How an ex-lawyer built Halo Top into an ice cream sensation with $347 million in sales

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 10:46 AM PST

In 2011, Woolverton was a lawyer, working in the litigation department of Latham & Watkins in Los Angeles. To satisfy his sweet tooth, he wanted to concoct something that tasted like ice cream but was healthier and had less sugar. So he mixed together some Greek yogurt, fresh berries and Stevia (a natural sweetener).

He liked his creation so much that he eventually bought an ice cream maker (on sale on Amazon for $20). As Woolverton made his recipes in the ice cream machine, he had a eureka moment. He thought, "Wait, if I like it, maybe a lot of other people will like it. We should bring it to market."

There are so many entrepreneurs that get stuck with one idea or something they commit their lives to only to end up with the most average life.
What are some things you can start doing that guarantee success if you commit hard enough?

Feedback: Would you pay $20/Month to Never Go to a Gas Station Again?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:27 PM PST

So heres the idea. You live in a city where we are located, you send a quick text and we come and put gas in your gas tank. This service is $20/month per vehicle.

Say your at work and you're supposed to get off in a couple hours and you have a lot to do after work and getting gas will cause you to be late.

Say your going to a concert and you couldnt get off work so you have to leave ASAP and every minute will count to be there on time. But then you forget you will have to stop for gas because you're on E.

You're at home and don't want to stop for gas in the morning because it will be snowing and way to cold and uncomfortable to fill up.

You're low on gas and your on the side of the road and you dont have roadside assistance, we will bring you gas and fill you up.

Simply send us a quick text and your current location and we will be out ASAP and place the gas in your tank, with no limits all for only $21.99/Month. (You pay for the gas of course)

Would you sign up? Why or why not? Is this service valuable to you? If not then who?

    Thanks for your time everyone!

    Let me know your thoughts!

New Idea for Men's Dress Socks

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:47 PM PST

Hello everybody - long time lurker here.

I wanted to get some feedback on a business idea I have had for a while, and am looking to start. For years now I have had a problem with buying typical men's dress socks. Everything is based on the shoe size, and unfortunately not the actual curvature of the leg. My legs are (apparently) larger than most, and every time I purchase dress socks the socks will cut off the circulation to my leg and, frankly, it hurts like hell sometimes. The only products that come remotely closet to helping are the "honeycomb" style socks. But even those barely help.

Does anybody else have this problem? I'm looking into make men's socks that actually are formed to fit comfortably the entire area the sock covers.

I can't be the only person that has this problem. Please let me know if you have any feedback or comments.

    Thanks - newsockguy

When virtually every "guru" on youtube says "THIS IS WHAT THE GURUS WON'T TELL YOU", it kinda loses the point

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:09 PM PST

I don't think I've come across a single teacher/guru on youtube that doesn't use the "throw shit at all the gurus" as one of their marketing strategy. When every single channel you come across says "THIS IS WHAT THE GURUS WON'T TELL YOU" or "COMPARED TO ALL THE OTHER FAKE GURUS OUT THERE, I CUT THROUGH THE BULLSHIT AND TELL YOU THE TRUTH" you kinda start to wonder who actually is a guru, and who isnt. Trust issues . . . .

Who is the target market for $10,000 + mineral specimens?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 06:42 PM PST

I am an avid lover of rocks and minerals. I like my collection but as I want to grow what I have, I see variations of stones that go for exorbitant amounts of money that I certainly can not afford. My question is, who is buying $50,000 mineral specimens to decorate their house with?

25, out of college, getting a start up rolling.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 01:08 PM PST

Like the title says, 25 and out of college. Got good grades and a great degree, but I decided I wanted to pave my own path.

I am currently starting a company and am funding it 100% on my own. My only predicament is that I still live with my parents and am unemployed because I am dedicating my time to this. My parents often push me to get a typical job. That goes pretty far against my life goals to just settle and do that.

I currently have available ~175k liquidated to my name and am using that to get things rolling with my startup. I have considered moving out but am trying to save so I can have an extra cushion if need be.

Also, the company hasn't launched yet. Currently in the process of prepping for launch though.

