either way.

    1. VR-Arcade, mainly consisting of stations where people may play different types of games. I would make sure to rotate games and keep finding new ways to bring back old customers. There is none in my area and closest one is over an hour away.

    2. PC Repair/Build shop, this one is a bit more saturated. There is roughly 4 or 5 shops in the area and they offer more services like web hosting, business managment, etc. I have prior knowledge in both and I know a few people who will help me out. I will also look into mobile repairs as well.

    Any guidance will help

    Thanks in advance.

Need help with an idea: reducing margin on item for special volume sales program

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 06:01 AM PST

Let me start by saying that I know the old joke about selling under cost and making it up with volume. LOL! I'm not thinking of doing that. Here is what my idea is:

I sell greyhound muzzles imported from Ireland and they're very popular in the USA. They're my best sellers simply by virtue of word of mouth marketing. The importing actually works in my favor on these (surprisingly) as I am selling them well at a 73% margin.

I sell primarily to owners of retired racing greyhounds. The Florida state legislature just passed a law that - without going into details, see the greyhound subreddit for that - is going to result in an estimated 8,000 dogs being quickly dumped on the rescue/adoption organizations over the next two years. The rescue/adoption groups are scrambling to find volunteers, donations and adopters. I am going to participate in all of that since I'm a greyhound owner too, and active with the "community". My business idea is to offer the muzzles to the rescue/adoption groups in bulk orders (say 10 or more) at only a 36% margin.

Okay, so I know of these risks:

    • The program could cut into my individual muzzle sales

    • Shipping could eat the margin, especially if I offer free shipping

Any other risks or reasons why I should not do this?

UK Specific - Registering for VAT before reaching threshold?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 04:55 AM PST

So, I have found myself in a position where I feel it would be advantagous to be VAT registered, but I am nowhere near the threshold where you must regiser for VAT.

I recently started a Limited Company, to resell imported goods (not going into too much detail as it doesn't effect the question) These goods have been selling pretty well through eBay so far, opened doors 3 months ago and generated £7k revenue so far. Not much but a start.

I want to register for VAT so I can sell direct to businesses.

I know I can sell these to bussineses because A. They already buy from me through ebay. (this means I also have a small database of customers I can market to) and B. 50% Of my day job is B2B sales, so no worries there.

I feel I'd come across better selling to these businesses if I was VAT Registered, so I can provide VAT invoices and come across like I never just started this copmany 3 months ago. But the threshold to register for VAT is £80K, and I am nowhere near that and from what I've read there are downsides to doing so before reaching the threshold.

I am looking for advice from someone who knows more than me basically, any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks

How do you survive when burning cash?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 09:31 AM PST

Time and money — two things we always seem to find ourselves short of. In the competitive arena of business, a company can be made or broken by how effectively it uses its resources. Having a poor cash flow can signal the impending death of a company, and not preparing how to deal with it means certain failure. But how do you survive when you're burning cash?
