Confirmed -- Home burned in Paradise Camp fire

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 06:36 AM PST

I got confirmation last night that there is nothing left except the chimney.

Any advice on how to proceed with insurance etc (would be greatly appreciated). My wife (27f) and I (27m) are lost and don't know what to do. Or where to start. I have started a claim with my insurance company.

Part of me wants to just walk away. Will insurance pay off the loan?

    (Sorry for typos)

What coverage do I need or need to see that my contractor needs to have that is mounting a TV in my personal dwelling that I rent in order to insure the possibility of him breaking the TV or mount in the process or doing structural damage?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 12:12 AM PST

I have a TV I want mounted, and I have a contractor saying he has GL coverage, but from what I understood GL does not cover me, rather it covers him from claims that arise from me. So, does that mean if he busts my TV I will assume the loss without coverage, or would his coverage apply to my property since it would be on his "job site" since he's a personal contractor doing work at my dwelling?

Any advice on what coverage I should be looking to get would be great. I have renters insurance, but I was under the assumption that that only applied to theft and the general liability's of a DP like fire, wind, explosion — not damage to the covered property caused by others in a non-burglary situation.

Any clarification would be great as I'm actually a licensed L&H agent (not working as one) and would like to get into P&C as well but am just starting to delve into it.

Car Accident - Making a legal u-turn and the car behind me hits me

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 05:06 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I already made a post in /r/legaladvice and it was suggested that I post here. I want to get some opinions on a car accident I had in NY. Basically, I was stopping in the far left lane to make a u-turn once the light turns green (completely legal to do a u-turn there). I double checked that there were no cars coming from the other direction. As I am turning, a car behind me came in so fast and bypassed me from the left in a way that their rear end hit the front of my car while I was making my turn. Police came to the scene and talked to us and made the report. I asked the police officer who is at fault and he said that they don't determine that and it's up to the insurance company. Can anyone shed light on who's likely to be at fault?

https://imgur.com/KmDk5Xo my car is blue line, his is red. The circle shows how the rear end of his car crashed into the front of mine.

    Thank you so much!

    Car Insurance Question

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 09:17 PM PST

Hello, first time getting car insurance and I think I might have gotten too much/overinsured if that's a thing. Wondering if I can possibly get confirmation on that and what I should drop, or if it did it right? Bit of info, I'm a 25yo M who has been driving since Apr of this year so new driver. I currently have a 2010 Toyota Corolla S fully paid off (worth about 3.7-4k on KBB). I live in Texas, total amount I'm paying is 278 a month (or 1637.63 for 6 months). Insurance is through USAA. Current coverage: Underinsured/Uninsured for 25k Comprehensive coverage Collision coverage Car replacement assistance 30/60k liability 25k property damage liability 30/60k Uninsured/Underinsured bodily injury 2.5k personal injury protection

Let me know if I did this correctly or if I got too much and what I shouldn't have, thanks!

Car stolen and recovered - Illegal to drive now

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 07:03 PM PST

    Good evening all,

On Thursday my wife was at the park with our kids. 2 people came up and one of them punched our 9 yea-old daughter in the face to distract my wife while the other stole her keys. The car was just found tonight (and one person arrested) on the opposite side of town. The deputy said the car is sound and operating normally but the windshield was busted so badly that it's unsafe to drive. I've input a claim with my insurance (State Farm, full comprehensive) so things seem to be in order.

My questions is this: Can my insurance hire a tow to get the vehicle out of storage before we rack up tons of storage fees?

    Home Warranty and furnace inspection

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 06:50 PM PST

    Hello,

I have a home warranty from "Fidelity". The warranty covers appliance breakages.

I have a furnace that is pretty old and I would like to have checked because when it starts emits a faint gas smell.

I'm not an expert and I don't know if that is normal or not. I would like to use the coverage to do it. It has a $75 dollars service fee. Would the insurance cover such a claim or is it only for "it doesn't work" situations?

PG&E (my gas company) also does inspections for appliances for free, but the next available date is Dec 3, which is a little too late! (Its starting to get cold and I'll need my furnace soon)

Someone backed into my car. Despite honking, old man damaged my front bumper. Insurance wants me to pay $500 deductible. Should I just deal with it?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 06:07 PM PST

I got the other guy's insurance information. Bumper was chipped, so I can't just buff it out if there's nothing to buff. I could get it fixed, but it's $500, just as much as the deductible. My parents are offering to pay, but it was my fault for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Plus, I was planning on getting the bumped fixed because of the road rash under it. However, I was planning on fixing the bumper years from now because I couldn't afford it and it was hidden. Now, the chipped paint is an eye sore.

