the voting system & post quality - r/stocks

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:03 AM PST

I see complaints for low quality posts on r/stocks all the time, but the problem is how users vote here on r/stocks.

The voting system is used to upvote posts & comments that contribute to r/stocks. However a lot of users downvote because they disagree with the title or OP.

For example Please convince me that 2019 DJIA will be up 20% or more gets downvoted (0 points, 25% upvoted, 1.4k views), which is unfortunate because OP put in a decent amount of effort. The comment replies were pretty good, it's a good read overall (post & comments).

While a relatively low quality post received 129 points Dividend people!!! The mods missed out on removing it before a flood of comments came in. Sometimes we won't remove low quality posts because users already put in effort into their comments.

But the point here is that the 2nd OP didn't put in effort and it got upvoted triple digits, while the 1st OP did put in effort and his post got 0 points.

    from Reddit's own reddiquette page:

    • Vote. If you think something contributes to conversation, upvote it. If you think it does not contribute to the subreddit it is posted in or is off-topic in a particular community, downvote it.

    • {don't} Downvote an otherwise acceptable post because you don't personally like it. Think before you downvote and take a moment to ensure you're downvoting someone because they are not contributing to the community dialogue or discussion. If you simply take a moment to stop, think and examine your reasons for downvoting, rather than doing so out of an emotional reaction, you will ensure that your downvotes are given for good reasons.

    • {don't} Mass downvote someone else's posts. If it really is the content you have a problem with (as opposed to the person), by all means vote it down when you come upon it. But don't go out of your way to seek out an enemy's posts.

    • {don't} Moderate a story based on your opinion of its source. Quality of content is more important than who created it.

    • {don't} Upvote or downvote based just on the person that posted it. Don't upvote or downvote comments and posts just because the poster's username is familiar to you. Make your vote based on the content.

    • {don't} Report posts just because you do not like them. You should only be using the report button if the post breaks the subreddit rules.

tl;dr Upvote posts that add value to r/stocks even if you disagree with OP, downvote posts that don't add value even if you agree w/ OP, or else you're just gonna get a bunch of low quality posts. If you don't want to see a post, just click/tap hide.

    r/Stocks Options Trading Tuesday - Nov 06, 2018

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 03:32 AM PST

These stock options discussions run every Thursday.

Feel free to talk about options you have or ask questions on options. But before you ask any question make sure you see the following links:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell
    • If you're asking about basic terminology, see Tastytrade glossary, then feel free to ask a more in depth question afterwards, basic terms:
      • exercising an option - when you use your call option to buy 100 shares or put option to sell a 100 shares
      • strike price - The price at which stock is purchased or sold when an option is exercised
      • ITM - when a call option's strike price is below the stock price, or put's strike price is above the stock price
      • OTM - when a call option's strike price is above the stock price, or put's strike price is below the stock price
      • ATM - when the option's strike price is at or very near the stock price
      • long options - buying options
      • short options - selling (or writing) options
      • combo or option strategy - buying and/or selling multiple options
      • debit - what you're paying to buy an option or combo
      • credit or premium - what you're receiving (money) to sell an option or combo
      • covered call - when you buy stock and then sell calls
      • naked - when you sell calls or puts without owning stock or other options for the same stock
    • Wondering what those option strategies are: OptionsPlaybook, common combos:
      • Debit call spread (vertical debit spread) - generally a bullish combo that involves buying a call and selling a call at a lower strike; the cost of buying the spread combo is lower than just buying a call, however this reduces your max profit, but also reduces your max loss
      • Credit call spread (vertical credit spread) - generally a bearish combo that involves selling a call and buying a call at a lower strike; this reduces your max loss compared to just selling naked, but it also reduces your max profit (credit received)
      • Strangle - Two naked options, a call and a put, this creates a neutral combo and you profit as price stays between the two strike prices
      • Iron condor - same as the strangle except with protection, reduced profit but also reducing your max loss
    • A thorough explanation of nearly every option strategy explained by TastyTrade here
    • Book recommendations by the options community at r/options (subscribe while you're at it)

If you have a basic question, for example "what is Theta," then google "investopedia theta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Why do video gaming stocks tend to fall around Christmas?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 05:44 AM PST

Looking at Nintendo and Sony's 5-year histories, it seems their prices fall in December almost without fail and then pick back up in January. This seems backwards to me since so many gaming purchases are made for Christmas. But am i mistaking purchases for investor confidence, and why don't those two correlate more closely?

    Thanks. First time posting here.

