Over $40,000 in flood damages, and Preferred Mutual won't pay a cent.

Our fully furnished basement was recently flooded by nearly 4 inches of groundwater. Lower walls and moldings needed to be cut out for mold damage. Furniture and electronics were ruined. Hundreds of square feet of carpet were pulled up.

Our insurance provider claims they wont help pay a cent of the damages because "groundwater isn't covered". Is there anyone we can consult or anything we can do at this stage? I wouldnt typically consult reddit on such matters, but we're grasping at straws here. Any advice is appreciated.

Edit: A big thank you to everyone who chimed in. Certainly not the answers we were hoping for...but not entirely unexpected.

Does bill get applied to deductible on date of service or on payment date?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2018 11:24 PM PST

I had emergency surgery in mid-October, and to date my insurance has been billed just over $38,000. So far they have processed around $7000 of those bills (anesthesiologist, surgeon, radiology, etc). Of that $7000 total, I have so far paid $1800 out-of-pocket, satisfying my $1500 deductible.

There is only one bill that is yet unpaid - the single $31,000 bill from the hospital itself (ER, overnight, surgery). It was received into the system over a month ago, but is still sitting there with status 'in process'.

My policy through my employer renews on December 1st, and my middle of the night mind is worried that they are holding on to the bill until my deductible resets next weekend. That's not a thing, right?

    Advice before filing a claim

    Posted: 22 Nov 2018 10:46 PM PST

    Hey r/Insurance

So I was driving on the interstate tonight in the HOV lane, when all of a sudden my car dipped hard to the right. I let go of the accelerator and counter steered to avoid swerving into a car next to me. I lost control, went sideways and struck the dividing concrete median nose first. 360'd and struck the median again this time with the rear. The car finally stopped sideways in the lane. My dog and I made it out of all that unharmed. Also luckily, no other cars were involved in the accident! The car wouldn't start so I called AAA for a tow. Some other drivers whole witnessed what happened got out and helped push my car the left hand shoulder. I got someone's information that saw what happened just in case I needed it later. Eventually highway patrol arrived and pushed the car to the other shoulder. He asked if I wanted to file a report, but I declined. When AAA finally arrived the driver noticed the right rear tire had blown out, which is what caused the sudden loss of control I'm sure. I have insurance but it doesn't cover collision... I was thinking of upgrading and adding collision to my coverage before filing my claim. So I'm wondering what, if any issues I would face when attempting to do this. And how long after I should wait before calling my insurance company? If anyone has any experience with this your advice on filing single vehicle accident claims would be very helpful.

    tl;dr

My tire blew out and I crashed my car into a concrete median. I have insurance but not collision, was thinking of upgrading before filing my claim. Am I going to face any issues when doing this?

Thanks in an advance for the advice!

Finding car insurance for a hearse.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2018 01:25 PM PST

I bought a 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood Commercial Chassis recently and haven't been able to find insurance for it. The VIN number comes up and invalid or incomplete even though it's the VIN number on the car. It's not used for a business, it's my every day vehicle for commuting. I dont want commercial insurance and just liability would be nice. I have tried geico, allstate, state farm, liberty mutual, safe auto, etc. with no luck yet. I dont know what to do or how to insure it and I am looking for some advice so I can happily drive my car.

    Diminished value claim in SC?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2018 05:33 PM PST

Hey - just wondering if this is even worth pursuing. I've got a relatively new 2017 Chevy Colorado - purchased about 18 months ago.

3 weeks ago there was an accident on the highway, and one of the involved cars left the road, and ran down an embankment into my truck sitting in a parking lot. The left front fender and front bumper were damaged. All in all about $3,000 worth of damage.

Somehow the insurance companies have it worked out that one of the cars (not the one that hit me) was 75% responsible for the accident and the other was 25% percent responsible.

Now, they're repairing my car obviously (though from start to finish I'll have been without it for 4 weeks with them refusing to provide a rental car - thank goodness my dad has more than one vehicle and has lent me one of his to drive), but now I'm concerned that even though the truck will be repaired my potential resale value has gone down (particularly frustrating since I was seriously considering trading it in within about 6 months on a full-sized truck).

Anyways, I know the concept of a diminished value claim, but is it even worth pursuing? If I'm going to get a few hundred dollars its probably not worth it but if the claim is potentially in the $1500+ range it would certainly help out.

    Thanks!

Have some questions about filing a claim

    Posted: 22 Nov 2018 04:39 PM PST

First time in an accident and I made the mistake of not getting the guys phone number or license plate. He didn't get mine either but we did take pics of our insurance cards and I just wanted to know how that's going to affect my claim. Any advice would help as I've never done this before! It wasn't a bad accident at all. His front bumper by his tire is dented and I have a few scratches on my car but no injuries.

Coordination of Benefits - two health insurance products (NC)

    Posted: 22 Nov 2018 01:46 PM PST

I lost health coverage through my employer due to a job loss. My spouse is not eligible for health coverage from her employer yet. We have one young child as our dependent. We live in North Carolina and are in our mid-30s. No preexisting conditions. My birthday comes earlier than my wife's.

Since COBRA and ACA plans were unaffordable (even with subsidy), we signed up for Short Term health coverage through Golden Rule Insurance. Policy is under my name. It does not cover preventive office visits and has very high deductible.

Starting next month, my wife will become eligible for a health insurance plan through her employer. It ONLY covers preventive visits plus two PCP visits per person per calendar year. It meets ACA MEC, but not Minimum Value. My wife is primary on that plan.

I intend to keep the Short Term plan and sign up for wife's plan (to avoid ACA penalties).

Does anyone know how the Coordination of Benefits would work for preventive visit for: 1. My wife 2. Myself 3. My child

We would all like to have a preventive visit and immunizations, but I don't want to be left holding the bag with $700 each in expenses for the preventive visit. The Benefits Coordinator at my wife's employer was not very helpful.

I am hoping that the collective knowledge of redditers on this sub will help me ask the right questions to the right people and/or follow a smart strategy so that I can get my preventive visits without having to pay anything.

    Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Help me understand if an HSA would be good for me?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2018 07:59 AM PST

I don't quite get the insurance stuff. My husband is on the ACA and it's very expensive. I have been on COBRA which I got for 3 years due to divorce, and I have until Oct. 2019 until it's over, if I remain on it. It's expensive $433 a month, but low deductible of $2,000 and $3600 out of pocket, and dental I have too in there for $2500 a month, so I've been paying it using the dental a lot while I have it. I may just pay this and remain on it, but after that considering the HSA.

Question: If I have and HSA, how does that work then, I pay like so much a month just to have it, then I contribute like so much to an account that is only good for medical expenses, but is there a maximum out of pocket or anything for major expenses, like a trip to hospital could be extreme costs, so how does that work? Thanks in advance. (PS...I don't have any serious conditions at age 56 right now, I am on a very inexpensive medication that is generic that I must take daily). Live in Florida

Why is my Auto Insurance so high?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2018 07:18 AM PST

I'm 22 yrs old in Indiana driving an 04' Kia Spectra w/ 200k mi (worthless vehicle, honestly). I've been in 2 accidents: Once I accidentally backed into my parents car in their driveway (State Farm considers this a not a fault accident, not sure why) & the other time my car was hit by someone else while parked on the street, which was also not at fault. I'm still paying $139/month for full coverage w/ Progressive & my deductible's are at $2,000. I have shopped around and for whatever reason everyone that I've looked into is similar. Am I paying too much? Or am I not looking in the right places?