To those who started a company or had a similar path, how would you handle a situation like this? Does it sound like I'm handling things wrong? Should I just get a regular job and balance both? Or be available and dedicate my time to my startup as I'm doing? I feel like I'm doing something wrong whenever I have almost any communication with my parents, but aside from that, what I'm doing feels right (aside from living with my parents at 25).

Getting selected/rejected for owning a franchise?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 11:43 AM PST

Hello all. I am looking to buy a franchise - I've been analyzing several and narrowing them down to a couple I'm really interested in. I'm curious to hear from people who have attempted, successfully or unsuccessfully to obtain a franchise. My worry is that I was out of the workforce for a long time, my only work experience is retail and office work, I have no managerial or business background. I'm worried that they will just outright reject me as a franchise owner because of that lack of experience, regardless of my capabilities. Pretty much my only selling point that's verifiable is the money in my bank account.

What have been some of your experiences with trying to purchase a new franchise?

How did you find like minded entrepreneurial people like youself to create your business.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:56 PM PST

Just putting this out there. I'm an entrepreneur who has more work ethic and creativity than money. I want to venture off into a new business but I really dont think I can do it all myself. The people around me are not entrepreneurial at all. Every idea is always met with hesitation no matter what it is. So how do you find like minded people. Where do you start ? How did you branch out if your network to find people who, if didnt have money, had skills or whatever to get something going .... and get it off the ground.

How the city shaped this founder’s vision for an ethical startup

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 06:34 AM PST

Really interesting interview here with an entrepreneur and founder who was influenced by his 20-year career in investment/finance in London. Not really the career you'd expect to lead to setting up a social enterprise!

But he now runs a startup called Giki with his wife that has produced an 'ethical shopping companion' app that makes it easier to make more environmentally friendly/ethical choices in the supermarket.

Any other entrepreneurs on here who've been influenced by surprising/unsuspect career stints?

    I need help

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 07:46 AM PST

We recently started making more than our original budget which means that we can now actually live instead of survive. We now added a new category "Entertainment" but we also are starting to save more and more now. The "Emergency" fund is growing at a steady rate along with our retirement 401K matched from our company that I work for.

The wife agreed to start letting me invest some money, we only have an extra $50-$100 a month to invest on top of our other stuff. What is the best way to invest that money for a return. I've looked at investing in stocks and I've looked at starting another business because we currently have a printing company that does t-shirts and vinyl along with our day jobs.

If you had the extra $50-$100 a month what would you invest in, what could the returns be and why would you choose that?

I posted first in r/samplesize but the questions are for entrepreneurs only and it seems there is not enough of them in there. I will share results with anyone who needs them. Thanks

How to find CTO for your startup? (funny story)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 01:57 AM PST

I'm working on my startup graphqleditor.com

It's a side project and I do part-time growth consulting.

I wanted to automate my daily work and do some scraping,

So I hired python developer on upwork,

He was very good at his task and helped me a lot,

More than expected and I liked the guy,

We worked together for 5 or 6 weeks from sept '18

I've added him on fb to improve communication,

Few days later he asked me: - Can I have off-work question?

I said yes c'mon. He replied: - Can u send a bottle of vodka (Krupnik)?

I laughed and thought: Russian people = vodka than asked: - Why?

He said: - my girlfriend's father has a surname Krupnik and I want it as a gift!

    I said: let's do it! I don't know if it's legal but let's try.

One week later the box was in transit. (pic from post office - https://ibb.co/fTx08V)

A week later I got a message on chat:

    - I do wanna talk about the work. How about work together. So free for you.

    - I think we could to make something amazing. Let's do some startup together!

I laughed, now we might be starting something together ;]

Few days later the box arrived: https://ibb.co/hPBcoV

Open Beta for Custom Twitter Bot Software

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:34 PM PST

    Hey all,

I recently created a desktop app that allows businesses to quickly create their own Twitter bots, without having to hire programmers or other expensive talent. It allows the user to automatically reply to retweets, reply to follows, and reply along hashtags to engaged users. I was wondering if anybody would be interested in testing out the software for me, reviewing it, and giving me a fair estimate of what they would consider paying monthly for it.

    Thanks everybody!

Please DM me your email if you'd like to participate.