    This Point in History

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 06:17 AM PST

Hello everyone. The mods and I have recently been discussing and going over a few ideas to increase discussion and make our subreddit a little more interesting. Some of you may have seen our recent additions to discussion threads and their topics. Something else we are now adding to our subreddit are occasional posts regarding historic or interesting events involving the stock market, investing, or the economy. I won't be doing these super often, mostly due to time constraints and because of the limitations of finding events that we feel are noteworthy enough. I also had a little bit of trouble coming up with a good name for these posts. For now, I'll be calling them "This Point in History" but if anyone has a better or catchier name, I'm all ears. I would also like to give a moment to give credit to the handful of history websites out there that helped with finding these topics.

The goal of these posts is to generate some discussion and educate readers about events that we feel were important and historic in nature. My idea is to present a topic/event, provide a brief description of it, and then turn the discussion to you guys. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts for upcoming events they would like to be discussed, again feel free to comment or message me as I'm all ears. So, without further ado, let's go back to early November in the year 1907.

The US was a few weeks into an event which would later be called "The Great Panic 1907" in which investor confidence sank deeply in the US banking system, economy, and stock market. The average American was skeptical on all fronts and a huge sense of distrust developed in these industries, the government, and amongst major businesses. Various stretches of "bank runs" occurred where people ran to withdraw their money from their local banks in fear of losing it or seeing its value further plummet. Americans called for stricter and tighter regulations on these banks and companies as stock manipulations schemes appeared more frequent than many initially thought. The New York Stock Exchange had fallen over 50% from its all-time highs in 1906. The third largest trust in the US, The Knickerbocker Trust, would fall by late October. Most of this stuff occurred in early fall but by early November things were looking particularly dire for the US.

Seventy old banker John Pierpont Morgan (better known today as JP Morgan and for his company) stepped up to the plate to restore consumer confidence in early November 1907 by issuing money and cutting deals, both things aiding in the liquidity crisis that struck the US. Morgan was joined by other groups and wealthy individuals such John D. Rockefeller to find a way out of this crisis. If not for people like Morgan, Rockefeller, and others then things could have potentially turned much worse. To help prevent such future events, the Federal Reserve would be established only a few years later in 1913 and regulations were somewhat tighter than what they were less than a decade ago.

Just over a hundred years later the world would face the Great Financial Crisis and while it appeared that we had learned from some of our mistakes of 1907, it was evident the system we had in place was far from perfect. Weak banking regulations are probably one of the first things that come to mind when comparing both events. While not quite the same, both events were fixed in part with the help of bailouts. Is the US in better shape today to prevent another event like 2008 or 1907 or is history doomed to repeat itself under a slightly different manner? What ways or actions can we take to prevent events like these occurring?

Had over 60 % of my portfolio allocated to amazon. I sold it a few weeks back. Here is what I did with the capital

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 10:42 AM PST

I was trying to find undervalued stocks that were beginning to break out. A combination of morningstar, tradingview, ichimoku, and stochastic rsi got it done last night/during my business law class this morning. I sold my amazon because my portfolio is not large enough to holster the amount I was. I may considering re-entering if we dip to ~1400 To the meat and potatoes-

    New holdings:

    SNAP- 2.1%

    MSFT- 15.62%

    MCHP- 14.5%

    LB- 10.64%

    EPD- 8.4%

    And old holdings:

    DIS- 21.69%

    SCHM- 27.95%

The beta on my portfolio is .79 currently and 28% of my portfolio is cash. Being a 20 year old, id like to implement my tolerance to risk. If anyone has some small cap suggestions send them my way!

Side note: About 8 hours of research went into this so far... when is enough research enough to know you picked the right ones?

Advice on how to invest in the stock market as a college student

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 10:05 AM PST

Hello everyone. I have 3400 hundred in my new account. I have currently invested in Amazon stock 75% of my money. There other 25% is invested in Exxon. I am looking to generate a 7-10% increase in interest over the next year. By the buying low and selling high process. I understand I need to do more of my own research, but I would love to hear what yall have been doing. What has shown growth and proved profitable for everyone? What breakdown of stocks/bonds has shown favorable? Funds? Would appreciate any advice.

I am currently in college and looking to create a rainy day fund for myself. New to this process.

ENB: Enbridge Inc. Ending DRIP plan, is this positive or negative?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 01:07 PM PST

    https://www.enbridge.com/investment-center/stock-and-dividend-information/dividend-reinvestment-and-share-purchase-plans

Is this positive or negative for the investor? I know that it takes away the automatic share buyback but the dividend remains. Thank you for your insight.

