    Sitting on cash?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 10:59 PM PST

I don't trust the market right now. Is there a better way than sitting on cash? I don't want to invest in real estate because there's a bubble.

GE - been holding since 2009

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 07:12 AM PST

So, I bought around 1,000 shares of GE back in early 2009 for about 10 dollars a share and up until 2016, I thought I did ok for myself. I was collecting a nice dividend and had a huge gain, but now I don't know what to do. With no dividend and the idea this thing could actually go to zero is freaking me out. Is there any chance of it going back up, do I sell and just move on? Thankfully, this was only 10% of what I invested back in 2009. I put the rest in other much better companies that are still growing.

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 04:04 AM PST

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Help me understand why gold, but not diamond.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 03:08 AM PST

As a country' currency get stronger, the price of gold drop. And vise versa, as the country's currency get weaker, the price of gold increase. USD used to be based on gold. It's no longer.

    • What is so special about gold and silver over other material such as diamond that there is this consistently strong correlation to money?

    • What is so special about gold and silver over other material such as diamond that there is this consistently strong correlation to crypto currency?

    • Doesn't diamond pack much more value per cubic inch/cm compare to gold and silver?

    Thanks.

Chinese stocks - what are the counterparty risks?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 12:12 PM PST

I am willing to hedge that China generally could amount to a significant growth opportunity over the coming decades, but unlike the US (which has a lot of regulation behind legal ownership of equities - I am fairly familiar with the chain of custody/ownership) I have little to no understanding of how Chinese stocks are stored and associated to "owners".

I have read comments in various places which indicate there may be significant counterparty risks to owning Chinese stocks (mostly related to the state controls). Can anyone here with expertise give summary of what those risks might be? I would also be interested in any additional counterparty risks related to holding Chinese-based ETFs (for example, CQQQ).

Masterworks: Buy shares of multi-million dollar fine art for small amounts of money

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 05:42 PM PST

Interesting premise for this company. They act like active investors and identify potentially undervalued works of fine art, buy them and then sell shares to the public in these works. They claim that since 2000, fine art has increased in value more than the S&P 500.

I'm a diehard indexer, but thought this is remarkable enough to share. https://www.masterworks.io/about/how-it-works

Rising interest rates are a catch 22 for stocks

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 03:19 PM PST

As the fed continues its steady rise of interest rate hikes, US treasuries have are becoming a more attractive alternative to other investments. Real estate, stocks, and other long dated bond prices are all negatively affected as interest rates rise. As treasuries are considered to be one of the safest investments, someone looking to simply keep up with inflation now has a choice to invest in short date treasuries rather than deal with the risk of stocks or longer dated bonds. This sort of equation is happening across the spectrum of high and low risk investments.

The fed rate has risen from 0-0.25% to 2-2.25%. Mortgage rates have risen from there low of 3.5% to over 5%. Long dated treasury ETFs like $VUSUX have fallen 20% from their 2015 highs. Corporate bonds have fared a little better but are not far behind. Real estate prices and stock ETFs like $VT have not yet suffered, but are at risk as interest rates continue to rise.

Unfortunately for asset prices, the federal reserve will continue to raise interest rates as long as economic indicators like growth and unemployment rates continue to be strong. This creates a damned if you do damned if you don't situation for stocks. Either economic data takes a turn and stocks asset prices suffer or economic data stays strong, the fed raises interest rates and asset prices suffer. When stock prices take a turn is anyone's guess, but luckily you can be paid to wait by investing in short dated bonds.

    Legal Marijuana

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 11:12 AM PST

Let's discuss legal and efficient entries to the legal cannabis sector and it's cottage industries. With current political affairs, fullscale legalization is unlikely, but Canadian and Latin American policy is setting a precedent for explosive growth in private marijuana stocks if the US or Western Europe were to legalize. I don't care for marijuana personally, but I figure adults will do what they choose with their lungs and life. What are your thoughts?

    Tax implications

    Posted: 10 Nov 2018 10:36 AM PST

If this is the wrong place for this question, please let me know and I'll delete it.

I have an old 401(k) that I might need to cash out to provide for moving expenses I have early next year. I know about the taxable income in doing so as well as the 10% early withdrawal penalty. My question is, does the IRS allow me to write off these expenses thereby reducing the taxable amount or avoid paying the taxes altogether? Thank you for your help in this matter.

They are trying to avoid bankruptcy at all costs and prepping for it. 2nd GM is working on a special reveal for a major electric vehicle soon 3rd Harley Davidson is following suit and will be releasing an electric motorcycle. Ohh and for legal sakes, this is all hypothetical and I do not know shit, investments are a risk... blah blah blah