    Understanding this company's financial report?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 06:47 AM PST

I'm being nosy and looking at my friend's company. It says:

    • Net Worth: £-177,890
    • Assets: £105.8k
    • Liabilities: £6,581

I don't understand that because I thought your net worth is your assets minus your liabilities but that simply doesn't make mathematical sense based on that example.

Pricing an intermediate product for sale

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 01:31 PM PST

Ok so I have a pricing dilemma that I'd like to see if anyone else has encountered.

My company sells a end-product that requires us to create some intermediary (let's call it INT) thing. We do not sell this intermediate but it has potentially a lot of value to the customer who buys the final product. It costs us nothing to include this INT product other than opportunity cost because it is digital and has to be created anyway. It can be used by the customer for other things than what we produce with it. How would you go about pricing it? I was thinking about pricing it based on what it would take to create the INT product alone, with some discount. Thoughts?

The 7 deadly sins of startups: Poor product

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 09:22 AM PST

There's a reason why the product is said to be the most important part of the marketing mix. In today's world of cut-throat competition, producers have no alternative but to compete for the best offering in the market. Eventually, word will spread that what you're selling isn't worth the price. So the question becomes: What are the key factors of a successful product? Check out a few case studies with the link below!

Need help troubleshooting a facebook issue (willing to pay)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:55 PM PST

I have a new business facebook page. I just tried to post a status update with 10 pictures. The status update was long and tagged other pages. After I clicked submit, the pictures posted to my page but the status update did not. For the last two hours I have tried multiple different ways to make my post go through -- sharing it as an album, posting it from my phone, combining all the images into a single collage on Canva and then sharing that picture. None of my posts have gone through. When I try to post from my phone, it says I cannot post because "[t]hese photos were already posted." It continues to give this message even after I have removed all of the photos.

I need help. I am willing to pay for someone to help me troubleshoot this and solve this problem. (If anything in this post is not permitted by this sub, please let me know and I will edit my post.)

Looking for someone(s) who are in the b2b space, that are looking to get more clients, that we can do a podcast with/on.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:52 PM PST

I do b2b lead generation for companies.

I primarily use email marketing as my tool of choice. And I'm to the point where things are going really well for me and clients, and I have (finally) a bit of free time to be creative and spend some time developing projects.

I've recently gotten more into creatively writing about my knowledge, strategies, experience, and tools. This has opened up a lot of great conversations within different business communities, BUT one issue I'm seeing is that 80% of peoples questions to me are the exact same issues!

To address this, I'd like to do a podcast, as I think it's both more creative and engaging for me and the listener/reader. Even if it is trash, I'll have fun doing it.

Since I don't want to just re-regurgitate the same information over and basically read my articles out loud to myself, I thought of a format that should be pretty interesting & work as a credibility builder for my company WIN WIN.

    I'm looking to do a series of podcasts, where each episode is a 2 part take;

Intro: we break down the business that you are in, your target audience, the problems you solve for them, ideal clients, etc.... we do this over the cast, and I discuss a solution that we implement.

Followup: We revisit 6 weeks later and discuss the campaign status. (obviously you and I will be in touch before then during the campaign, but the podcast will be for filling in listeners). We will discuss issues we encountered, how we fixed them, the leads generated and how they compared to other leads from other sources or past campaigns, etc..

The goal is to serve as an information ride along of sorts on different campaigns from different companies in different industries.

What works for one niche might not work for another niche, but that is where we can figure it all out!

So, if you are in the b2b space and could use more leads, and don't mind talking briefly on air about what you do, and going through this process, I'd love to get in touch and see if we can make something happen.

Any industry really, assuming you are b2b and your average customer value is > $700.

As far as costs associated with the campaign, I'm looking to cover the majority of them myself out of pocket, outside of a small flat fee to assist in the hard costs of configuring a new campaign.

If you have any feedback/input on things you would like to see, questions you have, or even why this may be a huge waste of my time.. please do reach out and let me know in the comments.

If you are interested in doing a campaign for the show, PM me!

TLDR: Podcast that walks setting up cold email lead gen campaigns with b2b companies. Need a few of you in the b2b space to get this started on.

Thanks, look forward to a good discussion!