I have Geico and he had Allstate. My second option was to go to Allstate and file a complaint. Would that affect my current insurance?

Prometric Violation - Ripped Paper -CPCU

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 03:28 PM PST

Hey all. I took the CPCU 500 and I passed! Which was awesome but with a caveat.

I wish I was making this up but I handed in my scratch paper and they said they would have to report me because I ripped my scratch paper in half in the exam room (which yes, I did). They know I did not cheat but they still had to report it. I know they record everything so they will see that I ripped the paper during the exam but not sure what that means in the end.

My results along with the note about the ripped scratch paper in half is being sent to the institutes. I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone before and if so, what the results were? Any advice?

I just hope I do not have to retake the exam.

    Question about life insurance

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 11:47 AM PST

I hope I'm posting in the right place. Please forgive any format abnormalities. If this question is better asked elsewhere, please point me in the right direction.

A friend recently lost his mother. He's an only child. He was the insured in a life insurance policy that she owned. His mother was also the beneficiary of the policy. He wants to change the policy so that he will be the owner. His intention is to be able to receive some type of payout, but is this possible? And if so, what should he do?

I'm trying to help him, but I don't know very much about life insurance and neither does he. I'll appreciate any help anyone might be able to offer.

Seepage and leakage from kitchen drain pipe

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 07:25 AM PST

We recently had a leak in our basement, as soon as we saw the leak we notified our insurance broker. We could not tell where the leak was coming from because it was coming from behind the wall. The bottom baseboard felt wet and was brown. I had been in the room a week prior and not noticed anything.

Our insurance broker told us to call a local company to decide where the leak was coming from. The company came over and determined that it was not coming from the foundation and it was not coming from the dishwasher. They determined that it was coming from the our kitchen drain pipe or kitchen sink. They company and the insurance broker reassured us that everything should be covered under our policy because it was not coming from the foundation, or the dishwasher. They had reassured me at the time that it should be covered if the pipe was broken.

They started to investigate the leak, they ripped out 8 feet high by 6 feet wide dry wall. They removed the vapour barrier and insulation because of the mold that grew. They determined the leak came from the PVC pipe under the kitchen sink. It had a large crack in it. My insurance broker had told me after they found the leak. It was the pvc pipe under the kitchen sink.

After the insurance adjuster came by and asked about the leak and we repeated our story. They sent the information to Aviva and they decided that after they saw the pictures and got the story that it was not going to be covered because of seepage and leakage. They said that it must have been going on for a period of time and it did not happen all at once.

My insurance broker and the local company never told me that my claim could be denied for seepage or leakage. It is written in my policy and I should of double checked it but, If I would of know I would of cut the drywall out and removed the mold myself. I was reassured by both parties that it should be covered.

Is there anything that I can do? Should my insurance broker or the local company know that seepage and leakage are not covered in my current policy? When they called to explain why they were surprised that seepage and leakage were not covered. I believe the insurance broker should have some previous knowledge about the policy. Especially when it comes to claims like this. I believe that they would of been involved in cases similar to this in the past. Should I argue the costs or can I fight this in any way. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Car Insurer unilaterally extended coverage past policy expiration date. Demanded payment and threatened to send to collections. Legal?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 10:01 AM PST

Car insurer A has almost doubled rates over 5+ years despite zero claims, zero tickets, etc. They said this was due to inflation and covering uninsured motorists. Bought insurance with Car insurer B beginning day prior to Policy A's lapse. Car insurer A unilaterally extended my policy, demanded payment on "the balance" and threatened to send to collections. I told them to pound sand, the policy was paid in full. They said I needed to send them the dec page from Policy B. I told them to stop contacting me and that I would report them to my state's insurance oversight board. Is what they did legal and appropriate?

    Grange Roadside Insurance

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 03:31 AM PST

Hi for people with Grange Roadside assistance insurance, is it normal that you pay for services up front? And then submit for reimbursement? What good is it then to have coverage?