After reading through Apple's Q4 transcript here's what i think about the reaction by analysts

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 05:21 AM PST

The obsession over this change is a blatant attempt to cool the stock off and lower the price of a company that is executing at the highest level and will probably replace FANG as the stock that can cover up a shitty portfolio with its gains. The report was very clear. Apple has built a business that has so much going for it now and focusing on how many new phones they sold is missing the point. I think they knew eventually the smart phone market was going to cool honestly because they have perfected it to the point that upgrading is not really as necessary as it used to be. I have the Iphone XS and it can do pretty much everything you could possibly want it to. Its fast, its well designed, it's durable, the camera is awesome, face id is seamless, the apps can literally recognize things that they need to do before you even think of doing it yourself. It's just....hard to really imagine needing something better, Thats why their customers will pay a premium to upgrade , but really it is what the customer does with the phone after that apple sees as a much bigger opportunity. The apps, the music subscription, apple pay, icloud, the camera, messaging, streaming, you name it. all of that can be monetized and it is not as cyclical and iphone sales so theyd be stupid not to make that part of their business the focus. people use the phone everyday, they will only shop for the phone what once every two years? Why is that 1 transaction so much more important than the other 600 days the user spends on the device. It's like judging the profitability of facebook by how many people downloaded the app on a particular day. Anyone that thinks the iphone slowing has anything to do with the actual profitability of the company is clueless and cook even said if the unit number was significant in some way he would mention it so it's not about transparency really. I think it was just something to nitpick at and distract from the fact that services, the watch, the laptop, music, pay and everything else was so strong that it can carry the business. The guidance really wasnt that bad either. They are expecting to hit new record profits and continue to introduce a bunch of new products to their customers. Thought they killed it but the stock is selling off like they did something wrong. I'd be a buyer here for sure. The analyst community knows it was a great quarter and they saw a chance to get it for cheap. Cook I guess could have been an ass like Musk and told them to stop asking dumb questions but he actually answered questions about it multiple times. He argued that if 1 unit generates more revenue than 100 used to why does it matter? It has always been a number used by the analysts to burry the company and that is probably something Cook just doesnt want to deal with anymore. Who cares? The company will buyback the panic any way and beat estimates again so why are people selling the stock based on one very small part of the report? The downgrades yesterday were really suspect i sure there are a few more to come but you guys should read the report. It was pretty good.

How to get 3 line VWAP on trading view?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 09:08 AM PST

Didn't know what subreddit to post this in SORRY!

Love him or hate him, I see Ricky from techbud solutions use the three line VWAP pretty well. I can't find a suitable one on trading view. Right now I'm using the STDEV bands but the middle VWAP doesn't seem reliable...am I mistaken? Its seems very choppy. Thank you in advance.

    What Happens?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 05:35 AM PST

This may be a very "Basic" question. However, I have gotten many different angles and answers. What exactly happens when a stock starts to plummit and "disappears" from the stock exchange. I had a very small amount into GSTCQ and it seems they have gone belly up or something tragic of that nature. Does this mean my stocks are dead in the water or can I still sell them off? What happens if they don't sell? do they just sit in my account or do they go off into dead space? What happens if they changed their name on the market? Do my stocks go with it or do I have to sell and buy the new name? I am not sure if I am asking all of this correctly. I guess I have a few misconceptions as to how it all works. I guess this is the "gambling" aspect of the stock game. Thanks everyone. I continue learning. I am having fun so far.

Lazy, "Follow the smart money" stock picking?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 04:34 PM PST

What if I were to just go to dataroma.com or some other website showing top hedge fund portfolios, pick like ~6-8 of the most owned stocks in different sectors for some diversification. Maybe some further down the list for higher risk/reward and/or use a small amount to purchase small undiscovered stocks of my own picking some with growth potential. Forget about it for a year or more, then recheck-rebalance-reposition as needed. Rinse and repeat. I realize you would always be too late to the party to reap the greater returns that the big institutions and hedge funds are privy to, but would there be any potential merit to this strategy? Are there any good resources out there to read up on this sorta thing?

    Thoughts on hydrogen?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 04:00 AM PST

What does people think of hydrogen stocks such as NEL and Nikola? Tons of projects in the pipeline and NEL is projected to obtain different contracts within the next 12 months. IS hydrogen stocks a waste of money or is there money to be made?

Personally, I would choose either Apple, Microsoft, or GE (pre-nosedive, of course). What's yours?

    VSLR Earnings Report Tuesday 11/5/2018

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 08:32 PM PST

Tomorrow, VSLR is expected to report an earnings of -.22 per share. Does this mean the stock price will go down? Or because it is an increase of the previous year will the share price rise?

Thoughts? Should I buy more? Sell off while I am making a profit?
